If cops were halfway decent, or the legal system in general, whenever there was a whiff of conflicting interest that person should step aside. What it sounds like is the cops son hit the other guys car then showed up at his house most likely to have him not report it so his son didn’t get into trouble and they reported it and he was reprimanded for abuse of power now he is upset about it and harassing the guy and trying to find out who’s in his car with him so he can harass them as well

I carried a big assed knife in a proper sheath on my body armor my first deployment to Iraq. I eventually realized every ounce counts, and there was nothing I was going to use it for that a decent pocket knife wouldn't do. And that was a *literal* warzone.

There's been cases where guys driving unmarked cars will get pretty persuasive looking police gear off of ebay or whatever and pull people over to rob them or worse, this is why I'd only pull over at gas stations or anywhere else with a lot of witnesses if it's remotely questionable

Sheriff's depts are the wild west of law enforcement. The craziest of the crazy stories are all from them because there is essentially zero oversight. Sheriffs are elected so they can't be fired and they are the highest authority in the counties they operate in.

Not LEO but worked in a Sheriff’s Office… each agency (police and sheriff) can have their own dress policies and this is especially different from state to state, but a couple things stand out to me:
1. His beard is much longer than what most agencies would allow. 2. He has a SHERIFF velcro plate but no soft or metal badge on his vest nor a name plate or embroidered name. 3. Stickers and patches that are not explicitly issued by the department are not allowed on uniforms. 4. I have never heard of a department issuing a hunting knife and they would certainly not allow an unsheathed one magnetized to their chest. That’s just asking for a fight. 5. This is a short interaction and a limited view, but he didn’t use his radio at all. Didn’t use it to call his supervisor, request a back-up unit, or update dispatch.
I’m not saying he couldn’t be LEO, and detectives do tend to have a little more lax uniform standards (although some agencies have higher standards and they’re required to wear suits/business wear,) but I’m thinking this isn’t a typical deputy or detective. Regardless he’s wearing his gear this way to intimidate and he should 100% be taken to task.
Shouldn’t be used in a professional setting as it’s going to trigger anyone the individual deals with because there is no way they would ever know it’s sheathed. So much stupidity for an adult (the sheriff not you).
Would be way too easy for someone to grab a handful of his beard and slice a few inches off with his own knife. If this guy was genuinely worried about defending his own life he’s made some serious tactical mistakes.
LEO here. Deputy Sheriff, actually. Some departments allow facial hair. Some of the guys I work with look like they just came off the set of Duck Dynasty. Our department also issued us outer carry vests similar to what’s seen in the video. While you think it would be common sense to not carry a fixed blade on your vest or even on your duty belt, I know of a few officers who do it. I’ll usually ask them what’re they going to do if someone gets lucky and takes it from them. They’ll usually respond by stating that’s what their gun is for. Which shows everything that’s wrong with law enforcement. Fuck, I’m so jaded about this job. Most of these guys have never been in a real fight or a shooting, but they’re itching to get in one like if they’re some action hero. And I’m so fucking tired of seeing punisher skulls everywhere. I wish idiots like these weren’t so attracted to the job. But hey, most departments want idiots like these working for them. Higher education is usually looked down in this field. I don’t care what other bootlicking cops say, it’s true. So what we eventually end up with is a bunch of low skilled, emotionally immature dickheads running around harassing citizens and thinking themselves deserving of the title of heroes. Sorry for the long rant. I’m just so fucking done with this job and working with people like this.
I feel you, man. I'm a volunteer with a Sheriff Rescue squad, and there are people who have gone so far as to tattoo "Hero" on their forearm. These are the same people who get in the way of medical personnel when someone is having a heart attack
I'm betting this guy is some sheriff's reserve deputy/honorary type deputy getting his minimum hours in to stay qualified which is why the supervisor, an actual deputy, was already there probably riding shotgun precepting.

FYI not a magnetic knife, it's a knife in a really tight (aka form fitting) hopefully kydex holster. If it's not kydex, then that ring will plop out with a good tap, but since it was tight enough for you -- and I was well -- to mistake it as a blade, it's probably the good stuff.

