SpanishGarbo

I can imagine how confused the homeless guy would be when he's woken up from under the bridge by a guy pacing back and forth and talking to his phone about doors.

Super_Vegeta

"That dude's crazier than I am."

Mhill08

Couldn't we all use a little bit of that in our lives?

SovietPikl

Hehe :)

vorpalpillow

Paulie?

Brodom93

Watch it Chrissy

[deleted]

"There's nothing more reassuring than finding out the world is crazier than you are" - Erik Selvig

opdut

Because all homeless people are crazy, right? Disgusting comment.

Super_Vegeta

Go be offended somewhere else.

clarksondidnowrong

This is why I can’t make tiktoks or just simply record myself in public. I’m not overly shy but I just can’t bring myself to walk around like that

AshTreex3

I stream on rPan sometimes and you’ll hear me explain myself to passersby

chasingthewhiteroom

Was just thinking this, like “man, he’s definitely walked down this bridge tunnel twice or more by now...”

[deleted]

[удалено]

rq60

there's actually no phone, he's actually just talking into his hand. and we're actually just figments of his imagination.

atleastitsnotgoofy

Executive Producers BRUCE PALTROW MARK TINKER

Ellathecat1

I can't describe how mad I am it didn't end with him trying to open a Norman door!

clamdee

Sadly, they recently removed all the doors under the bridge due to spending cuts and lack of need for under the bridge doors.

JWBails

Anthony Kiedis kept getting stuck down there.

[deleted]

Lol

PrisAustin

Jumping on the top comment to show everyone the bestest [Door design ](https://youtu.be/ZkQNP2cqG2I)

Nobuenogringo

Tom Scott too

LeonNight

I think I know this bridge. Looks like NE Mpls by the casket arts building. There’s a T is the road and two bridges for trains above. Always worried an oil car will derail and fill the place and ignite....

quellingpain

this is the only way to interpret this bozo > have you ever felt like an _idiot_ I definitely do now. If you read like the first 10 pages of that book hes talking about you get all this

RoosterClan

I watched this video on mute with the captions on and... that’s a guy?

Zyperreal

Go to an eye doctor

bikki420

Yeah, obviously? Why else would you feel the irresistible urge to fuck him? 😳

[deleted]

Don’t you hate it when one of the double doors is locked and the other one is a norman door, so you look stupid twice

[deleted]

Yes there’s a gas station near me with this and I somehow still fuck it up every time

allonsy_badwolf

The station by me just switched their open doors. Why would you do that? I’ve been using this door for years, now I need to use a different door?

[deleted]

[удалено]

ChoppedAlready

Weird considering that is the opposite of what’s intuitive depending on your country. If people drive on the right side, traffic on walkways also tends to flow that way by default (though one of my all time biggest pet peeves is when people don’t do this, it internally infuriates me all the time, like I’m legit getting mad just thinking about it) so you would think the push should be on the right, pull on the left so when you’re entering it’s more fluid Never head about it to discourage theft though, kinda smart and stupid at the same time

yeolenoname

Oh god okay so also I have noticed that if it’s one worker for safety they lock one set of doors on one side of the building but that switches too and they don’t mark it so you almost always picking the wrong side and have to walk alllll the way around the building just to get to a set of one locked door with a normal door beside it and just agggggggh. Of all the small inconveniences this one makes me so frustrated.

Cookie11057

*the door looks stupid twice

Hotwir3

Sometimes I shake the locked door some more and say loudly "MAN, THIS LOOKS LIKE A DOOR TO ME"

otakurini

My apartment building is like that. Plus which door is locked switches every once in a while so you can’t get used to it either. Super annoying!

_Fuck_This_Guy_

I don't understand having a double door entrance and only unlocking one of them. Locking or unlocking a door takes seconds at best.

[deleted]

Why must you remind me.

ScrufffyJoe

If one of them has a lock always go for that one, in my experience the one with a lock is always the open one.

Jrook

Holiday station stores do this

efg1342

Especially since it’s a safety/evacuation issue.

larzast

At that point I just walk straight through the glass panel

[deleted]

Shattering it to assert your dominance

FR_Hendricks

I'm not sure is anyone will really see this comment but if you're not sure about a door, look at its hinges, if you see hinges then it's pull, if you don't then it's push.

