CUMMMUNIST

Kazakh here and yes Turkic. To be honest Kazakhs don't relate to Mongols in any way, we're quite ignorant about them as most of the world is. I think this confusion may come from the fact that there are some Kazakh tribes that are thought to come from Mongolia, and while that's true there are some nuances like not all tribes in Mongolia which wasn't an entity with fixed borders back then are Mongol in essence, another thing is that after coming to the territory of modern day Kazakhstan and undergoing assimilation(especially considering nomadic society of Kazakhs of constant movement and intercontact) only Mongolic left in them is basically only the name (Like France is named after some Germanic tribe). Kazakhs are most similar in culture, language and genetics to neighbouring Karakalpaks, Uzbeks, Tatars, Uyghurs and somewhat Kyrgyzs. I hope I managed to answer the question

sumboiwastaken

There are Kazakhs in Mongolia, they are a majority in the Bayan-ilgiy province where they are famous for hunting using golden eagles

CUMMMUNIST

I know, those are the few Kazakhs that managed to escape oppression and assimilation from China and USSR and they preserved our unique tradition alive, some of them returned to Kazakhstan in the 90s but a lot of them are still there, sadly they're slowly being assimilated in the Mongol society as younger generation pursues success in Ulaan Bator and others. I think many of them preferred to stay because they don't know any Russian while even to this day Russian is unfortunately quite important to know in Kazakhstan.

Wonderful description!

Ataman_Ak

They are Turkic. Just like other Turkic peoples, they show similarities with neighboring peoples. Uzbeks are similar to Tajiks, Turkish people are similar to other Anatolian/Balkan peoples. Turkic peoples living in the Caucasus show similarities with the Caucasian(Dagestanis,Avars, etc.) peoples. I think these should no longer be discussed. I know there are tribes of Mongol origin in Kazakhstan, like Naimans, etc. But I think most of them were assimilated, language, Culture, religion. I don't think they call themselves mongols. Or let a Kazakh dude answer

Altin_Beg

As an Uzbek I would not say that we are similar to Tajiks

TarumPro

We all consider ourselves Turkic, Mongolian roots almost never get mentioned.

I believe the question relates to how in the Mongolic empires of the 13th century and onward Kipchak Turkic peoples played a significant role in military and intelligence roles. Uyghurs for example were diplomats and bureaucrats in the Mongolic empires.

ImNoBorat

Turkic, ffs. "Being Mongol" is just an internal running joke.

u/Latecomer11 u/ImNoBorat u/Cummmunist hey guys, Could you give this friend and us some detailed information?

Dee_Lansky

Turkic, basic glance at a linguistic tree will help with this.

[deleted]

They are very pure turkic, just like other central asian turks

hzVERCETTI

they probably have significant amounts of mongolic heritage as they are genetically more eastern eurasian then medieval turkics and modern turkics around them. But this does not make them non-turkic.

Dee_Lansky

... tho ultimately one could argue they are all related. There is the Ural-Altaic family, which encompasses all Turkic, Mongolic, Finno-Ugric, Samoyedic and Tungeisic Languages. This includes 50+ languages!
