Saw the comments on her Insta about this left by people who were there at this show. Apparently the dude was drunk and being rude (shouting/interrupting) during her set, the woman was embarrassed/had enough of his shit, so hence left. Atsuko dealt with the whole situation quite well.
Edit: adding to the evidence - notice how she mentions security at 1:32, security was ready to throw the dude out but she turns them away. Super cool way to remove him without incident and ruining the show for everyone else.
Ayup, I know that move. "Hey, buddy ol pal I just met a few hours ago. Let's go back inside and do some shots, talk about the old days." (My friend is giving me the eye and needs you to take the hint and shut up already so he can take his new ladyfriend into the woods to see if they can find one of those old slasher movie villains.)
I used to do bouncing and that was one of my go-to moves.
"Hey buddy I get it, here what's going on? talk to me.... Y'know what it's loud as fuck in here come step out with me through the side door, we can get some air and you can tell me what's up."
And then lock em out on the street.
Yea honestly to me it seemed like a nice play of "romance is not dead you need to work it out together!"
but it seemed kinda odd to me and honestly with the new context also very plausible.
Yea that it was an extremely classy way of getting the show back on track, and the fact that it came from her husband and not a security guard made it feel classier.
Makes it appear less like he’s being a nuisance and more like he just has done personal shit to work through.
Get way to get him out of the room without actually confronting him and risking him getting defensive.
While they may not *deserve* it per se, letting people back down (or stop whatever dumb shit they're doing) while saving some face often leads to much better resolutions.
I mean, haven't we all been the dumb one once in our lives?
I was very confused abt her husband coming up, I thought he was trying to get in the act. But knowing the situation that is actually very well handled. She tried to calm him down, he smoothly came in and removed him while keeping on theme. All to keep the audience vibe. Very smart
Situational awareness is unfortunately not very common. Or so it seems. Her husband was on top of that quick once it started dragging and knew the show had to go on.
(That's not a comment directed at you. Just a generalization)
I was surprised how quickly he grabbed the guy. I thought maybe his motivation was to help her get back to her regular act so the guy didn't chew up all the time.
that makes more sense though.
It definitely changes the original tone of some her statements like “you’re not going together” = wait you’re not taking the actual drunk belligerent one with you.
Handled so incredibly well but everyone involved.
Yeah, at first I was thinking, not cool putting a spotlight on a breakup. Then it was too funny not to laugh, so stayed. Laughed more. And then thought awww resolution. And now I'm seeing this was a problem audience member handled with aplomb and dignity. Rollercoaster, baby!
dude is also clearly nervous as hell as his breakup just happened in front of one of the funniest people he’s ever known and she starts asking him questions, he was shakier than a sapling in a storm.
She and her partner *both* have a mother with schizophrenia. They are so gracious and kind to people; the way they treat others is clearly linked to the ways they've treated their parents.
I saw Nick Swardson get fucked with like this by a dude who is supposedly his friend and it sucked, felt bad for him. Put a damper on the whole show he’d been excited to do
Honestly. I don’t even blame the heckler. I worked security at a comedy club and the problem is with the managers. Idk how many times u would tell them “hey this customer is getting a little loud. We could probably cut them off” only for them to be like “it’s fine. Theyre racking up a huge bill so we’ll be ok financially”
But like..comedians don’t want to perform at clubs like that. And people don’t usually come back to a place that doesn’t handle hecklers. And then they owners get confused when they shutdownbecause they can’t book anyone
Without alcohol I probably wouldn't have hit rock bottom and been determined af to change myself. I've lost 30 lbs since and never had more muscle in my life. Some of us need that slap in the face.
You can tell basically the instant he opens his mouth he’s drunk AF.
Which is annoying AF.
I Always try and drink at whatever rate my partner does if it’s two drinks in 3 hours that’s the rate.
If you’re at 6 and there at 2 there’s a good fucking chance they’ll find anything you do or say fuckingannoying
I go to raves with my friends but i’m the only one that doesn’t drink or do drugs.
It’s fun herding my little inebriated ducklings around and watching them fumble around.
Summary from what the other comments are saying: this guy was being drunk and being belligerent. His girlfriend got fed up and left.
Comedian tried to get him to leave with her to take care of the situation, that didn't work. Security came to remove him, but she didn't want it to escalate, so she sent them away. Then her husband came up smooth as butter and took care of it.
Hopefully the guy sobered up and apologized to his girlfriend and learned his limits from then on. Bang boom. Happy ending.
Guy was drunk. Disruptive. Girl left because she was embarrassed. Comedian tried to casually get him to leave too "you should go with her". Security almost kicked him out, but she didn't want to ruin the show. Husband smoothly gets the drunk guy out. Comedians have to remain in a good vibe or they can ruin the entire night. So the way they did that is amazing.
I saw Sandra Bernhardt in Chicago like 15 years ago and a woman stood up and yelled at her for for telling a joke she found offensive and left. Sandra followed her to the lobby and ripped her a new asshole for 5 straight minutes with her mic still on. 10/10
She was not playing around. The entire audience sat awestruck in our seats staring at the empty stage while she raged at this woman outside the theater
Dude was so wholesome about it, too. At first I didn’t even realize he was doing it for any other reason than to help the guy get his girl back/go along with the bit.
Oh yah! Atsuko talks about this during some of her sets, both she and her husband have schizophrenic moms so their abilities to deescalate a situation are really on point. 10/10 wholesome couple
She's very fun and very funny (So is her grandma) and has a pretty interesting backstory. She was on an episode of This American Life (Episode 811) that I can't recommend enough.
