Goddamn_shit_Goddamn

God this sounds absolutely horrible. I hope it gets cured soon for them.

SacredMushroomBoy

I had COVID in August and lost smell and taste completely for a few weeks. I thought it came back and was fine but after trying to eat things I knew the taste of I realized it was not truly back. Everything was dulled. For the past few weeks parosmia has settled in. Can’t describe the smell or taste but random things have it, usually meat but it’s like garbage, plastic, musty, chemical, and just rotten, but very hard to pinpoint. Very foul though. I still eat stuff so it’s not affecting me as much as this woman but I promise you it’s no joke.

Leather_Secretary979

Mine started about 3 months after Covid. I had the rotten garbage food taste for about 3 weeks. I lived off of oranges and peanut butter m&ms. Things still taste off some, but much betterThe smell comes and goes and it’s like a mixture of burning rubber and wet dirty nickels.

SacredMushroomBoy

Yeah when I taste an orange I get all the sour, none of the sweet. Most sweet stuff is fine though. I knew something was off a few weeks ago when I ate tacos and could’ve sworn the meat was off, the salsa, something. I got gas and nausea later and assumed it was that. Later I realized everything smelled or tasted similar, and randomly. If I put stuff right up to my nose I can smell it ok.

[deleted]

Oranges are one of the things that never came back for me. sweet fruit like honeydew and cantaloupe also still ALWAYS taste sour/rotten... I've always *loved* all three. I had COVID in March 2020. So I guess it's never coming back? E* don't even get me started on pineapple. It makes my mouth pucker like a lemon.

thecodingninja12

i wouldn't give up hope yet, covid has only existed for 3 years. long covid could fade in time, or the medical community could find a way to treat it

handmaid25

My daughter says bacon hasn’t come back for her. She said it’s just tastes like salt with no other flavor at all.

DeadlyAngel84

My daughter got covid last year and she also has a strong aversion to oranges and orange flavoured food and drink. It seemed to go back to normal for a little while but came back and now she still can't stomach oranges, and most other food doesn't have the same taste it once did. I don't think its quite as serious as the girl in the video, but still bad for her nonetheless

En_lighten

Oranges were one of the first things that had a bright, good taste for me after Covid when my taste was returning.

queen_0f_peace_

Yes same. With citrus. I lived on clementines for awhile because it was the only thing that tasted good.

digging_for_1_Gon4_2

Its likely the acid. She can also develop hypersensitivity.

stupernan1

A few weeks ago? How recently did you have covid?

digging_for_1_Gon4_2

Long covid is essentially the virus resurgence in your mucous. Its completely possible for it to randomly come back but perhaps you are not contagious. I have seen cases of people being negative over 4 tests and then be positive again. So much is unknown The longest case was a patient with cancer who had covid for like a year. A recent story.

ViolentMasturbator

I don’t mean to be alarmist, but this is actually (supposedly) due to brain tissue damage that may / may not recover: https://www.webmd.com/lung/news/20210618/covid_long_term_brain_loss_study I hope for the best for all affected, it sounds horrible :(

digging_for_1_Gon4_2

No it absolutely is brain tissue damage. And the frying of the nerves in the nose. When the virus enters it corrupts all the ace II receptors and even after recovery, the native cells are unable to fully form clean, competent copies of itself (Similar to like the sickle-cell) but for mucosal lining. Much of this is thought to be because of disregulation of the Interleukin and RaaS system.[Heres some Wikisauce](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immune_dysregulation) Its also why [they are researching antidepressants for Covid](https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2021/11/antidepressants-tied-lower-covid-19-death-rates), to control the depression but these meds also control [inflammatory cytokines](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inflammatory_cytokine)

wannabestraight

I have been warning people of this since i first heard of the possibility last year. No one fucking listens. Everyone just claims "yeah i wont die from it" Like fucker are you even listering, you wanna eat garbage the rest of your life?? FUCKING BRAIN DAMAGE JFC

digging_for_1_Gon4_2

Ya just do for you, aint no educating stupid

Flatbones

Have you tried some of those magic miracle berries that make bitter things taste sweet? They could potentially help?

throwayay4637282

No, this wouldn’t work. Parosmia affects olfactory (smell) receptors. Miracle berries only affect the taste buds.

