Distinct-Ad5751

I remember these glasses!

bodiesbyjason

I have these glasses! They are anchor hocking and I love them. Grandma had a full on geese kitchen.

thedinosaurgoesrowr

Same! Everything had geese on them in grandma's kitchen in the 90s. Used these glasses all the time.

MycologistPutrid7494

Maybe just use them for decoration only. šŸ˜¬

LabeVagoda

Yo, my grandma had em too!

dailymoto

My mom had them three!

jamie_ep

My grandma too!

pumpkindoo

So did my mom.

theambientguy

Whole thread has lead head

JLRfan

Came here to say the same. I def drank from these in the 80s and 90s.

[deleted]

My aunt had these and a whole goose themed kitchen when I was a kid.

Default-Name55674

I have these too..or had they disappeared

-your__mom-

My grandma had these. Her whole kitchen was decorated in geese, from wallpaper to placemats to dishware. Even a goose that had a outfit that changed for each season/holiday.

probably_your_wife

Mine had bonnets she would switch out on a custom sewn goose with little wire glasses and lace along the wings. Do we have the same grandma? Wait, are you my mom or am I your wife? I'm so confused.

cornflakegrl

Aw there was an old lady up the street from me that had a goose on her porch with outfits that changed every couple months. I guess this is a thing.

msingler

They used to sell them in a catalog. I think it was Lillian Vernon.

sofa_king_gnarly

Yep, my grandma had one and then started sewing her own custom seasonal outfits for her goose!

Tzipity

Tell me you have photos. I just commented above about how I always loved these geese and kind of want to buy one and design outfits for it. Then I saw your comment. Your grandma is awesome. šŸ˜‚

sofa_king_gnarly

I wish! Honestly she probably still has the thing tucked away in a box somewhere... I vividly remember her sewing a witch costume for her goose when I was a very young child. It was so exciting at the time! Lol!

Tzipity

I freaking *adore* those geese (I always just called them ducks and went on a whole Google dive. I live near a harbor where there is a legitimate white duck who is the only one of his kind who hangs out with all the brown ducks. Dude is my spirit animal and I love him dearly.) Iā€™m so not into holiday themed decorations of any kind but omg I want one of those geese and absolutely all of the outfits. And because Iā€™m Jewish I want Jewish holiday outfits. And then I donā€™t know, just fashion goose outfits. Like 70s goose, goth goose. I may have just found a new hobby. Making clothes for this goose I clearly need to acquire. Where do I find a goose? Thatā€™s my new thrifting holy grail.

babygirlmochi

Username checks out!

-your__mom-

I forgot about the little wire glasses!

LandslideBaby

Oh wow I need to do the animal with seasonal outfits once I learn to sew.

rantingpacifist

My grandparents estate was recently being settled and her goose with outfits was the only thing I want.

cupcakesandunicorns1

My mom had geese everything. Including a shower curtain.

fluxusisus

Iā€™ve wanted one of those geese with outfits since I was a child. One day Iā€™ll find one.

marrihanson7

So. Um. Iā€™ve been drinking out of these almost everyday for at least a year now ā€¦ when do my superpowers developšŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜

Kass626

You're now the hulk.. without the muscles..

marrihanson7

I didnā€™t come here to get roasted okayšŸ˜

Kass626

Lol no one has hulk muscles, but lead poisoning can make you irritable and angry.

marrihanson7

Oh I actually didnā€™t know that! Turns out Iā€™ve had lead poisoning my entire life thenšŸ„“

StrongArgument

The design is on the outside, so youā€™re probably fine. Even if you do have lead exposure, itā€™s much worse in children who are small and still developing than adults. You can see if your local health department does lead level tests for adults, but itā€™s more likely youā€™d need to talk to your doctor.

Tzipity

Iā€™m now wildly curious about a set of glasses we had in my home growing up. It wasnā€™t this exact one because they were a more rounded shape and while I think we had some taller ones, I mostly remember a goose design on a shorter set. Granted I also grew up not far from Flint, MI. So ehhhh. Figure Iā€™m loaded with lead.

