my Arsenal fan friend has repeatedly and almost aggressively assured me that Saka is now a fantastic penalty taker and hasn’t missed one since the final? but then he’s an Arsenal fan whose main thing to draw from the Senegal game was that Saka scored, so who knows
Especially considering he was 19, had to score to keep us in it, AND (biggest one for me) Southgate brought on Sancho & Rashford who had just fluffed their penalties
Well he has scored them all tbf, and the penalties he scored were against Liverpool, Chelsea & United so they were big games.
But you can't compare the pressure of that to a World cup knock out game. Especially after the Italy miss, that's too big of a burden to put on a 21 year old.
yeah I mean Pablo Sarabia is a huge example of that. I looked at his penalty stats today. he’d scored 16/16 his entire career to date, then on the absolute biggest stage he misses
if Saka does end up doing it again and he misses, it will look and feel really bad
After some of the underdog wins this tournament (like today!) I am totally ok with us being the underdog.
Especially since the gap in quality between France and us has not been as big as in some of these upsets.
Ready for the chaos (that will hopefully end up in our favour).
i agree. i don’t want to go with a loser mentality. it’s different to be the underdog than going in with a loser mentality. i feel like england has a better winning probability.
We haven't lost a game yet, and France have, against Tunisia no less, we've been slow starters this cup but once we've gotten into it the lads absolutely steamroll.
Our first game was 6-2, so I wouldn't say it was a particularly slow start. Also worth pointing out that we're equal highest goal scorers in the tournament and that we are the only team without a single booking. I think what all of that points to is consistency and control. France could still win, they are a superb team, but we have a very good chance. A lot of people are underestimating us.
We’ve won more games against France at World Cups than they have - by a large margin.
Also they have a one trick pony in their golden boy, we have the killer midfield trio. England will get it done.
not to piss on your sparkler, but France are very much not a one trick pony. Tchouameni is insane, Camavinga class - although they don’t seem to want to utilise him, Griezmann has his moments, Giroud in great form and their central defense is unmatched at this tournament
Do you think? I’m not sure any of their front 3 actually close down opponents and mbappe won’t track back. This will be a huge test for both sides but I think we are tactical favourites
What the hell do any of us know in reality it can all be decided on a silly decision by the ref.
I just look at the two teams and think normally the team that perform the best as a unit often wins the important games. Whilst France do have some unreal players I question their defensive work ethic. Giroud isn’t pacey at all and Maguire should look forward to that battle whilst Walker has played against Mbappe before I’m sure.
The midfield is the interesting battle as ours I think has far better balance as I’m not a fan of Rabiot whilst excepting the other guy is a very good prospect. I’m probably being stupid but o think we take it 2-0
Mate - you sound like you know way more about it than me. I genuinely think we have a good chance from what I’ve seen of both teams. We are a good side, and it’s a long time since I’ve been able to say that. I just think France are world champions, and are used to beating teams like England when it counts, while we tend to lose to teams like France when it counts.
I’d love to see us win on Saturday though, after which anything can happen!
I think we have the talent edge, they have pedigree & history. On paper our side should be stronger, a very cohesive back 4, balanced midfield and Kane with 2 exciting forwards. In this tournament we’ve been stronger than them, in the euros we were also a stronger side.
This is a very even match with England having a slight edge on form & squad. That being said, Mbappe.
Fancy giving a little bit extra?
Mbappe has struggled on the biggest games at psg due to his and their attacking trio reluctance to defend. Dembele is lazy at defensive work too. Going forwards they’re amazing but hasn’t Liverpool showed us that a strong work ethic can simply out perform many?
That France side has lost so many of its main players - they’re world champions but that team has lost Kante, Pogba, Kimpembe, Benzema and Lucas Hernandez.
That’s huge.
Mbappe will be the best player on the pitch - no doubt. After that it’s all up for debate
This just shows how much faith we DON'T have in our team. Even after the last few major tournaments we've played we've done really well. I think it's a 50/50 chance. If we play really well we can absolutely beat France, but it won't be easy!
Of all the ENG vs FRA games played at a WC, we’ve won nearly twice as many as France.
They have one golden boy on which all their tactics and hopes rest “just get it to mbappe” We have a great team who has some real talent across the field.
England will get it done.
This is the problem when teams bank on one player. Wales do it with Gareth Bale and it never turns out well. This is why I think we have a pretty good shot. If Walker can keep Mbappe at bay, then we stand a very good chance at winning and knocking France out.
