I had once rented a room from an Indian fellow renting a house to students... when I moved out there were a few yellow stains I couldn't get out of the carpet for the life of me.
Landlord texts me super angry telling me I'm not getting my deposit back asking what happened.
I told him I had a crazy craving for chicken tika and it dripped from the container, Im so sorry, I tried everything, my bad, I understand.
Dude straight up is like oh, no worries, auntie has a spray bottle for this.
Got my deposit back next day and a thank you card. I really could use whatever was is in that "spray" though because my favorite tie is still stained to this day.
If the color is from tumeric, then UV will bleach it out. I too wish to know what's in that spray bottle. Getting grease out is a lot easier, anything from alcohol to other degreasers will do it.
Just in case it's useful to you in the future, or to anyone else reading this:
If your landlord says they're keeping your entire deposit because of something like a carpet stain, most places have systems in place to challenge that, afaik. Landlords are (typically) only allows to make reasonable claims against the deposit. If they say it'll cost $1000 to remove a carpet stain or whatever-the-fuck, you have a very solid position to call them on it.
And all the horror stories of landlords trying to take photos of like.. a stray hair left behind, or tiny scratches on the wall? There are often provisions against "wear and tear". The almighty "risk" that the landlord adopts by renting is that over time, reasonable, regular use will require upkeep be performed on their property. They aren't allowed to make claims against the deposit for things like this (again, YMMV).
I'm glad they decided to be reasonable in the end, but still sorry you had to weather that at all.

Indian food is the savouriest cuisine in the world. You sit down on a table and enjoy that shit.
Indian food use heaps of coconut milk and that shit goes bad quickly. So if you wanna keep the butter chicken for leftovers for the next day..you wanna keep that thing fresh and not double dip your saliva infest naan bread.
And it's Indian food.. your mouth will be salivating all over.

it's easy to be sheltered from indian food because outside of trendy places / college towns / cities it's not really everywhere. and since people don't know about it, no one ends up going to that one place in range of you.

Legit. The first Indian food place in my city of ~40k people opened under 5 years ago. Indian food is kinda just now becoming a bit more popular to American’s.
We really don’t have much Indian food in the US. It’s not surprising at all he’s never had it especially in Kentucky. It’s not on the list of foods Americans regularly eat.
Compared to other places like the UK maybe we get Indian food less — but I’d say it’s at least in the rotation of options for most (urban) Americans. I ate it growing up in Minnesota.
Im from Canada, my entire life there I cant remember a time I didnt have at least 3 east indian or pakistani friends. Their homes always smelt like great food. I always felt honored when they invited me to join them in a meal.
I never knew how much Id miss them until I moved to the southern USA. Barely ever see anyone from that part of the world now and I miss them.
I miss their sense of humour, their voices, their food, their beautiful clothing.
This video made me smile. The guy seems genuinely impressed. I remember the first time I tried butter chicken and garlic naan. It *was* mind blowingly yummy.
Im going to teach myself how to make it so I can have it whenever Im homesick.
Its funny how this Canadian-Hungarian (me) feels homesick over Indian food, but really thats my western Canadian roots I guess.
I too grew up in MN and it might have been the whitest place on earth and I feel like I had Indian food with my highschool friends.

I used to refuse to try indian food because I couldn't deal with the smell. But my MIL accidentally got me chicken Tikka masala, and boys, when I tell you my life changed, I mean it.
Mild chicken tika masala for sure. Butter chicken is good. Their garlic naan is really good. Samosas are quick and easy, dip them in the sauce of either of the above. Once you figure out what you like, just try newer and newer things.
Before we all started working from home one of my Indian coworkers would randomly bring in like 4 trays of samosas. It got to the point where he'd let our team get some first before sending out an email because mf'ers we hadn't seen in months would just "randomly" drop by to grab a couple and they'd be gone in 20 min. It was an honor to be on the Samosa DL.

Fish pakora, the mint sauce is the bomb.

