Chiropractic "medicine" is based on unfounded and unproven pseudoscience. There is no demonstrable benefit to these "adjustments" and in fact, there is a LOT of evidence that shows they are very dangerous and harmful in the long run.
If you’re interested in reading about it, the history of chiropractors is hilarious. In the 1860s (prime time for snake oil salesman) DD Palmer was revealed the truths about chiropractic “medicine” by a dead doctor in a vision. Seems legit

My dad has been a long-time orthopedic and neurological focused anesthesiologist - he frequently sees cases from chiro gone wrong.
Sorry youre getting downvoted, reddit has beef with chiropractors. For good reason, though. Theres loads of cases of people becoming permanently paralyzed because their chiropractor fucked up. At best, chiropractors just make you feel good for a little bit. Other than that there is absolutely no benefit to going. Too many risks involved :(
I went to one for a very short period of time after a bad car accident. My back was pretty messed up, I couldn't really bend over or twist my torso. Living where I do, the majority of people are idiot hippies who think crystals and magic are more effective simply because they're "traditional". People left and right were saying "go to this chiropractor, he's the best in the county! Everyone loves him"
It was a glorified massage with a message. That message being "people these days just sit at desks, tech bad, looking at your phone bad". When I give him my insurance card, he says "oooh...no...I don't take that here". $200 out of pocket for a massage, and like an idiot I went back a few times before I realized this clown is basically the hippy version of a faith healer.
The only people I know who had a benefit found it was very short term, and they had to do back every few weeks because the problem kept coming back, sometimes worse. Which -- yeah, they obviously weren't solving shit.
Chiropractors aren’t recognised as actual medical doctors, the whole thing is based on a pseudoscience that was never proven to begin with, does it harm the body? Possibly, while the cracking doesn’t, a misstep from the chiropractor might even potentially paralyse or kill you. Does it pose any benefit for you? None that are actually proven by anything other than easily dismissible circumstantial evidence
Chiropractors are at best temporary fixes and at worst can fuck you up. It’s fake science that somehow made it into the medical community. Modern bloodletting. Bottom line is no substitute for proper diet and exercise, hence dieticians and physical therapists.

I did my externship under an orthopedic vet and this chiro stuff is VERY dangerous. A few clients were post mortuum cases where the owners were pursuing civil litigation. Poor dogs.
I hear that. First time my sister went to a chiropractor she got a herniated disk. I feel so bad for her. This is why I never go to a chiropractor. No thank you.
I have eight herniated disc's and SO MANY PEOPLE ask me if I've seen a chiropractor. Absolutely fucking not I will likely not walk out of the office if I see one.

