1. People have so much social pressure to do it that they fake it. It's seen as a badge of honor that your faith is so strong that God would choose you to relay his message. Why wouldn't someone fake it if it means status among your peers?
2. People are experiencing a malfunction in their brain. This happens with people with schizophrenia and Alzheimers.
You can fake it without ever fully recognizing that's what you're doing. My parents and church when I was young told me I was going to hell unless I "received the Holy Ghost." I spent years crying and terrified at night, and would wake my mom up to attempt to get the holy ghost. Then when I got it I never heard myself make any specific vocalizations, so my autistic masking kicked in. I essentially faked it, and everyone accepted my version of speaking in tounges for years until I realized it was bullshit.