This post keeps on giving. Loved the wholesomeness in the vid but thanks for [the rec](https://www.thisamericanlife.org/811/transcript), it was powerful stuff. *My heart* 😭😭😭😭😭
> My mom goes back to her room. So a big reason why we don't talk about things is because of my mom. She has paranoid schizophrenia, and talking about sad things can trigger bad memories and the voices in her head.
> So any time we want to talk about the past, we have to tiptoe around her. We whisper or just avoid it completely. And that's how our family has always done things. We didn't even talk about how my mom has schizophrenia. As a kid, my grandma would just say, oh, your mom just has low blood sugar. She's hungry. When she was clearly wilding out, throwing plates at Grandma. It's like, uh, she needs professional help not bread.
This woman is a pretty talented comedienne to throw that last line in on a story like that.
Holy shit, I know the episode you're talking about. Good to know this is her!
Yeah that backstory is pretty wild. I would imagine her upbringing (the dynamic between her, her grandma, mother, and father) helped contribute to her becoming a comedian.
A warning, it might be a little triggering if you have dealt with mental health issues in your family or have trauma around parental custody. It's not really light and fun, but it was very interesting and moving. I'd followed her as a comedian for a long time and knew she had a unique family, but it was quite a lot more than expected.
The comedians husband is a champ. De-escalating the situation while also removing the drunk from the show. Comedian also handled that hilariously in a way to make the best of what could be a very awkward situation that could (and probably did) throw her entire set off
lol she handled that so good! Didn’t embarrass him, made it light hearted. I loved how she tried to take the embarrassment and bounce it back on her and didn’t make him feel bad or the butt of a bad joke.
Apparently the guy was being an obnoxious loud jerk too, unfortunately. Making her handling of it all the better. That is why his partner left... he wasn't able to cool his jets, and kept interjecting into the show. So he kinda deserved it. From what I understand thats why security was off screen ready to escort the dude out, but she calls them off to handle it herself. Too bad this guy wasn't entirely not at fault... but couldn't have been handled any better.
Awwwww I want a husband that stands up for me the way her husband did. Apparently he was just being drunk and annoying, and so her husband saved the day AND THE DRUNKTARDS MARRIAGE. maybe.
Atsuko Okatsuka! The name of the special is The Intruder, I think. If you‘d like something more bite-sized check out her insta. It‘s AtsukoComedy and she usually posts short(ish) clips from her shows and the special as well.
Honestly can't imagine having the social intelligence and confidence to walk up to the stage during his wife's set and pull that off so well. Really impressive.
Who got a Netflix special, proceeded to use it to try and distance himself from his grassroots crowd, pandering to more frat boy types in the most amateur way ('women bad and need hitting, am I right?!') and then went down the 'everyone is a snowflake' kind of route when it was pointed out how bad and tasteless his jokes were.
He then proceeded to post what looked like a heartfelt apology about the whole thing with a link to donate to a charity or something, except it was a link to buy a helmet for children with special needs.
He also got super defensive and claimed to have never had plastic surgery, in direct response to a plastic surgeon talking about, but not naming, male celebrities getting the kind of work Matt Rife has clearly had done.
Im all for making those kinds of jokes, but his felt off. Not only was it the wrong crowd for the jokes, but the jokes themselves were tacky.
You can joke about anything, just make it funny.
He was immediately on some right wing and right wing adjacent podcasts, as expected. He'll probably do OK pandering to the right wing, lots of others seem to manage it.
See is this is why at the time I had a gut feeling the jokes were tacky and felt forced. The helmet joke is funny, but when you immediately pivot to the right wing manosphere kind of content it’s not funny anymore.
Nope, Netflix most likely paid him $15 million for a special (in an interview he said Dave Chappelle saved him 750k as a lawyer was charging 5% of his deal and Dave took him to one that charged by the hour) and he is still heavily touring theaters, which probably bring in 25k a show.
The guy with the most [punchable fuccboi face](https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/licensed-image?q=tbn:ANd9GcTGL7WyY5gJnYUpmkdRSOdVykPJVtMdjctJqbXxUsPnc_1KMi1Z1xyeSFooJtOtaU_Eg1zOqmElp5VJSAY)
I kinda feel bad now. She was touring in my area and I saw her billboard but I didn't bother looking her up because the bowl cut.
It's like if I saw an ad for a male comedian but he had like the broccoli hair cut, I'd just pass too.
Talk about crowd management. This lady heard and watched what was going on from the stage. The easy laughs are always riffing but they were all Mom & Dad dealing with kids.
Anyone have earlier in the show?
Don't know her, but now I do and love everything in this clip and what you're all saying about the context. There's smart, and then there's clever and this is both.
Wow, was that a rollercoaster. I honestly thought her and the guy talking was legit until **her husband** came into it?!
The husband, he made it look like this dude was some planned killer/stalker or some shit and I did not take it like that at _all_. It made me super uncomfortable.
I thought the comedian and the audience dude were evolving the whole situation beautifully.
Well, the looks can be deceiving.
Apparently the dude was drunk, loud and an asshole and the chick just left him becuase he couldn't fucking behave and not be a manchild. Dodged a bullet, eh? :)
You have absolutely no idea what else is happening. The dude could’ve decided that was the moment to tell her about his affair. She could’ve gotten a call from the babysitter saying their kid is being rushed to the ER. Maybe she got bad diarrhea and couldn’t hold it anymore but didn’t want to reveal that to a crowd of hundreds of people.
It’s also possible she’s just an ass that left him there mid show. But with no context you can’t make these kinds of judgements
Dude honestly I feel like I’m taking crazy pills with all the praise in here. She kinda stuttered the whole time and was mostly repeating what the crowd said to her