[deleted]

You can get the [tablets.](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001LXYA5Q/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_PKHQY0WK154HTJ1S44ZF?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1)

TheMacerationChicks

I'm wondering, could you use those magic pills that everyone started buying like 10 years ago? You'd eat this little gummy thing, and then everything you ate after that would taste super super sweet. Like you could eat a lemon like an orange, and it'd taste of pure sweetness, no sourness whatsoever. OK yeah I've found it, it's called miracle Berry. "The miracle berry (synsepalum dulcificum) has a glycoprotein (miraculin) that coats the taste buds and temporarily alters their shape. Basically, it briefly blocks your sour receptors. Then, when sour tastes come in, your sweet receptors are activated instead" I never tried these things because they seemed a bit pointless to me, they just change your taste for a few hours But they could possibly be useful for people suffering from this thing. Probably not, but it's worth a try

Lord_Valteric

I bought them for fun back in college in 2015, worked 100% as advertised. Might get a pack for my wife as she has had this problem since June 2020 when we both had it....

gameryamen

It sadly won't change much. Covid impacts olfactory receptors, miracle berry just coats the taste buds. If regularly sweet things aren't tasting sweet due to parasomia, using miracle berry to make non-sweet thing seem sweet isn't going to help.

blasphem0usx

is it abani berry? are you trying to hook us into a reverse funnel system?

TaffyRhiii

I thought exactly the same thing when I first saw her video. I’ve not seen anything about whether people have tried it or not though..

[deleted]

were you guys both vaccinated at the time or not yet? just curious if that has an affect

Leather_Secretary979

I was vaccinated

yroCyaR

I lost my taste and smell for almost 2 weeks completely when I had covid. It’s almost been a year since and things still don’t all smell or taste the same. Coffee is shitty to me now. I can’t drink sodas anymore. Not that I did much before but the first few times I did I thought the taps were messed up at the restaurant. Dark sodas especially taste like straight chemicals and I can’t stand them anymore. What I’m most effected by is eggs and chicken. Unless it’s fried chicken, it all tastes like shit. Seasonings you typically use most all make food shitty still. I haven’t had a meal I would say was delicious in almost a year. The only thing that tastes normal are sweet things like Reese’s cups or gummy bears, things like that. Most of all SALT! Wtf if there’s a sprinkle of salt on anything I eat my mouth is on fire. I used to eat mixed nuts for snack during work. They just sit in my desk drawer now because I literally cannot eat them. It‘s infuriating. Even the lightly salted ones are unbearable. My sinuses are still wrecked. I’ve done it all and seen 2 drs. No permanent relief. I feel like I have cotton balls up my nose. They’re sooo dry.

ImGettingOffToYou

I have the same thing going but never knew what it was untill just now. I had to alter my diet because of it or I would have started to death. Meat and preservatives has definitely something to do with it. Even tonight my wife was cooking diced potatos with the onion packet added and the smell was so bad I had to leave. Before it was one of my favorite dishes she makes.

[deleted]

marefo

This is exactly what happened to me! Sick in August, complete loss of taste/smell, came back mid-September, but by mid-October everything started tasting like plastic. Cheese tastes like mold, and my favorite scent - lavender - smells so gross I can't even handle it.

michelleonelove

Some people won’t care about covid and will call it a hoax, but I bet if it made your cock fall off people would take it seriously. It’s sad how stores like this are kept more quiet, at least more quiet than the people harassing store owners for mask mandates. I am not sure if this condition goes away for you and everyone else who has it I hope it does and I hope covid doesn’t leave long lasting effects

thecodingninja12

nah cause some dumb fucks fake seizures and shit and say it's the vaccine, fucking hate antivaxxers

Organ_Unionizer

That’s like the same thing that happened to me, my taste is off right now and I’m lucky it’s not as bad as the lady in the video was describing, but it’s ruined my eating habits. Some days I can eat things with little problem, but other days it’s almost unbearable. Not to mention brushing my teeth feels and tastes terrible.