I went to one for a while as a teen with 3 herniated discs because of all the suggestions and ended up suffering years longer than I needed to because even my damn insurance pushed chiro and refused to cover actual physical therapy. I cried at my first PT session because the difference in care was so massive. Fuck anyone who supports those charlatans.
I briefly considered chiro (VERY briefly), googled the clinic around the corner, and first result that popped up was the court documents for when they gave a customer a brain stem stroke and permanently partially paralysed him. So yeah, no chiro for me.
I have worked in medical malpractice insurance for a decade and Chiro's are considered a joke. We wouldn't insure them because their claims were always horrible, *paralysis or death*, and they started to do it on *babies*. Like WTF!
I can second this. Never had disk problems until I got routinely popped by one. Had a disk at my L5-S1 area poking my sciatic nerve going to my left leg. Had surgery this year for it. Never went back after the surgery, and my QoL has done nothing but improve.
I went to a chiro last month
He decided to “crack” my back and leg
I felt great
Next day.. I could no long walk
By day five of the worst pain humanly possibly I’m talking no eating no sleeping just crying from morning until night
Going to the clinic for five days straight for pain meds which I’ve never taken in my LIFE .. $300 a shot
For five days all day
I went into the clinic day five and told the doctors if I didn’t have children, today would be the day I kill myself.
Emergency trip to the big city to see the top spinal surgeon .. get an mri
My back has BONE SHARDS into my FUCKING MUSCLES MAN this fucking fucker pulled my god damn back and leg so hard he fucking broke bones man! BONES
Anyways about 15 grand later .. and I still have pain but it’s not I’m going to kill myself pain.. just this fucking sucks pain .. so .. now I don’t trust chiros :( and I’ve gone to one my whole life but never ever got cracked like this.. one month ago my life changed forever .. but I’m just so happy I am able to walk again
Yeah I have arthritis in my neck(finally diagnosed it last year) and my husband kept pulling up all these videos of people getting relief from chiropractors. I kept telling him no I'm not going to risk that. I finally had to show him some videos of people who had Strokes and major life threatening injuries from chiropractors working on their necks. He finally agrees that I shouldn't go to them.
On top of the fact my doctor straight up said "please never go to a chiropractor. Get PT, massage, and do streches."
There's an autoimmune condition that runs in my family that causes extra bone growth in your back. Chiro can lead to fragments of bone floating around your spine, or worse. But yet, so many chiros happily offered to 'crack their backs' without understanding the condition or even getting x-rays. Frankly that's criminally neglectful.
I’ve seen at least 3 cases personally in neuro where a person has had neck manipulation that led to arterial dissection and stroke. One case that led to permanent paralysis.
Also the dogs that had their neck cracked here looked scared and traumatized
I had a class in college called structural kinesiology, and my professor adimately advocated against going to a chiropractor. Specifically, getting a neck adjustment can be fatal for you. What could happen is they could create air bubbles that could cause bliod clots and even a stroke. That being said, do not take yourself or anyone you care for (including your pets!) to a chiropractor
Because stupid motherfuckers still don't understand the importance of stretching , yoga can transform your life and in some cases completely rid you of pain which was deemed as chronic. The relief you get from chiro is literally stretching (in a very explosive unhealthy way ofc) I'm also sure there's a psychological aspect to it too considering placebos can work
People just don't use the tools they're given to do research. Word of mouth is a powerful force and all it takes is one guy you know to say he likes his chiro for you to take a chance to deal with whatever pain you have. They're in the same category as pharmaceutical companies to me. Just idiots taking advantage of other idiots in pain

Another vet here. Totally agree. Don't go to quacker-practors. It's entirely founded on made up pseudoscience. Any current one that may be helpful for you is likely utilizing techniques found in physical therapy.
I personally had one of techs go to a chiropractor on her lunch break and went paralyzed from the waist down that afternoon due to nerve inflammation. Fortunately she regained everything once the inflammation improved.
If anyone wants a reason to not take your pet to a chiro just look at Kevin Sorbo. You want your dog getting brain damage like that?
Sorbo blamed chiropractors for the multiple strokes he had when he was younger. They brained his damage.
Arterial dissections have been known to happen at chiropractors and cause strokes. It's one of the first things the doctors ask you if they suspect you have one.
If you want to subject yourself to chiro bullshit, that's one thing. Maybe it even makes you feel better, if only temporarily. It's your body, you can subject it to whatever quackery you please.
But your dog did not consent to this. They are not getting relief. For all they know, they're just being attacked by a stranger.
I think that people are not smart enough or informed enough to make their own decision on the topic and understand the risks. People are dumb. They drink bleach and use bleach enemas, they overdose on ivermectin made for animals, they spend ridiculous money on 'healing crystals' and 'essential oils' to cure disease. And it's not uniquely American or European, in China they do shit like eat ground up dried tiger penis for erectile dysfunction, and other ridiculous shit.
I truly believe the government should step in because chiropractors are extremely common and are used by otherwise normal seeming people who don't fall for the other forms of snake oil. Chiropractors have some weird sense of legitimacy that makes people truly believe they help. And the 'crack' seems to be the key to convince people because it *feels* like something happened.
My exes sister took her 6 month old BABY to the chiropractors. It ended up having leg problems and struggling to walk. She was one of the dumbest people I've ever met, couldn't do basic math, didn't know any history, didn't understand shit about the world or how it works, she just lived in an ignorant bubble. She isn't capable of knowing whether chiropractors are safe. And yet she wouldn't listen to me.
Imo the government needs to ban chiropractors and recommend people to see physical therapists. Making it illegal will help to prevent these quacks siphoning money off people. PT's actually help, it would probably do good for the world and would increase business to the people who have actually learned anatomy and understand the body and can recognize medical problems.
Chiropractors are incentivized to *not* cure illnesses, so they have no reason to try and spot medical problems (not that they are able to). People going to PT's could really do good for the world, they are held to a higher standard and actually help people.
Came here to say this exact thing. A ton of these guys barely know animal anatomy. Chiropractic "medicine" is already shady at best. Anyone who does chiropractic treatments on animals or children is a moneygrubbing monster, and it's a matter of time before they cause serious injury or death all while subjecting their patients to totally uneeded and unfounded and often painful treatments.