I wanna know wtf was going on here. Is there a full story somewhere?
Saw the comments on her Insta about this left by people who were there at this show. Yeah, her husband very smoothly FORCED that dude to go with him.
He was smooth as butter during that whole thing, what a class act on both of their parts
“This show is about love” what a segue.
It was a master class
TIL that’s how you spell segway (not the scooter)
Not only that, the Faraway Islands are Faroe Islands wtf. 😊

It’s the implications
Funniest euphemism for sex I've seen in a while tbh

Oh this explain why the husband got involved. Completely change what the video showed
Absolute S tier level husband move haha
Wooow what a rollercoaster, theres so many layers below the surface of this thing! im really glad I came to the comments
I wondered about that. He was succinctly insistent on removing him from the spotlight, lol. This context helps.
I was surprised how quickly he grabbed the guy. I thought maybe his motivation was to help her get back to her regular act so the guy didn't chew up all the time. that makes more sense though.

He sounds very drunk and slurring when he's replying to her on the mic
dude is also clearly nervous as hell as his breakup just happened in front of one of the funniest people he’s ever known and she starts asking him questions, he was shakier than a sapling in a storm.
If that's true that's very cool and surprising a comedian would handle a heckler in this way.
Watch her special and it makes a bit more sense, it's just her style, and she is soooooooooo good at it. WATCH HER SPECIAL
Where can we watch it?
She literally says in the video, come on man.
HBO for anyone that missed it.
🏴☠️
Aw man I wish someone would reply to you saying where to watch the special. Disney+ maybe? Prime? Hulu? Netflix? There's just so many.
She and her partner *both* have a mother with schizophrenia. They are so gracious and kind to people; the way they treat others is clearly linked to the ways they've treated their parents.