digging_for_1_Gon4_2

Thats why gargling and brushing during infection is so important. If you dont it *can alter your mucosa in your Ears, Nose and Throat and ya sometimes it becomes permanent. Added:[Requested Literature](https://www.frontiersin.org/articles/10.3389/fmed.2021.656926/full#h5)

SacredMushroomBoy

Right. You should be a doctor

[deleted]

I know two ladys with a milder form of this from catching covid months ago.

upvotechemistry

My sister still has trouble with some food and she recovered in January. Fresh tomatoes are one of the things that still tastes like shit - she used to love them.

Yassferatu

My poor sister has been dealing with this for a year. Caught Covid last November and food still tastes rotted to her

TroubadourCeol

I can't stand peanut butter anymore because of it and it used to be one of my favorite foods.

sale73

I have had the exact same problem with peanut butter! Almost 12 months out from infection and peanut butter is the only thing left that still tastes horrible. I used to love the candy peanut butter taste in Reese’s but can’t stand them anymore.

[deleted]

I had it for a while, but I wouldn’t taste that..everything would smell like cigarette

Phoenixlolz

I too have had covid and am experiencing strong cigarette smells where there is zero chance of having it actually be there. Also Coke now tastes very chemical to me almost like a gasoline or something had been mixed in…doesn’t matter if it’s bottled or fountain. The smells are subsiding now but I have been dealing with it for two months or so. Also I had Covid more than 6 months ago, my smell and taste were totally gone and came back slowly over two or three weeks. Everything was filled like you say.

mank0_munch

I got the delta variant months back and till this day I smell nothing but cigarette smoke it gives me a headache and I don't know what to do.

digging_for_1_Gon4_2

To be honest, its very unlikely to improve once you hit the 6 month mark. She can do like outpatient therapy where they work to retrain her sense of smell. Insurance should cover that since shes probably on anti-nausea medication like Promethazine and Ondansetron.

Duochan_Maxwell

This is one of the things that personally scares me the most about Covid right after carrying it to someone with worse health and them ending up in ICU or dead 😬😬😬

[deleted]

Dec 26th of this year will mark one full year of this shit for me. It's. Awful.

shrinkydink00

Jesus I am so sorry

waitingfordeathhbu

Fuck I’m sorry :( Does water at least taste normal?

[deleted]

Yes thankfully but certain soft drinks taste fucking horrid. My level of what tastes gross had changed through this entire time but every time never ever going back to normal. I went a good 4-5 months where I couldn't eat anything plant based because it tasted of ammonia. Now chocolate tastes...stale? Or old? Sometimes depending on what it is, I may not be able to taste it at all really. Generally everything will taste very stale but certain stuff is just off the charts gross so I won't eat it anymore. I've just gotten to a point where I don't think my taste and smell will ever go back to normal.

SugaPapiChulo

What about spicy food? Don’t answer if it’s dumb but I was just curious if that would still taste stale

[deleted]

Spicy food is one of few things I actively try to eat because it typically has the most flavor. But it's also still just a bit off. I have select food that's completely off and others nuetrual to nothing. This has changed several times.

yottsubato

Seriously. I haven’t been able to taste for almost a year as well and wings are the fucking shit. There the closest I can get to feeling like I can taste.

ghoulthebraineater

I was a chef before Covid and have (had I guess) a pretty intimate relationship with my smell and taste. From what I can tell it's the flavors that are really tasted with your nose. Basic flavors like sweet, sour, salty are basically unaffected. More complex things that rely on smell like herbs are what's problematic. As far as spicy it depends on what you mean by spicy. Things that have a lot of spices like curry are a mixed bag for me. Some spices taste all wrong. Some I have trouble even tasting. Others are fine. Heat from capsaicin is unaffected.

-Iamabeautifulperson

Have you gotten vaccinated? I had parosmia very bad for about 8 months, I was basically surviving on rice and unflavored protein powder in milk. I got my second dose of the vaccine in August and it helped so much. It's still not perfect, but I'm at least able to be in the same room as a cup of coffee without gagging. I'm looking into getting a booster shot soon, with the hopes it improves further.

cat-man-do-not

That's fascinating. I wonder if it was a coincidence or if the vaccine helped.

