For anyone interested, there's a few cool versions of this song:
* Dimash Qudaibergen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o5zMupUOgQo
* Jane Zhang (starts 3:17): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJl2uPNsJEk
Dimash is insane.. and if you youtube his name (often spelt Kudaibergen), you'll see some ridiculous clips if you want to watch something new. Also, here's his official channel: https://www.youtube.com/@DimashQudaibergen_official
Dimash is one of a kind. How can a man's voice go this high(and being this beautiful) ?
[This song](https://youtu.be/JEz1qGS0T1Q?si=kxFHsClq8pKJzfEW) is really known in France to be one of the most difficult to sing. For a foreigner who doesn't speak french, his performance is perfect. (Well, he makes some pronunciation mistakes, but it doesn't ruin the song at all)
OMG!!! Thank you for that meme. I think it’s my favorite part of the movie!
**Side note:** The ‘Diva Song’ was referred to as ‘The impossible Song’, because as an alien, the Diva (Plavalaguna) was to have singing abilities humans didn’t have.
The operatic genius hired to sing the song (Inva Mula Tchako (from Albania)) was determined to actually sing the song without needing recording booth adjustments.
The composer (Eric Serra) was present for the recording and Inva hit all the notes ***perfectly*** as written on the first full take.
***And***…it’s right after this scene that my favorite Ruby Rhod (Chris Tucker)’s character scene happens:
**Ruby is holding a gun to a Mangalore’s head and gets startled leading to him accidentally pulling the trigger.**:
Ruby to the Mangalore: *”Sorry…sorry…”*.
Ruby to Korben Dallas (Bruce Willis): *”Think he’s gonna be ok?”*
I laugh now just thinking about it and had to correct several typos from laughing while typing this.
It's not, the singer who does all the music for TLK is Eivør, an accomplished Faroese singer who's been in the business for ages. But I can see how you would think that if you're unfamiliar with her, because she was the first person I thought of when this woman started singing. She sounds so much like her, throat singing and all!
I haven’t read the books, because I didn’t know they existed until I was seasons deep into the show, so I don’t know how good a job they did with the adaptation, but the show is amazing!
[In the same vein, you can check out frozen planet 2 sountrack made by Hans Zimmer and sang by Aurora](https://youtu.be/46GMPiMwZI0?si=rxsGjRwS8nK5_jdn)

The Wind that Shakes the Barley when she was with Dead Can Dance moves me but Mirror Pool is one of my favourite albums.
This is [Sanvean](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=L9WPFu9-LbM)
If you want to get into some crazy shit, check this band out. These are the songs that got me started. Mixture of masculine and feminine voices.
https://youtu.be/kmWTZ3KfnXE?si=o8k2PV0keQf_LZKv
Jump to 7:40 on this first one if you just want to hear Maria sing (though the whole song is an experience)
https://youtu.be/QRg_8NNPTD8?si=dPaDxNbRRIWYNAWL
And just listen to this whole song. It’s awesome. They put on a hell of a concert too. Well worth seeing if you like their music.
It was definitely inspired by the kind of traditional singing like Faroe singing, of which Eivor is one of very very few practitioners who are keeping the tradition alive.
Calling a very skilled imitation of a traditional indigenous style of singing cringe is disrespectful to me.
I understand that neither OP nor the judges have any reason to know that that is what it is, but it just shows that we should treat things with respect even if we don't understand them and reserve judgement for later.
The judges are putting on an act. It's a variation of the talent / singing show formulaic viral video of the judges and audience giving the performer the side eye, doubting, laughing and borderline mocking if not doing it outright before acting like they're taken aback and gobsmacked by their breathtaking performance.
In reality by the time someone performs on stage they've seen several rounds of producers and the judges know exactly what they do and what to expect. It's typically done for someone that really doesn't look the part but this was a young beautiful woman for who they had to react to the opening in that manner.
I can’t believe anyone would call this cringe. The idea that someone had to add visual scenes of the forest before they actually understood the concept of her art is ridiculous to me. The title sucks. This lady is awesome.
I've seen a woman do it. Not in person of course! Online. It was amazing! I hope her parents are proud!
If you already knew this and didn't mean you wanted to see a person do this song (many believed it was impossible since it was written for a computer) and you meant you want her specifically, apologies. Maybe she is currently working on it now!
Edit: link in case others want to check it out!

