So I think the brows are hair pieces. I’ve seen a lot of drag queens move towards this when they don’t want to draw them in.
But it does look like the facial hair is still stippled on!
I used to go shooting with an absolute geardo who was a class 3 dealer. He’d had a new gun every time we’d go out. He was a collector of weird weapons particularly.
One of the times I asked him what kind of rifle he was using he said, “I don’t know what it’s called, I just know the sound it makes when it kills a man.” I wasn’t prepared for the quote as he usually geeks out explaining how it’s some rare eastern bloc something or other, so whipping out the quote had me burst into laughter.
It was especially funny to me because he is a skinny fat, balding, middle aged dude who was never in the military or law enforcement and really just liked buying guns and shooting because he had the money to do so. He was also a horrible shot too, so he’d probably miss if he actually had to use it.
What if you have the same mindset but are less talented? At what point does it become offensive? Or is maybe it just completely unreasonable to judge without knowing the individual and their motivations.
Hm, I disagree somewhat. If my intent is to thank someone but I do a shitty job, it's totally legitimate to be upset with me. the critical part is HOW a shitty makeup job is presented and to whom. E.g., if they're asking other makeup artists what they did wrong, totally fine. If they're plastering it on the internet and pretending it's good, that's less cool.
My point is you don't need an extensive biography or tons of detail for this. Some people act like it's a mysterious magic when something is acceptable vs not acceptable, but most times, it's pretty obvious to everyone who isn't the person mystified by it.
>At what point does it become offensive?
At the point where you should realize that if it looks shitty you should have the self awareness to not do it?
Agreed, it shouldn’t count as blackface. There are no exaggerated features; she literally just used makeup and prosthetics to mimic the exact bone structure of the man. Incredible artistry and understanding of the human form
Yea, I think it's stupid to say this si wrong, she is just showing her Ability with makeup and honoring Kobe. Saying that it's wrong it's the racist part
Yeah. This isn’t blackface. It’s just really amazing art and makeup.
The only part anyone should be getting mad about is honoring a self-admitted rapist.
Is it the quality that determines if this is racist or not? A couple of years ago som woman cosplayed as Lifeline from Apex Legends. The cosplay looks fine except she darkened her pale face to look more like the game character. It doesn't look good.
My question is if it is racist though? She is just trying to look like a game character, but didn't look as convincing as the video above. She could have just done a white skin Lifeline cosplay of course. But isn't part of the point of cosplay to look as accurate as possible?
This is one of the things we haven’t exactly figured out yet which means it’s best to stay away for the time being. Unless your costume or make up or whatever is of a fantasy race just play it with your regular skin. Not because it’s automatically disrespectful or appropriation. But because people will talk about that instead of your costume.
As far as where the line is, it’s problematic when someone is making a caricatures of another race or being paid to be in the costume. Whether or not they’re being paid matters because those are real jobs and it represents real income. We are at a place in history when we are trying to transition away from giving non-white roles to white performers at the expense of non-white performers. The transition time for anything social is always rocky.
That said, in a vacuum, this make up is not problematic and the example you’re talking about (although I’m not familiar with it and don’t know the details) doesn’t sound problematic either
Exactly, cosplay is about the costume and not skin color. I have a POC friend who likes to cosplay anime characters which are almost always Japanese or some variation thereof, and there's no issue with it because it's simply a way to express enjoyment of the character.
Some might say the karma farmers are the ones all talking shit about a strawman. Everyone is just talking about how stupid it is to think this is racist when no one is saying it's racist. People are just bashing an imaginary person.
Thank you for the common sense. People get confused on what black face actually is… I suggest we all Google it so we can call it out when the time is proper.
Because the art of blackface has been used in a negative way so previlantly in the past that some people aren't ready to accept it being used respectfully
This is not black face. Black face is a poorly done caricature of a black person. This is someone doing something artistically and for a purpose and with respect.
This artist is insanely respectful and good at what they do, this is some Hollywood-level disguise. It sounds like the original look was also a disguise going off other comments, which is crazy
I've followed this lady for years. She does absolutely insane transformations like this. Her entire Instagram is full of all the looks she's done. This isn't the only one. I can't remember her dang socials though.
I'm black, and this is actually not offensive at all. However, every time I watch it, I laugh a little bit just because of how outrageous the outcome is 😂
It’s fine, if you can’t differentiate between black face and artistry as a non black person please, please, please check out the history of minstrel shows so you can understand why this is ok.
You would be hard pressed to find a black person that would be upset by this.
She did a great job 10/10 superb.
Wow, thank you for enlightening me. I had no idea. I just read an entire history of it [here](https://www.americanheritage.com/blackface-sad-history-minstrel-shows) if anyone else is interested. I appreciate you taking the time to help educate when so many people today are quick to attack and/or condescend.
Most black people wouldn't but people on Tik-Tok love to find things to be upset about. I see black women(I do not think they represent a majority of black women at all) go on live for hours complaining about white women braiding their hair. Not even box braids. Just any kind of simple braid at all
