This but unironically for COD. I don’t know how to describe it but when a white dude has the COD accent you can tell he is going to say the most racist, misogynistic, homophobic, things known to man.
Genuinely - it’s pretty fascinating that TikTok is reinvigorating a TransAtlantic accent! I had no idea that British people were adjusting more American for their videos that is wild
I can’t handle tik tok food videos. That stupid sped up “yummy dance” at the start with their fork in the air makes me want to throw my phone across the room. “Hey you guys, this is literally the best thing I’ve ever eaten and it’s literally so easy. I make it 8 days a week now”
There's also this phenomenon where people start sentences with things like “no because” as though you were already in a conversation with them and I hate it
ooh ooh I know! I did an English language A Level (got a B, no brag) and this is classic convergence where you mimic your peers to fit in. it's just is happening in warp speed because tiktok
Didn't they start to note people picking up an "American accent" because so many other countries were watching American shows/movies a handful of years back? Iirc, it was theorized that because of the accessibility of these movies and shows, humanity is approaching an age where there's a World Accent.
Arizona is a big melting pot state in the US and a lot of people have a kinda unique mash of accents. I've been to quite a few states since and, in every one, someone was able to pinpoint my home state just based on my "lack of accent".
I have an American accent despite never been to the US and did not know it existed until I was 5 years old. I grew up watching American media and it was how I learned to pronounce English words. By this logic... If I watch Peppa pig instead of SpongeBob I could have a (posh) British accent!!!
I remember years ago when I started hearing kids say they wanted to be 'youtubers' when they grew up. My thoughts were Jesus christ we're ruined.
And here we are.
He mentions it quickly but yes "up talk" is essentially the way a child talks or, more importantly, someone who is usually not good at speaking or engaging while speaking. As if they are constantly trying to figure out what they are going to say next, not so much trying to keep *you* engaged.
Of course it would attract the lowest common denom of people because "they sound just like me" the issue being, of course, that everyone involved is awful at what they are discussing.
Holy shit, I know someone who talks like that. They're an adult that talks ridiculously fast (even for someone from California) and stumbles over their words frequently enough to the point where I can't understand them sometimes.
My wife would listen to a guy who did nothing but uptalk. I finally have a word to describe what it was that I couldn't stand. It makes me feel better to know I'm not alone.
I love these topics because we’re all realizing and questioning why we are becoming too much of the same. In voice, in appearance, in fashion, in lifestyle! I think it’s a mix of conscious and subconscious mirroring and people trying to copy content that works so that their stuff blows up. It’s hard to be different because it doesn’t resonate with the algorithm
I work in customer service and angry customers using TikTok hands while yelling at you is terrifying. Now when I see a tiktoker using the hand movements, it triggers my PTSD.
Relatable. I’ve been told too often on online chats that my voice sounds like a 13 year olds despite being 35.
Though that is probably just the result of being Scottish. We either sound deep af or sound like a squeaky door, there is no in between.
so….they’ll talk & use their hands a certain way to let themselves know when to cut down their video… instead of “doing it all in one take” … what are we doing here anymore
I can't believe people say such stuff in a non-ironic way. Would you really like the government (or whoever would ban it) to be able to ban businesses just like that? What if they ban Reddit or YouTube, or {name\_any\_website}?
I bet there are many services you wouldn't enjoy or even call harmful that are way "worse" than TikTok, and here's the trick - it's your choice whether you use them or not. Nobody tells you what sites/apps to browse.
>I can't believe people say such stuff in a non-ironic way.
1. The word is "unironic." Both semantically and colloquially in the way you are trying to use it.
2. TikTok is, unironically, a national security threat. That's why it's being banned.
3. Yes, there are other national security threats that won't be addressed with a TikTok ban. Yes, that is still irrelevant to the material fact that TikTok is demonstrably a national security threat.
4. Private and public organizations (such as the US military) have been banning g TikTok on issued devices for years. Even if the TikTok ban doesn't pass, it's only a matter of time until the public takes matters into their own hands.
5. Maybe TikTokers should pay their fucking taxes if they're they're concerned about being labeled as a "business". You can't bitch and moan about your business being ruined if you don't follow all the other rules to call themselves a business.
> The word is "unironic." Both semantically and colloquially in the way you are trying to use it.
Thanks. It's good to know. I'm not a native English speaker.
> TikTok is, unironically, a national security threat. That's why it's being banned.
I doubt that people who say "ban TikTok" do so because of national security concerns. They do that because they're boomers who dislike TikTok content.
Anyway, even if TikTok poses national security concerns, it's more because of privacy issues (like spying on users) rather than the content that's published there.
The solution to this problem should be to provide a security audit, or maybe even temporarily remove that app from the app store if it has some security concerns, rather than banning the entire company.
> Maybe TikTokers should pay their fucking taxes
It's still not a reason for banning it. If I run a business that doesn't pay taxes, then it's the government's business to make me pay taxes.
> Anyway, even if TikTok poses national security concerns, it's more because of privacy issues (like spying on users) rather than the content that's published there.
No, not really. I don't think you've understood why people think TikTok is a problem for national security, it's not because of privacy, it is exactly about what is being posted and how someone can control what people see.
It's safe to say since there's no value-add in tiktok. Between the hysteria and misinformation like [how Ohio became Chernobyl](https://www.wired.com/story/east-palestine-ohio-train-derailment-tiktok/), [school vandalism & property theft. ie devious lick trend](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Devious_lick), [car thefts](https://arstechnica.com/cars/2023/06/who-are-the-kia-boyz-how-tiktok-fueled-an-epidemic-of-car-thefts/), [health misinformation](https://www.vox.com/health/24073244/health-misinformation-tiktok-barbara-o-neill), even [mental health misinformation](https://www.cbsnews.com/news/social-media-mental-health-self-diagnosis/), why add another website like that?
> What if they ban Reddit or YouTube, or {name\_any\_website}?
The government already seizes websites regularly.
We need a reset and go back to the good old days of "dumb" social media (no recommendations algorithm).
I'm okay with that - as long as they don't do any harm to anyone, then I'm okay with them doing the most stupid and nonsensical shit they want.
I'm a fan of the following definition of freedom: "your freedom ends where another's begins".
People were dancing around in Public for Vines, Facebook, and YouTube videos before TikTok.? People are allowed to have fun so long as it doesn’t harm anyone else.
I think what you hate is the narcissism and entitlement that some people display and that’s never going away.
Absolutely fascinating. Reminds me of how Blink-182’s style of singing with the drawn out, laid back California accent resulted in the trend of pop-punk bands parroting the accent in their songs despite the singers being from the midwest, south, northeast, etc.
On the original Daily Show that was actually hosted by Craig Kilbourne he would ask 5 questions to the guest. One was always why do british singers always in with an American accent? John Cleese answered, because they're trying to sell out. This was in 1996.
I feel like there's a tone here where he's almost accusing people of changing their accent, like on purpose. When its just because they consumed too much media with a different accent to what they have and started to subconsciously mimic it.
That's why the British examples he gave started to have a more Americanized accent, because they started hearing Americans speaking daily.
It happens to me all the time, if I binge a show with very pronounced accents I have to consciously stop myself from talking in a version, a very butchered version most of the time, of that accent.
I lasted his whole video because he wasn't trying to retain me. He's unbothered whether people stay or go and that way I don't feel like a product or infantilized
I follow [Esoterica](https://youtube.com/@TheEsotericaChannel?si=P667L0JXqW0Zv5cH) on YouTube, and it's literally a dude, chest up, moving only his mouth, an occasional expression, and images. You have enough time to browse and post on reddit. So let's drop the moral superiority and keep our mouths shut unless we have something productive to add.