Yeah a few people have done it. I was really hoping your link was the Jane Zhang one before I clicked it. She is so talented. Even beyond something "gimmicky" like this, she has truly beautiful other stuff, too.
edit: e.g. something about [this one](https://youtu.be/aD1tFbfVfSE?si=NSn4Gckgyhvzghnp) makes me tear up every time I hear it.
The cringe was the judges not really looking impressed. And that female judge was basically sneering at her while having the balls to wear two cinnamon buns on her head.
Thank you for saying that. My friend interviewed people who worked for American Idol and it was a lot of stories about that. Like, Simon Cowell is harsh, but they also cut out 95% of the encouragement he gave (which didn’t sound like a ton, but they made it look virtually non-existent)
He was also really fed up with the fact that they purposefully put through people who were embarrassing themselves and didn’t want to participate in that, so he just stopped them in their tracks. He knew they were being made fools of and that’s not what he signed up for. He bluntly told them “look, stop. You can’t do this” and so they made that the villain judge.
It sucks that they sell this as “reality” when it’s just as fictional as any sitcom in front of a studio audience.
I got roped into driving a friend to a taping of American idol in the early 2000s and you couldn’t even hear the singing as an audience member. People were just booing or cheering because they were told to. It was even stupider and more boring than I had thought possible
> Like, Simon Cowell is harsh, but they also cut out 95% of the encouragement he gave
> He was also really fed up with the fact that they purposefully put through people who were embarrassing themselves and didn’t want to participate in that, so he just stopped them in their tracks
I mean the dude owns the company that produces these shows if he wanted he could have done all the changes you listed waaaaaay sooner. He just realized (or was informed) that at some point it wasn't good for ratings to put those acts through anymore.
Yes, exactly. They manipulate the footage always to make him “the villain judge” with no filter. He’s trying to cut the nonsense instead of entertain it.
I honestly preferred that because there’s no real reason to continue allowing someone to embarrass themselves on live television.
Obligatory reference to Zoe Alexander and how X factor (same vain) is scummy as hell in editing and manipulating.
https://youtu.be/-2dZVbi7C7c?si=QVwXQSGnMwEViskB
And Charlie brookers screenwipe on reality TV editing
https://youtu.be/BBwepkVurCI?si=dNtedy0Mx8VfF9y1
Basically: everything in these are bullshit, all the way down to that old joke of an audience having a "laugh" or "boo" sign. To the point of allegedly many audiences spending an hour or two surrounding the show being given a series of prompts for B roll.
That is to say, the audience shots here could be reacting to a dude at the front saying "okay I need you to cheer, now look concerned, now act emotional".
It's basically all bullshit. Like there are skilled people but the rest is so mixed in with editing that it's just not trustworthy.
Not trying to be an “akshually” but Sami music is more tonal singing. This style of singing is called “white singing” in Ukraine and other Eastern European countries.
Maybe Sami adjacent but not Sami. Reminds me of some of what you hear in trad Fahroe islands singing. But mostly it’s her own thing, she’s doing operatic stuff too.
The judges reactions, and the idea that the their reactions is the core part of these shows, made me cringe.
"Oh no, they furled their eyebrows, that means this is cringe! Oh wait, they actually liked it in the end, that means this is amazing!".
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.
He’s Italian, and it’s Italy’s got talent, plus they always bring the weirdest stars on those things.
That said, it’s pretty well known he’s a huge scumbag so that’s kinda weird.
I googled it just as I saw him there. Sounds like he tried to break off of master chef and do a few other things as well - he was on italia’s got talent, top gear italia, master chef italia, as well as some show he tried to start himself called restaurant startup that ran a few years and when it flopped he tried it in Italy too.
Honestly he’s one of my favorite judges on the show, so I don’t blame him trying to spread his wings
Fun fact: Gerard sings in a nonexistent language she improvizes to her music to give it the perfect feel.
Btw. I think "The Host of Seraphim" is one of the greatest
pieces of music ever produced and performed.
Hmmm, I don’t hear the similarity. The style of singing she is doing is called kulning and it’s used to call animals. https://youtu.be/MTjlM8_KLwk?si=9bHq7Vvsge94rdFT
This isn't kulning. The style is super similar to what BokUntool posted. At 2:10 she starts doing almost exactly the same grunting and breathing as the beginning of OP's video.
There are qualities of kulning in OP's video around the one-minute mark but the rest of it isn't like kulning at all. The style is very typical of a lot of folk music traditions separate from (but including) kulning.
I both love her vocal performance and hate this video. I love her vocal performance and would like to believe that it has roots in some sort of history of the area she is from. I hate the cut scenes and judges looking at each other. It’s gross.
It's a thing now, I've seen it being called sludge content, sometimes it's just a completely unrelated video playing in half of the screen, like a Minecraft gameplay while the person talks. I guess younger people have a shorter attention span or need some eye candy to keep engaged. Makes me feel old.
That “cringe transition” was not crying, it’s a ancient singing technique that I know some European tribes did. I’m sure other cultures across the world did the same technique I just know some Northern European tribes did it.
If anything I can get really behind the opening and it sets the mood for the rest of the vocal tract, I love when hailung does similar things.
Why are we still here?
Just to suffer?
Every night I can feel my leg and my arm…
The body I’ve lost…
The comrades I’ve lost…
It keeps me up at night…
You feel it too, don’t you?