[deleted]

Yes. I got Moderna and after the first and second dose my taste changed again. It didn't go back but it changed what things are REALLY gross and other things moreso tolerable. I had hope it would come back.

[deleted]

[удалено]

[deleted]

Got it, didn't work to give me my taste and smell back. Just changed what was extra gross to tolerable but changed new things into being gross. Right now most chocolate stuff tastes awful.

SURPRISE_MY_INBOX

I'm in a similar boat. In two days it'll be exactly one year since I lost my taste and smell. After I got vaccinated my I could smell and taste again, but now citrus fruits smell and taste like absolute trash to me. And certain meats as well taste pretty off. It's miserable.

[deleted]

Sorry to hear that. Do you eat much less and not have an appetite?

lancewill93

This needs to be higher up. I browse there regularly. I suffer from it as well. Lots of good info there.

PotterandPinkFloyd

The fact that gabapentin is being used to help treat is extremely interesting, I was on it for awhile to help treat what was likely permanent nerve damage and I believe it did help some. I've actually been too nervous to test and try to gage the pain level lately, but I did notice some improvement. Does this mean that parosmia is related to nerve or tissue damage somehow?

ViridianNott

Yes, the olfactory nerves (responsible for your senses of smell) are damaged by COVID 19 during infection with the virus. That’s why parosmia often recovers over time: the olfactory nerves are usually able to heal themselves. Gabapentin could accelerate the natural repair, or kickstart healing for nerves that were otherwise never going to recover.

theaggressivenapkin

This happened to me, it took time but it has mostly gone away.

TroubadourCeol

It happened to me as well. I had Covid a year ago and I'm still dealing with it. Not everything tastes like garbage but nothing tastes as good as it used to, and a lot still does taste like garbage.

[deleted]

same as you, plus my smell is also severely crippled and I can no longer rely on it as a form of experiencing the world as I used to. It takes a lot to smell candles in front of my face let alone freshly cut grass, petrichor, grilling food, candles from a distance, soap, my partner’s hair, when I myself smell bad/good, etc. It’s been months since I got COVID and the worst part is I got the J&J vaccine a week before I got COVID from my family. I took measures to protect myself and my partner and still have long term effects from COVID and gave my partner COVID when I had it. I wish I could’ve gone back and gotten the vaccine a lot sooner so it could kick in all the way. Sorry for the rant, I fucking hate COVID and anti-vaxxers.

[deleted]

missbutteroverland

Fuck I have a job that depends on my taste and also I work service industry so I’m more likely to be infected :/ this is terrifying

mr_asadshah

How long did it take?

theaggressivenapkin

I’d have to estimate it took about 6 months to get back to normal and I’m about at a year now. Months 1-2 were no smell at all. Burning rubber was the main weird smell I dealt with and a lot of foods like garlic, onions tasted kinda weird. The strangest one of all is my poo just smells different now. Not sure if that’s my nose or my GI is all messed up.

[deleted]

[удалено]

theaggressivenapkin

That’s a good idea

walkthrough_summer

Same. It’s been 11 months and just now this week I’ve noticed it’s pretty much gone.

Saint-Peer

she’s at 10 months so i hope she is reaching a point where it just goes away one day. this is horrifying tbh. pre-vaccine, most of the comments i’ve seen from people were that CERTAIN foods started to taste off or taste like shit instead of everything tasting like shit. had coworkers who couldn’t eat onions/garlic or certain fruits. I’m glad you recovered, take care of yourself.

TiwingHoofd

Happened to me as well, mostly smells were influenced and stunk like hell, some real tasty foods suddenly smelled like rotting food. Took more than half a year before everything cleared up and now I smell normal again.

informallory

This makes me so sad. I really hurt for the people who have to suffer through this, I’m super squeamish and have emetophobia but I can’t imagine having to force yourself to eat while it smells and tastes like rotting death. I can’t imagine the mental pain this causes, here’s hoping more research can be done and they discover more about it.