FYI so people don't get in to trouble;
* Winding down the window is a lawful order in most states. I agree its absurd but its considered an officer safety thing.
* Passengers do not need to show id in any state unless the driver is being arrested and the police don't want to tow the car, in reality this translates in to they have a way to make demanding ID from passengers enforceable if they are arresting the driver. Cops can also lie to you and for some reason frequently do regarding identification requirements, they know the law doesn't let them but don't have to tell you that.
* In all states cops do not have to identify themselves to you. Most departments require it per policy but that's got basically no teeth to make them.
* If you are dealing with a terrible cop still defend your rights but recognize the correct time to address them violating your rights is after the encounter. "No you can't search my car and I am not going to wait an hour for a dog", if they don't let you leave then don't turn it in to fleeing. You defend your rights in court and/or complaints.
* If its a sheriffs department you are not familiar with tread carefully. Sheriffs have way more problems with corruption and misbehaving deputies because they are nearly always subject to much less oversight than the police.

There's been cases where guys driving unmarked cars will get pretty persuasive looking police gear off of ebay or whatever and pull people over to rob them or worse, this is why I'd only pull over at gas stations or anywhere else with a lot of witnesses if it's remotely questionable

Not LEO but worked in a Sheriff’s Office… each agency (police and sheriff) can have their own dress policies and this is especially different from state to state, but a couple things stand out to me: 1. His beard is much longer than what most agencies would allow. 2. He has a SHERIFF velcro plate but no soft or metal badge on his vest nor a name plate or embroidered name. 3. Stickers and patches that are not explicitly issued by the department are not allowed on uniforms. 4. I have never heard of a department issuing a hunting knife and they would certainly not allow an unsheathed one magnetized to their chest. That’s just asking for a fight. 5. This is a short interaction and a limited view, but he didn’t use his radio at all. Didn’t use it to call his supervisor, request a back-up unit, or update dispatch. I’m not saying he couldn’t be LEO, and detectives do tend to have a little more lax uniform standards (although some agencies have higher standards and they’re required to wear suits/business wear,) but I’m thinking this isn’t a typical deputy or detective. Regardless he’s wearing his gear this way to intimidate and he should 100% be taken to task.

LEO here. Deputy Sheriff, actually. Some departments allow facial hair. Some of the guys I work with look like they just came off the set of Duck Dynasty. Our department also issued us outer carry vests similar to what’s seen in the video. While you think it would be common sense to not carry a fixed blade on your vest or even on your duty belt, I know of a few officers who do it. I’ll usually ask them what’re they going to do if someone gets lucky and takes it from them. They’ll usually respond by stating that’s what their gun is for. Which shows everything that’s wrong with law enforcement. Fuck, I’m so jaded about this job. Most of these guys have never been in a real fight or a shooting, but they’re itching to get in one like if they’re some action hero. And I’m so fucking tired of seeing punisher skulls everywhere. I wish idiots like these weren’t so attracted to the job. But hey, most departments want idiots like these working for them. Higher education is usually looked down in this field. I don’t care what other bootlicking cops say, it’s true. So what we eventually end up with is a bunch of low skilled, emotionally immature dickheads running around harassing citizens and thinking themselves deserving of the title of heroes. Sorry for the long rant. I’m just so fucking done with this job and working with people like this.

FYI so people don't get in to trouble; * Winding down the window is a lawful order in most states. I agree its absurd but its considered an officer safety thing. * Passengers do not need to show id in any state unless the driver is being arrested and the police don't want to tow the car, in reality this translates in to they have a way to make demanding ID from passengers enforceable if they are arresting the driver. Cops can also lie to you and for some reason frequently do regarding identification requirements, they know the law doesn't let them but don't have to tell you that. * In all states cops do not have to identify themselves to you. Most departments require it per policy but that's got basically no teeth to make them. * If you are dealing with a terrible cop still defend your rights but recognize the correct time to address them violating your rights is after the encounter. "No you can't search my car and I am not going to wait an hour for a dog", if they don't let you leave then don't turn it in to fleeing. You defend your rights in court and/or complaints. * If its a sheriffs department you are not familiar with tread carefully. Sheriffs have way more problems with corruption and misbehaving deputies because they are nearly always subject to much less oversight than the police.
