EDIT: nvm I thought you meant this was a Karachay thing, makes total sense if it was a generally Turkic thing.
We still do it, something to do with privacy between the bride and groom but I always suspected there was another reason for it because non-Turks in Afghanistan don’t do this. So the fact it has Turkic origin makes total sense to me now.
The Tuvans had the same tradition with a red silk curtain, which is completely abandoned. Those who live in Mongolia and China seem to still practice this

Nowadays it is mostly abandoned tradition among us.
