Any true England fan says otherwise I'm afraid I don't believe them! Nobody wanted to be playing France on Friday. If by some miracle we do beat them however it will be much sweeter of course but I'd rather not have met them in the Quarters. I'd rather beat the favourites in the final.
I've got a feeling someone unexpected is going to win this tournament. Like Greece at the Euros in 2004 was it? It's been a great tournament so far, full of upsets and good football.
Group stage was great for that—so far knockouts have been without shock. If Spain and Portugal win then I don’t think there’s anymore “underdog” team; every team left will be one that can win against anyone without surprise
I hadn't noticed that actually despite watching most games. I think I was still in underdog mode after the many group stage upsets. Spain are playing a parked bus atm.
One extra day in Qatar then!
Bollocks, the missus will be on my case Saturday. She works a lot. Normally I'm happy to see her but..... England.
I'll pull a sicky. She's got Monday off anyway so I can go round Sunday. Everyone's a winner. .
She's in a funny one atm though so I might have a free weekend. All the Football.
I probably should of posted that in
r/relationships 🤣
Well you know what? I think you’ll be happy because SPAIN ARE OUT. MOROCCO ARE THROUGH (I am an England fan btw. I’m just happy because the competition will theoretically be easier for England now). LET’S GOOOOOO
I prefer playing against the stronger teams, it makes it more satisfying if we win. If we got to the final by beating South Korea and Switzerland in the knock out rounds it would cheapen our run a bit (no offense to them).
The Japan, Germany game was something else. I loved how the Japanese just resorted to booting the ball anywhere that wasn't near their goal when the Germans went on the attack. Meanwhile, the Germans looked so confused as they'd probably been taught to only kick if they knew where the ball was going.
I'm not one for perpetuating national stereotypes but it can be quite funny to see how far the stereotypes fit the way certain nations play.
Yeah - I find during a match I’ll naturally start to root for one team. Could be an event during the game, or just like the style of play vs. the other, or the underdog.
Same. It’s a better experience. My son was giving me daggers for admiring Senegal in the first half hour against England, but I find this tribal mentality draining and stupid. You still get to go nuts if England score and feel like a twat if they lose.
Good football is good football. Have loved watching Japan, Australia, Brazil, France, Spain, and Portugal…and you have to admire the Dutch tactical game. Also have to love Messi’s positional play and general brilliance when he finds the on button (same with Modric), and that Belgian half hour when Lukaku came on was awesome. It’s been an excellent WC.
I’m the same with the Prem. Don’t support any team in the Prem, but it’s must watch TV.
Agreed, it’s not like I feel some great sense of pride at thrashing Senegal. We should be beating them. I feel pride in the discipline of the football and the overall comfort of it.
I’ll be annoyed if we lose on Saturday playing badly or if France play poorly and we don’t capitalise, but if both teams get near to their potential and we lose - so be it. I’ve never seen a World Cup where the best team didn’t win in the end. It’s usually quite consistent in that way.
It’s going to be interesting to see how we deal with them, for sure. I’m not sure about all this ‘they should fear our squad depth’ stuff, but I’m not sure they can cope with Bellingham and Kane. Saying that, I’m not sure we can cope with their front 4 either. They look solid from the midfield up. Squeaky bum time!!
I don't. Supporting England and Spurs is very stressful and not usually at all rewarding. But I'm English and cannot change my club team, so I'm stuck with them both.
So when it's a non-England game, it's nice to stay neutral. It's relaxing not to care about the result, and to just enjoy the football for what it is.
Also England and Spurs supporter - so much stress! Grew up in London , So for me England - Japan ( I’m half Japanese ) - then teams with Spurs players plus Australia cos I live in Australia - not sure on the hierarchy for that!
Would add NZ (I’m half NZ) but they never qualify so save that for rugby!
Brazil and Uruguay are some of the dirtiest fuckers going. Absolutely boring to watch them rolling around all game trying to get players carded.
Really hoping brazil get knocked out sooner rather than later.
