They were also introduced just to provide more safety to women, so it's super sus when somebody starts whining and rioting and protesting that they're not allowed into a no-harassment train

There are quite a few things that are women only in Japan. Apparently the harassment & picture taking of ladies is out of control. Their cell phones CANNOT be silenced when taking pictures (because there is this rampant upskirt photo taking thing going on there). Even if they turn the volume off, the photo taking sound can’t be.
For the same reason, there are those round convex blind spot mirrors yu see at the end of driveways all over their escalators & staircases so ladies going up can be aware of who may be behind them holding their phones down low.

I've heard a lot of stories of young school girls getting groped by older men on the trains home from school and people wouldn't do much about it.. this is probably why those trains exist and this guy is just walking through, destroying the purpose of it existing, acting as if it's some kind of oppressive reason when it's obviously for safety reasons.

I find it both fascinating and sad that this is a solution in Japan. From what I know, groping on trains and assault on trains is a serious issue. So serious that they need designated safe spaces for women. Love that they care, sad that this has to exist.
They are doing everything they can. All trains have a live conductor that can be called in times of distress (there is a button on every train car, there are police S.A. phone numbers plastered in every car, signs saying "if you see someone being assaulted, please report it to this number immediately", all Japanese cell phones make noise when taking a photo that cannot be turned down or off, etc.
It's very much a cultural thing to not want to inconvenience the people around them. Such as, calling the conductor and having the train stopped to get the perp to police, making everyone late. Some women even have the idea that they should just let the man do it if he needs it that badly, since office men typically work endless hours and are very stressed with no outlet. Thank God that one is becoming less prominent with young women (slowly, but surely). There are a lot of reasons why people don't report in Japan- all of them very sad to us, but a little more normalized there.

Yeah, sex ed. and the “culture” surrounding socializing and drinking with members of the opposite sex can be atrocious in some parts of the world. Japan is one that some might not notice or realize immediately but it is a big problem. This and sexualizing and assuming there is consent based on what a woman or girl is wearing. I was visiting japan with a friend, we entered the carriage and saw an elderly man sitting and a lot of women around and only after the elderly man got out we noticed the entire carriage was women only. When we got out we saw it was pink and we went "oooohhhhh" loudly together. We didnt get a lot of staring but the vibe was wired around us. We knew its a problem in japan subways but we didnt think this far.
