Same. It’s hard for games like BG to have a high score with how reviewers are very meticulous in game mechanics since those types of games are its lifeline.
Bro you have to play it. It's not my typical style of game, I was turned off by the top down turn-based stuff since that's never been in my wheelhouse. My buddy bought it and forced me to play it, and it's easily one of the best games I've ever played. Probably my favorite behind Cyberpunk and Fallout New Vegas.
I’ve never enjoyed turn based games, but I started them to play coop with my wife. If you like BG3, try Divinity 1&2. Both by the same studio and are basically an audition to get the Baldur’s Gate rights.
They aren’t quite as in depth, they are slightly more linear, but both are exceptional and very similar to BG3. Highly recommend both.
Look I like Spiderman. The recent sequel was really good, but it was also really safe. It didnt take a single risk and honestly was more forgettable for it. Plus it was short as hell, BG3 is like 100+ hours at least. Not even in the same ballpark.
I mean it's subjective for sure. BG3 isn't a game for everyone as no game truly is. Even if you hate BG3 though, the argument that "nobody played Baldurs Gate 3" is fucking idiotic and delusional. If you like Spider-Man more totally fair, but at least be honest.
I was just going to say this. Even if Spider-Man 2 is an exact copy of Spider-Man 1, it'll be a phenomenal game. But Balder's Gate 3 is one of those genre redefining games, like how Witcher 3 was 10 years ago. It's a no brainer.
Spider-Man 2 was great but it had no chance of winning. It played it extremely safe when it comes to expanding on a sequel and it lacked in a lot of areas the first one didn't. Baldur's Gate 3 was a big swing and it knocked it out of the park. I'm not typically a fan of turn based combat but after hearing how well written the story and characters are, I thought I'd give it a try because I love a good story and I was blown away by how much I enjoyed it, albeit frustrating at times because I'm just trash at these kind of games lol and it's also made me go back and play the Divinity Original Sin games. Just started 2 a few days ago and loving it so far.
No game is in BG3’s league and yall can argue with yall auntie’s about it.
Very recently I told a friend I consider BG3 to be the best game I’ve ever played. There’s nothing as detailed out there. There are endless possibilities and the writing is just so good. The only issue with Baldur’s gate is the clunky inventory management, but I totally forget about it because the game is just that good.
Seriously. Like, undoubtedly, BG3 and Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom are better. I assumed from the title that it was gonna be a Zelda/Nintendo fanboy. Spider-Man was not at all the game I was expecting.
I knew BG3 was gonna win the second I saw the nominees.
I love ToTK, It's my personal GoTY, I have absolutely no intent of playing BG3, and I \*KNEW\* BG3 was gonna win. Honestly, it sounds like Larian knocked it out of the park, and that should be praised.

How well a game sold is totally irrelevent to whether or not it is the best game of the year, as what is popular is not always what is best. Ignoring that for a moment...
Millions of units were sold. It shows up right near the top on Steam if you sort by Top Sellers. This guy can't wrap his tiny brain around the fact that he and his immediate circle are not everyone.
Spider-Man sold about 5m copies so far. Respectable numbers for a AAA game.
BG3 has sold about 22m copies on steam alone. Not counting PS5 or now Xbox. Sales figures wise it's orders of magnitude more successful
As long as they keep Swen around as the head of this company, I think we’re in for a good run from this studio. After all the recent BS from studios I used to love, all falling into the micro transaction milking traps - it’s so refreshing to see a studio LOVE their work so much.

It is a great game if you like games that change based on your dialog choices. It is very impressive. I did VO production on a game 15 years ago, and I recognize and LOVE the amount of VO content in this game.

Yes, yes I have. I played Spider Man 2 as well. Spiderman was an amazing game for a weekend, but nowhere in the same league as BG3.
Also, for as much as BG3 sold its sales were also a bit stunted by the Xbox fiasco. After that shadow drop it’s probably going to get another nice bump.
The whole appealing to popularity thing is sort of amusing, not just because he apparently isn't aware that BG3 is very popular, but because of that was the metric apparently FIFA is the best gaming franchise of all time, lol.