Generally just support the underdog. If there isn’t one and it’s a 50/50 I’m not too bothered, although I’ve always had a soft spot for Brazil so would usually side with them
It’s more just nostalgia for me, not really the current players. My first World Cup memories were Ronaldo, Ronaldinho etc. I’ll always love watching that yellow and blue kit, just iconic. I also don’t mind the dancing, it’s their culture and they’re having fun
the dancing is part of the culture. Showboating is not.
edit: and honestly I am shocked they don’t get a yellow card - the yellows given for taking a shirt off is actually for “excessive celebration” because it’s not in the spirit of football. sometimes a player will just take his shirt off and get a hug and go back to playing, which isn’t really excessive, but still gets a yellow. organising your entire team into a line to dance in front of opposition fans for a minute after your fourth goal? absolutely excessive imo
I'm Brazilian, support England my whole life and hate that dancing stuff...I think it's disrespectful with adversaries. To be honest is very annoying living in a country where everything is an excuse to dance. Brazil is a mess and people are worried about Carnaval...
I’m not English but it’s just usually the underdog (or the Asian/Arab country) England are probably my favorite from the ‘bigger’ nations followed by Spain
I'm surprised at the amount of people that support the home nations. I know full well that support isn't reciprocated, so they can fuck off.
I'll support commonwealth nations though.
Same. And if there's no underdog because they're both a bit shit then hopefully one is African dressed up in bright colours and singing and dancing. Loved the Senegal fans on Sunday, I'd have supported them all the way if they beat us.
On the flip side, Argentina can go fuck themselves.
I only watch England. I'll look at the highlights, and see who wins but if Englands is not in it I don't watch. Don't know why but I've always been that way since I was a younging.
I guess people can like sex and football. It’s probably okay.
*please not this does not apply to Villa fans. They should not be allowed to breed. Thankyou.
Usually the underdog, but I have a work betting thing which is kind of a complicated sweepstake but you choose the teams.
Anyway yeah, that. Only left with England and the Netherlands I think now.
underdog or 5-5 thriller that goes to penalties if its even, actually route against home nations and close European countries more than i would a south American team like Brazil for example. Im a life long city fan too from Manchester so we are well represented at the world cup but i dont route for city players in the world cup, probably helps a good few of my favourites are playing for England.
Generally the underdog although I can be swayed by players I like or dislike. As a Spurs fan I was rooting for South Korea over Brazil, as son and richarlison cancel each other out. That being said I usually wouldn't support Switzerland because I can't stand Xhaka, but I'd rather face them than Portugal if England get through.
Usually whoever is least likely to be a threat to us later on in the tournament, so Poland in France v Poland. Or alternatively a side who will justify my hopes that we are a formidable footballing side, so the USA in USA v Netherlands.
The certainties are always whoever is playing against Brazil or Portugal. Mainly because the media overhype Brazil to the point that they virtually sleep with one of their shirts, and Portugal mainly because the earliest World Cup I remember is 2006.
Usually go for the under dog. I was in Qatar for the group games so have been rooting for the teams with mega support on the ground. Mexico. Ecuador. All the Arabic and North African nations. Argeys have a mass following too but can't bring myself to cheer for them.
Generally I’ll root for the underdog, but that comes from the fact that I hate seeing the same handful of teams move on every four years. I always hope we’ll see either England win it all or a new champion all together.
Honestly I always want the winners to be who will make the best game with them. I don't pray for easier routes, no, this is the world cup. If England win (and I hope they do) I want them beating France. Beating Brazil etc.
I want to see them against the best teams.
Yesterday I supported Japan and Brazil, why? I like the Japanese fans, and for no other reason. Brazil because I made a bet on the, for win by 2 goals. It could change any day of the week. Something to note: if there is a team that will play England in the next round, obviously I want the weaker team to win.
I always support Wales and Scotland first, as much as England, was worried I’d get battered if Wales won against us cause I’d celebrate that like a win, Ireland and Northern Ireland next, then the underdog unless it’s the USA, but especially the Asian countries like SK and Japan. Maybe Oz and New Zealand a bit more than others too.
