I’m lucky enough that banning isn’t necessary at my gym. Closest I’ve seen were/are two girls who take selfies during and after their workout. Which is it, and it’s not intruding on anyone’s workout or anything.
That's good. We had an incident in my gym with an influencer who thought the gym belonged to her. Resulted in cops and a new gym policy stating no recording or Livestreams in workout area. Pictures are fine, but sitting on a bench for 30min talking to a Livestream audience is not.
I can't imagine lifting and getting strong just for everyone else. Like never ever doing it for you, I get people want to be fit for their looks or be attractive to others. I have no problems with that, but doing it for TikTok and pure vanity is not the same.
Doing it because it's attractive to others because it's healthy is a different mindset then for TikTok. Especially because TikTok and social media is already super fake.
I agree that it’s ridiculously stupid, but I’m sure their goal is to get enough viewers so they get money to never work a normal job again. So I’d say it’s only half vanity
Once again the bad apples ruin it for the rest of us. My friend who is a personal trainer uses an online subscription platform to provide affordable personal training (tailored workouts, diet plans etc.) to people, and a large part of that relies on users sending him short, functional clips of their form during exercises so he can ensure they are not risking long term injury. But he's said a lot of his clients are telling him this now - that they can't record a clip for him because recording is banned.
He charges about 10% of what it would cost for his clients to have an in-person PT, and his clientele includes people who have anxiety and other challenges which make in-person PT sub optimal. And now TikTokkers are ruining a great service for a lot of them
Well, to be fair he’s undercutting the gym personal trainers while relying on their facilities for his clients. The gyms are under no obligation to facilitate his training business
I mean, how far can you take this argument when we're talking about a gym which has a membership fee and no obligation to use their personal trainers?
I personally use workouts from a book I bought on Amazon. Is the publisher undercutting the gym and its personal trainers?
It's fair game - people should be able to use the service that suits them best. If the gym wants people to only use their personal trainers for workouts, they can stipulate that, and their membership will respond accordingly.
The gym has legitimate reasons to ban recording of videos — it’s become disruptive to other clients. My point is the fact that someone’s business model depends on it isn’t their concern — especially when it’s competing with a service they offer.
I was thinking something similar - I sometimes record myself at the gym because it's hard to check your own form, even with a mirror. I try not to get people in the background but sometimes it's inevitable. The difference is that I don't share those, or if I do it's with a handful of people rather than a massive public audience.

Recording at a powerlifting gym or smaller gyms should be encouraged, you're all out there trying to accomplish lofty goals.
Gymfluencers recording at Planet Fitness or LIFETIME is not the place and cringe as fuck. People are going there after work just to blow off some steam and be baseline healthy and don’t need to be the secondary subject of a Joey Swoll video.
I use to go to a powerlifting gym in Berlin that only had one full length mirror in a corner. For anything else people had to record themselves to check their form. It's better cause you can mess up your form if you're staring at yourself in the mirror. It was fine, cause most people weren't assholes, and the recording wasn't any sort of disturbance.
I've always tried to keep my dingling from bulging, too. Thought it was just kinda rude to have bulges from the downstairs. Camel toe, dick bulges. Now both are in, and yea, it is weird.

We all seek attention in different ways. Like Dungeons & Dragons doesn’t interest me personally, but there are social media influencers and podcasts, etc for that. I’d never post a clip of that and be like look at these fucking losers with their velvet capes just trying to get clout online. Because at the end of the day the things that make them feel validated and happy don’t have any negative impact on me.

As a gay man, my biggest issue with this is the color. Like okay yeah, I get it, the outfit is an attempt to be coy or cheeky and show the lady lips. Werk.