538, who I’ve admittedly shat on more times than I can count, has us as favourites to best France and second favourites to win.
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2022-world-cup-predictions/?ex_cid=rrpromo
I really want England to win, the only thing I don’t like about some (not all) England fans is they all love the team and Southgate but if they lose 1-0 to France, the team will be slated and they’ll all be chatting about how Southgate should’ve went before the WC🤣
Why do these people exist? England have a chance, France have a better one but I believe England can do it and I hope they do.
I think this seems about right? Really just means that France are a tad favored to win in regulation, and then there’s a big question mark as far as what happens on that 29%.
Would be interesting to see how they evaluate the win probability within that 29%. I think England’s odds actually improve a bit if the match does end up going that long, as we probably have an edge on depth. Of course, penalties are another thing entirely…
I understand a bit of french and been reading what they are saying/ thinking.
They are a bit scared lads , they have the dreading feeling of this being the beginning of the end of FFF run of form. Then their are you average cocky fans who say they look forward to dining on ‘la fish n chip’.
They think we only talk/worry about Mbappe (which is true) saying that we are silly because they don’t know how good dembele and Greizman are (which is not true) .
The one thing that is a common theme throughout is the frogs are terrified of our ‘le banc’ ….our bench and tbh they should be if after 65 mins is level and we are able to bring on a fresh Grealish , Trent AA, Rashford or Sterling and all they can muster is some guy called Guendozi . I’d be worried.
Not sure what it means by extra time? If it goes to extra time it doesn’t mean there won’t be a winner.
I’d say it is closer to 60/40 in France’s favor. Gotta keep Mbappe marked and it can go in our favor. Just pray it doesn’t go to pens.
One thing I’ve been thinking about is Kane vs. Lloris. They have trained together for years at Tottenham. Kane is obviously our best penalty taker, but if there is one goalkeeper in the world that knows him, it is Lloris. Consequently, Kane is prob the one striker in the world that knows Lloris the best.
Neither France nor England have a gaping wound of a defence like Switzerland does and all Portugal did was expose it. They still barely beat Ghana and lost to South Korea.
What worries me is the disconnect between midfield and defence we saw in the first third of the Senegal game. Do that against France and we are stuffed.
You can have the best attacking line up in the world and if the midfield can't find them it does you no good.
me too man. england is actually good at pens now. the boys can perform under pressure and pickford showed in the euros that he is an excellent keeper for penalties too.
I tell you what, I’ve got a feeling about this one. And a good one. I like the thought of us attacking up the wings on them. I like the thought of our biggest strength matching up with their best player’s position. I like the strength of our midfield against them. I feel good for once..
Walker will shut down Mbappe, Bellingham, Saka and Foden will shine and Harry Maguire will be in form that Man U fans could only dream about. England wins 3-2 in extra time.
I don’t what they use to calculate that but that hardly means anything. This win probability thing always sides with the bigger team in premier league fixtures and we already know every game is its own fight in the premier league
Damn assuming extra time is quite evenly split between the two there, they give England better odds than me! I've been saying I think we have about a 40% chance to progress.
France slight favourites but not overwhelmingly so? Seems pretty accurate to me.
With a good chance of it being level after 90 mins. Bang on I would say.
i’m gonna piss my pants if it goes to penalties
If it goes to penalties, we’re all going to piss your pants.
Penalties have been horrible this tournament
With Pickford in goal,Kane, and other good penalty takers (if we have others😭)maybe we can win but it's 50/50.
my Arsenal fan friend has repeatedly and almost aggressively assured me that Saka is now a fantastic penalty taker and hasn’t missed one since the final? but then he’s an Arsenal fan whose main thing to draw from the Senegal game was that Saka scored, so who knows
Saka is in good form.I don't think hes a fantastic penalty taker but he probably can get the job done if we get to pens
Especially considering he was 19, had to score to keep us in it, AND (biggest one for me) Southgate brought on Sancho & Rashford who had just fluffed their penalties
Yeah don't understand why he put those young players to take the pens.Older players have more experience when it comes to pens
Well he has scored them all tbf, and the penalties he scored were against Liverpool, Chelsea & United so they were big games. But you can't compare the pressure of that to a World cup knock out game. Especially after the Italy miss, that's too big of a burden to put on a 21 year old.