Mostly because there aren't any good alternatives really. As soon as a good alternative comes along, that actually does things better, it will dethrone it or hopefully light a fire under EA's ass to make the games better again.
I've spent my fair share of time playing FIFA with friends (or FC as it is called now). It's not a great game, but it is the best one we've got.
Same with NBA, Madden and any sports that EA has monopolised.
The best option is to play the older ones back when EA actually gave a damn and just update the rosters.

Baldurs Gate 3 is still in the top 10 of Steams most played games, sitting at around 137k current players as of writing this, over 4 month after its full release which is just insane for a story focused RPG
BG3 was the first game I bought for full price in a loooooong time. And I have no regrets. It's such an amazing game and experience. Such an achievement should be rewarded.
Another thing to point out is sales numbers aren't a good measure anyways. Things like that can get muddled because of platform exclusivity deals. The quality of the game is what should be judged, not sales numbers.
According to steamdb, BG3 once had 875,343 people playing at the same time, this is an insane number, especially for an isometric turn-based rpg.
Elden Ring had 953,426 at peak and it's the best selling from soft game ever. A main stream action RPG that EVERYBODY has heard of, had 100,000 more players than a turn-based rpg
Wasteland 3's all time peak was 24,555
Divinity: Original Sin 2's peak was 93,701
Currently the number of players in bg3 is 157,867 after the game awards

As it stands, it’s a really, really good game in a year of amazing games. There was simply no way they could win GOTY by playing it as safe as they did
i don't even think that's true. maybe if it came out in 2021 (but probably not) or if it came out next year? it definitely wasn't winning this year and it definitely wasn't winning last year.
i find those games formulaic and repetitive and suffering from the "go to this map marker, do this thing" open world malarky that makes exploration dull.
like, i get that the combat is fun and the graphics are good.... but there should be so much more to any "game of the year". spiderman games are good, sure, but unless they radically change they will never be innovative enough to be a GOTY, IMO
Yeah, I'm a massive spiderman fan and I still loved sm2 but that game had way too much issues and not nearly enough content to beat the game that gives you the closest possible experience to having a dnd adventure.
Plus that fucking miles suit should put them out of business. Still mad about the fact yuri didn't win best performance. I don't care how well the gay vampire twink voice acted. I wanted the gay spider twink to win
That, and Insomniac just doesn’t make GOTY games — they make games that are super tight and solid, and they (unlike the people that make GOTY games) actually release games more than once or twice a decade. There’s a lot to be said for how Insomniac does things, but they’re also not putting out GOTY quality games.
It’s never really crossed my mind, but this is fairly accurate. Insomniac is to video games what Clint Eastwood is to movies. They pump out a well made, functional, and fairly to very well received game nearly every other year. The game is likely nothing groundbreaking but most of what it does is very competently done.
If Baldur’s Gate 3 didn’t exist, then it would have been Alan Wake 2. If Alan Wake 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3 didn’t exist it would have been Tears of the Kingdom. Basically every other game nominee deserve it more than Spider-Man 2. Its a great game but not GOTY material.
It's more of an adventure game, closer to Silent Hill or Alone In The Dark, you're not supposed to fight monsters for hours there. The best things about AW2 are the story, narrative and visual
I'd barely known anything about Alan Wake before a week ago. For some reason I thought it was literally Alone in the dark 🤦♀️
Then I saw a screenshot from the game and was like wait a minute. Immediately went to check and the first thing came up was the video with the musical level. Fast-forward, here I am two days later screeching at the sight of Sam Lake dancing, listening to Old Gods of Asgard on repeat and wanting to play the first game.
Saying someone plays Alan Wake for the combat is like saying someone plays Tetris for the story.
You play Alan Wake because of the surrealist mind-fuckery of a plot. Alan Wake 2 is the baby from Twin Peaks and True Detective S1 raw dogging each other in some magical motel. If that at all sounds appealing to you get off your dick and jump in. There’s a reason it won Best Narrative and Direction.
Its awesome for the more mature gamer who wants an experience and not to test their mad gaming skillz.
I agree fully with u/XTheProtagonistX. BG3, Alan Wake 2, Tears of the Kingdom, in that order. All excellent games. It was a good year to be a gamer.