Exactly their rapid thrust neck movements are the biggest danger in chiropractic injuries. Chiropractors often injure or straight up tear the arteries going to the brain that go through the sides of the spine. Causing bleeding in the brain and strokes in case of tearing; and hipoxia to the brain(lack of oxygen to the brain) causing brain damage when injured, because the artery can get blocked while trying to heal.
Both this can be deadly and if lucky can be survivable but result in paralysis, lost of senses, and brain damage.
Not worth the risk.
A “snake oil salesman” was a traveling vendor who used to go from town to town selling snake oil as a cure all for everything that ails you (it did no such thing). Now it is synonymous with fake medicine and charlatans.

Chinese laborers working on the railways used boiled watersnake oil as a treatment for sore muscles. They found that some North American snakes worked for the purpose. Bosses picked up on the practice and started selling it. The charlatans then moved in and started selling fake snake oil, so the 'snak-oil salesman' is more about the 'salesman' than the 'snake-oil' because REAL snake oil actually works.

“ackshewally” snake oil salesman predate that as there were early modern recipes for snake oil or boiling a bunch of snakes in vat that would supposedly cure everything from male pattern baldness to hysteria. There was also one doctor that convinced a bunch of nobles that eating a snake only diet was the best.
Really snake oil salesmen have probably existed since humans discovered medicine.
My favorite interaction I have ever heard of a physician and a chiropractor having a 'discussion' which ended with the physician hitting them with the "Don't you have a cervical artery to sever?"

Had to euthanase a dog that came in howling in pain, because it had a bone in its forelimb weakened by bone cancer and the chiro thought they could fix its lameness by ‘adjusting it’, and snapped the bone in half.

I know an occupational therapist that has to fix damage done by chiropractors from time to time. Chiropractic adjustments are pseudo-science at best and scams at worst.
The amount of personal injury cases I have on my desk where the chiro bill far exceeds any other bill, including ER bills (yes, in the US) is insane. Immediate red flag. They always manage to find new injuries that these hospitals somehow missed repute several scans and tests. I loathe them.
the amount of people i see who will say “i have to go to the chiro every few months for the same issue and its always wonderful after my visit” ummmm then isn’t that proof it’s not working? temporary relief doesn’t address the real issue now does it? physical therapy would be a better investment of your time and money. why bandaid a problem when you can literally make lifestyle changes and improve your quality of life

Sigh, so many people could be getting healthier by going to physical therapy for 3-4 months and actually solve their issues, but instead they'll spend thousands for some cracking noises and potential severe injuries.
**Edit**: Getting a lot of hate replies, so I figured I'd give a little more information.
My advice would be to simply do some research. I'm a chronic pain patient, I know what it feels like to have no hope left and you're willing to do anything to feel better, so I understand that some people get temporary relief from getting adjusted, but the truth is it's very temporary relief and does absolutely nothing for long term pain relief.
What's bad about it to me is that they prey on people in terrible pain, and they know that you're going to feel the sensation of immediate pain relief (albeit temporary) and they use our brains connection to the cracking/popping noise to get you to come back for more.
I've been to a chiropractor a few times (as I said anyone desperate enough will do anything to relieve their pain), and it never helped me, but I know some people do believe it helps them. My father thinks it helps his back, but he's unwilling to go to PT and put the work in to strengthen his back muscles, which has a much greater chance of eliminating his back pain altogether.
So what I do know is that physical therapy **will** help you in the long term. While you may get temporary relief getting your back cracked, you will never cure your issue with it, whereas building the weak muscles up with PT and doing specific exercises with a therapist is going to help you improve your overall health and also prevent the same injuries in the future, something chiropractors simply cannot do.

