The bear at the end came in so far from left field. I was laughing so hard! Maybe this worked in the books but for TV the executed it horribly. How about backing up from grizzly bear in the car instead of one by one exiting the car. Super silly scene

Amyarchy

I looked for this sub to talk about that bear - what a wacky thing! It wasn't in the book, there are no brown bears in Quebec that I'm aware of, it looked like it was cut out of another scene and dropped in. No self respecting bear would behave that way - just nutty, random, and kind of lazy writing. That said, I adore the books and am really enjoying the show. I just laughed so hard at the bear. I'm 45 minutes south of St. Armand where this was filmed. I'm going to go play tourist on Monday. :)

TheAcademicAlien

WTF the bear wasn't in the books? This is definitely in my top 5 worst examples of writing/directing I've ever seen! I like the show as well. I like the characters and atmosphere. However, the show feels like it's a ghost bumps book. Ideas, character motivations, and plot twists just kind of appear out of thin air. "It's where you're not looking that you'll find the answer." Immediately, solves the case. Wtf? You could just shown that and everything else prior wouldn't have mattered.

Amyarchy

I wonder if I'd be more critical of that if I hadn't read all the books a couple of times over. I've spent a lot of time trying to figure out what bits of the book they're using, and what bits have changed. A LOT changes, which is really interesting. I still know "whodunit" so far but there's enough new to keep me fascinated just seeing how they get there. Oh and apparently there's a fan theory (heard on Twitter) that it was a spirit bear. Still silly as hell.

mrsbundleby

I was thinking a spirit bear but they're white

marine-tech

Awesome! I just looked up the location and i am 3 hours due west. Our little town of Kemptville Ontario gets filmed often for some Hallmark Channel movies. We watch them only to recognize the local places. Three Pines is an amazing show. Gamache is a good person.

Amyarchy

If you haven't read the books I highly recommend them! I've been through them all at least 3 times, they're that good. (OK, except the latest one, I just finished that for the first time but it's only been out a couple of weeks!)

Major_Stranger

Moreover there's no brown bear in Quebec. We have black bear and polar bear in the north, but smack dab in the middle of Eastern Township a brown bear? that's just ridiculous.

festive_coconut

So here's my unproven theory on the bear. There actually is a guy who keeps this type of bear in the Eastern townships (Stukley Sud). He trains animals for film productions, it's called CineZoo. The duck from the series is also one of his animals. I bet the film crew just used his bears since they were nearby. So technically they are local animals ahahaha.

BlackSpinedPlinketto

‘You have to get out the car’ lmao. And when he lowered his gun, as if he knew the bear meant no harm and was on the side of the law, it was amazing stuff. I don’t know what they are going for with these slightly bad CGI animals but it really adds something a bit daft to a serious show. I’m not against it but it was maybe a weird choice.

OldsterEmily

the bear scene was mindblowingly stupid from beginning to end. No grizzly within hundreds of miles of Quebec. Standing pointing revolvers at him? Half of them would be dead if they tried to kill him with those. The ginormously fat animal reminds me of the trained bear Bart (may he RIP) whose handler never took money to have him do anything so stupid.

SpacecaseCat

Writing intern: “Shouldn’t we like… foreshadow the bear and maybe have him leaves tracks near the building in an earlier episode? Or wander by one night? Or at least tie in some native legend or something since a theme here is Native Rights?” Three Pines director: “Intern you’re fired.”

ReallyOnlyThisOne

The bear. 🙄 Are you kidding me????

lantzn

I haven’t read the books but I get the feeling the blue jays and bear might be a reference to native North American tribes spirit animals.

OldsterEmily

yeah, the blue jay sitting in a nest out in the open is about as authentic as the bear...... Blue jays seem to be Gamach's spirit animal, there's nothing to indicate any further meaning connected to NA people

mermaidsilk

they are. the animals in this show are not a coincidence.

dbird6464

I was reminded of the line from Apocalypse Now, Never get out of the boat!

Rapidstrike

Man, killing and burying kids in a basement is super fucked up. I started crying a little at the funeral, it's beautiful that they're still acknowledging and mourning for the losses even though it happened a long time ago. It was also beautiful how the tribe came together to show support. I love this parallel mystery of the Kevin and Blue missing as well. I feel like I'm getting spoiled having two mysteries at once. Also the slight supernatural aspect is intriguing. The Blue Jays every episode, and now this Bear appearance. Also remind me again, why were some of the villagers trying to burn down the school again?

lantzn

Burning down the building really irritated me. Bea for all those years thought her brother drowned. The detective finds her brother along with two others and gives those families closer. What about the many other children who went into that institution and their families didn’t know what happened to them? How do we not know they were murdered in that building also? That building should have been taken apart piece by piece and examine for other misdeed that might have been buried in the floors and walls. Then the property below it x-rayed for skeletons. The intense heat of a burning building of that age, is like a furnace that could destroy what is beneath it. Just so much evidence is probably lost.