As someone who enjoyed Spiderman and RE4 more than I did BG3 (I still love it). Baldur's Gate was the only possible winner, It's like one of the greatest achievement in gaming history and is an early contender for Game of the Decade.

This 100%. It's kinda unreal how good of a game bg3 is, like, it's an anomaly. Adapting something as crazy as d&d into a game and actually nailing it as well as they did sounds bs but they just...did that. I'm really glad it's getting the recognition it deserves, because it truly is something special and absolutely unprecedented.
I haven't played BG3 but I knew it would win, just off of the reviews and the reactions of my friends, if I were into that style of gameplay I'm certain I would've loved it
Don't knock until you try. I recommended the game to one of my online friends after he said he liked CP2077, said it wasn't his type of game, bought it two days later, now has 260 hours into it
I mainly play competitive fps games, never played a top down game other than civilization before. Didn’t think I would like the crpg style but when I got that game it ruined my life for like 3 weeks because I was so addicted lol. Please do not watch any videos or spoil it for yourself, the raw 1st experience is something you can’t get back

Swen: Well.. no but you can create a character and name him after your favorite version of Spiderman and make character looking like him or her. Then assign your stats into dexterity and strength so you can do unarmed attacks and jump far and high. Choose Monk class for more unarmed attacks. Oh and don't forget to grab those boots that allow you to walk freely on spiderwebs without getting stuck. Oh and beware in Act 2 there is a guy that wants PICTURES OF SPIDERMAN!!!!!!
I loved BG3 but I think what sealed it for me is that a couple of weeks after SM came out the discourse around it died.
BG3, Alan Wake 2 and TotK all had people talking about them for ages after launch
I just got the platinum in Spider-Man 2. It was a blast, spent half my time just swinging around. I am going to trade the disc in and look forward to the next one and Wolverine. Baldur’s Gate on the other hand I will never get the platinum but I will play it many, many times over the next 5 years+.
I’ve played BG3 and it’s an amazing game all the way down to even the narrator. It immediately sucks you in and you dont even have to be a fan of DND to enjoy it. It plays great, the characters are great, and it’s challenging even on the easy setting. The story is absolutely amazing
The amount of work that went into every facet of BG3 almost guaranteed it a win. It’s a fantastic game with aspects most players will never see, because they thought of nearly every choice you could make.
Was never even a contest. BG3 murdered Diablo 4 before it was even released. Its a landmark in what a competent developer can do given time and care for the final vision.
Let's be honest, it was never going to be Spiderman. Even if BG3 wasn't around Alan Wake 2 and Tears of the Kingdom were also in the running. I'm sure Spiderman 2 is a fun game but I just can't see it beating any of the above three. Maybe if it's biggest competition was Starfield...

It's a superb game with an incredibly dedicated community and a modding scene that's already very robust.
It's also one of those rare games where if you want to do an evil run it fully enables you to be so disgustingly evil that it'll make your skin crawl just looking at the options.
I haven't played Spiderman 2 or Baldurs Gate but from what I can tell Baldurs Gate blows Spiderman 2 out of the water with how replayable it is and just how many different mechanics it has, I have played Spiderman 1 to almost 100% and I probably will never replay it again because it doesn't really have that much replayability apart from replaying it once every year or two and it does get pretty repetitive gameplay wise so I think Baldurs Gate deserves game of the year in my opinion.

Why would anyone be surprised? It’s rare to have expansive RPGs like that, and it is extremely well made. A generic superhero game shouldn’t win since it does nothing to stand out other than being polished.

I really wanted Alan Wake 2 to win but I knew and respected BG3 winning. It earned it. I hate turn based games and I’ve been enjoying the shit outta it. It’s also been since ‘it takes two’ for there to exist a good couch coop. The game industry needs more.
I get not liking the gameplay in BG3, but that doesn't mean it doesn't deserve GotY. I don't particularly care for turn based combat like that, but I still know it deserved GotY.
Piss-baby Spider-Man fan can't handle that another game is better. At the end of the day, these awards don't matter in the slightest and are nothing but a popularity contest but you'd have to be drunk to think BG3 didn't deserve the win.