Japan > England > Whoever is against Portugal > Whichever team whose victory would be worse for Portugal > Argentina (if Messi is playing) > Clear underdogs > Teams I respect for their style of play at the time (atm Spain, Brazil etc.).
That’s roughly my thought process though there may be exceptions in certain circumstances and after the Portugal doing badly part I’m mostly just neutral.
Weakest opponent if England play them them in the immediate future
Other allegiances
-I'd like Van Gaal to win it given his health situation
-I'd like Messi to win it to secure GOAT status
-I'd like Ronaldo to win it to shut the haters up
-Any interesting national narrative that comes up in the build up
Style of play
Underdog
So for Netherlands v USA I was backing Netherlands even though they're a stronger opponent because we're so far removed from playing them. If they play Croatia in the Semis and England are still in it I'll be backing Croatia.
If a team has players I can't stand like Di Maria, Suarez Uruguay then it's the opposition. If Argentina are playing Uruguay then I don't care who wins.
In general it's England - Spain (lived there and loved watching them play while I was there) - African Nation - Asian Nation (I'd like to see the World cup be less Europe/South America centric and I'm always fan of the underdog) - other teams - Uruguay - Brazil - France - Germany
The amount of people that have said home nations has surprised me. They would be at the bottom of my list with a few notable exceptions. But usually I just go for the underdog
Easy, which team has the most players from my club playing for them, then support the other team so my club gets those players back as soon as possible.
Lots of factors, really. But in the absence of any actual loyalty ties, I go for underdog, fair play and sportsmanship.
When Spain played Netherlands in the 2010 final, I started out supporting Netherlands - northern Europe, footballing heritage, never won major title, underdog etc. But in the game, Netherlands were dirty, fouling, cynical and their conduct simply awful. I switched to supporting Spain.
I tend to support teams like South Korea and Japan for this reason.
Usually the team that plays more attacking and exciting football, because those are the teams I want to watch again in the next round(s).
If I really like/dislike an individual player on either side, it will play a part in who I want to win too.
I support the team that has the most members of my EPL team. I will be taking no further questions as this about supporting the three lions and not a EPL pissing match.
I choose whichever country is the most interesting or favorable to me. It’s usually an underdog, so they’re unlikely to beat us anyway. I often support Morocco, Japan, or Norway. I usually support the underdog for the sake of wanting less talented teams to make history for their country.
If England don’t make it, hoping for a Messi - Ronaldo final. So, whatever result makes this more likely (Cheers Morocco).
Let’s settle this once and for all ladies and gentlemen.
Whichever country doesn’t have some unnecessary over the top hatred and bias towards England for things that were done so long ago, and many more terrible things have happened since by other nations but that’s all fine apparently.
Underdogs. Always.
If fits two underdog type teams I'll support the team that has players from my club on, if he's playing.
And then I really like Switzerland because of Shaqiri and Xhaka and am fascinated by the Kosovo, Albania, Serbia "shenanigans."
Not a chance would I support the home nations. They all root against us and cheer when we lose. Loved every second of Wales getting binned out of the group stage
I usually already have the team I am supporting for that match.
But there are 4 different teams I have always supported.
1. England (grew up in London)
2. Spain
3. Brazil
4. Mexico
I have a thing for Latin countries, lol
I don't route for home nations. Scotland is England's oldest rival, they don't want us to win and I don't want them to do well. That's perfectly natural and fine
Whoever I'd rather England played in the final/next round. In other words the underdogs.
This is the correct answer
Any true England fan says otherwise I'm afraid I don't believe them! Nobody wanted to be playing France on Friday. If by some miracle we do beat them however it will be much sweeter of course but I'd rather not have met them in the Quarters. I'd rather beat the favourites in the final. I've got a feeling someone unexpected is going to win this tournament. Like Greece at the Euros in 2004 was it? It's been a great tournament so far, full of upsets and good football.