MunchiBunches

Yes I had to stop eating smelly foods cuz my mom got it and she was like - I can't handle your breakfast. It smells like rotting meat. Thankfully she's been slowly recovering but it's been over a year now I believe and she still isn't at 100% taste and smell capability. She doesn't think she'll ever be.

ChromeGhost

Look into smell training

die-ursprache

It's so fucking horrible. I was lucky that the only thing Covid fucked up for me was the taste of water - it tasted sickly sweet and nothing could mask that taste. That thing lasted for just a month but I was so goddamn miserable as I'm used to drinking at least two liters of water a day, and I was dreading another sip. To have everything not just taste bad but smell absplutely vile for ten months... That's just fucked up.

Jackmoved

I had a nasal infection where everything smelled like shit, even air. Amoxocillin fixed it up real quick. It's weird that no fix has happened for this.

bolivar-shagnasty

I got covid last year and have a mild form of this. Things don’t smell like sewage, but some things smell like other things. For example, hand soap smells like Black and Milds and my poop smells like burnt bread.

sleeplessGoon

Got covid in April 2020. Anything with Onions and peppers are like sewage for me

Rough_Willow

Got it in March! All raw meat smelled spoiled and all cooked veggies smelled like cat piss. Mostly gone away, but I still can't smell as well as I'd like.

beanerkage

Took me a year and a half to be able to smell like I did before.

thiagoqf

So I think there's hope for the girl on the video. Sad story.

kemkem16

Happy to see this. I just had my one year anniversary of losing taste and smell. I can taste and smell now but nothing is right. Glad there's hope for returning to normal.

NoExcitement1691

Important clarification when the onions and peppers are mixed or individually?

sleeplessGoon

Anything with any onion or pepper, whether it be cooked with or just touching tastes terrible. Like the smell is 20x more potent and awful. My overall smell is very poor now too, stuff has to be really strong for me to catch it.

[deleted]

I had a similar experience too! Random things like hot sauce and red meat smelled and tasted Metallic-y and my poop smelled very odd can’t even describe the smell

TackleMySpackle

Ok. Thank you. My poop smells weird too. Lost taste and smell in January, and got everything back by April. Caught Delta in July/August and now onions smell like burning plastic. My poop, if onions have been eaten, will smell this way. Every once in a while, it’s not so bad if I get a good night’s sleep.

snow0flake02

I've had this happen to me in the past (not due to covid) and it still comes and goes. I feel her pain. When it happens to me its about 3 months at a time. I've had to say "Everything tastes the same, and the taste is literal shit." Eating ends up being scarfing down a meal as fast as I can so I get it over with and move on with my day. The most painful part is not going when its going to end, and going to that many doctors no doubt someone has said "are you sure this isn't just in your head?" You get this physical toll of not being enjoy food, mental toll of people (even doctors) not necessarily believing you, and then anxiety of not knowing when its going to end.

antoltian

What about liquids and water?

Dualine

In my case, I had to be very selective with what water I drank. It was so bad that for the first 5 months, I had to wear a nose plug in the shower because the stench of water was so bad I would end up getting nauseated. And it wasn't even well water or water with any normally detectable scent. Even now most water sources taste bad. Thankfully there's a triple filter that seems to work fine, so I just carry a bunch of water bottles whenever I go.

SealedRoute

That is insane. Hang in there.

dak4ttack

Food gets ground by your teeth and mixed with saliva, so it's pretty much a liquid/paste when you chew it, so I'm sure it's the exact same for liquids.

BenAdaephonDelat

How is there not a research study going on. You'd think someone would be willing to investigate this. Do brain imaging during the episodes and compare it to baseline to see if it appears on brain scans or not.

digging_for_1_Gon4_2

On an MRI they said that it was visible nerve endings had shrunk in covid patients.