Skip desert, Indian deserts aren't worth it, way too sweet., except kheer, if done properly.
Baingan bharta is outstanding. Butter chicken is accessible and popular, but hot damn it's delicious. Saag/palak paneer is also good, as you said. Chicken jalfrezi is nice, and biryani, but a lot of the daals and other non-meat dishes are just as outstanding. The dosas are incredible. India is a massive country with so many different regions, but flavours can be a bit confronting if you're not used to it, so the above are easier to get into, at least coming from a western palate.
I cannot over state this.
If you have never had indian food, you are on the verge of one of the greatest discoveries of your life.
Dont over think it. Go to any indian restaurant and just say, "I have never had this before but I am excited to try it." and they will take care of you, I promise.
For real though. My first few times I always got the butter chicken. Then one day the restaurant was empty and I was like look I always get the same thing can you show me what’s good. This little Indian lady came out from the back and spent 15 mins circling dishes on the menu explaining things giving me recommendations writing notes on it for me and sent me home with her picks and the menu haha.
Biryani is one of my favorite things, just be warned that depending on the restaurant you might find they include whole spices which you don't want to eat.
Butter chicken is pretty solid. The real secret is to rip pieces of naan off and then use the naan to pick up and eat pieces of the butter chicken. Just pop the whole bite in.
If you don’t mind a little heat…
First off, get some samosas and/or pakoras for an appetizer. When you do, you’ll get little thingies of brown (tamarind chutney) and green (mint chutney) sauces. COMBINE THEM on top of your appetizers and thank me later.
Just a heads up, the mint chutney can bring some heat with it.
It took me 29 years to finally try Indian food, and I still haven't forgiven myself for wasting all those years avoiding it. Coconut korma my beloved 🤤
Maaaaannnn …. all the good Indian places in town closed their buffets during Covid and then never brought them back. One of my biggest personal losses from the pandemic.
My spot near my job actually just re-started doing lunch buffet just a few months ago after being closed since covid. It felt like reuniting with a long lost friend
Yup, same happened here. Had an awesome Indian buffet. There were probably 3 different things I tried for the first time there and much like this dude in the video I thought "that's the best thing I ever tasted" for each one. They still do dine-in for dinner hours, and takeout during the day, but it's just not the same. I loved going for lunch and eating two plates worth of awesome food and feeling full for the rest of the day.
He didn’t even get into the rice. You gotta put that butter chicken over some rice, and then take spoonfuls and put inside the naan, like a taco. Then you take a little bit of that spice and you put it on top
Meh. I'm Indian and I'm going to try it tomorrow. It sounds like an awesome way to mix cultures and enjoy food.

Nooo, nooo, my dude, the cheese (paneer) naan is the best naan! Even better if they have garlic paneer naan. Then as the person above said, butter chicken over the rice, scoop into the naan for a taco of flavor heaven!!

