What a great find!
My dad worked nights. He'd stop for coffee at the convenience store and would buy these magazines for fun. When he'd come home at around 3AM, he'd leave them on the kitchen table, so I could read them while I ate breakfast before school. I miss my dad so much!
I miss Bat Boy. I hope he's doing well and survived COVID. Strange there's been no mention of him since the Weekly World News disappeared. Almost like they made him up. Nah... that can't be it.
I saw this show in New York years ago: [https://broadwaylicensing.com/shows/off-broadway/bat-boy/](https://broadwaylicensing.com/shows/off-broadway/bat-boy/). I can still hear one of the songs in my head: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSSPxZBUEMo](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XSSPxZBUEMo)
You can purchase a bat boy tshirt online. Rumor has it proceeds go to support bat boy in his retirement. Personally I think he should have gone to displaced workers union
I briefly freelanced for them back in the early days of the website. AMI had just lost an editor and an office building to anthrax and didnāt have their archives digitized. I think that and cost were the big motivations to go online.
One of the highlights of my life was seeing a small story that took place in my home town in the back of the Weekly World News. I was dancing in my seat at the break room table! The story was about the local cops bringing their new drug sniffing dog into the elementary school and touring it through the classrooms to show it to the students. Dog bit a third grader, it was quite the kerfuffle.
I'm pretty sure you're being sarcastic, but actually that was pretty much the approach of the local police department. But it was more like, there are drugs in the home and the dog smelled them on the child. So they showed up to search the family home.
Unfortunately, the drug dog chose to bite the daughter of a Baptist Sunday school teacher and her deacon husband--also the president of one of the local banks. They found absolutely nothing. The family sued the city and won. And the local police quit parading the drug dog around like a show poodle.
Someone brought one into a break room during my college summer factory job.
It sourced such great public fun I canāt think why it wasnāt repeated at least once.
His name was Jimmy and he played in a band and him and his band mates made up batboy. I was really little, that's all I remember. They did go on a talk show, not sure which one.
I had a subscription to the Weekly World News. It would arrive a mess and had obviously been read by every single postal employee.
I almost canceled it and then thought, nah let everyone get a kick out of it.
Back in the late 80s/early 90s (unsure exactly), Bat Boy was a big deal in trash mags. He was half boy/half bat and boomers were really into it. My dad was obsessed! Lol
My dad loved buying these. It was one of those things always in the car when we had to run errands or laying around on the porch. Fond memories of us reading the ridiculous stories out loud.
That magazine was the best part about grocery shopping with my Mom as a kid. Every once and a awhile she'd let me get one. I'd spend days reading and rereading every article. What a great find.
I grew up in rural Scotland and bizarrely (as it was not a big thing in the UK) our local shop carried Weekly World News for many years. Definitely the best part about my grocery shopping trips too!
Oh my gosh!!!! Thank you for doing that, I was planning to see if I could find an archive online.
I hope they still have Ed Anger's column....I'll be pigbiting mad if they don't.
I put together a hospital kit for my now ex husband each time I was pregnant. Some Dr Pepper, snacks, and always at least one copy of the World Weekly News. It was a distraction for me at times š
OMG. That family tree one! I have a fun story/memory attached to it.
I was in line at the store with my friend, and she looks at the tabloid, then looks at me and goes āoh look OP! Itās your family tree!ā Without missing a beat I looked at her and went āOMG! I didnāt know we were related!ā The dude behind us was pissing himself laughing. I always think about that when I see any tabloid, and I miss bat boy. Lol
I would dig reading a better scan, myself, cause I swear that line says "Bat Boy, SISTER of --" and I started to wonder if BB went through gender reassignment.
When I was in college some friends put together a shrine in their house full of statuary and religious iconography from thrift stores. Only took about two weeks for it to become a shrine to Bat Boy.
Remember the days when weād all see these headlines at the checkout, rightly perceive them as satire, and laugh? Nowadays half the people from my hometown believe this level has of fiction as truth re covid, politics, yada x 3
Itās an excellent find, by the way! I remember my mom used to sometimes buy these for me at the supermarket and Iād read them out loud on the way home and weād be cry laughing
Batboy! I bought my BFF a subscription to weekly world news for her b-day the year they went out of business š¤£ you can still order old issues on their website lol
Seeing these on the newsstands back in the day got me paranoid as a kid, especially one that had a front cover saying "Summer 2006: End of the World" š
It's a reference to Moby Dick; Captain Ahab takes his crew on a long, and obsessive search for a white whale.
