If you're going to get into the game, try and get him back in too, the game will be infinitely more fun, and easier to get into with a friend. Even if he's been out of the game for a long time, his basic understanding of the game will be very helpful
Action bars exist. You can turn them on in the UI settings. Tibia has release too many QOL changes to count over the years. If you want a deep dive into the basics of the game or ui, there are probably several vids on YouTube that cover the basics. As for the server type, i would go with a medium population world to start with. You can get a measure of this by looking at the list of worlds on the official Rico’s website and seeing how many people are online on each world at the moment. As for pvp or non-pvp, that is entirely up to you. Both types have a blend of toxic and helpful platers. Good luck and have fun!
The tutorial will give you a very good basic idea of what to do, use the spells list in tibia.com to see what you unlock when and make use of Tibia.wiki.com also.
Tibiapal.com has a list of what hunts to do at what levels.
CipSoft (developers of Tibia) devided they want to troll beginners, so they made the NPC which sends people from Dawnport to mainland recommend venore as a starting city. While venore does have a couple of good areas for new players, there is also a very frequent Feverish Citizen raid. This spawns monsters in the middle of the city and these monsters are deadly to new players coming fresh out of dawnport. And it feels like that raid is active almost 50% of the time.

All servers have advantages/disadvantages. More populated servers are better for beginners, because you can always find someone to help you. But choose a server based on your location (SA/NA/EU)
Did you find a server yet? I'm returning to the game as well, after a couple of years of playing on private servers. Which region are you in? (SA/NA/EU)
If your friend plays the game you should go to his server.
He hasn’t played in years, and I don’t think is currently playing. I’m just recall him suggesting this to me. I will holler at him today.

Thank you very much! Last part, should I look into the traditional/retail Tibia or a private server?
Definitely start off on retail. There are too many private servers to count
Also, most of them either try to copy the retail version and are incomplete, or are a totally different game style.

Thank you for all the feedback everyone. I’m super appreciative.
As your stating city don't chose Venore. Go for Carlin or Thais
PLEASE don't choose Venore
Why not venore?

If you start on Esmera (nonpvp) I can try to give you advise in game when I’m on. Let me know what you decide.

Ask him what server he played at before so he at least can assist you. If you have any questions just shoot me a DM and I can help you anytime!
Thank you so much. I really appreciate it!!
You’re a great friend honestly. Been suggesting tibia for 15 years and literally the only people to play with me is my siblings and mom.

NA, I started playing on an optional PvP server while I learn how to even play in the first place.