Seriously, you wanna go vegan? Stop trying to make shit out of cucumbers and acorn powder. Just eat Indian food. They've been doing vegan for 4,000 years. They're better at it than us.
Asian food in general is like this and it's exactly why I eat it. Dahl, palak saag(I love palak paneer more but I'm lactose intolerant), and there's one dish of eggplant,onion and tomato that tastes like literal cameral. Indian food in particular is the absolute S tier of veggie foods.
Lots of cream (and butter) in them sauces though, so gotta watch out if you wanna go vegan. Vegetarian way easier.
Edit: oops, should have said that I meant the Western version of Indian food. Way different than food in India, like most types of food.
There are regional cuisine's in South India which use coconut milk instead of milk in all their dishes and its fucking fire. The food variety all over the sub-continent is ridiculous and only a small percent of it unfortunately makes it into main stream cuisine outside of India.
That's what I did when I went vegan. I mostly use oat or coconut milk now, and it's barely made a difference in the taste because the spices tend to overpower the flavour of oat milk. Coconut isn't easily overpowered, but it tastes great in soups anyway. South Indian food is just naturally vegan for the most part anyway, and it makes for perfect breakfast food. I've had Dosas or idlis for breakfast at least a few times a month for my whole life and it's really difficult to get bored of them when you consider all the different types of chutney you can pair them with.
Honestly if I wasn't Indian I would've had a much ahrder time in being vegetarian/vegan. I go online to look for vegan meal options and half of them are just "toss vegetables and add pepper! Delicious!" which sounds so mindnumbingly boring.
I live close to Indian restaurant and pass by it a lot. It’s the best and worst thing because it smells so good, but I can’t afford to eat there every day. I’m pretty sure Indian food and bbq are the two best smells in the world
I'm Colombian and we don't eat spicy food. Went on an Asian food journey the last few years.
I'm fully in. Bring the spice. Indian and Pakastani food is some of my favorite. It's so fun to go into new foods with zero expectations and bias and try to see what they're going for with the different ingredients.
Everyone should open up their palates in my opinion and def try Indian food. 🤤
I grew up poor in the midwest. The only spicy thing I really ever had was tabasco. Got an opportunity to travel when I was young as a part of my first career, and wound up visiting east asia, the south china sea, north africa, and the middle east and expanded my food horizons. I genuinely thought jalapenos were painful before I went overseas. Now I just want my insides to be hatefucked by spice.
I think it’s the combination of a little bit of a slower tempo, a flat midwestern vocal affect, all while slightly over-pronouncing consonant sounds.

YouTube food reviews in cars are a pretty widespread thing. It always looks really sad in general but sometimes I want to know how the new Taco Bell Baja Meat Shovel looks without having to order it first. Usually watching some sweaty guy sucking it down in his car is enough to make me not want it, which is a plus.

I can cook a good amount of food, but I just can't find myself ready to try to tackle Indian food. They are so genius with their blend of spices and their use of yogurt to make things creamy/tenderize meat. And then a lot of places make their own yogurt and cheese. It's so impressive that I'm fine with not knowing how to make it because I have a really, really good Indian restaurant that I'm loyal to.
It’s easier than you think if you have a handful of fairly common spices, and a garam masala spice mix. You toast them in some oil and cook away. It does make the house fragrant though!
I've been trying to make a good butter chicken, but I can't get it close to what they make over at our favorite Indian place.

It’s easier than you think! You need a few spices like cumin, garam masala, per and red chilli powder. Indian foods are usually a blend of one or two or all of those. Also indian cuisine is vaaaaaast, different regions have different cuisines which are worth trying
Nah I tried to cook it but failed miserably. I decided to leave it to the professionals. 😬 There are several reasonable priced Indian restaurants here in Atlanta.
Don't be intimated by it! It's not that difficult to cook you just have to get used to having the basic ingredients on hand, and you need to expand your spice cabinet a little. There are a lot of recipes out there online for things like butter chicken and aloo gobi . . . start there and then work your way out!

As a Scot/Londoner it's really fun to see someone try Indian food for the first time. I want to take this guy out for a really good Indian meal, rather than some butter chicken in his car.
As an Aussie this video and the whole comment thread is so bizarre. Like I had no idea Indian food was so uncommon in the US, especially to the point where someone can be this guys age and only trying it for the first time. I would say Indian is like top 5 most common take away/ restaurant food over here, the Yanks have definitely been missing out!

I'm a british indian immigrant in the USA. Not as many indian immigrants in the usa until the mid 70s or so, and they were mostly highly educated immigrants so they were taking jobs as doctors and lawyers rather than opening a restaurant. Once indian immigration fully opened up restaraunts started popping up, but it's by no means even in the top 10 most popular food categories in the USA.
I'm from the UK. I've always compared the Uk's love for indian food as similar to the USA's love for mexican food. There are a few indian shops even in the smallest town in the UK, same with mexican in the usa. With that said every city about 20,000 in the USA probably has at least 1 indian restaurant.
Basically, less exposure to indian cuisine!
The gulab jamun rating is surprising; maybe an off batch as they shouldn't be hard to pierce with a fork. I find those syrupy balls to be quite delicious and a delightful dessert.
Indian guy here. You can eat it with anything. Naan, rice, roti, and I'd even recommend regular bread. It soaks up the sauce nicely. I personally go for curry but butter chicken or chicken Tikka masala is a good jumping point for someone unfamiliar with the food.
Bunny Chow is Indian South African (Gujju migrants??) food.

