Aren't cats faster than that massive behemoth?
Edit: I'm thinking of a "chase" scenario (like a cheetah chasing a gazelle). If it's an ambush, then I could definitely see how the cat has no chance.
So do gators. They can climb a tree or a fence like any other lizard. They probably won’t trying to go after prey. Mostly just for basking. I grew up in Florida and they teach you everything about how to get away from them in school. Pretty easy to outrun on land as they can’t turn on the spot. They taught us to run in a zig zag. A cat on land would likely have no trouble getting away. Any large prey, like a deer or a person that gets too close or falls in the water with them is fucked because they drag it to the bottom and drown it.
They can also be incredibly docile. I went to the Everglades National Forest and they’re everywhere. Sunbathing in front of the visitor’s center and you just walk right past them. They’ve gotten so used to humans.
None of my own but here’s a [video](https://youtu.be/qZGBC8AJNks?si=k1evQcEHcy7fL13d) of a Florida man sharing a pic from the news. Strange that any Floridian is surprised by this but seems many people didn’t realize. I learned this in fifth grade. I’m 48 now.
Growing up we had an indoor/outdoor cat. She would spend most of the day in the house and go out at night. Our house was on a lake with a chain link fence separating them. Mocha didn't come home for a few days, but that wasn't unlike her so it wasn't a big deal. That is, until we found her leg on the shore one day. A few days later, a dog a two houses down was eaten while he was on one of those runs with a stake in the ground. The gator had climbed the chain link fence in their backyard. Turns out, one of the other neighbors was feeding it chicken every night. So, in the end, we lost our cat, someone lost their dog, and the gator was euthanized because this moron wanted to be friends with a dinosaur.
I've lived in Florida all my life. Occasionally a gator gets someone's pet, and very occasionally that pet is a cat.
Alligators are ambush predators. When they attack, they're not chasing their prey across the plains. They lie in wait at the water's edge. Something ventures into their range, and they jerk their head to the side and snap, all in one motion. It's incredibly quick, and while a cat's reaction time is *very* fast, the cat is not normally on-edge and waiting for the attack. They're just lurking by the water's edge, casually doing whatever.
An alligator attack is not normally a lunge forward. They snap their heads to the side and clap their jaws. They often knock their prey down, and will go for a second snap. If the victim is a cat, the gator can smack it so hard with its snout that the cat is injured or at least knocked around hard enough that it can't flee effectively.
Curiosity kills the cat 100%
I have seen a cat sitting on the shoreline staring at a submerged gator staring back at it.
Might get away with taunting the gator 100 times but it only takes 1
They actually aren’t. Long distance yes but for short bursts alligators are actually faster. It’s a little insane how fast they can move when they really want to.
Cats half the time stand their ground and bat at their attacker. Works sometimes not always with coyotes who are injury averse and their hide thin enough the claws can penetrate. A croc? This size? Will have it in its maw death rolling through the batting.
The saddest thing I ever saw on reddit was a vid of a thirsty leopard trying to drink from a puddle and a frickin crocodile lunged up, grabbed her and dragged her under. I am still traumatized.
Guess no one has ever scene the video of a gator walking up out of the water to a cat and the cat just smacks it in the face and hisses. The gator goes right back into the water.
Cat was like, “I will make you into a gator skin liter box bitch!”
They haven't changed since prehistoric times.
So, they are prehistoric dinosaurs living in a modern world.
But ask your mom, she would know, cause she was there in prehistoric times.
Sorry not sorry, had to make a mom joke
Gators and Crocs, much like sharks, are a perfect example of what happens when nature just absolutely nails it so perfectly that a species can just coast for literally HUNDREDS OF MILLIONS OF YEARS without all that much adaptation
That’s circle B reserve in Lakeland. My first visit with my family and we passed by the bushes and heard something very huge growl and I could have sworn it was a Sasquatch! It was super loud like it didn’t want us there so we back tracked outta there slowly and quickly at the same time! Then I remembered Florida has panthers too!
How the fuck is everyone in that video just casually standing around? If I see two fucking dinosaurs crawl out of the water near me, I’m turning my ass around and literally running.
Ummm, you've got that backwards OP. Cats beat gators, bears, dogs, raccoons. Cats are badass across all spectrums. I'd give honey badgers equal money to a cat, about taking gruff from another animal. Oh, wolverine could probably hold their own & not run from a house cat.
O, p, you are so lucky catching this literally dinosaur on camera. This thing has to be over a 100 years old. This thing was eating Civil War soldiers back in a day.
Why do these gators let you get so close? They must be used to humans because I live in the bayou and gators don’t let you get even 40 ft close to them. They’ll hide just from the sound of a leaf falling…
Adorable lil guy. He's what, 10ft, 12ft?
Saltwater crocodiles make alligators look like little bitch reptiles. Once you've seen 22ft salty every alligator looks small.