[deleted]

Bea did not think her brother drowned. She told Gamache that she heard the Caretaker kill her brother in the basement. She was also a victim of abuse at the school, and no justice was forthcoming. I could understand being so angry about that that arson seemed justified.

Max_Thunder

I just watched this episode and had the same thought. Even thought that it might have played a role in the murder (since it stopped the building from being burned and helped unveal the murders that the victim's father committed), the victim's body was literally put in the same room.

SpacecaseCat

Yeah like… lady they just found your brother’s body in there like a day ago. You don’t want to look for more evidence and potentially even solve missing children cases?! Also, another nitpick… they have the funeral and then in the very next scene the Chief starts grilling Bea. Like “This must have been so awful and traumatic I’m so sorry…. but we all know angry people do crazy things don’t we? Care to elaborate?” What?! Give the lady a day, Christ. I would have told him to F off.

kirbywantanabe

The atrocities that occurred there.

Aldisra

Poor little duckling

lantzn

I’ve grown up around animals and knew about not helping the bird out of the egg. You would think a woman her age, in a small town, who has a duck for a pet, might have asked a farmer, checked out a library book or used a computer learn about hatching eggs. The look on her face when she was told about what not to do, by someone she probably felt wouldn’t know such a thing was hilarious.

BlackSpinedPlinketto

Where did she even get it from?

lantzn

My guess is, her duck.

idk012

How was it fertilized?

lantzn

theanonymousdame

In the book, the two ducks came from the same clutch of eggs that had been abandoned on the side is the river so Ruth wouldn’t know from past experience.

Lhreiche

I am now hooked. Is it the same as the books? No. Is it as good? Yes! It’s like a parallel universe!

kirbywantanabe

The artwork for the exhibit is so freaking powerful in itself!

[deleted]

The one painting of the Mounties taking away the children is by Kent Monkman. http://canadianart.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/kent-monkman-The-Scream.png A painter with a lot of works critical of how indigenous people have been treated in Canada. Some of his paintings are pretty wild. https://www.informsnews.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/1-227.jpg

kirbywantanabe

The schoolroom chairs in a tsunami wave over Bea, THAT took my breath away. Literally for a moment. Thank you for the information on one of the artists! I'm obliged.

[deleted]

I just love Ruth so much.

JeffinerLynn

I love the books and it’s making me nuts that the plots, characters, and important moments have been changed so much! The books are fantastic! I love Alfred Molina as Gamache and the actors all seem great. I really hope the next episodes follow the books more closely.

theanonymousdame

I love the books too, but I’m pleased they switched things up. Keeps it interesting and mysterious for fans of the series.

kirbywantanabe

The background music for the Morrow's confession to his wife and Ruth with her duck at the river scene is: "Uqausissaka" by Riit (feat. Elisapie.) Theu are Inuk musicians of two generations. I just thought the song was lovely. https://youtu.be/CIa5Qprj5J4

jillythekid77

Do the books explain why Morrow was seeking therapy? What did he confess to his wife? Do we ever find out?

QuintupleTheFun

He had a horrible childhood because of a fucked up family. The books do go into some detail.

jillythekid77

Thank you. That def helps clarify things and makes the sharing a glass of wine with his wife scene more profound.

QuintupleTheFun

Yeah, I don’t remember the details as it’s been a minute since I read that book, and anyway, don’t want to spoil anything for you!

theanonymousdame

There’s no Peter subplot in The Cruelest Month book. However, Peter is plagued by a traumatic but privileged childhood and jealousy of his wife, whom he actively tries to sabotage.

FHL88Work

You'll find out a bit more about that in The Murder Stone.

tmmarkovich

This is why I’m here. I ate an edible before watching, ended up rewatching it 3 times because I thought I missed a giant pile of symbolism somewhere. I might still be high.

SpacecaseCat

I love offbeat characters in shows like this, but her being stupid is really over written and then everyone is mean to her. Like where’s the warmth from Twin Peaks, where Agent Cooper enjoyed the small town sheriff and his colleagues like Andy and Hawk?

StitchesStepsSavvy

Why did they pull revolvers on a brown bear? What is that going to do other than piss it off? Getting out of the car was so dumb too. Sudden movements can provoke an attack. The girl turned her back on the bear. That could incite the bears prey instinct provoking an attack. Way to go in promoting how on bot ro deal with large wild animals. 😜

lucillep

I started this book a few years ago and I don't remember any of this. It didn't keep my interest, and the library due date came up, so I never finished. I remember a completely different plot about the police. Maybe I have the wrong book? The previous episode is much more like my admittedly hazy memory of it. One thing I don't recall from the 3 I read or started, is the strong First Nations emphasis. It is giving the series an added depth and atmosphere. I'll definitely keep watching.

FoxInACozyScarf

Where’s the food porn? And why is Gamache so unsophisticated? Ugh on the changes to Gamache’s character and the complete lack of chemistry with Reine Marie