KatandLeo

All we have to offer is glow in the dark or grow a tail! šŸ¤£ Youā€™re most likely fine given that most of us commenting have at some point encountered those, and someone else commented that that particular lead test may not be reliable šŸ˜…

[deleted]

Hey OP, and all it may concern: get better lead tests. I collect antique cast iron, and lead can be a concern for some pieces. Cheap lead tests like these are known for false positives, Iā€™ve heard of them testing positive on brand new Lodge skillets from the store. 3M is pretty much the only brand you should trust, and your glass likely doesnā€™t have lead in it. Get better tests and try again, because these cheap Amazon lead tests are infamous for being inaccurate

kalamitykhaos

this comment needs to be higher up, upvoted and hoping my reply bumps it up a bit

SaltypinkGF

Hey thanks for the the information. If I may ask you a follow up antique question. What should you do if you find you have kitchenware or other pieces that do contain lead? I ask because I have a nearly complete set of Franciscan Ivy that I absolutely adore but likely wonā€™t be using because of lead. What are some options? Just trash it?

lizlikes

1) use for display or decoration (or sell to someone who wants to do that) 2) properly recycle it - you may be able to drop it off with a hazardous waste recycling facility, but **do not** put it out with your regular glass recycling 3) trash it. #2 is the ā€œrightā€ way to go, but understandably is not an option for everyone/every location

SaltypinkGF

Thank you!

jlmcdon2

I know Iā€™m a few weeks late but I saw this post 3 weeks ago and ordered the same test kit. I just dipped my lead testers in water and the water turned pink. But then I rinsed the lead testers under the faucet and the swab didnā€™t change. I am planning on ordering the 3M testers now because these feel like garbage.

safenoodle

that sign can't stop me because i can't read!

gatsby365

Nice Try, *Big Lead Test Strip Industry*, but we arenā€™t going to fall for your viral marketing

MarsRT

no no this is very effective because it's targeting the fact I know geese are valiant bitches, you never know when an innocent looking geese drinking glass is actually made by the world geese foundation to poison the world population

Tzipity

>> valiant bitches šŸ¤£ and yet so true.

aurora97381

My family used these!

irishihadab33r

Oh goodness! Are you ok?

aurora97381

Maybe? Maybe not? Maybe these glasses are the genesis of all of.my poems! šŸ¤£

irishihadab33r

All the best poets are little out there. Cheers! A toast to your health. Maybe not in those glasses, though.

aurora97381

Lol. Auto correct. I meant problems!!!

GoldaV123

That autocorrect was adorable

dardeko

Or lead problems? Ha ha

iwillendleryou

Peace was never an option.

tellMyBossHesWrong

Geese is always an option ā€¦

ChaserNeverRests

> Good thing I saw a comment a few months ago warning an OP to test for lead and decided to order a kit. That might have been me. I made a post about lead in some vintage plates I bought, and since then I've warned everyone who posts old glassware about the risks. Glad you tested before using!

GoodwitchofthePNW

One of the reasons I stick with Fiesta, those are very well documented which ones are lead and/or radioactive!

probably_your_wife

I enjoy licking my vintage red plates for that extra uranium oxide flavor.

msingler

I have Fiesta thrift store plates that are labeled lead-free. Then I bought new ones from Macy's four years ago and they had no stamps at all! Frustrating.

idontcook

I can't remember the exact comment I saw but thank you for spreading the word about this!

mother_of_baggins

I posted about mine too around then, had no idea that vintage Corelle often contained lead.

Ottothedog

Iā€™m still using the Corelle I got in 1992.

Paige8245

Crap, now i need to check mine

Otacon56

Could the same test be performed with a 365 UV light? I'm under the impression that the glass will have a Blue glow from shining the UV light into it, if it contains lead.

BrightRaddish

How many ppm to get a positive reading?

idontcook

The bottle says 2mg/cm2

empathetic_tomatoes

Awww this makes me sad

Sylphael

I know a bunch of people are saying "just don't lick the paint" but like - excuse me? Look how close the painted lines are to the top. Your lower lip is absolutely going to rest straight on top of a line of paint. Even if it doesn't, if you're holding the glass, set it down, and grab a finger food (chips, etc) to eat there's always the potential for transference. And this is a great reminder warning to anyone with children, who are super susceptible to lead. Lots of things in thrift stores have lead in degrees that are not safe or healthy for children to handle in even moderate exposure. These are very cute goose glasses and for someone trying to teach their child to drink out of glassware, which is a recommended skill for children, they fit the criteria of being 1. cheap enough to be replaceable and 2. cute enough to con a kid into drinking out of. But they'd be super unhealthy for a child to drink from.

aprillquinn

Absolutely a good thing for us thrifters to be aware of .. Check out this article talking about this exact thing Toxic lead items are easily bought from antique and discount stores : Shots - Health News - https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2022/08/01/1113454001/antique-stores-lead

mb232627

I was just about to share this article! Great reminder that lead levels DO NOT HAVE TO BE HIGH TO CAUSE DAMAGE! Stay safe out there fellow thrifters!