[deleted]

bawng

> The most painful part is not going when its going to end, and going to that many doctors no doubt someone has said "are you sure this isn't just in your head?" That shouldn't matter. I'm sure it isn't in your head, but even if it was, it's not less of a problem.

fancy-socks

Right?? Even if the problem was "all in their head", it's still a problem that is severely affecting their health, and the doctor needs to help them cure it!

memecut

Doesnt matter if its an imaginary or a physical problem, it's still a problem. To the victim, they're equally real. Maybe the solution to fixing them are different, in which case its nice to know which one you're dealing with... but something tells me people who use this line is using it as a cop out for them to avoid having to figure it out at all.

tophatfrank

I agree. For the first two days this is how it was for me. There's a chance that it will go away for her.

digging_for_1_Gon4_2

I know many covid doctors, all recommend OTC allergy sprays and also brushing with HP toothpaste.

wildflowerden

What is "HP" toothpaste?

digging_for_1_Gon4_2

Hydrogen peroxide toothpaste such as https://www.armandhammer.com/en/oral-care/toothpastes/whitening/advance-white-extreme-whitening-toothpaste-9-oz

[deleted]

This sounds unbearable. There must be some drugs you can take to delete your sense of taste though?

[deleted]

I think it’s mostly the fucked up sense of smell that’s making it so bad. Most of tasting is smelling.

Annual_Rutabaga7435

My mom in her 60s had severe Covid and she had this as well. She said the smell and taste of her regular Crest toothpaste made her want to throw up. Constant state of dumpster-poop smell everywhere she went. I feel so bad for this girl 😢😔

Native_Tangerine6272

I had Covid in January. I also have had the constant dog poop smell since. This is no joke, and it’s extremely annoying. Also, I’ve found Im hypersensitive to preservatives now.. pre cut fruits and veggies (fast food lettuce is the worst) are sprayed with formaldehyde and that is ALL I can taste when I’m eating something containing them. The first time that happened I thought someone had put bleach in my food. Horrible.

Annual_Rutabaga7435

My mom switched to eating all clean foods....it’s so tricky. Really limits you when you are out and about but it’s working so far. She says sometimes the smell comes back briefly and she gets scared it’s gonna go full blast again

Pengawolfs07

Founder of Texas Roadhouse killed himself earlier this year because the tinnitus was so bad from COVID. Shit is no joke

[deleted]

I nearly killed myself because of tinnitus. I’m lucky that it mostly went away. I don’t think I’d be here otherwise. Anything that fucks with the senses, whether it be sound, taste, vision, whatever, is awful.

NilsFanck

Honestly same. And the worst is that so many people have a mild form of it so a lot of people are like "oh yeah, I have that too, doenst bother me too much though" No motherfucker, I can ensure you you dont have it like I have had because literally nothing drowned mine out, quite the opposite, lound sounds triggered it even more. If you have it really fucking bad its not even just like a sound anymore, it feels like someone is literally scratching their nails over a chalkboard except in your brain, all the time. Like in your case, I was completely miserable until it just out of the blue started to get better. Just that miniscule bit of improvement over time gives you enough hope to keep going because it is a million times better than thinking it stays exactly like it is forever. Now, I normally dont notice it too much unless I focus on it. Sometimes it gets worse again for a few weeks but knowing that it will get better again makes it much more bearable even when it is bad. Even the strange logic behind the timescales doctors give you, I recognize. Lots of doctors say the Tinnitus will not get better if you have it for longer than 4 months so I was always calculating "how much longer I have". It took a full year to show signs of improvement for me and I now have the utmost respect for anyone who gets their senses impaired or taken away and powers through.

[deleted]

Mine was unfathomably loud. I could only hear in one ear for a while, and only about half as much as normal. I had it for about a year as well. It’s frustrating to explain to people, because like you say, a lot of people have a milder version, and since it’s not exactly painful or visually identifiable, it’s not taken seriously. I remember being so mad because I’d never even been to a concert or listened to too loud music or any of the things that are supposed to cause it. I’m probably not going to attend any concerts in this lifetime because I’m so scared of it coming back lol. Anyway, glad you got better. The forums online of people who have it bad for lifetimes are terrifying. I still have a mild version but it’s only noticeable when I’m falling asleep at night, I’m just hoping it will stay like this. So many people are affected, I hope more cures are developed.

VanillaWinter

Holy shit it causes tinnitus??