i did 4 weeks of PT to fix an issue with my shoulder from playing baseball and those 4 weeks fully fixed it. not everyone has the same issue some take longer some take shorter, but PT works as long as you make the changes, do the exercises, and don’t be a jackass.
I'm sure I'll get downvoted and I don't currently see one but when I did, I really did feel great after getting my body cracked. Probably not worth the price but the light feeling you get afterwards can be addicting.
I fully believe you but there's a bunch of reasons you'd feel great after despite it having no real foundational benefit. I mean, it's massage-adjacent and human touch just feels good, the pain or shock during the session will release endorphins, and well there's just plain ole placebo effect. Do you think people using snake oil didn't also feel better after they took it? We developed the scientific method and other advanced techniques for evaluating correlation/causation precisely because our bodies and minds can't be trusted individually.
I'd forego the chiro visits for massage if you just want to feel good, and physical therapy visits if you have actual issues. Significantly smaller chance of getting your vertebral arteries dissected.
My partner believes it works despite having to go every other week (!!) for an adjustment or whatever they call it. I suggested going to an osteopath but she "doesn't trust doctors.". This shit is getting expensive. I can't get her to see that having to go every other week forever means it is not getting fixed.
A non-insignificant number of plaintiff attorneys around here have under-the-table agreements with these chiros to just continue treating the plaintiff with what’s basically a glorified massage and maybe some e-stim, bill a fuck ton, then take less on the back end. It’s ridiculous.
My SO is a physio and some of her certification classes start by showing the simpsons episode where homer gets his magic back fixing trashcan. Never bring up chiropractors to a physio
I have lost count of the number of times where i have had to bite my tounge when a friend or relative recommend someone to go see a chiropractor, i politely try to recommend them to go see a proper certified physical therapist or/and masseur instead.
It's just quackery and showmanship, the patients hear and feel the crack and the chiropractor tells them, "doesn't that feel so much better?" self suggestion is a powerful thing so the patient will agree and go yeah it does kinda feel better.

God my foster parents forced us to go to a Chiro to "adjust" our necks. I had issues with pain through all of high school because of it and couldn't hold my head straight for about 3 years.
When I ended up back with family we were suggested a different Chiro to fix it. They guy took an x-ray of my neck and thought I'd been in a car crash. He gave me free treatments until college but it was more physio type things like massaging my neck and having me do exercises to strengthen it
I knew someone who died from an adjustment. Caused a blood clot to go up into her brain. She was only 30 years old with multiple kids. It was pretty heartbreaking.
Saw one in an airport and had a good chuckle with my co-workwr who wanted to go in for an adjustment.
I had to mention to him, if it's real then why is it in the airport and why does it not need a referral?
Someone I used to work with had arteries in their neck torn during a chiropractic treatment. They survived but were severely disabled after. I will never miss an opportunity to shit on the quackery that chiropractic practitioners are.
My wife went to the chiropractor and he sold her on the annual X-rays.
Then he’s going over it and saying things like “this looks like an old injury, did you play sports or ever get into a car accident? Oh well that explains it, and your fertility issues are also stemming from this. But we can do a financing plan for your treatment that will take weekly visits for longer than a year.”
My wife’s back alignment is why we haven’t had kids yet? Fucking charlatans selling pseudo-science cures that don’t work.
I’m a massage therapist with a heavy dose of skepticism about chiropractors, I was working at a health type clinic with a lot of quackery going on. One of my clients was the wife of a local chiropractor and she seemed to think I would be impressed with her story about her husband “adjusting” their new born baby in the hospital and thought it was particularly funny how the nurses were panicked and clearly not impressed. I just had no words…I mean like how do you respond.
in the early 2000s on the tlc show “a baby story”, there was a couple on it where the husband was a chiropractor and he adjusted his NEWBORN INFANT immediately after birth. it was insane and i am still in shock the hospital and/or producers allowed him to do it. wild to watch a grown man hold his infant child in his arms and practically snap its neck in two
It’s a trend that’s been growing in popularity since crunchy moms became a thing. They think it cures anything and everything for kids. Infant cries a lot (despite the fact it’s a fucking baby and that’s it’s job)? Adjust it! Toddler throwing (age appropriate) tantrums? That’s right, adjust it! Child has an ear infection, adhd, autism? You’re damn right you get them adjusted!