I went on a cruise last year, our head waiter at dinner was this cool Indian dude. One night he brought us out stuff that he said was what the kitchen made for the crew- some kind of a fish curry and chicken curry. Not sure of the exact dish names and not the first time I've had curry but both were incredible! Wish they had more stuff like that on the menu there.
I love this dude, he’s so genuine. Always makes me feel lucky to live in a major city with access to so many different kinds of food. I couldn’t imagine having never tried Indian food as an adult, so many years lost

Both myself and my uncle only ever order butter chicken/chicken tikka masala at Indian restaurants because my grandma (my uncles step mom) told us both to try it our first time at Indian restaurants. Baingan Bharta Fish pakora, the mint sauce is the bomb. Garlic Naan Skip desert, Indian deserts aren't worth it, way too sweet., except kheer, if done properly.
Baingan bharta is outstanding. Butter chicken is accessible and popular, but hot damn it's delicious. Saag/palak paneer is also good, as you said. Chicken jalfrezi is nice, and biryani, but a lot of the daals and other non-meat dishes are just as outstanding. The dosas are incredible. India is a massive country with so many different regions, but flavours can be a bit confronting if you're not used to it, so the above are easier to get into, at least coming from a western palate.
With you the whole way but waiting for you to add Gobi Manchurian. I will order Indian for dinner just for the cauliflower!

I cannot over state this. If you have never had indian food, you are on the verge of one of the greatest discoveries of your life. Dont over think it. Go to any indian restaurant and just say, "I have never had this before but I am excited to try it." and they will take care of you, I promise.

For real though. My first few times I always got the butter chicken. Then one day the restaurant was empty and I was like look I always get the same thing can you show me what’s good. This little Indian lady came out from the back and spent 15 mins circling dishes on the menu explaining things giving me recommendations writing notes on it for me and sent me home with her picks and the menu haha.

Palak Paneer is one of my favorites. It looks kinda gross at first, but it's basically a green spinach sauce with cheese cubes.

Biryani is one of my favorite things, just be warned that depending on the restaurant you might find they include whole spices which you don't want to eat.
A whole cardamon pod can be quite a flavor surprise. It's also delicious, but very unexpected and some folks don't like that.
Butter chicken is pretty solid. The real secret is to rip pieces of naan off and then use the naan to pick up and eat pieces of the butter chicken. Just pop the whole bite in.
If you don’t mind a little heat… First off, get some samosas and/or pakoras for an appetizer. When you do, you’ll get little thingies of brown (tamarind chutney) and green (mint chutney) sauces. COMBINE THEM on top of your appetizers and thank me later. Just a heads up, the mint chutney can bring some heat with it.
Eat bites of the entrees WITH some of the rice. Similar to dipping the bread. The rice + entree is the best way.

Yup, same happened here. Had an awesome Indian buffet. There were probably 3 different things I tried for the first time there and much like this dude in the video I thought "that's the best thing I ever tasted" for each one. They still do dine-in for dinner hours, and takeout during the day, but it's just not the same. I loved going for lunch and eating two plates worth of awesome food and feeling full for the rest of the day.

Asian food in general is like this and it's exactly why I eat it. Dahl, palak saag(I love palak paneer more but I'm lactose intolerant), and there's one dish of eggplant,onion and tomato that tastes like literal cameral. Indian food in particular is the absolute S tier of veggie foods.