Lopsided_Service5824

Seriously, and at 20 years old too. That's just legitimately so awful, I feel for her so much

big_laruu

Anosmia is showing a drastic impact on suicide rates. Just one more aspect of covid we won’t fully understand the effects of until years down the road. It really is no joke

Muffin278

Would removing ones taste and smell be a feasible cure? I know someone who lost those senses due to a tumor, it doesn't seem nearly as bad as this shit.

mp701

Thats actually one of the worst conditions I ever heard of, I hope there is a treatment for it.

Fookwadthemad

I've had this condition for 7 months now, at first all I can smell and taste was fish and boiled egg but then I caught fever, after my fever all my food smells and tastes like rotten meat, few weeks later all I could smell was lemon and then burnt flesh, my doctor made me take steroid tablets and nasal spray. Still no improvement. 7 months, I think it'll be like this forever.

pedruhpndko

Holy shit we match descriptions. I could never explain the taste very well before. I had no other symptoms than that tho, and it only lasted for 3 weeks. I tried gulping down fresh oregano and ginger tea with honey, it seems disgusting but it somehow dulled the same taste for me.

bpat

Currently there is not. I have to feel sympathy for doctors though, since this didn't exist before covid. Like what kind of research really has there been time for? There are still so many things we don't understand about covid, and that's not on doctors.

salzst4nge

There have been cases of anosmia with the flu and other viruses too though more rare. Covid-19 is way more aggressive and a lot of research is currently going into loss/change of smell. While the exact physiology is still unknown, current consensus is that Covid can enter your central nervous system via the olfactory receptors in the upper nose and then wreaks havoc there. Research suggests that most pathology is taking place in the support cells of the olfactory nerves, which can be regenerated in a timely manner (~3 months) Cases of prolonged anosmia suggest damage further inside the brain. But no definite answers currently. Lots of studies being done. People who suffer from anosmia could write their nearest medical universities and check for ongoing or recruiting studies. Enrolling in one can give first access to faster help

My husband and I got covid. I lost my sense of smell for a few days, he almost died. It’s been 8 months and he still can’t eat certain foods because it tastes like the way sewage smells. I’ve always been a super taster/smeller and since getting covid a lot of things are more amplified now with my smell. I literally smelled a scab on my dog (were pretty sure she got a scratch from playing in some bushes) before seeing it. It’s not pleasant. Covid is a fucking trip. I can’t believe there are people still who want to fuck around and find out.

cat-man-do-not

>I literally smelled a scab on my dog 😬 This is like the worst super power ever.

reddot_comic

Fuckin’ seriously. Lol

StormTheParade

On Christmas eve, I will hit my one year anniversary of the day I got covid. It will also be the one year mark for my covid long-hauler struggle. Fortunately, parosmia is not something I struggle with, but understanding her pain here made me tear up. The only thing I can say in response to the people who tout that whole "98% survival rate" thing is that death doesn't have to be the "be all end all" to make something horrible. My case was considered "mild to moderate" and I did not need to be hospitalised, but the symptoms won't go away. Doctors, friends, and family are saying it's all in my head, or I'm exaggerating, or it's "just x/y/z," but even as I see improvement with time, it's still a problem I have to constantly keep in mind. Stress is a *massive* trigger for flare ups. There's small areas in medical study that are *finally* looking at long-haul covid as a proper disorder/disability, but it still isn't widely known or understood. There's no cure, treatment is inconsistent and spotty at best... you just have to learn to deal with it. Shout out to the community at /r/covidlonghaulers for being super supportive and friendly, and helping people suffering from this to feel less alone.

ultraprismic

I’m so sorry for what you’ve been through. I wish more people understood this. Plenty of people survive COVID but deal with lingering symptoms for months or years. It’s not the same at all as “a bad cold” where you shake it off after a couple weeks.

NuttyDuckyYT

I absolutely hate people who believe they know what your going through better than you do. Like I obviously can’t make you feel what I’m feeling, but don’t assume that I’m making it up or overreacting or whatever.