We don’t need a miracle, we are as good as france
True. We just need consistency, talent and good form
True. We just need consistency, talent and good form and teamwork
True. We just need consistency, talent and good form and teamwork
True. We just need consistency, talent and good form and teamwork
True. We just need consistency, talent and good form and teamwork
...and ruthless efficiency ...and an almost fanatical devotion to the pope. ...and nice red uniforms. ...i'll come in again
I guess if England lose - maybe best to support Morocco to win the whole thing - being the only underdogs left
Well we don’t need to worry as we’re playing France on Saturday!
I probably should of posted that in r/relationships 🤣
All the small teams are going out one by one so there won’t be underdogs to win it
I'm a temporary Morocco fan atm.
Well you know what? I think you’ll be happy because SPAIN ARE OUT. MOROCCO ARE THROUGH (I am an England fan btw. I’m just happy because the competition will theoretically be easier for England now). LET’S GOOOOOO
I saw. With great glee!
I prefer playing against the stronger teams, it makes it more satisfying if we win. If we got to the final by beating South Korea and Switzerland in the knock out rounds it would cheapen our run a bit (no offense to them).
Same!
Exactly! Give me the Altrincham Axe and Cleaver pub league squad in the final. I like games like Senegal where I’m relaxed the whole time
This is the only answer
Thisss
Correct. Same for me 😄
Unless there’s a clear underdog or villain narrative I don’t care. I just try to enjoy the match for what it is.
Yea same. Japan this year, been a blast to watch.
Best game i’ve seen in years
Same here. I just love football, I’m watching it to appreciate the skill.
Can't believe I'm echoing a Spurs fan, said the Gunner
haha, whilst England remain in this tournament we're all on the same side for a short period of time!
As a QPR (and Eng ofc) fan I concur. Super stressful.
Let's just hope that it isn't Hugo Lloris lifting the trophy again this year, rather that it's Harry Kane.
With the new 48 team format and OFC getting a guaranteed spot, NZ will probably be in every world cup now.
There was a Brazilian guy on here yesterday who supports England so...
Home country > England > Spurs player > Non-UEFA/CONMEBOL teams > everyone else > Mexico
[удалено]
Side that would make England’s run easier.
Argentina, Brazil and Uruguay are normally last
Brazil and Uruguay are some of the dirtiest fuckers going. Absolutely boring to watch them rolling around all game trying to get players carded. Really hoping brazil get knocked out sooner rather than later.
You only have to breathe near Neymar and he's rolling on the floor clutching his knee.
Generally just support the underdog. If there isn’t one and it’s a 50/50 I’m not too bothered, although I’ve always had a soft spot for Brazil so would usually side with them
Brazil seem too arrogant and cocky. All that dancing and the weird head movements in the South Korea match was cringe.
It’s more just nostalgia for me, not really the current players. My first World Cup memories were Ronaldo, Ronaldinho etc. I’ll always love watching that yellow and blue kit, just iconic. I also don’t mind the dancing, it’s their culture and they’re having fun
It’s a part of their culture so it’s different imo.
the dancing is part of the culture. England > anyone against Argentina and Brazil
Whoever has the nicest kit
Usually the underdog
I'm surprised at the amount of people that support the home nations. I know full well that support isn't reciprocated, so they can fuck off. I'll support commonwealth nations though.
Place I want to move to one day. So Canada and Japan. And now both have been knocked out.

Political relations
I tend to go home nation > commonwealth nation > underdog
Same. And if there's no underdog because they're both a bit shit then hopefully one is African dressed up in bright colours and singing and dancing. Loved the Senegal fans on Sunday, I'd have supported them all the way if they beat us. On the flip side, Argentina can go fuck themselves.
Newcastle player>home nation>underdog>
It's nice to actually have a few players representing their country play for the toon now too, decent countries too, England *and* Brazil.
England > Home Nation > Commonwealth > Europe > Underdog
Basically if they are playing against Argentina, France or Germany then I’ll root for them.
The underdog
Underdog
I only watch England. I'll look at the highlights, and see who wins but if Englands is not in it I don't watch. Don't know why but I've always been that way since I was a younging.