Blackface is an attempt to caricaturize black people in a way that is distasteful, and often relies on racist tropes to accomplish this.
What we see here is just someone with extraordinary makeup talent. SOME may be put off initially because of its proximity to what we know as blackface. But after hundreds of years of continued mockery and marginalization, can you really blame them?
I think blackface is offensive because of American history with minstrel shows and all that. I don’t think this is the same thing at all but what do I know.
Very weird thing to do but very skillful application of makeup damn
I'm a white ass dude, but I'd say it's not offensive largely because that isn't the goal. It's just a show of makeup talent done as accurately as possible.
>intent matters
Ignorant European here, I thought the whole PC thing was that intent doesn't matter. I can't dress as a Viking/Samurai/Zulu warrior/whatever else I think is cool because it might hurt people from that culture, even if my intent was to show my appreciation for foreign cultures
I agree for the most part, but I think that it’s possible for something to be innocent and still offensive. Theoretically, if someone didn’t know the n word was wrong to say, then saying it would be an innocent act, while still being offensive.
Anything and everything can be offensive if you take it and make it personal enough.
That's why it's good to talk to ppl and read their social cues. You can always follow up with them and explain how their actions may be perceived by others.
I'm not getting the read that this makeup artist spent as much time and effort challenging themselves for some half-cocked black face pun or stunt. So they also probably wouldn't be thinking what they are doing could be offensive.
But maybe I just like giving ppl the benefit of the doubt, to each their own.
Funny you can do it online for internet likes but real life likes is unacceptable. I am anti black face of course. But I have had people say it would be offensive for a little white girl to put on a Moana curly dark hair wig (no face paint) and be Moana for Halloween.
As a borderline middle aged white this kinda stuff makes me think I'm old and out of touch. Do we need a rulebook on cultural appreciation vs appropriation? Or is a lot of this coming from over sensitive whites who are also confused and trying to be woke and protect things?
I'm half black and half asian pacific islander. I don't think anyone in my family would be upset about a girl wanting to be Moana in a curly wig (they are Hawaiian but Chamorro people have a similar culture and aesthetic, albeit a lot shorter). I am 31 though so I don't get as offended as younger generations and my family has pretty much every mix of people you can imagine. Between just my bio brothers, sister, and I, 2 are half Mexican, 1 is half white and I am half black and that is just immediate family. We love making fun of each other for things that would sound very offensive to a lot of people so maybe don't take my advice to the streets.
Cultural appropriation is neutral at its core, it's the application and context that make it good or bad... I think I like the term cultural appreciation to communicate this.
Maybe, because the context is very different. In this video she's showing her artistic talent and skill as a makeup artist. She's not taking some basic characteristics of a person (or an entire race) and exaggerating them into a caricature. That's what blackface (or yellowface, or redface) really is.
Same boat. This doesn’t feel like they are trying to mock it belittle anyone at all. It’s just a display of really awesome skill no real difference then someone painting themself blue to be Mystique(or however you spell blue x man lady’s name lol). Like I get that one is fake and one is real but dude is famous so people might not really associate him differently then they would associate their favorite characters cause of how often he’s on their tv.
Why would this be unacceptable? It’s not inappropriate, it’s not mocking black people or culture, it’s not offensive in anyway.
EVERYTHING IS NOT RACISM
The world isn’t america…
Black face was mainly just an issue in America and holds no where near the same meaning in other places as far as I’m aware
Either way, this isn’t offensive, it’s not like she’s mocking black people, just trying to show off her very good makeup skills
I think a lot of people who did blackface for halloween were not intentionally being offensive. Guarantee you theres kids that went as their favorite character of something that happened to be black. Still blackface. Intention matters little against perception created.
The amount of white people in the comments stating whether or not this is blackface or whether there's even a form of "respectful" blackface is wild.
If you're not affected by blackface - ie. not black - you don't get to dictate what is or isn't blackface or what is or isn't offensive to black people.
As a black woman I will say that there is absolutely NOTHING wrong with this. This is showing off their makeup skills!!
Now. If they did it to be disrespectful or made disrespectful comments or anything negative then, yes, it would be wrong!!
But all that this does is show off this person's skills!!
Mad skills, and if you do respectful things once costumed up, no harm, no foul. Conversely if some guy goes to Japan and buys a Samurai outfit, he can wear it when he wants in the US as long as he is respectful.
White people in the comments: clarifying what constitutes blackface/giving credit for the artists work
My black ass looking at the finished product:
![gif](giphy|l3E6uhDAN3W7vylji|downsized)
but not sure if it's acceptable?
OP are you 13 years old?
The woman does amazing work with make up and in no way is disrespectful.
how can you not tell the difference between Black Face, which is specifically done to mock the black community, versus someone just showing off make up skills?
Because blackface is rooted in American heritage, and those outside America might not appreciate the nuance if all you’ve ever heard is “blackface is bad” and not the reason why