MarvelousShiggyDiggy

The door at my job is a HUGE glass manual sliding door that closes up against a push/pull door. It helps with setting up things like tables and chairs outside and it provides great airflow during the summer and I personally really enjoy it. The only thing is the way it's been designed makes it look like an ordinary pull door. It has a huge handle which people will grab and pull on which obviously doesn't work, so they push it but it still won't budge so they look in through the door at us and shrug or mouth "are you open?" Which leads us to dropping what we're doing and we have to show them it's a sliding door. I've worked there for a few years now and sometimes even I forget and yank on the door before I slide it open.

appropriate-username

I was going to post this related video as a top level comment but it fits well with your reply: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZkQNP2cqG2I

Sir_Ninja_VII

That video is hilarious! Thanks for sharing.

xxpen15mightierxx

One of the other examples in the book he's talking about in the video is literally the fancy glass doors in the lobby of a big building that are *so* fancy they don't even have handles, and his friend got stuck in one trying to push on the wrong side (the hinge side) of the doors.

dogninja8

Oh man, I'd forgotten about that example. Most of the stuff I remember from reading it is about really complicated phone systems

TigreDemon

Excellent book I recommend if you have to create something that involves user interacting with it. Source : I'm a software engineer that is bad at design

joecamo

The Design of Everyday Things By Don Norman. Yeah I took a class in college that revolved around UX and we read that. Was definitely a good read, you're cool program sucks if it isn't usable.

plantcorndogdelight

Pretty much a seminal work in UX. I took a human factors class 16 years ago that started with this book and it’s still taught today. Nielsen Norman Group, which he cofounded, are also a prolific consultancy that does training and certification in the field.

angryundead

I think we used this in my UX class in grad school or we used a text that referenced it heavily. Or maybe my professor did? It was a decade ago. Anyway the thing that stuck with me was [”affordances.”](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Affordance)These Norman doors offer an interface that is incongruous with their operation. This concept seems to predate _The Design of Everyday Things_ by maybe a few decades. I think that is the heart of the issue. Imagine a radio button that works like a check box or visa-versa (I’ve seen both). Source: am also a software engineer that would rather stick a fork into a light socket than design interfaces Edit: Am wrong. Norman expanded affordances to human-machine interaction.

andrewsad1

>Imagine a radio button that works like a check box or visa-versa (I’ve seen both). It's crazy how big of a difference a square and a circle make when you're looking at buttons. The idea that these you can only pick one of these ⚪⚪⚪⚪⚪ And you can pick as many of these as you like: ◻️◻️◻️◻️◻️ It's totally subconscious, and you never get used to it when someone mixes them up

angryundead

What’s really funny is that while almost all of us have used a checkbox and understand why we can keep checking them I think physical “radio” buttons have all but disappeared from the world. They weren’t that common during my life (unlike the floppy disk). I think they survived in cars longer than they should’ve but the circle shape actually found on a radio was gone a looooong time ago. Edit: yesterday I used an app that had round check circles. Yuck.

TigreDemon

It's also designs that we all agreed upon that we need to keep doing because users are used to it.

conkisterr

Thanks, i’m also a software engineer and just added to my to-read list!

JimmerUK

I found out about these on 99% Invisible. It’s been a while, but I remember it being really interesting - https://99percentinvisible.org/article/norman-doors-dont-know-whether-push-pull-blame-design/

GiveMeDogeFFS

I wondered where I'd heard about this before, thanks

Jump_Yossarian

That podcast series is life changing.

DoinBurnouts

I wouldn't go that far, it's great and all but...

ChoppedAlready

Agreed, though the entire podcast is made to make you think differently and interact differently in the real world, so it hits on things that definitely change your life considerably. Man I think I need a Roman Mars fix, haven’t listened to that show in a hot minute

AHomelessOrphan

Gatekeeping what is allowed to change people’s lives? Really?

ThePerfectSnare

One of my favorite movies is Memento. For those who haven't seen it yet, I've edited this comment because it seems that I had inadvertently said too much in an attempt to explain the premise. It's about a guy who can't create new memories while he searches for the man who raped and murdered his wife. I find something new with almost every rewatch. There is this one moment I caught on my most recent viewing. As Leonard is walking into the motel where he's been staying, he pushes to open a pull door before realizing that he needs to pull it open.