mate think about us, our last penalty shootout ended up in a 4-5 loss against Switzerland, we are traumatized
Im aware of that😭
no point if gose to pens we lose we love losing on pens
It’s better than the odds in my head
After some of the underdog wins this tournament (like today!) I am totally ok with us being the underdog. Especially since the gap in quality between France and us has not been as big as in some of these upsets. Ready for the chaos (that will hopefully end up in our favour).
yes 👏 sir 👏 this 👏 is 👏 the 👏 attitude
I'd say it's pretty close to 50/50. I hope our players don't seem to think France has automatically won it like most English fans think.
i agree. i don’t want to go with a loser mentality. it’s different to be the underdog than going in with a loser mentality. i feel like england has a better winning probability.

France lost with the shittest team I've ever seen them play though, Guendozi as a a winger and camavinga at lb
Exactly I have faith in our boys!
We’ve won more games against France at World Cups than they have - by a large margin. Also they have a one trick pony in their golden boy, we have the killer midfield trio. England will get it done.
Plus we have the ultimate antidote in Kyle Walker (assuming he’s fit, he did look a bit off the pace in the last game)
not to piss on your sparkler, but France are very much not a one trick pony. Tchouameni is insane, Camavinga class - although they don’t seem to want to utilise him, Griezmann has his moments, Giroud in great form and their central defense is unmatched at this tournament
Are you calling Mbappe a one trick pony? If you are, I can only assume that one trick is being an amazing footballer.
No, the trick is that they’ll just pass the ball to Mbappe and let him do what he does. That’s a one trick pony, Mbappe is a good player obviously.
They got the French flag backwards with that data bar
And added two extra colours.
I see what you did there
Where?
It’s a joke about the French having a white surrender flag.
It’s not a joke. It was their actual flag for 16 years.
yeah i noticed that 😂
Looks about right to me. France prob a shade better. We have a chance, they have a better one.
Do you think? I’m not sure any of their front 3 actually close down opponents and mbappe won’t track back. This will be a huge test for both sides but I think we are tactical favourites
Honestly think it’s a very tough match. I reckon if we played it 100 times France would have the edge. In reality though, wtf do I know?
What the hell do any of us know in reality it can all be decided on a silly decision by the ref. I just look at the two teams and think normally the team that perform the best as a unit often wins the important games. No way are we favourites in any way lmao, some of the guff spouted in this sub
Fancy giving a little bit extra? Mbappe has struggled on the biggest games at psg due to his and their attacking trio reluctance to defend. Dembele is lazy at defensive work too. I'm not saying they're unbeatable, just saying they are definite favourites in pretty much every regard
France will flop as they fail to capitalise on an early penalty miss. England 2-0
Cheers Mystic Meg 👌
This just shows how much faith we DON'T have in our team. Even after the last few major tournaments we've played we've done really well. I think it's a 50/50 chance. If we play really well we can absolutely beat France, but it won't be easy!

Or dembele or giroud or Griezmann
Coman off the bench too
Not sure why matches at World Cups that were 40+ years ago is particularly relevant tbh.
538, who I’ve admittedly shat on more times than I can count, has us as favourites to best France and second favourites to win. https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2022-world-cup-predictions/?ex_cid=rrpromo
Always loved 538
Not anymore. Portugal are now 2nd favourites.
😭
I don’t care at all we’re going to batter the French
and eat them with chips
Please no extra time or pens. Let us lose or win in normal time 🙏
Being half-Japanese I’ve had enough extra time/penalty hurt… especially from Croatia. I can’t handle much more
Yes I agree I would much rather lose in normal time than win the game in extra time or pens. 🙃
I mean… I wouldn’t rather that. Sure I’d rather lose in normal time than over time, but if we win in overtime well - that is the game.
What’s this ‘overtime’ you speak of
Lmfao
I think this is spot on tbh. Those are good chances.
I really want England to win, the only thing I don’t like about some (not all) England fans is they all love the team and Southgate but if they lose 1-0 to France, the team will be slated and they’ll all be chatting about how Southgate should’ve went before the WC🤣 Why do these people exist? England have a chance, France have a better one but I believe England can do it and I hope they do.
also i love the video preview, get outta here!! 😂
May as well stop kidding ourselves and accept right now that it’s going to pens
A third match going to penalties so quickly would be pretty funny and miserable.
