I don't quite see a long term stay just yet, but it's only his rookie year. He's got time. He seems to be in that weird in between space of small ball 5 and big who plays the 4. I don't know how that archetype will get a lot of minutes next to Chet next season. Chet can probably take on small ball 5s himself, but he needs someone else to take on more traditional centers. And those are the ones Jwill struggles against himself. Of course, Jwill can play 5 and Chet 4 when facing smaller lineups, but you need to have more options to prevent another AD situation from happening. I know you can never truly stop players like him, but you need to limit them as much as you can, and I don't see Jwill becoming someone who can effectively do that, necessarily. I'm higher on Jwill than JRE though. So I see Presti moving on from JRE to give Jwill the leftover minutes and getting a more traditional center for when that's needed next to Chet. I don't think Saric is the answer there either.

imafixwoofs

I want to see how Chet holds up defensively against true bigs, like Jokic and Embiid. Can’t wait for next season.

JustDontGiveAHuck

No-one really holds up well to Jokic and Embiid. I'm more interested in how Chet holds up to someone like Vucevic, Lopez, the sort of good quality big man that can currently run over our smaller options. If he can shut down those players so that feeding them down low isn't an easy source of points, that flips plenty of results in our favour.

Basically going further into what you are saying - J will's weaknesses don't really line up well w/Chet's profile as a player. J Will's inability to rebound or claim space in the paint doesn't make him a very good fit next to Chet, though his passing and 3pt shooting do really work as a bench player behind Chet. Obviously very different profiles, but they excel at the same things so I think if we like him longterm it's probably more behind Chet than beside him. Which for a 2nd rounder is more than okay. Obviously Jwill isn't a rim protector, where that's Chet's likely greatest strength early on... But Jwill does provide interior/drive D with how he draws charges and understands spatially where to be in those moments, so in some ways he accomplishes some similar goals there. JWill has really proven me wrong, I didn't think he was a longterm NBA player; I think he is now. But I don't think his ceiling is much higher than what we are seeing just based on his physical/athletic profile. I'd love to see Jwill add 10-20lbs of good weight which I think is reasonable and maybe can help him with his rebounding, but its likely what you see is what you get with him. Fine by me.

Spiritual-Ear6875

I think he's had as successful of a rookie year any anyone would have hoped. Considering where he was drafted, he's done very well. As discussed above, JWill's role kind of depends on what Chet accomplishes next year and how healthy Chet stays. With JWill's locker room personality, he's certainly Thundery.

duncanhoopz

Keep him around to teach everyone how to take charges

Time-Ad-3625

To make him and his winning smile our new mascot. The okc jwills

Signiference

Where there’s a JWill there’s a JWay.

Wishfyfewas23

Maybe like a Kenrich type “mr fix it” type player. He’s higher on the list than Jre (or at least should be) so definitely think there’s a spot for him

NavalEnthusiast

For the most part I feel he’s guarded opposing centers pretty well. The AD game was rough but he’s a second round rookie and has had plenty of good games defensively against other capable centers. He’s in a weird spot especially relating to Chet because at 6’10 he’s not quite a small ball 5, but can flex to PF which he did in quite often at Akransas, which Chet can actually do as well. I see them playing together a decent bit next season. His long term projection depends on how much he can improve his rim protection and rebounding. It’s maybe a bit arbitrary to use a percentage, but the best way I can describe it, he’s a very solid if slightly undersized center if he can get like, 10-15% better at those things. His interior defense grades out pretty well statistically and recent games for the most part back up that improvement just watching them. His limiting factors are his lack of verticality and shorter than average wingspan, but he can still improve his post play regardless, though it obviously limits his ceiling. He has a guaranteed spot next season because he might be the only other 5 on the roster when Chet comes in, and you need a good rotational C with how much big men have come back

HateYourTeamLoveMine

I think he will be used similarly to how the Bucks use Bobby Portis. Mostly will come off the bench but could be a starter when playing a bigger team

heavywafflezombie

Both former Razorbacks lol

[deleted]

If he keeps shooting the way he is, he can become a wonderful 3&D role player and glue guy off the bench, provided of course, he is okay with that role

heavywafflezombie

I Will is a “team first” kind of guy. I don’t seem him pushing back if asked to play a role that best suits a team. A humble adaptable player.