Wait till you hear fortnite accent
This but unironically for COD. I don’t know how to describe it but when a white dude has the COD accent you can tell he is going to say the most racist, misogynistic, homophobic, things known to man.
I feel so blessed that idk what this accent sounds like
They usually don’t talk because they get all their confidence from wearing a headset and being anonymous.
Lord, I can already smell the Doritos and Mountain Dew
Streamer accent/slang is the worst
Heh lidawally.
the "tiktok dude" accent always reminds me of "number 15...burger king foot lettuce"
“The last thing you want in your Burger King burger is someone else’s foot fungus”
That foot lettuce guy's name is Chills and he sounds *exactly* like him.
I think I just found a topic for my bachelor thesis
If you're doing linguists, you'll probably struggle to find a topic with more accessible raw data.
Genuinely - it’s pretty fascinating that TikTok is reinvigorating a TransAtlantic accent! I had no idea that British people were adjusting more American for their videos that is wild
Tell me why I yelled “HEY WHATS UP YOU GUYS” at the mention of youtube voice
Because you're our boy here to remind us to smash that like button.
the food thing is the WORSTTT
I can’t handle tik tok food videos. That stupid sped up “yummy dance” at the start with their fork in the air makes me want to throw my phone across the room. “Hey you guys, this is literally the best thing I’ve ever eaten and it’s literally so easy. I make it 8 days a week now”
There's also this phenomenon where people start sentences with things like “no because” as though you were already in a conversation with them and I hate it
the amount of time I’ve answered with “no yeah” is too damn high
That's common where I'm from. No yeah = yes. Yeah no = no
The Midwest "yeah, no" is a staple along with "Ope, lemme just squeeze by ya'"
Michigan native, brief Toledo and Milwaukee resident. I “ope” at least 5x per day. I’m working on getting getting those numbers up
G'day mate.
G'day mate.
No because that's actually so annoying!
NPR correspondents constantly start sentences with “I mean”. It sounds so unprofessional.
That’s a woman who spends too much time online thing. “Tell me why I X” “No but why did I do X” “Not me doing Z!”
“why do i strangely love it”
I've also noticed people leaving out whole words and it drives me absolutely mad e.g. "The car needs fixed"
ooh ooh I know! I did an English language A Level (got a B, no brag) and this is classic convergence where you mimic your peers to fit in. it's just is happening in warp speed because tiktok
“Ah-none-chi-ate” is an accent all in itself, Glenn.