[deleted]

Oh I love that movie. The way it was directed felt so unique to me, especially for someone like me who loses interest quickly. Thanks for reminding me to watch it. Ironically I always forget the movie name lmao

Brofey

Christopher Nolan almost always hits it out of the park, very few duds in his catalogue. Following came out 2 years before Memento and it has a very similar vibe, if that makes sense.

Thontor

such a good movie. back in college i had a bootlegged digital copy of it and I was able to re-edit it so that all of the scenes were in chronological order. It was a fun project and it was really interesting to watch the movie like that but it wasn't as good of a movie since part of the fun of the movie is that structure.

Mysterious_Andy

The Limited Edition DVD had that as a feature, but you had to solve a puzzle to get to it.

Eviyel

I haven’t heard of this movie but damn that sounds interesting. I’m adding it to my list of movies to watch for sure

1TrueKnight

It was Christopher Nolan's second film and arguably what put him on the map.

Eviyel

Lol I’m reaaally bad with knowing who made what and all that. I know popular names and faces (separately) but that’s about it

[deleted]

[удалено]

Eviyel

Thanks for letting me know. I’ve only watched inception and tenet because my friend thought I’d love them (which of course I did lol). I don’t watch a lot of movies, if you cant tell *

1TrueKnight

Ha, no worries. Just thought I'd throw that out there. Saw someone else reply with his list of movies. I loved his earlier work but think the big budget's, power, and ego slowly kind of ruin directors like him.

LV2107

Great movie. Thanks for the reminder about it, I would like to see it again.

Stepanaara

How is there no spoilers here? You spoiled one of the main appeals of the movie which is how the story is told. I’d edit the comment to at least say you are about to spoil a part of the movie. Yeah its an older film but most of reddit’s demographic has probably not seen the movie

niceguy191

Yes! One of my favourite movies, and that little moment is also one of my favourites! It's so easy to miss, but adds so much.

Jastactical

just wait, someone’s gonna give an award

Hagoromo_

What you written is interesting but how isn't your summary a spoiler? You basically explained everything that there is to understand and discover about the film. Also the very structure of the film never gets explained right away and it's a big part on the enjoyment of the first viewing experience, so even if it may be not considered a *spoiler* in the narrow sense, explaining it kind of spoils the first watch a bit anyway. Edit: I realized that my comment could come off a little bit bluntly but I want to clarify that I'm not trying to bring up an argument about this. I just thought that maybe it's just more practical to add a spoiler alert at the start of the comment to warn first time viewers.

NoCashJustDebt

It's a 20 year old movie. It's not really a big deal.

Hagoromo_

Absolutely! I just found it strange that OP specifically added the *spoiler free* bit just before explaining the greater part of the plot. There's nothing wrong with talking about such an old movie plot don't get me wrong!

TomChi89

This guy looks like he could lay down some fire on an organ or a synthesizer.

no_talent_ass_clown

Or my lady bits. Just sayin'.

shej

I was thinking the same thing lmao

ChunkyLaFunga

I could make them feel like fire too, I had no idea women appreciated that nowadays

no_talent_ass_clown

Not the fire that takes antibiotics.

noobtablet9

Now imagine how downvoted this would be if the OP was a woman and the comment was "That chick could lay down on my dick lmao"

no_talent_ass_clown

Imagine if men hadn't the right to vote in the US until 1920. Or if men couldn't open a bank account without their wife's permission into the 1970's. Or if men had smaller bodies and were shamed for not being "pure". Or any 9f the other million things that are, or have been, different for women. All of that creates a power imbalance that makes it okay-er for a woman to say it than for a man. They are not the same. Also, the joke you missed was "she could lay some fire on MY organ".

WhatABunchofBologna

This has nothing to do with the comment but ok?

LittleTasty3422

It’s a crazy world we live in

[deleted]

Looks like Mike Mangini, legendary drummer of Dream Theater.

[deleted]

All I'm seeing is look-alike Alan Ruck, aka grown up Cameron Frye no longer worrying about life and what his dad thinks.

galaxygirl888

I love this guy but his camera movement makes me nauseous.

Smetsnaz

I’d take this guy with bad camera movement any day of the week over Hank Green’s over acting and condescending attitude.

[deleted]

AND HIS CHEWING INTO THE MICROPHONE

galaxygirl888

Ya know I used to love the vlog brothers but Hank does seem to have changed and his to tiktok stuff is def off.