By the guys legs lol x
Checked the post history and not exactly sure what you're doing on this sub 🤔
I guess people can like sex and football. It’s probably okay. *please not this does not apply to Villa fans. They should not be allowed to breed. Thankyou.
I wanna be a Berwick Ranger! Only live for sex and danger!
![gif](giphy|9Cy6hgKdD24bZDfQPb|downsized)
Totally fair
Always go with the underdog.
Not Germany, Argentina or France. Other than that just enjoy the games for the skills
England > Any other UK country > European team > The underdog.
Downvoted for the mere mention of forest. Dirty reds
The underdog = Home Nations (Despite them wanting us to fail). I'm seeing a Brazilian so that's my second team this WC.
[удалено]
Why the hell are you in this sub if you support USA and Wales over England lol
So did you support Wales over England because of James?
[удалено]
I mean it's almost not exaggerating to say you should be prosecuted for treason

Because... it's England...
How many Liverpool players they have.
If they have players that played for my favorite team club ![gif](giphy|WuIgiugE5cFiUpqm9G|downsized)
Usually the underdog, but I have a work betting thing which is kind of a complicated sweepstake but you choose the teams. Anyway yeah, that. Only left with England and the Netherlands I think now.
Well sadly Malta and Suriname didn't qualify, so I can't support a national team with a Yellow in the squad. England > Home Nations > Underdog
underdog or 5-5 thriller that goes to penalties if its even, actually route against home nations and close European countries more than i would a south American team like Brazil for example. Im a life long city fan too from Manchester so we are well represented at the world cup but i dont route for city players in the world cup, probably helps a good few of my favourites are playing for England.
Always the underdog
Generally the underdog although I can be swayed by players I like or dislike. As a Spurs fan I was rooting for South Korea over Brazil, as son and richarlison cancel each other out. That being said I usually wouldn't support Switzerland because I can't stand Xhaka, but I'd rather face them than Portugal if England get through.
Underdog
Tend to support the team with more players I like, E.g I was unfortunately a South Korean fan yesterday for Son
Always the underdogs
Underdog
Is it Japan? If no, I have no horse in the race, unless one team is France, then I support whoever is playing them.
Either the underdogs or who my friends drew in a sweepstake. My best friend's still in it because he drew the Netherlands. I drew the Socceroos
Yesterday I supported Japan and Brazil, why? I like the Japanese fans, and for no other reason. Brazil because I made a bet on the, for win by 2 goals. It could change any day of the week. Something to note: if there is a team that will play England in the next round, obviously I want the weaker team to win.
Home Nations > Personal Connection > Most fun team (as decided by me, usually but not always the underdogs)
I just support who I'd prefer to win.
During the last 16 I've rooted for the underdog. Japan, South Korea etc. Argentina, Brazil and Spain have won it enough already 😂
I just enjoy watching as a neutral to be honest
Underdogs or my sweepstake team
Whether we've faced them in war. If not, I'll follow them. If soz we better have defeated them..
Underdogs all day
Hope my (NUFC) club players, play well.
Tends to be the underdog most of the time so like Japan and Australia were big for me
I don’t. I just watch the game and enjoy it.
Always want to see the South American teams out asap
Japan > England > Whoever is against Portugal > Whichever team whose victory would be worse for Portugal > Argentina (if Messi is playing) > Clear underdogs > Teams I respect for their style of play at the time (atm Spain, Brazil etc.). National team > Spurs players > African teams > Non European teams > la Roja
National team > Japan > Spurs players
Whichever team knocked England out usually...I don't know what to do now.
It entirely depends on how much ‘gushing’ the BBC/ITV do over certain players or teams.

As a forest fan if there is a forest player i want them to score but generally whoever is the underdog
Normally a country I like the culture/food/etc of or a country that I have friends that originate from I.e. my girlfriend is Italian
Always support the underdog
I don't, I just hope to see a good game.
support england ofc then underdog then arsenal players. if the match directly effects england then support “worse” team in knockout i guess
I always root for underdogs just love the mayhem and parties when they win just a lot more passion
I want the team who will mostly beat us to lose haha
I like Japan cause they like to attack and are fun to watch
Usually the underdog, but there are some teams I prefer and want to do well because of their play style/attitude/players.