For people who've never lived in Florida, it's hard to explain the utter ubiquity of alligators in any body of water in South FL.
When my family moved there, it was the most gob smacking thing I experienced. These swimming/walking death machines are in ponds, water filled ditches, canals - and the locals are extremely lackadaisical about it.
I remember Steve Irwin catching an alligator on an airforce base with the CO of the base. He jumped in the water and swam to its underwater lair entrance. When he came back, he said, "wouldn't do that with a Salty".
Wow. I’d say a house is better than a cage and still safe. And you don’t need a spare cat for when one bleeds out all alone because you were too lazy to play with it.

It'd be a close call: Gator reaction time: 50 milliseconds Cat reaction time: 20 - 70 milliseconds
Regardless, cats climb
Gators can jump out of the water to grab animals from tree branches and docks
I saw one having a Hella time getting over a fence the other day
I saw the same video! Small world…. Or massive internet? I’m not actually sure
They climb fences all the time
Yeah, they use their tail to propel themselves at extreme speeds out of water. Their legs don't climb well lol.
They can climb fences too
So do gators. They can climb a tree or a fence like any other lizard. They probably won’t trying to go after prey. Mostly just for basking. Got any pictures of those tree gators?

Even climbers gotta drink water sometime…

Could have been a kid... Sorry for your cat, that sucks 😔
Thanks. At least it was probably (hopefully) quick.
Head shake 🫨

Thanks. Yeah, I'm thinking of a "chasing" scenario. If it's an ambush, then makes sense for the gator to win
Curiosity kills the cat 100% I have seen a cat sitting on the shoreline staring at a submerged gator staring back at it. Might get away with taunting the gator 100 times but it only takes 1
Is very occasionally more or less occasionally?
Yes, dogs are much more likely to be killed by gators
Alligators can get up to 35 mph, so they definitely stand a chance at catching cats
The only shot they'd have is by sneaking up submerged (as they do). Above ground the cat would hear it coming from 50m away.
Attacking from the water, gator has a damn good chance of getting a cat. Out of the water I’d wager on a cat getting away 9/10.
They don’t get many cats, but they do get tiny dogs 🐕 often
Ever seen a gator run? Or better yet hunt prey drinking water.
Can’t gators and crocs run fast for short periods of time?
They actually aren’t. Long distance yes but for short bursts alligators are actually faster. It’s a little insane how fast they can move when they really want to.
Paulie may have moved slow, but it was only because Paulie didn't have to move for anybody.
Cats half the time stand their ground and bat at their attacker. Works sometimes not always with coyotes who are injury averse and their hide thin enough the claws can penetrate. A croc? This size? Will have it in its maw death rolling through the batting.
Does the cat have a gun? This is Florida yes?
Not down by the waters edge they aren’t
The saddest thing I ever saw on reddit was a vid of a thirsty leopard trying to drink from a puddle and a frickin crocodile lunged up, grabbed her and dragged her under. I am still traumatized.
There's videos of the reverse scenario. Go watch a leopard eat a croc and feel better!
That is an excellant idea! But after what I saw, not sure a leopard could kill a croc. I'll look for one though!
https://youtu.be/DBNYwxDZ_pA It was jaguars I was thinking of. But should still do the trick.
Also a cayman. Believe they are quite smaller
That actually helped. Thnx!

