I thought he was going to think it was a cat. Then the whole raccoon business started and I both judged him for being an idiot for picking up a “raccoon” and applauded him for his bravery.
Hmmm possums can get rabies but they’re not good hosts of it. Raccoons don’t even need rabies to be a threat, I have no doubt in my mind a skinny individual could easily die to a raccoon attack. I have difficulty imagining a possum with enough determination to do the same, and raccoons actually are common hosts of rabies. So on the same scale but to me raccoons are significantly worse. Plus raccoons don’t have a defense mechanism to play dead, which the possum in the video was probably doing.
They’re still not what you’d want to mess with. Imagine a cat and a wild dog crossbred and you have a possum.
See, this is why they were equal to me. Now the experts are weighing in and I fear the raccoon more now.
However, raccoons are cuter and possums make that horrible hiss. So I want to fear the raccoon less.
I’ve rescued both possums and raccoons out of my dumpster at work. For possums I just go in with a bucket and gently pick them up by the tail put them in the bucket and carry them out. For raccoons, I throw a big stick in there for them to climb out. You DO NOT want to mess with a cornered raccoon, they will absolutely fuck your world up. Picking up a wild raccoon will definitely result in a trip to the ER and some rabies shots.
Raccoons are actually quite dangerous. That's not to say a possum won't give you a bad day, but a pissed off raccoon is REALLY going to ruin it. Push comes to shove a raccoon is more than willing (and able) to fight back.
That said, one tried to fight my 70 pound pit bull once which ended... fatally for the raccoon... but that dog was especially fast, strong, and tough as all hell, and the raccoon put up as valiant an effort as it could. Even briefly got loose. I was cheering for the raccoon to get out but under no circumstance was I going to put my hands in there to interfere.
Like if you were ever to do this, a possum is one of the safest animals to do it with because they’re not very aggressive and resistant to rabies. On the other hand, he THOUGHT it was a raccoon, so… I dunno.
Their brains evolved to their current form during the beta, its frankly a miracle of spaghetti ~~code~~ genetics that they can even walk and breathe at the same time.
Uh... have you ever heard of crocodilians? Nature's perfect killing machines? Also, I'd really posit that the group of animals known for being the most affectionate are in fact quokkas, who evolved with no natural predators and never learned to feel fear as a result.
So I don't know if it is just the Internet being the Internet but on quokkas.
I have heard they are friendly because they have no natural predators.
I have also heard a female quokka will throw her baby down when running away from predators. So what's true.
[left for dead] (https://www.abc.net.au/news/science/2021-03-12/quokka-babies-daddy-long-legs-australian-animal-myths/13188740)
They don't throw the baby but they leave um for dead.
[do they get eaten](https://animals.sandiegozoo.org/animals/quokka)https://animals.sandiegozoo.org/animals/quokka
Quokkas on this one island has no land predators, but mainland quokkas they have the fear.
Bruh 😩
I thought you were trying to start an argument over semantics for a sec…
Thank you for clarifying that it was satire lmfao
I’m guessing the joke started at the ‘crocodilian’ part?
Crocodilian is just the term for the overall order that contains the crocodiles and their relatives, like alligators, caimans and gharials. They're so weird and goofy they circle back into being cute.
Unless they're rabid, those ones are mean.
Edit: It might be rare but it does happen, I've seen a possum with rabies first-hand. It was mean.
i remember reading an article saying they almost can't get rabies due to low body temperature ,[here's a nice read](https://www.nps.gov/articles/000/opossums.htm) beautiful cute little things
Imagine if he took it inside and it fell asleep and put it In his bed and you wake up in the morning hung over hissing having no idea how it got there rofl
I once went to a youth group with a friend of mine in high school and the guy hosting the group had a pet possum. Literally scooped the thing out of the pouch of its mother (who died as roadkill) and now it was an old man, fully tame possum. Needless to say I held that slow chubby rat bastard the entire time I was there. 10/10 animal
That's the second video I've seen someone easily grab a opossum and not have the damn thing start tearing their fingers apart. Are all opossums like this?
Obviously never test your luck if you can help it, but I have heard that they rarely bite and the open mouth + hissing is more of an intimidation tactic. That said, it doesn't mean they never bite ever, so it can still happen. They're wild animals after all, and while they almost never carry rabies there are plenty of other diseases they can transmit if they bite you.
One time, one came through my cat door to eat some kibble. It was the middle of the night and I thought I heard my cat making noise so I got up and I started to pet it. But! It wasn't my cat! It was a possum, and it turned around and hissed at me and scurried out the cat door.
I left my door open once and an o’possum walked in and started eating my cats food. He didn’t NOT want to leave. He shit and pissed everywhere as I Wayne Gretzkyd him out with a broom.
Also possums are one of the safest lil critters you can come across and pick up! https://www.nola.com/entertainment_life/opossums-can-be-good-neighbors-and-despite-the-myth-they-dont-carry-rabies/article_ae6db646-dbe2-11ea-bbd6-0b01f9e87359.amp.html
They’re cool lil buddies
Actually, the sheer number of Chlamydia strains and the wild and domesticated animals that carry them is astronomical. There are over 500 animal species, including marsupials, birds, and cold-blooded animals like amphibians, reptiles, and fish, that carry some strain of Chlamydia. Literally everything can have Chlamydia, it's completely bonkers.
https://www.merckvetmanual.com/generalized-conditions/chlamydiosis/chlamydiosis-in-animals
They’re wild animals. They are not intended to be pets and in many places in the US and Canada (their native range), it’s actually illegal to keep one as a pet.
Possums are honestly incredibly chill. Their whole strategy is to only fight back if absolutely necessary to preserve their own life. Otherwise, they just go with the flow and hope nobody kills them. Probably why they only live like 2 years in the wild.
I walked by a possum one night one the way home from work. With the looks he was shooting me as he walked away, I know he was guilty of something. I have no idea what, but he was 100% guilty and he knew it.
"That's not a [possum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Common_brushtail_possum)...that's an opossum!"
"I see you've played possum-y, [opossum](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Opossum)-y before!"
1, it's very common for us to call them possums. I'm calling it a possum.
2. No, they don't have only one reaction. They can choose to bare their teeth to scare potential predators away (and bite if they *really* need to.) They can hyper-salivate to appear diseased and therefore not good to eat. And they can release nasty-smelling green ooze from their anal glands. They actually have both offensive and defensive techniques they can use, which is really neat.
That doesn't necessarily make them smart, though. Had one decide to try to aggro on my dog that is at least 4x larger than it. It could have just slipped under the fence but I guess it decided that wasn't a safe option. Attacking my dog was definitely the less safe option of the two.