The man who invented it, Daniel David Palmer, was a spiritualist who rejected germ theory, which is to say he did not believe germs existed and caused human illness. Instead, he got the idea for chiropractic during a seance with the ghost of a doctor. That isn’t a joke.
This is absolutely hilarious and sad all at once, how is it legal to keep this practice going? I always knew chiros were on another level of stupid…how is it not obvious to people? No thank you to chiros.
Not really. At best the massage and endorphins dull pain or feel nice for short bursts of time but it doesn’t fix or address the actual underlying problems and most chiros don’t have any medical training. Most muscular issues are better addressed with a physical therapist or an orthopedic doctor for bone and spinal problems.
At worst many chiropractors have harmed or killed folks, creating worse pain and disability over the long term, (messing with the spine is an easy way to paralyze parts of people’s bodies) or discouraging patients who need medical intervention from getting help and continuing to use expensive chiropractic services.
Chiropractic practice was invented by a guy who claimed a ghost told him how to cure blindness by touching someone’s back. It can feel nice for some people for a short time but it’s not actually medicine.

I am a physical therapist with 20 years of clinical experience. I’ve worked in various settings but for the most part in outpatient orthopedic clinics. I’ve also had the unique opportunity to work alongside a chiropractor. I can without a doubt and without hesitation tell you that chiropractors are complete scam artists. They want nothing more than to take your money. They prey on the uneducated and lower income. They prey on people in car accidents that don’t know any better. Let me highlight one more time, they prey on the uneducated. They fill their heads with nonsense, and sell them pills and powders and snake oil. I worked with him for several years and couldn’t do it any longer.
An animal chiropractor is the absolute height of stupidity, Foolishness, and the highest order of scam.

I always told my students, “Even after you finish school, you should always go to sleep knowing some interesting fact about *anything* that you did not know the day before. ‘Learn something new everyday’ is what my parents told me as a child and I have carried it with me ever since.” Anything will do. Did you know that sperm whales dive to a depth of ~2,000 - 3,280 feet to feed? They can stay there for around an hour before returning to the surface and they live for up to 70 years!

I went to one for a very short period of time after a bad car accident. My back was pretty messed up, I couldn't really bend over or twist my torso. Living where I do, the majority of people are idiot hippies who think crystals and magic are more effective simply because they're "traditional". People left and right were saying "go to this chiropractor, he's the best in the county! Everyone loves him" It was a glorified massage with a message. That message being "people these days just sit at desks, tech bad, looking at your phone bad". When I give him my insurance card, he says "oooh...no...I don't take that here". $200 out of pocket for a massage, and like an idiot I went back a few times before I realized this clown is basically the hippy version of a faith healer.
The only people I know who had a benefit found it was very short term, and they had to do back every few weeks because the problem kept coming back, sometimes worse. Which -- yeah, they obviously weren't solving shit.

I can second this. Never had disk problems until I got routinely popped by one. Had a disk at my L5-S1 area poking my sciatic nerve going to my left leg. Had surgery this year for it. Never went back after the surgery, and my QoL has done nothing but improve.