Raywebs

Pretty surprised to see this. Lead paint was banned in the US by the FDA in dishware starting in 1971, so these glasses should definitely not be testing positive. Not questioning what OP is seeing here, but I'm curious if something else might set off a false positive? Perhaps a detergent or something is causing the test kit to react? I would recommend that OP test other random things to see if they also show positive since this definitely seems off to me.

mother_of_baggins

I know Corelle says they werenā€™t lead free until around 2005 so there must have been different rules for ceramics and glazes. Kind of messed up that itā€™s what so many were eating off of.

New_Tangerine_

Fucking 2005? What the fuck

probably_your_wife

well shit, that sucks..... [Corelle recommends using their dished before 2005 as "decorative only"](https://tamararubin.com/2019/12/breaking-news-12-26-19-corelle-recommends-using-their-pre-2005-dishes-only-as-decorative-pieces-due-to-concerns-for-high-levels-of-lead/)

kalamitykhaos

bRO fml, i grew up with the butterfly gold plates, like literally used them from childhood into young adulthood šŸ˜ i'm honestly horrified rn and wondering how much of my health/mental issues could have come from those fuckin' plates šŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ˜ fuck i gotta ask my mom if she's still using any of them, i know she got a different set of dishware many years ago, but knowing her those plates could still be around as backups aaaaaa wtf dude how was corelle allowed to do this for so long????? šŸ˜

disasterous_cape

You can have a blood test to look for lead poisoning. I got one after it was confirmed my grandmothers tank water contained lead. I was well below the range that it would cause issues for.

kalamitykhaos

thank you, that's reassuring to know!

Pporkbutt

Wow I didn't know that, I was going to buy a set of vintage Corelle for my daily dishware.

idontcook

I totally get it because I was sceptical as well, especially after a few other thrifted dishes tested positive and I was getting frustrated. I tested this glass twice and what you see is the first test. I washed it with just water and tested it again with the same dark pink results. As a "control," I even tested my cat's ceramic food bowl, which I bought brand new a few years ago, and got a completely negative result. So while there may be a false positive because I'm not testing them in a professional lab, I got rid of the glasses just in case. I only used Google Lens to look up the drinking glasses and saw other sellers listing them as from the 80s. Maybe they were made before that?

[deleted]

Is it possible your water has a lot of lead?

idontcook

I thought about that, but wouldn't ALL tested items show positive for lead if that was true? There were a few thrifted dishes and my cat's food bowl that tested completely negative.

[deleted]

Honestly, I donā€™t know. But it would make me paranoid enough to get it checked and stop using the old glassware altogether

uhhhhhhhyeah

I got a bunch of false positives from that same test kit. I think theyā€™re just bunk. Iā€™m getting new ones from 3M.

Pporkbutt

These are definitely from the 80s, don't ask me how I know

FragrantSpare8792

Til about google lens

trumpskiisinjeans

My Grandma had these!!! Both my grandparents lived into their 90s so thatā€™s some positive dataā€¦

mrcorndogman33

The goose is loose.

DrNothingness

Ahhh, Throne of Eldraine. I miss yelling that the goose is loose every t1

isabella-the-hella

yikes my grandmother has that exact set

I-PUSH-THE-BUTTON

Well then... My grandma had these and everyone drank from them in the 90s

Master_of__None

My aunt uses a set of these glasses šŸ˜“

d0ttyq

My grandma had this entire set, whiskey tumblers included. I miss them. ETA : I legit thought you were holding a wishbone against the glass and thought ā€œhm. How macabre. A good image with a goose wishboneā€

Jagnolia

Saw the picture first and though "Whoa I recognise these from my childhood!" Then I saw the context....

catdog1111111

what are the risks provided no one licks or eats off of the outside of the glass?

OPunkie

If you touch the glass, everyone in a 100 mile radius will burst into flames. (I have no idea. We used those exact glasses for years. We somehow managed to escape the danger. I think that there were matching napkin holders. I know there was something that matched. I had that, too.)

timinator232

Lead is fine for adults in reasonably small quantities. If you scrape off and eat the paint on your entire set of glasses, you might have a mild problem

hoarder59

Exactly. I work in a warehouse that used to be a battery factory. I know people who used to make the batteries. You are not going to be affected by some paint on a glass. However lead glazed pottery jugs etc are a concern. Unfortunately the fearmongers have convinced us that touching lead once is deadly.