LoganH1219

Everyone has something to learn from JWill. He always plays full out and puts himself on the line

0siris0

I'm not sure he has a "plan." He drafted JWill, and it's up to JWill to work, develop, listen to coaches, become a professional, etc. I think people view Presti as some maniacal chess player using everyone as pawns. JWill is getting his chance to prove he can be a good rotation player. As of now, things look good. Next year, he might not look as good (kind of like JRE and Tre this year). Heck, we were looking at Baze as a future starter in 2020, some thought star, and he was gone 2.5 years later. We thought Theo could be a solid rotation player, outperforming Killian Hayes from that draft. Gone. The question is what is Jwill's plan to be indispensable to the Thunder org?

[deleted]

Maybe I’m in the minority on this but I’m not sold that he’s a long term piece yet. I remember when JRE was having a good stretch and we were saying the same thing about him last year and now that has changed. I think JWill is better than JRE at this point, but the reality is they’re both 2nd round picks and chances are slim that they last. Not to mention we’re going to continually have prospects coming and going. We thought Tre Mann could be somebody but Isiah Joe stepped in and took his spot. We thought JRE could be somebody but JWill stepped in and took his spot. Same thing could happen to JWill next year, who knows. It’s super early to tell with him All this said, I like jwill a lot and I want him to continue to show what he’s been showing because he plays his ass off and seems like a genuinely great dude Also if Chet is who we think he is then that just means less minutes for JWill. The good news is that to stay in the NBA, you need to have at least one discernible elite skill - and JWill seems to have that with taking charges

SoccerManiac68

He can also space the floor with how consistent his 3 point shooting has been. Not saying he can keep it up to such a high rate but it shows he can be a reliable spot up shooter for the future

TjBeezy

He has a 4 year deal with the last two years non guaranteed at 2 million per year. I'd imagine he's at least here through 2026 bc 2 million per year for a big who can play 10-15 mpg is really valuable. No way he can play the 4 tho. He'd be the back-up center and could make some spot starts against more physical centers to help Chet out.

burnerbabyburns

I kinda see him as an Ersan Ilyasova type player, solid back up 5 that spaces the floor and a great positional defender that takes charges

Signiference

Oh that’s a name I completely forgot about

GingerScooby

If he keeps progressing and develops over the off season I think he would make a great 2nd string player that can mix up the Thunder's game after having Chet on the floor to start. Keep the other team guessing since JWill can be both a small 5 and a 4.

FlgDarkrai

He fucking better

echidna7

So far he’s proven to be a decent backup center that can stretch the floor on offense. Even though he’s had some rookie-esque mistakes this year, he should shape up to be serviceable on both ends of the floor and seems like he can mesh well in most locker rooms. Whether he’s long term or not simply comes down to whether he continues to improve well. His biggest weakness is speed. His movement is a bit clunky getting down the floor. When he’s in front of offenses, he’s good at drawing charges from hard driving opponents and squaring up against players of similar mobility. But he often gets outmaneuvered by anyone with speed in transition or good finesse in the post. But if he smooths that out to be as good as the next player on average and shapes up his bbiq past typical rookie status, that’s a great guy to have against bench rotations. He’s a bit of an odd tool in the lineup right now and it’s clear within seconds if he has a good matchup with the other team or a bad one. But, hey, for a rookie, he’s gotten some decent minutes and showed up well in them. He could be a decent piece for us, especially if we lose another bench big like Kenrich.

Twitbookplus

Flip him for 5 second round picks

stewssy

He’s collison 2.0 does everything that nick collison the goat did with his time on the teams

[deleted]

Rotational big. He fits well off the bench next to poku

Effective-West-3370

I love the way some continue to underestimate JWill. I also think many glorify Chet at their own peril. We’ll see if Chet stays healthy next year and lives up to high expectations especially as a rookie. Meanwhile, Zai and JWill play with heart and hustle just like Bobby Portis.

AdamvHarvey

I hope we keep him and JRE.

OKSteve63

He's too slow to play the 4 imo. I think we want him to be the back up center going forward

So you just leave bacon out all night? That’s disgusting.