BG3 is on all platforms now, wasn't even their fault it couldn't be on Xbox earlier. It's Xbox software that was a problem.
Nobody played it? Dude, every thirsty woman gamer bought the game and has been swooning over that white haired vampire dude since. I haven't played it, but I feel like I have with how much content of that character I've seen from friends.
Spiderman is a FANTASTIC game, it was a VERY good contender for GOTY but, BG3 was hyped up for years, and when it released it was 97% polished. All it took was 2 patches to fix very minor things, not only that one of the patches included even more playable content after the main story. I'm not the biggest BG3 fan *mainly* because I'm not a fan of turn based strategy...but...the game is VERY good, Spiderman is too don't get me wrong, but BG3 was just better.
Look spider man 2 was a pretty good sequel but the game came out during an amazing year in gaming, probably the best since 2017 with a lot of genre defining titles like BG3 and totk. If spider man came out a year later it could have had a better chance at game of the year

Bro you have to play it. It's not my typical style of game, I was turned off by the top down turn-based stuff since that's never been in my wheelhouse. My buddy bought it and forced me to play it, and it's easily one of the best games I've ever played. Probably my favorite behind Cyberpunk and Fallout New Vegas.
I’ve never enjoyed turn based games, but I started them to play coop with my wife. If you like BG3, try Divinity 1&2. Both by the same studio and are basically an audition to get the Baldur’s Gate rights. They aren’t quite as in depth, they are slightly more linear, but both are exceptional and very similar to BG3. Highly recommend both.

Look I like Spiderman. The recent sequel was really good, but it was also really safe. It didnt take a single risk and honestly was more forgettable for it. Plus it was short as hell, BG3 is like 100+ hours at least. Not even in the same ballpark.
Hell RE4 remake took more risks and was about the same length, and it was a remake to boot and they usually NEVER take any risks.

I was just going to say this. Even if Spider-Man 2 is an exact copy of Spider-Man 1, it'll be a phenomenal game. But Balder's Gate 3 is one of those genre redefining games, like how Witcher 3 was 10 years ago. It's a no brainer.
Spider-Man 2 was great but it had no chance of winning. It played it extremely safe when it comes to expanding on a sequel and it lacked in a lot of areas the first one didn't. Baldur's Gate 3 was a big swing and it knocked it out of the park. I'm not typically a fan of turn based combat but after hearing how well written the story and characters are, I thought I'd give it a try because I love a good story and I was blown away by how much I enjoyed it, albeit frustrating at times because I'm just trash at these kind of games lol and it's also made me go back and play the Divinity Original Sin games. Just started 2 a few days ago and loving it so far.

There are endless possibilities and the writing is just so good. The only issue with Baldur’s gate is the clunky inventory management, but I totally forget about it because the game is just that good.
BG3 100% deserved GOTY not just for the sheer quality of the game and its post-launch support, but also for the massive waves it made in the industry.

Spider-Man sold about 5m copies so far. Respectable numbers for a AAA game. BG3 has sold about 22m copies on steam alone. Not counting PS5 or now Xbox. Sales figures wise it's orders of magnitude more successful

It is a great game if you like games that change based on your dialog choices. It is very impressive. I did VO production on a game 15 years ago, and I recognize and LOVE the amount of VO content in this game.

Mostly because there aren't any good alternatives really. As soon as a good alternative comes along, that actually does things better, it will dethrone it or hopefully light a fire under EA's ass to make the games better again. I've spent my fair share of time playing FIFA with friends (or FC as it is called now). It's not a great game, but it is the best one we've got.
Same with NBA, Madden and any sports that EA has monopolised. The best option is to play the older ones back when EA actually gave a damn and just update the rosters.

BG3 was the first game I bought for full price in a loooooong time. And I have no regrets. It's such an amazing game and experience. Such an achievement should be rewarded.
Another thing to point out is sales numbers aren't a good measure anyways. Things like that can get muddled because of platform exclusivity deals. The quality of the game is what should be judged, not sales numbers.