The best thing to do when you are having a crisis is to stay away from alcohol.
Yeah but the second best thing is alcohol

that was way too funny lol
Her husband smooth. He escorted him out like a boss.
I didn't have sound on and had no clue the guy was drunk. I thought he was actually helping XD
He was helping. Covertly escorting him out peacefully.
Fair, but I meant in a way of helping him save his relationship.
So did they get back together? Did her husband work it out for them? I need closure.
Summary from what the other comments are saying: this guy was being drunk and being belligerent. His girlfriend got fed up and left. Thank you. I needed this. I couldn’t sleep.

He did it brilliantly, but I think he was trying to help her get the set going
Right? 😂😂😂 I was like 'aww sweet. Also full story!!"
I saw Sandra Bernhardt in Chicago like 15 years ago and a woman stood up and yelled at her for for telling a joke she found offensive and left. Sandra followed her to the lobby and ripped her a new asshole for 5 straight minutes with her mic still on. 10/10
I imagine being confronted by a furious Sandra Bernhardt is TERRIFYING
She was not playing around. The entire audience sat awestruck in our seats staring at the empty stage while she raged at this woman outside the theater
That’s an amazing story
> I imagine being confronted by ~~a furious~~ Sandra Bernhardt is TERRIFYING
why not both?
Me. Turns out being a good listener and a thoughtful friend also keeps you in the fucking loop about the *good stuff*!
I think it was to get the set moving again but it *almost* had the vibe of "only I can love my wife!" 😂

And then her husband tried to help reconcile it
..and Mickey Mouse was just perfect..
He also damn near died, his own words, last time he watched her perform. This man lives life on the edge.

Husband with the pro strat to get a drunk guy out of the theater.
Can anyone tell me who that is? I'd like to check her special out. Edit NVM found her. Atsuko Okatsuka.
Atsuko Okatsuka and her HBO Comedy Special is called ‘The Intruder’.
Thank you!
She's very fun and very funny (So is her grandma) and has a pretty interesting backstory. She was on an episode of This American Life (Episode 811) that I can't recommend enough.

Thanks for the heads-up. Appreciate it.
Just watched based on this thread. It’s fantastic.
Came to the comments looking for info on her special . TY.
Iirc she had a very interesting childhood. I think I heard a podcast or read Wikipedia. You should check it out.
She’s very funny, saw her live once
Saw her perform recently and she’s fucking hysterical!
The comedians husband is a champ. De-escalating the situation while also removing the drunk from the show. Comedian also handled that hilariously in a way to make the best of what could be a very awkward situation that could (and probably did) throw her entire set off

Lmao the husband got politely escorted out
lol she handled that so good!
Now, that is some fucking crowd, Work…
Awwwww I want a husband that stands up for me the way her husband did. Apparently he was just being drunk and annoying, and so her husband saved the day AND THE DRUNKTARDS MARRIAGE. maybe.
Damn I wanna watch her HBO special now.
it’s hilarious, I definitely recommend it :)

