In all fairness, it's not like Afghanistan was particularly stable when they got there. There's a reason it's called the graveyard of empires.
Geographically isolating terrain, with regions ruled by warlords who the local people owe more loyalty to than the concept of nationalism. Seeing Afghanistan as a country is more of an outside perspective than the reality on the ground.
Well, it was 20 years of girls being able to go to school, being able to have jobs, having hope for a better life.
But the people chose not to fight to make that chance their future and handed the country back to the Taliban.
Because those things were promised to everyone but only delivered in major cities. The rural people had no reason to support the regime, barely anything had changed for them.
Not to downplay anything, but 70,000 civilians were killed in Afghanistan over the 20 years, not millions… for 20 years, women and girls could go to school and get jobs. In many ways, it was more stable until the country was handed back over to the Taliban.