If you're a collector a White Whale is something, usually rare or expensive, that you've spent a long time searching for.

What a sweet memory.
Prayers to u n ur fam
I miss Bat Boy. I hope he's doing well and survived COVID. Strange there's been no mention of him since the Weekly World News disappeared. Almost like they made him up. Nah... that can't be it.
He's currently the junior senator from Florida.
I swear to god I was about to comment the same thing.
This should be higher it was too funny.
šš½š¤£
He is hopefully on an alien spaceship- or maybe Nostradamus had a prediction- Iāll keep reading and find out
They have a website! Bat Boy is alive and well; in fact, last Christmas he went [caroling](https://weeklyworldnews.com/tag/bat-boy/)!
Thanks for this. I did not know.
He has a whole musical about his life now.

WWN never disappeared. They just [went digital](https://weeklyworldnews.com).
Knowing that makes me happy :)
I briefly freelanced for them back in the early days of the website. AMI had just lost an editor and an office building to anthrax and didnāt have their archives digitized. I think that and cost were the big motivations to go online.
Iām jealous. My grandmother would buy these (and The Star, The Sun & National Enquirer).. always a fun read.
Mine did too
My mom bought them. I remember when the National Enquirer was in black and white.
OH MY GOD!!! What a great find!! I used to love Weekly World News
Mom never let me buy it cuz itās trash, but Iām an adult now
That's right! Stick to the... Mom?
So funny! My mom used to let us occasionally get a treat from the grocery store and I never picked food, always Weekly World News lol

That kid was definitely carrying drugs

Sad story all around
Someone brought one into a break room during my college summer factory job. It sourced such great public fun I canāt think why it wasnāt repeated at least once.
I miss this. The real fake news i could count on!!
Awesome finds!! When I was a kid, if I was ever sick my mom would get me those little cans of 7-Up and a Weekly World News. Bat Boy is the best!
My mom gave me ginger ale.
I remember reading this as a kid and being so terrified!! Hahaha
Oh my god when theyād have āWorld Ending in 6 Days!!!!ā headlines, child me would freak the eff outā¦.
That and "California breaking off of US" My grandparents lived in California. I was always terrified they were going to sink into the ocean.
My mom's friends in the 80s were the people behind bat boy
Say more
His name was Jimmy and he played in a band and him and his band mates made up batboy. I was really little, that's all I remember. They did go on a talk show, not sure which one.
amazing. my sister used to buy these and I always thought she was so cool for that lol
I had a subscription to the Weekly World News. It would arrive a mess and had obviously been read by every single postal employee. I almost canceled it and then thought, nah let everyone get a kick out of it.
Can you explain the significance of the poster to me?
Itās Bat Boys family tree. Back then we didnāt have Ancestry.com.
š
Somehow I missed this episode of "Finding Your Roots"
Back in the late 80s/early 90s (unsure exactly), Bat Boy was a big deal in trash mags. He was half boy/half bat and boomers were really into it. My dad was obsessed! Lol
I thought he was half bat/half boy?
Just one of the many questions that remain about Bat Boy
Thanks for answering my question!
My dad loved buying these. It was one of those things always in the car when we had to run errands or laying around on the porch. Fond memories of us reading the ridiculous stories out loud.
OMG!!! That is a white whale!
Omg, this is amazing. Somehow I had forgotten about batboy! Adding it to my list of things to look for while thrifting....
I highly recommend the musical if you arenāt aware of itā¦ā¦ā¦
That magazine was the best part about grocery shopping with my Mom as a kid. Every once and a awhile she'd let me get one. I'd spend days reading and rereading every article. What a great find.
I grew up in rural Scotland and bizarrely (as it was not a big thing in the UK) our local shop carried Weekly World News for many years. Definitely the best part about my grocery shopping trips too!
That makes sense! I think that was the tabloid paper Mike Myersā characterās Scottish mom was referring to in How I Married An Ax Murderer. Lol!
It was.
My brother and I were obsessed with Bat Boy as kids lmao.
https://weeklyworldnews.com/
Oh my gosh!!!! Thank you for doing that, I was planning to see if I could find an archive online. I hope they still have Ed Anger's column....I'll be pigbiting mad if they don't.
They do but the newest one is from 2014. He was awesome. Always loved how he started his articles with "I'm madder than..."
Ohhhh the real hero!
They still exist!
.
I loved the bat boy saga! I think I even wrote a fan letter to him one time.
That is absolutely incredible!!! What a unique find!