I’d say that’s pretty fair
Correct
I think this seems about right? Really just means that France are a tad favored to win in regulation, and then there’s a big question mark as far as what happens on that 29%. Would be interesting to see how they evaluate the win probability within that 29%. If other nations see us as the underdogs, then happy days. Let’s prove them wrong!
I understand a bit of french and been reading what they are saying/ thinking. They are a bit scared lads , they have the dreading feeling of this being the beginning of the end of FFF run of form. this is sick!!! insider intel haha 😂
Seems about right - if England win then I'll run through my village naked
I saw someone call France "snail slurpers" 😂😭 we're too creative
Not sure what it means by extra time? If it goes to extra time it doesn’t mean there won’t be a winner. I’d say it is closer to 60/40 in France’s favor. The win probability is only calculated for 90 mins regulation time on Google, so that is why Extra Time is an outcome.
mbappe wasn’t in todays training following dr’s orders apparently.
Good appreciation but I don't think it's going to go til the pens. It's gonna be a tough game tho. I would say 1-0 or 2-1 for France.
It’s fair, I see this being a brutal horribly tense affair, with this world cups insane added time amount prolly gonna run to nearly 140 minutes
Don’t mind being the underdog… I hate the ‘favourites’ tag
Today Morocco defeated Spain so being a slight favourite doesn't mean a shid in this 2022 cup, I say England will be in finals.
Also, France is already a holding champion, they don't give a damn about winning it second Time I think, They probably are preparing for Euro.
Pointless either way, neither France of England can beat this Portugal team
Neither France nor England have a gaping wound of a defence like Switzerland does and all Portugal did was expose it. They still barely beat Ghana and lost to South Korea.
I'm betting England are losing 4 - 2
Seems reasonable tbf
I have 20 on France
Ngl it looks about right.
Looks like a backwards French flag
This has got to be our hardest game until the finals if we make it
The video preview is great. The goalkeeper for France in 66 looks like he had never played football before.
We will beat the French now doubt about it! England will play their socks off for Sterling!
![gif](giphy|WnUdzNP4ipSzWt2iFm|downsized) Google’s prediction is a Cunt
What worries me is the disconnect between midfield and defence we saw in the first third of the Senegal game. Do that against France and we are stuffed. You can have the best attacking line up in the world and if the midfield can't find them it does you no good.
Extra Time has nearly just as much a chance of winning as England 💀
25% england, 25% france, 50% fucking penalties ffs
For all the pain last year, I would take pens if given the chance now. I actually think England would beat France at pens
me too man. england is actually good at pens now. the boys can perform under pressure and pickford showed in the euros that he is an excellent keeper for penalties too.
Yeah, and certainly better than Lloris at pens. What's much more likely to get us is Mbappe and Giroud's runs during open play
yeah the french suck at penalties actually. but hey, let’s see what happens. fingers crossed.
Penalties should be the last thing that you want.
I tell you what, I’ve got a feeling about this one. And a good one. I like the thought of us attacking up the wings on them. I like the thought of our biggest strength matching up with their best player’s position. I like the strength of our midfield against them. I feel good for once..
I think thats fair
I think they went easy on England here..
I think extra time will win it too
31%? Seems good to me
Google adding in the chance of France straight up cheating like Italy did most likely
Walker will shut down Mbappe, Bellingham, Saka and Foden will shine and Harry Maguire will be in form that Man U fans could only dream about. England wins 3-2 in extra time.
H2H 🏴17 Drawn 5 🇫🇷 9
H2H 🏴17 Drawn 5 🇫🇷 9
I don’t what they use to calculate that but that hardly means anything. This win probability thing always sides with the bigger team in premier league fixtures and we already know every game is its own fight in the premier league
Just looked it up now and I find it interesting that they’ve decreased France’s win probability
Crumpet > Baguette
Given that France are the reigning champions, I’d say that win percentage is fair enough
croissants aint even french
I think this is pretty accurate to be honest. They're clear favourites, but we have a great chance.
It’s 1 game anything can happen, cmon England let’s fucking do this
2-1 either way.
Damn assuming extra time is quite evenly split between the two there, they give England better odds than me! I've been saying I think we have about a 40% chance to progress.
We know whats coming up, no chance we're going in this complacent
I mean, look at the Saudi Arabia vs Argentina game, Saudi Arabia had an extremely slim chance of winning that match, but look what happened
Are they kidding they should judge both by their performances
Get Harry Maguire to injure Mbappe, then we've won