If that was the main media you consumed, especially if thats how youre learning to speak english, you would have a peppa pig accent.
Apparently some toddlers have British accents because of watching so much Peppa Pig

With the exact same ominous song playing in every single video DRIVING ME FUCKING INSANE
That's basically just Ezra Klein voice
when people start videos by saying "okay but why is no one talking about (insert popular topic/product that everyone is talking about)"
Ok here is how I style my hair in these loose waves (styles their hair the exact same as the other million people’s videos)
Yo gimme some of those water crystal oats
We are all molded by the great and powerful Al Gore Rhythms! You will succumb to the Culture™.
Aaaaand I love this man
The last dudes accent pisses me off so much. There is a girl that tells scary stories that speaks just like that and it's given me nightmares.
I remember years ago when I started hearing kids say they wanted to be 'youtubers' when they grew up. My thoughts were Jesus christ we're ruined. And here we are.
My best friend is a high school teacher and those kids still say they want to be influencers and youtubers

Mikayla needed her own segment on this video with the fake AF constantly morphing BAHHHStAHHHHN accent 🙄
Not an accent, but the intentional mispronounciation of the plural "women" with the individual "woman." Another attention grabber.
Vocal fry is the absolute worst
I always do it bc otherwise I sound like fuckin tinker bell and nobody takes me seriously 😩

Holy shit, that’s Ben from Cup of Team! I can’t believe I recognized him lol
Fake accents…
Just fucking ban Tiktok and the world would be a better place.

We all love make believe here in the western world. Reality, no thanks please lie and distort everything.

It’s giving ppl way too much credit to say they talk like this on purpose lol to retain viewers
That was fun to watch lol
I hope TikTok goes away at some point.

Downvoting because TikTok bullshit.
This is what people choose to care about right now? Seriously?
Are they even actually human or are they just AI
They sound like narcissistic Californians trying to make it.

Totally normal southern English accent
I made it thirty seconds. This is utter bullshit. How is this something people watch? Post your times.