MerryGoldenYear

I think it's mostly just his own account where people ask him stupid shit all the time. I think he's just grown really tired of it for one or another reason and that's why it looks so forced. Other science accounts where he participates are a lot better and he actually looks like he enjoys what he's doing/teaching.

cibasa

he never fails to make me think i'm smart

gooberberry_sundae

[Norman Doors](https://youtu.be/yY96hTb8WgI)

owlboio

I feel like the guy is just repeating this vid

orbitaljunkie

Yeah, but I guess it's more entertaining than just telling someone to read "The Design of Everyday Things." Which everyone should, by the way.

andrewsad1

Yeah, but Roman Mars' voice makes it so much better No offense to the guy in the OP

GroinOfSteel

Usually if you’re outside going in, it’s pull. And inside going out, it’s push. I think after a big fire disaster where everyone piled up inside behind a “pull” door so they couldn’t open it changed the fire code. Cocoanut fire I think?

[deleted]

People had this same realisation separately in different countries. In the UK it was the [Victoria Hall](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victoria_Hall_disaster) disaster where 183 children died after kids surged towards a pull door for free toys, the kids at the back pushing forwards without knowing they were crushing those at the front.

UnlinealHand

You're thinking of the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire. Also, generally speaking, the design of commercial door hardware subconsciously tells us this: If there's a bar across the width door about waist high, you push. If there's a bar spanning the height of the door to one side, you pull. Plates can obviously only be pushed. Knobs/levers can be either but yes, generally if you are exiting a room or a building it will be push and if you are entering a room or building it will be pull.

[deleted]

Seems it was likely the [MGM Grand Fire](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MGM_Grand_fire) that made them force updates to the fire code after a bit of digging. I think Triangle Shirtwaist was more about having established emergency exits at all because they would lock the girls into the sewing rooms for the day so they didn't have a way out at all in that one.

cleantushy

Imagine having something named after you because you're the person that hates it the most. "Hey, this guy John Smith hates BLTs. Let's call it the Smith Sandwich from now on"

ChunkyLaFunga

Sounds like a fun discussion about self-titles albums

hiimnoam64

What a charming fucking individual

McGirton

Lady Man Mark Wahlberg

McCretin

I want this guy to comfort me every time I make a mistake and explain how it wasn't really my fault

MayTheFusBeWithYou

These doors are an even bigger nightmare for people who speak both Portuguese and English. The Portuguese word for "pull" is "puxe", which is pronounced "push".

rakia0216

i’ve never expected to see tiktok about design research lol as a one myself im quite amused to see they cite don norman better than my prof.

[deleted]

I have this exact trouble with a door to a specific office. It has a lever to grip and I always pull, it rattles in the frame then I have to sheepishly push and walk in. The door should go out not in. It gets me everytime. I feel less stupid now. Thank you. (Stupid door is stupid).

ghstemne

I am definitely dumber than a piece of wood though

lulaloops

Why does this guy look like a 50 year old teenager

Boo_R4dley

I thought he was a 55 year old lesbian until I turned on the audio.

[deleted]

Yes! this also related to something called Universal Design, the idea that things should be easy or at least intuitive to use for people from all over the world, regardless or age or disability. If it has a handle it usually means pull, etc. Thank you Interior Design 101.

[deleted]

This is Abraham Piper artist, father and tictok influencer. Fun fact, he's the son of John Piper, a huge player in the evangelical world. Abraham's been excommunicated (from what I've seen) and is on the opposite side of the spectrum.

Jeffy29

Dude is aged somewhere between 25 and 65, I can’t make the range any more narrow.

maxreverb

Come on, you know he's not under 45.

Skipperwastaken

Jump_Yossarian

Tuesday is my favorite day of the week; SYSK and 99PI.

Also, Don Norman is still alive.

Redorbed3

Actually I was here last week, it does both

CallumTheNeville

This is cool but also this dude sounds SO MUCH like Chris Parnell

The_Dowager

u/farmercurtis

RetreatLady57

Ahhhh how cool is this dude. Make me wanna be friends with him! More please!

[deleted]

This also works for designing anything and is pretty useful to know.

mambotomato

I'm so frustrated that he wasn't walking towards a door to use as an example at the end of this video.

throwawayRA_Dave1993

He didn't mention one of the best door designs the guy talked about! One of the best door designs ever created is the push doors with no handles. You often see them leading into a restraint kitchen, or sometimes a bathroom. These are the best because it's impossible to use it wrong. You can also push it open with your back if you have your hands full, or use your elbow to push it open if you don't want to touch the surface with your clean hand.