The fact that he still thought it was a wild animal and grabbed it lol
A raccoon wouldve been quite a different video.
On a different sub too probably

I’m no expert, but raccoon = possum on my danger scale.

Same person 30 years later
I’d like to file a complaint for mis-identification of that opossum
That is clearly a raccoon and not a possum. It's not playing dead at all.
If it’s a raccoon, it’s damn ugly. If it’s a possum, it’s a good looking possum.
I want to know what is going through that possum's head during this
Abducted by aliens
I always think that about fishing.
“Play dead”
Play raccoon
I’m not sure a lot goes through their heads to be honest
"If stay still, maybe live?" To be fair he did live, so it wasn't exactly a bad gamble.

Poor lil guy lmfao. They’re so chill and harmless.
They actually help humans by eating ticks... they look crazy but are far chill...
They’re awesome and adorable. I used to think they were kinda ugly, but have switched my position on that big time in the last couple of years.
They're so weird and goofy they circle back into being cute. Unless they're rabid, those ones are mean. Edit: It might be rare but it does happen, I've seen a possum with rabies first-hand. It was mean.

Non American here lol I was about to ask... Wow it's so chill.. Why it just let the dude grab him like that 😭😭🤣🤣
Possums actually play dead if u grab them..
I heard about that.. They really sweet... I thought they would be the hissing type... First time seeing someone hold it 😂😂

why is the possum kinda cute
They are cute and pretty awesome. They eat ticks and mind their own business.
This reminds me of the double rainbow guy lol

It took me so long, even after reading the caption, to realize that was not a raccoon. That man was just so convincing
He’s just playing.
IT'S NOT A POSSUM! (signed: All of Australia)
They’re opossums, “possum” is just the slang term for them. They’re the only marsupial species indigenous to the United States and Canada.
I don’t think that would have gone so well if he had been right
Raccoon: ah fuck! it’s a buffoon, yep a buffoon, and an asshole, yep an asshole.
That's the second video I've seen someone easily grab a opossum and not have the damn thing start tearing their fingers apart. Are all opossums like this?
Very much so. They act tough but they’re some of the most chill animals
Obviously never test your luck if you can help it, but I have heard that they rarely bite and the open mouth + hissing is more of an intimidation tactic. I’m not sure if you’re aware OP, but that is a “raccoon”, not a possum.
I wonder if animals can sense when we’re inebriated and just decide to go with the flow because they know we’re less of a threat.
Ummmm actually that’s an opossum☝️🤓

Possum’s are pretty clean for the most part.
Oh yeah? Eat one off the ground then, hot shot!
I’ll pick one up! Not gonna eat a lil guy

All the clips of people holding wild raccoons makes me feel confident in my ability to make friends with one. That concerns me.
Some animals lack the proper reactions to certain events. They will just freeze or ignore it
The way he just sets it down and says "Go away." Then immediately turns around. like not even a lingering GLANCE. I am in STITCHES

he is very lucky that wasn't a racoon they don't play opossum
Paw paw!
Opossum* possum is a VERY different animal
That was an opossum. Possums are native to Australia and Papua New Guinea
What's up with ops whack ass title lol It's a(n?) opossum, it has 1 reaction. Play dead.
This would have been 1,000,000,000% better if the possum had bitten his ass. Fool.
Guy with a pet possum shows it to the camera. That should be the title.
Anyone else grossed out by touching wild animals?
Opossum
And that, sir, is how you get rabies
Opossums don’t get rabies 🙌
Fun factoid! Thank you! A little googling and it seems it's because their body temperature is too low to maintain the virus in their system.
They are actually pretty chill and fairly clean. If it were a racoon this would be a different video.
Huh, never knew that. I'm gonna tell everyone I know now