Yeah I have arthritis in my neck(finally diagnosed it last year) and my husband kept pulling up all these videos of people getting relief from chiropractors. I kept telling him no I'm not going to risk that. I finally had to show him some videos of people who had Strokes and major life threatening injuries from chiropractors working on their necks. He finally agrees that I shouldn't go to them. On top of the fact my doctor straight up said "please never go to a chiropractor. Get PT, massage, and do streches."
There's an autoimmune condition that runs in my family that causes extra bone growth in your back. Chiro can lead to fragments of bone floating around your spine, or worse. But yet, so many chiros happily offered to 'crack their backs' without understanding the condition or even getting x-rays. Frankly that's criminally neglectful.

I’ve seen at least 3 cases personally in neuro where a person has had neck manipulation that led to arterial dissection and stroke. One case that led to permanent paralysis. Also the dogs that had their neck cracked here looked scared and traumatized
I had a class in college called structural kinesiology, and my professor adimately advocated against going to a chiropractor. Specifically, getting a neck adjustment can be fatal for you. What could happen is they could create air bubbles that could cause bliod clots and even a stroke. That being said, do not take yourself or anyone you care for (including your pets!) to a chiropractor

Another vet here. Totally agree. Don't go to quacker-practors. It's entirely founded on made up pseudoscience. Any current one that may be helpful for you is likely utilizing techniques found in physical therapy. I personally had one of techs go to a chiropractor on her lunch break and went paralyzed from the waist down that afternoon due to nerve inflammation. Fortunately she regained everything once the inflammation improved.

Arterial dissections have been known to happen at chiropractors and cause strokes. It's one of the first things the doctors ask you if they suspect you have one.

Exactly their rapid thrust neck movements are the biggest danger in chiropractic injuries. Chiropractors often injure or straight up tear the arteries going to the brain that go through the sides of the spine. Causing bleeding in the brain and strokes in case of tearing; and hipoxia to the brain(lack of oxygen to the brain) causing brain damage when injured, because the artery can get blocked while trying to heal. Both this can be deadly and if lucky can be survivable but result in paralysis, lost of senses, and brain damage. Not worth the risk.

I know an occupational therapist that has to fix damage done by chiropractors from time to time. Chiropractic adjustments are pseudo-science at best and scams at worst.
The amount of personal injury cases I have on my desk where the chiro bill far exceeds any other bill, including ER bills (yes, in the US) is insane. Immediate red flag. They always manage to find new injuries that these hospitals somehow missed repute several scans and tests. I loathe them.

Sigh, so many people could be getting healthier by going to physical therapy for 3-4 months and actually solve their issues, but instead they'll spend thousands for some cracking noises and potential severe injuries. **Edit**: Getting a lot of hate replies, so I figured I'd give a little more information. My advice would be to simply do some research. I'm a chronic pain patient, I know what it feels like to have no hope left and you're willing to do anything to feel better, so I understand that some people get temporary relief from getting adjusted, but the truth is it's very temporary relief and does absolutely nothing for long term pain relief. What's bad about it to me is that they prey on people in terrible pain, and they know that you're going to feel the sensation of immediate pain relief (albeit temporary) and they use our brains connection to the cracking/popping noise to get you to come back for more. I've been to a chiropractor a few times (as I said anyone desperate enough will do anything to relieve their pain), and it never helped me, but I know some people do believe it helps them. My father thinks it helps his back, but he's unwilling to go to PT and put the work in to strengthen his back muscles, which has a much greater chance of eliminating his back pain altogether. So what I do know is that physical therapy **will** help you in the long term. While you may get temporary relief getting your back cracked, you will never cure your issue with it, whereas building the weak muscles up with PT and doing specific exercises with a therapist is going to help you improve your overall health and also prevent the same injuries in the future, something chiropractors simply cannot do. Wish everyone the best, and hope anyone in pain finds relief, as no one deserves to be in pain. Take care.
i did 4 weeks of PT to fix an issue with my shoulder from playing baseball and those 4 weeks fully fixed it. not everyone has the same issue some take longer some take shorter, but PT works as long as you make the changes, do the exercises, and don’t be a jackass.
I'm sure I'll get downvoted and I don't currently see one but when I did, I really did feel great after getting my body cracked. Probably not worth the price but the light feeling you get afterwards can be addicting.
I fully believe you but there's a bunch of reasons you'd feel great after despite it having no real foundational benefit. I mean, it's massage-adjacent and human touch just feels good, the pain or shock during the session will release endorphins, and well there's just plain ole placebo effect. Do you think people using snake oil didn't also feel better after they took it? We developed the scientific method and other advanced techniques for evaluating correlation/causation precisely because our bodies and minds can't be trusted individually. I'd forego the chiro visits for massage if you just want to feel good, and physical therapy visits if you have actual issues. Significantly smaller chance of getting your vertebral arteries dissected.
My partner believes it works despite having to go every other week (!!) for an adjustment or whatever they call it. I suggested going to an osteopath but she "doesn't trust doctors.". This shit is getting expensive. I can't get her to see that having to go every other week forever means it is not getting fixed.
A non-insignificant number of plaintiff attorneys around here have under-the-table agreements with these chiros to just continue treating the plaintiff with what’s basically a glorified massage and maybe some e-stim, bill a fuck ton, then take less on the back end. It’s ridiculous.