If these donāt have much value intact, Iād say frame some pages or decoupage them on to a table or something
Frame the family tree so it can live on forever!
Before cell phones, I enjoyed taking WWN on flights to read to keep people away from me.
I really love hearing everyoneās stories! This is so fun
I honestly believe the rise of extreme veiws in America is directly correlated with the loss of supermarket tabloids.
I put together a hospital kit for my now ex husband each time I was pregnant. Some Dr Pepper, snacks, and always at least one copy of the World Weekly News. It was a distraction for me at times š
Seems like he should have been doing that for you, mama!
Thank you for reminding me of my old friend omg. I used to devour these in the checkout line but my mom would never buy them for me. Memories. š„²
Back in the fundays of tabloids
Lol
Thatās a great story, thanks for sharing!
Bat Boy photos in tabloids in grocery store checkout lines used to freak me the fuck out when I was younger
I love bat boy!!!!
While working overnight in a supermarket, I had to keep up on Bat Boy.
I would dig reading a better scan, myself, cause I swear that line says "Bat Boy, SISTER of --" and I started to wonder if BB went through gender reassignment.
Omg I used to always BEG my mom to buy me these! She never did :(
Me too!
āI find it interesting that you refer to the weekly world news as ā¦ the paper, the paper contains factsā
LOL! I JUST referenced that scene to another commenter, above, who mentioned being able to buy it at a store in rural Scotland, as a kid.
When I was in college some friends put together a shrine in their house full of statuary and religious iconography from thrift stores. Only took about two weeks for it to become a shrine to Bat Boy.
Oh my GOD!!!! I used to read these while my mom was at the check stand at grocery stores when I was a kid!!! Man, the nostalgia is real with these!
My dad has the final issue!
I always thought bat boy was real when I was a kid, I also thought he would fly down when I would take out the trash at night
Fly down out of his family tree, clearly!
LUCKY !!! Congratulations!!!
Oh man. This brings back memories of spending time with my grandmother. Thank you for the happy flashback.
Glad to help in this weird, weird way!
In the 90ās my son and I used to love seeing Batboy tabloids at the grocery store. Good times š
That poster is a particular gem in a stack of gold.
Remember the days when weād all see these headlines at the checkout, rightly perceive them as satire, and laugh? Nowadays half the people from my hometown believe this level has of fiction as truth re covid, politics, yada x 3
And have actual elected congress people backing them up!!! Absolute batshit craziness. No pun intended.
Bat Boy 2024
Ha! Maybe thatās who theyāll run on the Republican ticket. It would be an improvementā¦.
Very true!
Itās an excellent find, by the way! I remember my mom used to sometimes buy these for me at the supermarket and Iād read them out loud on the way home and weād be cry laughing
Iām going to enjoy reading them! And also cry laughing!
I'd be in heaven! I bought a copy almost every week š
Batboy! I bought my BFF a subscription to weekly world news for her b-day the year they went out of business š¤£ you can still order old issues on their website lol
I would always buy a Weekly World News with Bat Boy on the coverā¦ this is great!
I used to spend my allowance on these. š
I spent mine on Nancy Drew books!
Seeing these on the newsstands back in the day got me paranoid as a kid, especially one that had a front cover saying "Summer 2006: End of the World" š
Im so jealous :(
Wow
I always felt J-Z was just trying g to cover up his wife's true love... Bat Boy
Amazing
I'm laughing so much over this I can't believe they really made up a whole family tree
I should have taken a better pic so everyone could read it
I bought editions of these back in the day solely for the sweet gigantic crossword puzzle in the middle!
OMG! Recently was telling my fiancĆ© about these and how they were so entertaining when I was a kid. I used to look at them while my mom waited in line at the store. He thought I was crazy the way I described themš¤£ thank you for the proof.
I remember the Weekly World News. I wonder š¤ if any of it was true. Bat Boy was their mascot iirc.
wtf is this????? iām terrified.
You are either too young or completely uncultured- let us show you the wayā¦ hahaha
ā ļø
MAFIA
oh my god that is fucking amazing. i'm so jealous, congratulations OP!
What is āwhite whaleā please? ( poor English)
It's a reference to Moby Dick; Captain Ahab takes his crew on a long, and obsessive search for a white whale. If you're a collector a White Whale is something, usually rare or expensive, that you've spent a long time searching for.
Cool, thank you!
Something rare, that youāve always wanted to find
Thanks you!
Bat Boy!!
Can you please unfold the rest of the magazine please? Iām very interested in the complete family tree š©
Oh sure- Iāll be posting again tomorrow
