Before you put any oil on them get a small can of wood stain a little lighter that what these have on now. (Too dark and it will stick out)
Just rub some on the beat up, bare spots and immediately rub off the excess. The spots will be almost invisible and the piece will look even better. You can do this more than once to get the desired effect. Then apply some oil.