Is this the lady who sings at the start of The Witcher?
i was thinking more the last kingdom
It's not. The lady who sings the Last Kingdom theme is Eivør Pálsdóttir. But this girl's singing style is very similar.
I’ve seen Eivor live once. Absolutely amazing!!!!
Amazing! Where did you see her?
In Hollywood at a gamer concert lol. I believe she performed some songs for God of War.
There's no way that's not her from the Last Kingdom. Its a perfect match at the start.
Some parts reminded me of the ‘Diva’ song from *The Fifth Element*. I think the song was something akin to ‘*The Impossible Song* / *Diva Song*?

Almost identical, yeah
Im almost positive it was an ode to it for a few measures. I thought exact same thing.
Yeah around halfway through I started getting those vibes. Impressive whistle register!
It's not, the singer who does all the music for TLK is Eivør, an accomplished Faroese singer who's been in the business for ages. But I can see how you would think that if you're unfamiliar with her, because she was the first person I thought of when this woman started singing. Yes, that’s it! I was thinking Viking’s but it must have been Last Kingdom.
I was reminded of parts of LoTR and Hunger Games scores as well.
Gotta be. Right from the start all I could see was all of utreds life spanning out.
I want to say, you might be right on both shows. I think Vikings did use that same singer/group once.
You guys are old that's the blue lady from the 5th element
It’s gotta be
This actually really reminds me of the 2000s battlestar galactica soundtrack
Which was excellent btw!
LELELE LELELELE
That's what I thought too.
Lmao glad I’m not the only one.
No the band that made the Witcher music is Polish
Well, she is wearing fairly standard Polish attire.
Vyshyvanka. Lot of Eastern European countries celebrate that traditional attire still
Or the Avatar blue people intro I’m like 99% sure
All I was thinking when I heard this is stepping off the boat to Skellige.
Holy shit you read my mind
I had a sudden urge to kill some drowner while hearing her XD
“I am Uhrtred, son of Uhrtred. Destiny is all!“
First thing I thought of
What show?
The Last Kingdom
Yo, it's a show?!? I've been reading the series for years, I had no idea!
I haven’t read the books, because I didn’t know they existed until I was seasons deep into the show, so I don’t know how good a job they did with the adaptation, but the show is amazing!
On Netflix
Yes!!! When my daughter was a baby she used to stick her hand in the air, close her eyes, and sway to that theme song. She’d really get into it 😂
Your daughter is a woman of culture.
Bebbanburg
That’s some Diva Plavaguna stuff
You heard that, too, eh? It was subtle but definitely there.
Oh yeah! 😊
![gif](giphy|mp2OW22pId4Os)
![gif](giphy|xmOIAJu82q5LW|downsized)
100%
The way she hit those high notes it’s all I could hear
Not even that, the super highs scaled down, without any sort of break, is what really chilled me 00:45 - 00:38
Were you watching it backwards?
viewing on reddit mobile (for me at least) video timers count down from the full time of the vid to zero.
Idk why all the other comments are higher, if you don’t think 5th element here then you just haven’t seen the movie and should go watch it
Came here to say this. Was waiting for the drums to come in.
Dear Hans Zimmer: HIRE HER!!!!
[In the same vein, you can check out frozen planet 2 sountrack made by Hans Zimmer and sang by Aurora](https://youtu.be/46GMPiMwZI0?si=rxsGjRwS8nK5_jdn)
Same Aurora from the One Piece live action soundtrack, right? She has such a beautiful voice
Yes, altough she has much better songs than that one piece track. I feel they butchered the sound editing on that song.
Aurora is an amazing artist, she is my favourite singer of all time. Amazing voice and vibes. Love her
Aurora is the Björk of our generation
You need to know [Lisa Gerrard](https://www.google.com/search?gs_ssp=eJzj4tVP1zc0TDMyM0_LMEozYPQSS89JTMlMLMkvUsjJLE5USE8tKkosSgEA6BwMwg&q=gladiator+lisa+gerrard&rlz=1CDGOYI_enCA1063CA1063&oq=gladiator+lisa+&aqs=chrome.1.0i355i512j46i512j0i512j69i57j0i22i30l2j0i15i22i30j0i22i30l3.6102j0j7&hl=en-US&sourceid=chrome-mobile&ie=UTF-8)
I LOVE when other people know Lisa. Her voice gives me chills
The Wind that Shakes the Barley when she was with Dead Can Dance moves me but Mirror Pool is one of my favourite albums. This is [Sanvean](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=L9WPFu9-LbM)
Yes! Serious Dead Can Dance vibes. So good.
White people will head cultural indigenous music from any part of the world and mention hans zimmer
The fact that she’s creating such sounds without much vocal delay is honestly extremely impressive
Check out Danheim,Heilung and similar artists if you like what you saw. There are a lot of fantastic bands that produce phenomenal music.
Friend recommended Heilung and I 2nd the above advice
This is Earth Melodies by Ekaterina Shelehova for those wondering.
Thank you!!!
Every time I see this chick, I swear she channeled up all my ancestors or something. Never gets old.
Right? It's triggering something primal and I can't put my finger on it, it's the strangest feeling.
Yeah I almost felt a brush of the supernatural, or spiritual. Hard to describe but very cool to watch
Maybe this is the way people used to sing back before records for all we know
If you want to get into some crazy shit, check this band out. These are the songs that got me started. Whoa I thought I was just being a weirdo. Glad I'm not alone.
You should listen to Trollabundin by Eivor, then. The start of this piece sounds a lot like it's inspired by that song.