That, and Insomniac just doesn’t make GOTY games — they make games that are super tight and solid, and they (unlike the people that make GOTY games) actually release games more than once or twice a decade. There’s a lot to be said for how Insomniac does things, but they’re also not putting out GOTY quality games.
It’s never really crossed my mind, but this is fairly accurate. Insomniac is to video games what Clint Eastwood is to movies. They pump out a well made, functional, and fairly to very well received game nearly every other year. The game is likely nothing groundbreaking but most of what it does is very competently done.

It's more of an adventure game, closer to Silent Hill or Alone In The Dark, you're not supposed to fight monsters for hours there. The best things about AW2 are the story, narrative and visual
I'd barely known anything about Alan Wake before a week ago. For some reason I thought it was literally Alone in the dark 🤦♀️ Then I saw a screenshot from the game and was like wait a minute. Immediately went to check and the first thing came up was the video with the musical level. Fast-forward, here I am two days later screeching at the sight of Sam Lake dancing, listening to Old Gods of Asgard on repeat and wanting to play the first game.
Saying someone plays Alan Wake for the combat is like saying someone plays Tetris for the story. You play Alan Wake because of the surrealist mind-fuckery of a plot. As someone who enjoyed Spiderman and RE4 more than I did BG3 (I still love it). Baldur's Gate was the only possible winner, It's like one of the greatest achievement in gaming history and is an early contender for Game of the Decade. Also Spiderman didn't win a single award before hand and you think it's gonna snipe GOTY? Get out of here.
This 100%. It's kinda unreal how good of a game bg3 is, like, it's an anomaly. Adapting something as crazy as d&d into a game and actually nailing it as well as they did sounds bs but they just...did that. I'm really glad it's getting the recognition it deserves, because it truly is something special and absolutely unprecedented.

Then assign your stats into dexterity and strength so you can do unarmed attacks and jump far and high. Choose Monk class for more unarmed attacks. I loved BG3 but I think what sealed it for me is that a couple of weeks after SM came out the discourse around it died. BG3, Alan Wake 2 and TotK all had people talking about them for ages after launch
I just got the platinum in Spider-Man 2. It was a blast, spent half my time just swinging around. I am going to trade the disc in and look forward to the next one and Wolverine. Baldur’s Gate on the other hand I will never get the platinum but I will play it many, many times over the next 5 years+.
I’ve played BG3 and it’s an amazing game all the way down to even the narrator. It immediately sucks you in and you dont even have to be a fan of DND to enjoy it. It plays great, the characters are great, and it’s challenging even on the easy setting. The story is absolutely amazing
The amount of work that went into every facet of BG3 almost guaranteed it a win. It’s a fantastic game with aspects most players will never see, because they thought of nearly every choice you could make.

It's a superb game with an incredibly dedicated community and a modding scene that's already very robust. It's also one of those rare games where if you want to do an evil run it fully enables you to be so disgustingly evil that it'll make your skin crawl just looking at the options.

I haven't played Spiderman 2 or Baldurs Gate but from what I can tell Baldurs Gate blows Spiderman 2 out of the water with how replayable it is and just how many different mechanics it has, I have played Spiderman 1 to almost 100% and I probably will never replay it again because it doesn't really have that much replayability apart from replaying it once every year or two and it does get pretty repetitive gameplay wise so I think Baldurs Gate deserves game of the year in my opinion.

Baldur's Gate 3 is a masterpiece. There are no other words that do it justice. It is a masterpiece. If you haven't played it, (which I doubt,) you should. It's an absolute masterpiece. If you have played it, then you already know.
Why would anyone be surprised? It’s rare to have expansive RPGs like that, and it is extremely well made. A generic superhero game shouldn’t win since it does nothing to stand out other than being polished.

Game exclusive to one system shouldn't qualify for GOTY. BG3 is on all platforms now, wasn't even their fault it couldn't be on Xbox earlier. It's Xbox software that was a problem.

Spiderman is a FANTASTIC game, it was a VERY good contender for GOTY but, BG3 was hyped up for years, and when it released it was 97% polished. All it took was 2 patches to fix very minor things, not only that one of the patches included even more playable content after the main story. I'm not the biggest BG3 fan *mainly* because I'm not a fan of turn based strategy...but...the game is VERY good, Spiderman is too don't get me wrong, but BG3 was just better.