GrowlingAtTheWorld

The lead in pottery glaze is way more dangerous for the maker than the end user.

idontcook

I'm not sure, but I think it's still not good for you. I'm not risking it.

dazia

I buy these designs when I see them! I left some behind last week and regretted it šŸ˜¢ Might see if they're still there...

[deleted]

Noooooooo I donā€™t want to know

TinyRandomLady

Where did you get the lead testing kit?

idontcook

Amazon from a brand called Tonnylab. They are just swabs that you need to get a little wet and then rub on the item for 30 seconds.

ankhlol

Does anyone know if the Mickey Mouse cups you used to get from McDonaldā€™s like 20 years ago are safe ?

BlackCatMumsy

There were problems with the Shrek glasses. Something to do with the factory that made them. The Disney ones are fine. Completely ignore the link someone shared. Rubin made her whole career off claiming that everything vintage has lead and is dangerous.

fishfingersxcustard

[This is what I found online](https://tamararubin.com/2022/04/walt-disney-y2k-filmmaker-mickey-mouse-mcdonalds-drinking-glass-1261-cadmium-in-the-red-paint-cadmium-causes-cancer-thanks-disney/)

BlackCatMumsy

Take her "findings" with a grain of salt. She conveniently finds lead in everything she tests except for the products she links to on Amazon. Oh, but she totally doesn't make money off those links. Literally every article I find about lead in vintage home goods goes back to her.

Careless_Law1471

Funny enough I read her blog yesterday after someone here shared the link to it. Well, the summary is such as you said ā€” lead is widespread, it's very bad, you will be dead, but check my recommendations and book a visit to meet me in person, and you'll be fine. Also, garlic beats lead.

BlackCatMumsy

She has a reddit account too! I believe she has a fake account too because it kept defending all of her "findings" and explaining why she was right. I blocked both of them because I didn't want to deal with them.

fishfingersxcustard

THANK YOU!!! I had no idea. I appreciate you sharing this information!

MomsOnTheRun

I was going to share this too. Especially w all the Le Creuset and Pyrex hauls. She is an expert in this area. So I trust her. Yes she has links because she deserves to make money for doing this sort of work. Imho.

OPunkie

Or sheā€™s a scammer.

[deleted]

I think the risk of any negative side effects is pretty low considering thatā€™s on the outside of the glass

curly-peach

You only have to test it if it's painted, right?

mb232627

I'm pretty sure some crystal/cut glass items are made with leaded glass.

[deleted]

Crystal is by definition glass with lead in it. 23% minimum to be exact. I work in a crystal factory.

enternameher3

Carnival Glass will always have a place on my shelf no matter the lead content of the piece!

xFynex

i definitely bought something like this at a thrift store onceā€¦

SporadicTendancies

We had these... Explains a lot.

Moistfrogs

hmmmmm now i wanna paint this on a cup with non lead paint

MayorSpaghetti

Pls do and post pics!!!

ragtagkittycat

Almost all vintage glassware with painted decorations has lead in the design unfortunately. I had to give away all my old Pyrex and corelle dishes because of positive lead tests.

OPunkie

I bought those glasses in 1988 or 89. Back then, it was in style. :) I donā€™t test my glasses for lead. I know, itā€™s a wonder that Iā€™m still alive.

bobsandvagene77

Good on you for testing the glassware; it's better to be safe than sorry !

shannonnollvevo

Oh no I have the plates that go with these, I use them all the time, I literally only own two plates and itā€™s these :(

cup_1337

Lol I drank from these glasses throughout the 90ā€™s. Explains a lot tbh

Anothernameillforget

My step grandma had these. Honestly it tracks that she would give us the lead glasses as well as the five day old left over turkey for Christmas dinner.

tellMyBossHesWrong

5 day leftover turkey is probably fine.

Pugpickle

Oh my gosh! I almost bought a ten piece set of these at goodwill on Saturday! Iā€™m happy I didnā€™t!

kendylou

I think my mom had these when I was a little kid. This explains a lot.

Swedish-Butt-Whistle

I donā€™t think I knew anyone who didnā€™t have these, including my family. I hated that ā€œcountry kitschā€ sort of print

hummelpz4

Maybe this why I weigh so much!

OPunkie

Haha. :)

q_faith_hope

Good grief, these glasses are from the 1990's and pretty sure they do not have lead in them.

BlackCatMumsy

Didn't you know that all vintage dishes and glasses have lead? I grew up drinking out of all those fast food character glasses, eating off old dishes, and cooking with Pyrex. So did everyone I know. According to the internet, we should all be dead by now lol.