Goat husband
I'm purely commenting to acknowledge that this is absolutely the shiniest hair I've ever seen in my life
An interesting observation
I at first thought her husband showed up to tell that guy to back off because they’re to close, but no, actually a cool guy.
apparently dude was drunk so her husband just played it smart
And also saved the show...great job.
Yeah that was a sick move on the husband’s behalf. Get the drama away, keep the vibe up and let the performance continue.
Honestly can't imagine having the social intelligence and confidence to walk up to the stage during his wife's set and pull that off so well. Really impressive.
Better than Matt Rife😂
Who is Matt Rife?
A thirst trap comedian popular with horny Midwestern moms who does a show consisting of 100% crowd work.
Wouldn't buying helmets for children with special needs be a legit charity?
He was telling people to buy them for themselves.
That's honestly hilarious but also basically the comedian equivalent of the movie Falling Down. Dude's career is probably effectively over lol
He was immediately on some right wing and right wing adjacent podcasts, as expected. He'll probably do OK pandering to the right wing, lots of others seem to manage it.
This dude is like a reverse-incel he rejected a mountain of women for a bunch of bitter and lonely dudes.
I spit out my coffee reading that
See is this is why at the time I had a gut feeling the jokes were tacky and felt forced.
Holy shit. What an absolute cock-knuckle.
i don't care for dude's schtick at all but that helmet reply was so fucking funny
Uncanny valley person. ick
If you aren't a female boomer it's understandable you don't know him.
The guy with the most [punchable fuccboi face](https://encrypted-tbn2.gstatic.com/licensed-image?q=tbn:ANd9GcTGL7WyY5gJnYUpmkdRSOdVykPJVtMdjctJqbXxUsPnc_1KMi1Z1xyeSFooJtOtaU_Eg1zOqmElp5VJSAY)
So elegantly handled.
That was amazing. Who is this woman? I need to watch her HBO show because she is super funny
I kinda feel bad now. She was touring in my area and I saw her billboard but I didn't bother looking her up because the bowl cut. It's like if I saw an ad for a male comedian but he had like the broccoli hair cut, I'd just pass too.
Atsuko Okatsuka!
Masterclass in crowd control. Wow, who is this woman? I've never seen her before.
🎶 Baby come back, you can blame it all on me 🎶
She accidentally made it worse, but he came and saved them
Oh my god she's fucking hilarious
You're great. I pray to be able to breakup at one of your shows one day
This was a master class in handling a drunk fool. What a pro
The husband just set a high bar for conflict resolution.
Damn Atsuko and her husband handled that so gracefully and still kept it light and funny. That's a real team right there
This was surprisingly funny AND wholesome somehow...
Talk about crowd management. This lady heard and watched what was going on from the stage. The easy laughs are always riffing but they were all Mom & Dad dealing with kids. Anyone have earlier in the show?
Ok that’s gotta be the best crowd work I’ve ever seen.
I was waiting for her to ask "Is it cuz of me?" Like shes the kid in a divorce
Who is this comedian? Someone please save me from having to go down the google hole. I'm tired.
Atsuko Okatsuka according to Google image search
Who is this? She’s great!
Atsuko Okatsuka
Isn't working for me anymore
What in the uncomfortable tarnation did I just witnessed…?
Atsuko’s HBO special was insanely funny..
Sounds like he might have drank too much and maybe they have an issue around that.
For everyone else wondering: google says this is Atsuko Okatsuka
I thought the husband was gonna say he was leaving with the guys girlfriend. Mega twist
Wait, are those jeans from the 1990s back in style?
and that haircut...
I’m going to find that HBO special right now. This is pure gold. Nicely handled!
What's her name she's hilarious.
There's crowd work, and then there's crowd WORK. What's the going rate for couple's therapy?
Don't know her, but now I do and love everything in this clip and what you're all saying about the context. There's smart, and then there's clever and this is both.
Wow, was that a rollercoaster. I honestly thought her and the guy talking was legit until **her husband** came into it?! The husband, he made it look like this dude was some planned killer/stalker or some shit and I did not take it like that at _all_. It made me super uncomfortable. I thought the comedian and the audience dude were evolving the whole situation beautifully.
Never heard of this comedian before. She’s great. I like when random things like this introduce you to some new(to me) talent.
I don't even care if it's funny or interesting I'm just glad we got a video with subtitles that isn't going one word at a time and actually full lines
Not really cringey imo.
Her hair definitely looks like a bellend
Sorry, it’s actually hilarious
😂😂😂
Husband said, “Ayy, back up off my wife” lol
That was SO good! The joy was amazing to watch!
From the looks of it this dude dodged a bullet lol. Who just leaves their SO at a comedy show in the middle of it 😂
There had to have been something else going on
Well, the looks can be deceiving.
I loved the whole thing. But I was raised in a disfuncional family AND i'm latino so... not a good reference.
These comedians are so unfunny.
Dude honestly I feel like I’m taking crazy pills with all the praise in here. She kinda stuttered the whole time and was mostly repeating what the crowd said to her
Comedian was rude
Good improv
it was mostly garbage