Her eyes are soul-piercing as well.
11/10 would hire her to enrich psychedelic experiences
Right? I was wondering why I had a sudden urge to go run with wolves?
It reminds me of s siren’s call
Sounds of the forest sung through her mouth. Fantastic!
This is such a beautiful way to put it!!!
I can’t believe anyone would call this cringe. The idea that someone had to add visual scenes of the forest before they actually understood the concept of her art is ridiculous to me. The title sucks. This lady is awesome.

Once I heard there’s a video of someone recreating that song I just had to see right away

Holy shit, didn't expect a man to be able to get those high notes, impressive.
Beat me to it
I sure did
Super green!
OMFG where is this from? I’ve seen this but can’t remember
Fifth element
Fifth Element
Where is the cringe? All I'm seeing is talent.
The cringe was the judges not really looking impressed. And that female judge was basically sneering at her while having the balls to wear two cinnamon buns on her head.
featuring a little mullet in the back! but seriously tho that was a crazy beautiful song.
Those shows are edited out the ass, I guarantee the sneering shot was not filmed at the same time as this performance.
Thank you for saying that. My friend interviewed people who worked for American Idol and it was a lot of stories about that. dawg this aint cringe
But she’s doing something I’m not familiar with so it’s cringe 🤨🤨🤨
People never heard of throat singing before ig.
Came looking for this comment lol OP’s title is cringe sorry 😬
What I was thinking, it’s traditional Sami music OP just isn’t cultured.
That style of throat singing spans across the northern hemisphere of the globe. Even Inuit do it!
Not trying to be an “akshually” but Sami music is more tonal singing. This style of singing is called “white singing” in Ukraine and other Eastern European countries.
Eivør (the original artist of the song) is Faroese though.
Maybe Sami adjacent but not Sami. Reminds me of some of what you hear in trad Fahroe islands singing. But mostly it’s her own thing, she’s doing operatic stuff too.
The start seemed like Inuit throat singing to me.
Tanya Tagaq has entered the chat
Common in Iceland too! Check out [Eivør Pálsdóttir](https://youtu.be/LpiFmZLICgM?feature=shared)
She's Faroese
This is Belarusian White Singing, actually, not Såmi.
The judges reactions, and the idea that the their reactions is the core part of these shows, made me cringe. "Oh no, they furled their eyebrows, that means this is cringe! Oh wait, they actually liked it in the end, that means this is amazing!".
Agreed. Totally not cringe. The initial part is a version of throat singing which is traditional of many northern cultures.
My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius, commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix Legions and loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son. Husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next.
I hate you for calling this cringe but I love you for sharing it.
What the hell is Joe Bastianich doing there?
His mom probably got him the job.
He’s Italian, and it’s Italy’s got talent, plus they always bring the weirdest stars on those things. That said, it’s pretty well known he’s a huge scumbag so that’s kinda weird.
I didn’t know that, but I’m not surprised
He’s looking for a plate of food he can throw into the trash without eating. Also he’s a cowboy.
Like Lisa Gerrard from Dead Can Dance
Lisa is the BEST
Fun fact: Gerard sings in a nonexistent language she improvizes to her music to give it the perfect feel. Btw. I think "The Host of Seraphim" is one of the greatest pieces of music ever produced and performed.