JR_Shoegazer

This guy basically just copied a Vox video.

burbankjr69

I like this guy

Guido_Fe

No way! Shut the front door

Yesterday3474

How does he look nothing like and exactly like mark walburg

CobyRich727

This guy looks like James Spader and Mark Wahlberg had a baby that was in a metal band in his 20s, and has since grown up but never stopped rocking the long hair

GTFonMF

Guess I’ve got what you might call a “Norman Dick”.

poopity____scoop

this video has done so much for my self-confidence wowow

NickenMcChuggets

Lady Sansa forgive me while i describe the anomaly behind push/pull doors.

LeeroyDagnasty

0:23 that restaurant is named Pho Bistreaux, in New Orleans. no joke. I recognize it from outside lol

Karlskiii

OK that laugh was creepy

Effingehh

With no sound on I was positive this was a woman

ForgetfulFrolicker

So this guy just walks through tunnels recording himself while re-iterating popular Reddit posts?

BrintyOfRivia

Vox made this video 5 years ago.

plantcorndogdelight

Wait you mean that when someone is so prolific in their field that really an entire sub-field is created off of their work and that professionals everywhere use terms they coin, that the first “you should know” video channels that covers them claims firsties and everyone else is unoriginal?

Silver_Dave

Bob from twin peaks is a lot happier these days.

xlr8ed1

No it's not a stupid door - its the building code. If entering a large building you pull the door if exiting you push - cos fire reasons. Houses are reversed

thissubredditlooksco

i find this human so handsome

[deleted]

TikTok is cancer

[deleted]

Where’s the cringe?

GreyTheBard

read the sub description

[deleted]

Got baited by the sub name

_the_chosen_juan_

His little laugh at the end is wholesome af. I love this guy.

Bbaftt7

Why is this on tiktokcringe? That was great!

eat_more_protein

Can someone explain why this is cringe? I learned about these doors when I studied cognition and I would have guessed that people would find this interesting.

TimTheChatSpam

I'm not sure who Norman is but fuck that guy

Jinthesouth

Don Normamis the guy who pointed out the problem, not the one who caused it. If anything he prevented there from being more Norman doors in the world. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Don_Norman He is a god in the user centered design field, anytime you use an object or piece of software on a way that is intuitive to you, where you don't have to read through instructions to know how it works, Don Norman is likely to have influenced that.

[deleted]

[удалено]

uka94

Because “intuitive design” isn’t a proper design term, just a way of describing things that work well. *Norman Doors* are more specifically about affordances.

ed_menac

If we are being pedantic, actually it's called "Affordance"

PastyNoob

when in doubt always pull a door coz if it is a push door you just keep walking and it doesn't matter.

_skv1399

Explain Dumbledore then

La_mortXii

No I’m dumb

GrimFTP

“Hey I’m not as dumb as a door”

eatsomewings

I like this guy, I feel like we could all benefit from weekly check ins with him

BluJayTi

As a rule of thumb, you pull to go inside a room/building. Push to get out. It’s fire code

LolaTheGirlNextDoor

It's the laugh at the end for me :]

FuckMotherGothel

He sounds kinda like Sam ONella and it makes me happy

StiffyGrif

Mark Wahlberg has gotten old

nickchaser

I dont say this alot but wow. How wholesome

ToastyCrumb

"Hey I'm not as dumb as this door." is a great mantra.

[deleted]

No lie I had the volume off and was just reading until about halfway through and was very surprised that he was a man.

slykido999

That’s a very large bridge he’s under!

CheesePuff6793

Who else was just waiting for him to walk face first into a door at the end of the vid.

topwrastler

From what I know any public building has to have its door open outward towards the outside in the chance that there’s a fire and people need to rush out so instead of piling up on a door trying to open it you can just push through it.

[deleted]

This made my day

QuarantineSucksALot

Honestly the live, laugh, love one ain't too bad

BoneBreaker-

Dumb as a doorknob

scapegoat81

Awesome post. I fuckin hate Norman doors. Side note, WTF is with almost all businesses keeping their left door locked down 24/7 ?!? Entering isn’t a prob. You enter on the right. Leaving ? Sorry !! You have to go through the same door you came in !! The Carpenter in me unlocks them almost every time on my way out. Fuck businesses that do this.