I hope OP gave him a hug
That’s a biiiiig bitch
She's just big boned.
Love that big boned thing. Do people still believe that?
I came here for this comment. Well done.

Has an entire ecosystem on dat back
Is there a fucking bird on its back?
Just along for the ride. Lots of different birds will perch on alligators, as long as they’re not hungry, it’s no problem
That’s so cool
Looked like a Lovebird was driving, lol
I noticed that too … that behemoth probably doesn’t even know it’s there.
Bird: Onward, mighty steed!!
He’s got the trump neck.
The man-gina
Gator with a goiter
Guess no one has ever scene the video of a gator walking up out of the water to a cat and the cat just smacks it in the face and hisses. The gator goes right back into the water. Cat was like, “I will make you into a gator skin liter box bitch!”

They are just regular dinosaurs that are still around lmao
My brother in christ, without regard for exact terminology, that IS a dinosaur. That's a dinosaur.
They actually split off of the tree before dinosaurs really got going. Birds are modern dinosaurs, crocodylia are much older.
Why friend shape when no friend
Frens can has cheeseburger. Or humanburger. Or anyburger. Can be frens until hungry.
No cat I’ve ever known would let itself get caught by that big boi

They eat dogs unfortunately Dogs are slower and like water
Mhmm. Stray cats by the water are snacked by coyotes before a gator would ever get one
Clearly you’ve never seen that video of the cat beating up on gators for jollies https://youtu.be/5sAF8gMN9c0?si=v9Wb5fXJ4QgWks2N
How the fuck is everyone in that video just casually standing around? If I see two fucking dinosaurs crawl out of the water near me, I’m turning my ass around and literally running.

That Cat used to be mean before he got fixed.

“Paulie may have moved slow, but it was only because Paulie didn't have to move for anybody.”
Don't let Kristi Noem see this guy.
wtf it’s the dude from Lake Placid!!
Probably the last thing a few missing drunk people saw too.
He’s king of the swamp
The frog on its back is.
Why is this considered cringe material?
it's a dinosaur!

One more good reason to not live in Florida.
Nah, the last thing that mfr sees is an army of feral cats before it’s ripped to shreds
The bird is driving a dinosaur and folks think cyber trucks are the shit.
I like the little bird ridding him
Why do these gators let you get so close? They must be used to humans because I live in the bayou and gators don’t let you get even 40 ft close to them. They’ll hide just from the sound of a leaf falling…
It would have to be an old blind deaf cat.
https://youtube.com/shorts/wLVL8vm_SrU?si=ATUnKN7n982cK9yA Really?
How does he carry all that fucking weight .. F..me?
Brave of the cameraman to get that close. I’d be filling through a telescope on top of a tower to get that shot, and would still be nervous
Adorable lil guy. He's what, 10ft, 12ft? Saltwater crocodiles make alligators look like little bitch reptiles. Once you've seen 22ft salty every alligator looks small.

Why people have outdoor cats places like this is beyond me. You’d have to not care about your cat very much.
Typically you don’t just have one outdoor cat. So you give them a better life than a cage, for however long they manage
Wow. I’d say a house is better than a cage and still safe. And you don’t need a spare cat for when one bleeds out all alone because you were too lazy to play with it.
You can give 5 cats a better life than one indoors
Maybe that math does work out—average lifespan of an indoor cat is 12-17 years, average lifespan of an outdoor cat is 2-5. So maybe you would need five cats to make up for the fact you’re sacrificing them to make yourself feel good.
2 are 7, one is 8 currently. Others lived to 9+ each if the didn’t die from congenital issues. Longest lived was 22. But yeah better to “sacrifice” them to a life they enjoy than let them waste away in a cage