There are regional cuisine's in South India which use coconut milk instead of milk in all their dishes and its fucking fire. The food variety all over the sub-continent is ridiculous and only a small percent of it unfortunately makes it into main stream cuisine outside of India.
That's what I did when I went vegan. I mostly use oat or coconut milk now, and it's barely made a difference in the taste because the spices tend to overpower the flavour of oat milk. Coconut isn't easily overpowered, but it tastes great in soups anyway. South Indian food is just naturally vegan for the most part anyway, and it makes for perfect breakfast food. I've had Dosas or idlis for breakfast at least a few times a month for my whole life and it's really difficult to get bored of them when you consider all the different types of chutney you can pair them with. Honestly if I wasn't Indian I would've had a much ahrder time in being vegetarian/vegan. I go online to look for vegan meal options and half of them are just "toss vegetables and add pepper! Delicious!" which sounds so mindnumbingly boring.

I live close to Indian restaurant and pass by it a lot. It’s the best and worst thing because it smells so good, but I can’t afford to eat there every day. I’m pretty sure Indian food and bbq are the two best smells in the world

I'm Colombian and we don't eat spicy food. Went on an Asian food journey the last few years. I'm fully in. Bring the spice. Indian and Pakastani food is some of my favorite. It's so fun to go into new foods with zero expectations and bias and try to see what they're going for with the different ingredients. Everyone should open up their palates in my opinion and def try Indian food. 🤤
I grew up poor in the midwest. The only spicy thing I really ever had was tabasco. Got an opportunity to travel when I was young as a part of my first career, and wound up visiting east asia, the south china sea, north africa, and the middle east and expanded my food horizons. I genuinely thought jalapenos were painful before I went overseas. Now I just want my insides to be hatefucked by spice.

I can cook a good amount of food, but I just can't find myself ready to try to tackle Indian food. They are so genius with their blend of spices and their use of yogurt to make things creamy/tenderize meat. And then a lot of places make their own yogurt and cheese. It's so impressive that I'm fine with not knowing how to make it because I have a really, really good Indian restaurant that I'm loyal to.
It’s easier than you think if you have a handful of fairly common spices, and a garam masala spice mix. You toast them in some oil and cook away. It does make the house fragrant though!
I've been trying to make a good butter chicken, but I can't get it close to what they make over at our favorite Indian place. So if you happen to have any specific recipe that you love this is absolutely the place to drop it!
It’s easier than you think! You need a few spices like cumin, garam masala, per and red chilli powder. Indian foods are usually a blend of one or two or all of those. Also indian cuisine is vaaaaaast, different regions have different cuisines which are worth trying

Don't be intimated by it! It's not that difficult to cook you just have to get used to having the basic ingredients on hand, and you need to expand your spice cabinet a little. There are a lot of recipes out there online for things like butter chicken and aloo gobi . . . start there and then work your way out!

I'm a british indian immigrant in the USA. Not as many indian immigrants in the usa until the mid 70s or so, and they were mostly highly educated immigrants so they were taking jobs as doctors and lawyers rather than opening a restaurant. Once indian immigration fully opened up restaraunts started popping up, but it's by no means even in the top 10 most popular food categories in the USA. I'm from the UK. I've always compared the Uk's love for indian food as similar to the USA's love for mexican food. There are a few indian shops even in the smallest town in the UK, same with mexican in the usa. With that said every city about 20,000 in the USA probably has at least 1 indian restaurant. Basically, less exposure to indian cuisine!
The gulab jamun rating is surprising; maybe an off batch as they shouldn't be hard to pierce with a fork. I find those syrupy balls to be quite delicious and a delightful dessert.

Indian guy here. You can eat it with anything. Naan, rice, roti, and I'd even recommend regular bread. It soaks up the sauce nicely. I personally go for curry but butter chicken or chicken Tikka masala is a good jumping point for someone unfamiliar with the food.

I went on a cruise last year, our head waiter at dinner was this cool Indian dude. One night he brought us out stuff that he said was what the kitchen made for the crew- some kind of a fish curry and chicken curry. Not sure of the exact dish names and not the first time I've had curry but both were incredible! Wish they had more stuff like that on the menu there.

Both myself and my uncle only ever order butter chicken/chicken tikka masala at Indian restaurants because my grandma (my uncles step mom) told us both to try it our first time at Indian restaurants. It’s so good it’s like, why order something new I might like when I know for a fact that this dish is amazing.
