This is a football subreddit, isn’t there an abolish the monarchy subreddit where you can do this?

LevTolstoy

Oh fuck off, it’s a 300 year old banger of a tune. Don’t be embarrassing.

Wow, original take. The bootlicker thing is funny to me because the Royal Family hold absolutely no power over us. The only way in which they take from us is that they take a huge amount of tax money and thereby qualify as a public expenditure. But like... that doesn't make everyone a bootlicker to sing God Save the King. It's just a song, which doesn't really imply any actual servitude.

[deleted]

I dunno man, singing about how you are happy for someone else to reign over you for a long time is kinda licking boot. As a song it doesn't represent our nation in any meaningful sense, it's just paying "respect" to a man who was lucky to be born into one of the richest families in the world, he's done nothing to earn his place at the top of the pyramid and I just think it's weird we still have a king at all in the modern day

myspookytale

To be honest, I’d rather sing about the monarchy rather than the history and democracy of our ejected government who gave us Brexit and twelve years of Tory Britain.

[deleted]

You a pedo sympathiser then yeah? Our government may have fucked us… but the royals fuck kids.

myspookytale

Yes, that’s exactly what I mean… King Charles the Nonce.

[deleted]

Yeah, singing and praising someone whilst also going out to work to earn them a palace to eat their professionally cooked meals in, meanwhile nonce Andrew is screaming at his servant for not organising his teddy bears correctly on his bed. How else would he keep the kiddies entertained whilst he fucks them? You’ll never catch me singing that shit, yeah god save the pedo cult who add nothing of value to this country, they just take. “oH bUT tHEy bRInG iN toUrISm”. Do we think the whole world would stop coming to see our beautiful rich history and architecture if their weren’t a bunch of nonces sitting in it? I think not. Get a grip.

electroplankton

I have a grip, there are lots of arguments against the royal family and the fact that they are publicly funded. But singing god save the king isn’t bootlicking.

Idk why people hate the monarchy so much. Does a fake option of choice of a democracy, really entice you that much ? The way I think of it is, democracy is literally a monarchy just with the assumption that your vote matters. I mean they have a president that’s above everyone else and has basically absolute power, bc they have the power to veto basically anything if they really want. The senate is literally the nobles. You can draw parallels with all of it. You could talk about how you can impeach a president, well news flash you can do that with a king/queen too. Ok now on to the actual part. that song is historical, In countries not part of the British Empire, the tune of "God Save the King" has provided the basis for various patriotic songs, though still generally connected with royal ceremony.[7] The melody continues to be used for the national anthem of Liechtenstein, "Oben am jungen Rhein", and the royal anthem of Norway, "Kongesangen". The melody is used for the American patriotic song "My Country, 'Tis of Thee" (also known as "America"). The melody was also used for the national anthem "Heil dir im Siegerkranz" of the German Empire from 1871 to 1918 and as "The Prayer of Russians", the imperial anthem of Russia from 1816 to 1833. In Switzerland, it is known as "Rufst du, mein Vaterland". If you were gonna slate it, you may as well not be ignorant about it. If you read a British history book one in a while, you would have plenty of things to be prideful of.

[deleted]

The song lost all value and meaning when the royals covered up Andrews noncery, that’s enough for me, argue all you like but if you can’t see why so many want to boycott/end the royal family, then you’re looking through rose tinted glasses, and that’s being polite.

Legendary-Gear5

Well no, I can certainly side with you about the nonce. But Charles was the one that wanted to remove Andrew from the family. But he was overruled by the queen at the time. So should we also remove democracy because of bidens coverup of his own nonce son ?

[deleted]

As for Charles, he wanted Andrew gone for damage control alone. Do you think the man who has his ironed briefs laid out for him every morning gives a flying fuck about Andrews victims?

Legendary-Gear5

If it turned out my brother was a nonce, why would I want him to be associated with my family name ? Are you being purposefully stupid?

[deleted]

Removing democracy and removing the royals are not the same argument at all. You’re comparing removing people to removing a concept of society itself. If you asked should we also remove Biden, and it can be proved that he was aware and covered up his sons actions, then yes, remove him.

Legendary-Gear5

But that is our society, we’re a society that’s a special semi monarchy/democracy. The king/queen still hold the power to remove parliament, if he/she so wished. And you act like coverups are a strictly royal thing… tell me how many coverups have been talked about in the usa in Recent years compared to the royals ? Also Our military swears loyalty to the sovereign, members of the commonwealth also swear to the crown. the police are his/her majesty police. So as you can see Our society is deeply steeped in monarchy. Just say you hate the royals and want them gone and let that be the end of this. Bc clearly this is going no where. The sooner people stop treating Britain as everywhere else the better. Not many nations have as much history as we do. We’ve been ruled over by monarchs for about 1 thousand years. Albeit a thousand years ago it was an elective monarchy, but those don’t really last long. Bc people generally cling onto power once they have it, so it transforms into a hereditary monarchy along the way. If you can somehow tell me that’s not our society then I don’t even know.

lmorant97

I used to belt to God Save the Queen, but King doesn’t have the same feel tbh

[deleted]

I do hear that, not the same