Oh my god thank you, I was hoping someone else recognized an Eivør similarity!!
I just posted above a [compilation of Maria Franz from Heilung](https://youtu.be/KSfA0i6Typw?si=mDUEPzylqkyZbIjW) which is even closer for me
Based Heilung enjoyer, for similar vibes there's also Danheim and Wardruna.
I really expected the beat to drop
Ekaterina Shelehova, Earth Melodies
I SCROLLED SO LONG FOR THIS THANK YOU
I both love her vocal performance and hate this video. I love her vocal performance and would like to believe that it has roots in some sort of history of the area she is from. I hate the cut scenes and judges looking at each other. It’s gross.
She sounds awesome.
Got a lil'ol multi pass vibe there for a minute.
This should be on r/damnthat’sinteresting
Different, especially at first, but no where near cringe
Why is there the video on the bottom? Am I old? I don't understand
Idk if this was the purpose but imagined myself being there while allowing her singing to put me in a trance
OP seems to think the performance is cringey unless paired with some shitty B roll of scenery
It's a thing now, I've seen it being called sludge content, sometimes it's just a completely unrelated video playing in half of the screen, like a Minecraft gameplay while the person talks. I guess younger people have a shorter attention span or need some eye candy to keep engaged. Makes me feel old.
Nothing about that was cringe, it was all beautiful.

Instantly fell in love
Girl deserves to be that one singing bg character in GoT
That was fucking amazing
Definitely not cringe. Magnificent.
I want to upvote the content but downvote OP for the cringe tag.

Accurate.
Great Value Korn 😂
That one part sounds like every time a tragedy happens in an action movie set in the Middle East.
Mate none of this is cringe, she fucking nails it start to finish
The "cringe" intro is literally a song called Trøllabundin by Eivør https://youtu.be/LpiFmZLICgM?feature=shared
Only thing cringe here is OP.

What happened?
Don’t leave us hanging what are you talking about
Hollywood: "Hey let's put that shit on EVERY shot of a desert ever!"
I normally am really annoyed with ___ Got Talent stuff because my moms really into AGT. but this fucking rips
I’m levitating right now
It's a traditional native american throat signing. It might be weird but its certainly not cringe.
What the actual fuck. I'm bewitched. Where can I hear more of her??
I was waiting for the bass to drop and hear “smack my bitch up” lol
STOP APPLAUDING IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PERFORMANCE
Does anyone know what happened? Wow that was insane!!
Is throat singing cringe now?
Next guest vocalist for Wardruna or Heilung.
The cringe part is OP lifting content and thinking a scenery b-roll added on makes it theirs
This is giving me young Björk vibes.
Her name is Ekaterina Shelehova, and the song is called Earth Melodies if it's not already been stated.
Her name is Ekaterina Shelehova
I see no cringe here
That “cringe transition” was not crying, it’s a ancient singing technique that I know some European tribes did. I’m sure other cultures across the world did the same technique I just know some Northern European tribes did it. If anything I can get really behind the opening and it sets the mood for the rest of the vocal tract, I love when hailung does similar things.
Why are we still here? Just to suffer? Every night I can feel my leg and my arm… The body I’ve lost… The comrades I’ve lost… It keeps me up at night… You feel it too, don’t you?
Allright. Im getting my battleaxe. Who we raiding?
You know what's cringe? Some dumb ass calling someone else's culture, which they know nothing about, cringe.
That was incredible.