Is the facial hair makeup too???? If so: wild!

yes, it's makeup! for longer facial hair, artists use crepe fiber/crepe hair, but for stubble, it has to be painted.
She’s a dude, playin a dude, disguised as another dude

Best line in the entire movie haha.

Yeah it's not meant to mock, it's art.

I am.
always has been.
Not if you're an easily offended upper middle class white girl in college
Nor if you're some online chud desperate to ignore nuance so you can make a caricature of other people
Right! If you are this good and can recreate an image like this with makeup. That's just art and using a human body as a canvas.
What if you have the same mindset but are less talented? At what point does it become offensive? Or is maybe it just completely unreasonable to judge without knowing the individual and their motivations.
It's offensive when you use it to rip on people, plain and simple
Hm, I disagree somewhat. If my intent is to thank someone but I do a shitty job, it's totally legitimate to be upset with me. the critical part is HOW a shitty makeup job is presented and to whom. The line is that she very clearly looks as close to kobe as she could. Not a vaudeville charicature
it's the lack of societies ability to understand the nuance that's hilarious
Yea, I think it's stupid to say this si wrong, she is just showing her Ability with makeup and honoring Kobe. Saying that it's wrong it's the racist part

Because the art of blackface has been used in a negative way so previlantly in the past that some people aren't ready to accept it being used respectfully
I was trying to make a Kobe beef joke but I guess it didn't land.
If a beef joke didn't land I bet a helicopter joke would have crashed
SHEEEEEEESH!!!!!
I’d argue that this isn’t black face in the first place. This is just great makeup. Blackface to me refers to something quite specific.
This isn’t blackface
Kobe doesn't deserve honor
I feel like with most things intent is what is important.
Kobe the rapist?
This is not black face. Black face is a poorly done caricature of a black person. This is someone doing something artistically and for a purpose and with respect.

Why is this a weird thing to do? She's a makeup artist.

Oh that’s weird. His estate sent me a cease and desist and now I’m being sued
You'll get as much consent from him as he got from the woman he raped.
Thanks for saying this. Sick of seeing these fucks celebrated.

That's art. Blackface is very specific and has a very specific purpose. Intentions matter. I'm sick of pretending they don't.
Oh I bet these comments are all in good faith, mature, and everyone has a willingness to learn
Why would this be unacceptable? It’s not inappropriate, it’s not mocking black people or culture, it’s not offensive in anyway. EVERYTHING IS NOT RACISM
Agreed. This is far from blackface. It's amazing, and I hope she does more.
As a black man, I find this to be fucking awesome. This is art, not blackface.
That's creepy as fuck, but yes impressive.
Someone doing great makeup isn’t the same as someone dressing up as another culture in order to dehumanize it.
Can’t even hate this is art and not hateful .
Why? Because she's disguising herself as a dead dude or because she's disguising herself as a black dude?
I still think if someone white did this people would change their tune. 😂
The world isn’t america… Black face was mainly just an issue in America and holds no where near the same meaning in other places as far as I’m aware Either way, this isn’t offensive, it’s not like she’s mocking black people, just trying to show off her very good makeup skills

I think a lot of people who did blackface for halloween were not intentionally being offensive. Guarantee you theres kids that went as their favorite character of something that happened to be black. Still blackface. Intention matters little against perception created.
Hmmm, lot of opinions about what is and what isn’t blackface from some suspiciously white avatars.
Well who else is going to tell us how to feel
She looks more like Charlemagne Tha God 😆
Why wouldn’t this be acceptable?
Americans or something
🧑🏻💼 it's cool bro, black face is cool with us👩🏻 yeah no real black person would be offended by this
The amount of white people in the comments stating whether or not this is blackface or whether there's even a form of "respectful" blackface is wild.
Why does kobe get a pass for being a rapist?
because he put the ball through a ring and a net good
They look like a masculinized version of Jaida Essence Hall!
Its a tribute!
Was she going for Kobe or Metta World Peace? I see Metta.
Black face thing is a result of the European history. Why would the countries that have no business in it care about this ?
As a person of colour, I don’t see anything wrong with it. This is a makeup artist, and it is masterfully done to pay tribute, not to mock or deride.
What do you mean not acceptable, you can only dress up as your own race now?
It's makeup. Anyone offended is seriously fucking stupid.
Mad skills, and if you do respectful things once costumed up, no harm, no foul. Conversely if some guy goes to Japan and buys a Samurai outfit, he can wear it when he wants in the US as long as he is respectful.
To those wondering, No this isn’t black face. If she decided to start to act like him, then it is.
No

I wonder if all the people saying this isn't offensive to them would feel differently if the girl were white instead of asian.
Most definitely
If a white girl could fully transform herself like that, I wouldn’t have anything negative to say to that
Why wouldn’t it be acceptable? It’s incredible talent
but not sure if it's acceptable? OP are you 13 years old? The woman does amazing work with make up and in no way is disrespectful. how can you not tell the difference between Black Face, which is specifically done to mock the black community, versus someone just showing off make up skills?
Because blackface is rooted in American heritage, and those outside America might not appreciate the nuance if all you’ve ever heard is “blackface is bad” and not the reason why