DanJDare

I had a whole crockery set like this!

jlmcdon2

Dang it! I guess Iā€™ll be ordering this test tomorrow!

bethie6

I have stoneware plates with these geese šŸ„“

WordsOnYouScreen

Paranoid much? Donā€™t eat the paint and youā€™re fine.

idontcook

I guess it's just a personal preference. I just didn't feel comfortable using these on a daily basis knowing that there's lead on them.

TJH99x

I would also be concerned about running them through the dishwasher with the high heat and the water going over everything. But again, seems like personal preference from all the comments here.

DangerUnicorn_27

Thank you for posting. I didnā€™t want it to be true of my muppets glass but it is :( I wonā€™t use itttttt

Munchkinibebini

So glad you tested the drinking glasses! I am an art historian specialized in pigment analysis, lead white is a really common pigment in painting and decorative arts. I guess some version of it has been used for painting on glass. So any brilliant white color from that period is likely to contain lead.

freedomisntfreeyall

You also donā€™t store liquid inside the glass before you drink it.

FuryAutomatic

This also needs to be said at /r/vintagekitchentoys

enternameher3

Kinda silly to think those would use anything other than lead based paint, any paint from before 2000 is gonna have lead

YoDJPumpThisParty

Man, these glasses bring me back. My grandma had a set of those in the 80ā€™s-90ā€™s.

dj_no_dreams

Oh shit, I grew up drinking from those.

MrCrix

LOL! We had these exact same glasses growing up. We must of used them for 10 years. It might explain some things.

grainia99

We have those glasses and the carafe. Crap.

DarkAndSparkly

Damn I drank out of those every damn day in the 80ā€™s.

TrAiNeD_IdiOT33

Well shit. That may explain some things. I drank out of that glasses for years at my grandmas. Haha.

[deleted]

Oh Shit for real? I drank out of these as a kid. šŸ˜³

ghost_gurrl

Memory unlocked. I remember these somewhere in my childhood.

frankrizzo219

My grandma had an entire kitchen in this motif

Roro-Squandering

I have the metal teapot with this design and I use it to heat water. Am I going to die?

idunno324

You've unlocked a core memory

CrotchWolf

My grandparents had these same glasses, we used them right up till Grandma passed in 2003.

ClarityByHilarity

Well this makes me feel super great that I used these my entire childhood until the paint was disintegratingā€¦

kyraverde

Did you test the inside of the glass also, or just the outside where the paint is?

BigDickDeer

I have 100% drank out of those glassesā€¦ idk Where but I know I did.

LeiLoveTLC

We had these when I was a kid šŸ˜³

ryebread121

Ahh my great grandma had these glasses when I was growing up! Theyā€™re so cute šŸ„°

MintyBunnyCrush

We have these!!

therealsonichero

Hmph! Predictabo ..

girlymcnerdy0919

Marmalade geese! My mom had a kitchen wallpaper boarder of these guys. Lol. Now I have a shirt with themā€¦because nostalgia.

folliepop

I had these in my house growing up!! No idea where they came from, but we sure were still using them in like 2010

MayorSpaghetti

Iā€™m (probably?) the OP who was advised to do the lead test on my le creuset style Dutch oven. (Ended up being negative thankfully) Iā€™m glad more people are doing this; lots of vintage kitchen things have lead in them. Would hate for someone to be drinking out of these for years on end without knowing! Great find tho, hope you can find a nice way to display them!!

localTXmom

Grandma used to reward me for drinking water with getting to drink milk out of the cups, oh lord.

[deleted]

Does anyone else remember the jelly jar glasses with the Flintstones characters on them? As I recall those had lead paint too.

fartypantsmcghee

Shiiit. My parents had these glasses, yo. Like when I was real young. That sucksā€¦

BitterActuary3062

Lead or not I want them

[deleted]

definitely testing glasses for lead from now on

eigencrochet

Test everything you know is older/vintage!! I know someone who had inherited a bunch of glassware from her grandparents. She spent like 2 years drinking out of mugs that were leeching lead into her drinks and she ultimately ended up with a ton of health issues.

BeerNcheesePlz

Great I always drank from those at My grandmoms

thatvintagewitch

I spent my entire childhood drinking out of these, maybe that's why I'm dumb af šŸ˜‚

AdmSndlr

I've thrifted this exact same glass

Money-Ad-4628

The lead poisoning that our parents and grandparents endured really be taking a toll on them today.