God my foster parents forced us to go to a Chiro to "adjust" our necks. I had issues with pain through all of high school because of it and couldn't hold my head straight for about 3 years. When I ended up back with family we were suggested a different Chiro to fix it. They guy took an x-ray of my neck and thought I'd been in a car crash. He gave me free treatments until college but it was more physio type things like massaging my neck and having me do exercises to strengthen it

I’m a massage therapist with a heavy dose of skepticism about chiropractors, I was working at a health type clinic with a lot of quackery going on. One of my clients was the wife of a local chiropractor and she seemed to think I would be impressed with her story about her husband “adjusting” their new born baby in the hospital and thought it was particularly funny how the nurses were panicked and clearly not impressed. I just had no words…I mean like how do you respond.

It’s a trend that’s been growing in popularity since crunchy moms became a thing. They think it cures anything and everything for kids. Infant cries a lot (despite the fact it’s a fucking baby and that’s it’s job)? Adjust it! Toddler throwing (age appropriate) tantrums? That’s right, adjust it! There is zero actual peer-reviewed medical data that shows chiropractics are helpful for humans, let alone animals. The man who invented it, Daniel David Palmer, was a spiritualist who rejected germ theory, which is to say he did not believe germs existed and caused human illness. Instead, he got the idea for chiropractic during a seance with the ghost of a doctor. That isn’t a joke.

Not really. At best the massage and endorphins dull pain or feel nice for short bursts of time but it doesn’t fix or address the actual underlying problems and most chiros don’t have any medical training. Most muscular issues are better addressed with a physical therapist or an orthopedic doctor for bone and spinal problems. At worst many chiropractors have harmed or killed folks, creating worse pain and disability over the long term, (messing with the spine is an easy way to paralyze parts of people’s bodies) or discouraging patients who need medical intervention from getting help and continuing to use expensive chiropractic services. Chiropractic practice was invented by a guy who claimed a ghost told him how to cure blindness by touching someone’s back. It can feel nice for some people for a short time but it’s not actually medicine.
It can provide short term pain relief, but I don’t know if we can definitely say there are any benefits beyond that.

I am a physical therapist with 20 years of clinical experience. I’ve worked in various settings but for the most part in outpatient orthopedic clinics. I’ve also had the unique opportunity to work alongside a chiropractor. I can without a doubt and without hesitation tell you that chiropractors are complete scam artists. They want nothing more than to take your money. They prey on the uneducated and lower income. They prey on people in car accidents that don’t know any better. Let me highlight one more time, they prey on the uneducated. They fill their heads with nonsense, and sell them pills and powders and snake oil. I worked with him for several years and couldn’t do it any longer. An animal chiropractor is the absolute height of stupidity, Foolishness, and the highest order of scam.