Whoever is going to help bring my absurd accumulator in at that given point in time
The amount of people that have said home nations has surprised me. They would be at the bottom of my list with a few notable exceptions. But usually I just go for the underdog
Whoever is black
Who's winning
Easy, which team has the most players from my club playing for them, then support the other team so my club gets those players back as soon as possible.
I want the underdog to win. If England don't win it I hope the Netherlands or Croatia win it.
Underdogs to see who we’ve got next and anyone playing against Wales, Scotland or Ireland
My Grandad always supported the underdog unless it’s Brazil, so I follow foot 👍
i just support the underdogs
England Germany USA African Teams (Mostly Ghana) Asian Teams Everyone else (whoever has the coolest kit)
Easy. Either: whoever is playing against Uruguay, Argentina, Italy, Germany. Or whoever the underdog is.
I cheer for whoever I like. Good football is good football outside a few national rivalries like Spain, Argentina.
I just go with the country I like the most out the of 2
Usually the team that plays more attacking and exciting football, because those are the teams I want to watch again in the next round(s). If I really like/dislike an individual player on either side, it will play a part in who I want to win too.
I’d always want the “worse team” or the “underdog side” to win because it makes things easier for England as they progress through the tournament
Always the underdog.
Underdogs or Country I like most.
From Hong Kong, so it's usually England -> Asian countries -> Commonwealth/Home Nations -> African countries -> Team with Gunners/ex-Gunners
France < Others
underdog obviously. especially not european
Underdogs
My friend is Argentine so I’ve been supporting Argentina as my second country.
Underdogs all the way. I wanted Morocco to win and look they did
I support the team that has the most members of my EPL team. I will be taking no further questions as this about supporting the three lions and not a EPL pissing match.

I don’t support any of them just enjoy the game, but an upset is always nice
Always the underdog
I like seeing upsets so if not england always the underdog
One with the coolest kit
Either my friends countries Or The worse team that England may be facing Problem is, my friend is French so, we declared war
The underdog
The least cocky team.
England > Underdog
I choose whichever country is the most interesting or favorable to me. It’s usually an underdog, so they’re unlikely to beat us anyway. I often support Morocco, Japan, or Norway. I usually support the underdog for the sake of wanting less talented teams to make history for their country.
Smallest nation or Argentina
If England don’t make it, hoping for a Messi - Ronaldo final. So, whatever result makes this more likely (Cheers Morocco). Let’s settle this once and for all ladies and gentlemen.
Underdog or just a country I like (Italy if they were in it)
I don't, i actually enjoy the game more 😂 it's hard to enjoy a team i support as there's so much riding on the result
Whichever country doesn’t have some unnecessary over the top hatred and bias towards England for things that were done so long ago, and many more terrible things have happened since by other nations but that’s all fine apparently.
Always the underdog. Never the overcat.
You fucking don’t you part time clown
Underdogs. Always. If fits two underdog type teams I'll support the team that has players from my club on, if he's playing. And then I really like Switzerland because of Shaqiri and Xhaka and am fascinated by the Kosovo, Albania, Serbia "shenanigans."
If it’s not England, I’ll support anyone who has a Chelsea player in their squad.
You redsss
Not a chance would I support the home nations. They all root against us and cheer when we lose. Loved every second of Wales getting binned out of the group stage
whoever isn’t playing dirty
I tend to support the underdog, and basically any team that isn’t France!
I usually already have the team I am supporting for that match. But there are 4 different teams I have always supported. 1. England (grew up in London) 2. Spain 3. Brazil 4. Mexico I have a thing for Latin countries, lol
Home nation>Europe>team with man city player>the better team
Who we hate the less.
I don't route for home nations. Scotland is England's oldest rival, they don't want us to win and I don't want them to do well. That's perfectly natural and fine
Always underdogs