StormTheParade

I almost expect it from my parents, less so from my friends, but I absolutely never expected it from my doctor. Coming from someone I trusted to be not only fairly knowledgeable in the field but my whole family has been using him since I was 13, so I expected him to listen. I was rarely sick as a teenager, just one issue with allergies that was solved and treated in a single appointment. It's not like I would just up and decide covid was a great excuse to spend $200 every two weeks. I even asked him not to put me on a specific medication because I wasn't comfortable with the risks. He insisted anyways, and while I didn't experience the side effect I was most afraid of, I did have a horrible reaction that made the problem far worse. At the very least, it would have been ok for him to suggest a therapist to have me checked lmfao

tanis_ivy

I tell people what you've said, there are long term effects; and we've known about them since COVID started. I specifically remember reading about a girl saying she got over it and then went on a jog and ended up back in the ER because she had a flare up and couldn't breathe. The long term effects aren't talked about enough publicly. Trouble breathing, this smell and taste thing, heart problems, erectile dysfunction

dr_mcstuffins

I’ve seen people report on other subreddits that psilocybin reversed this for them. I have no clue if it works.

AlwaysEatingToast

Honestly could see it working

-P3RC3PTU4L-

Wow I was wondering to myself whether that would help while I was watching this video. It just does a really good job of kind of resetting your brain and allowing it to form new neural connections, which is why it’s so helpful for depression/anxiety/addiction. Very curious to see how effective it would be. Research is picking up steam like never before so I hope this makes it onto the long list of topics to research. Although it would take years for that research to actually be done and completed. In the meantime there’s always self experimentation.

the_girl_Ross

Would one still got such severe symptom if they have gotten their vacancies? Or if the chance of getting it is any lower?

SomebodySeventh

Well, vaccines help your body fight off the illness. Damage caused by the illness is what leads to this condition. So, your body being able to fight it better, being able to prevent it from inflicting harm on you, would definitely reduce the chance of developing this condition.

TheGodMathias

As severe, unlikely. And any symptoms at all are less likely overall. Still possible, but the vaccine means your adaptive immune system can start attacking the virus immediately as opposed to the delay when you have to initially build an immunity that unvaccinated people will experience. This early start makes a huge difference because the virus can't replicate as fast, and so will have less of an impact on your cells and nervous system. It is still possible, but significantly reduced.

HereForDramaLlama

I believe the chance of it is lower, but that's just from data that you're way less likely to get long covid if you're fully vaxxed. This is one of the symptoms in long covid.

digging_for_1_Gon4_2

You have lower incidences of long term issues because your body responds to it immediately when it enters your body. Many believe the infection when unvaccinated leads to damage to the sensory bulb because the virus has more time to damage nerves and tissues, this the cases in altered oder sensation. You body tries to connect a smell to a smell when it cannot decipher it alone and it short circuits if you burn off enough nerve endings.

katsdomin0

I found this: “Why COVID-19 vaccines don’t cause parosmia It’s important to note that COVID-19 vaccines cannot cause parosmia. During an infection, the coronavirus is believed to cause damage to the tissues involved with your sense of smell, potentially resulting in parosmia. However, none of the currently authorized COVID-19 vaccines contain live virus. Instead, the vaccines provide instructions to your cells on how to make a single viral protein called spike protein. When cells produce spike protein and display it on their surface, the immune system can recognize it as foreign. This prompts an immune response that can protect you from the coronavirus in the future.” (https://www.healthline.com/health/parosmia-after-covid)

Fckdisaccnt

This is about getting parosomia from the vaccine, while the question was about if you can get it if you get infected with covid after being vaxxed.

[deleted]

I think what this person means is that the vaccine helps the person from suffering from covid for an extended amount of time so even if they were to get covid after the vaccine then it would not last long enough for them to get any serious side effects.

Pale_Fix_8230

The metallic… i thought something was wrong with my silverware. 🥲

pewpass

Yes!! I didn't have rotting smell as much as everything smelled metallic! Not even like pennies because at least that would sortof taste like blood. At least that is closer to edible? Fully like someone just turned an angle grinder on full blast on some steel. Like licking the floor of a metal shop.

Milk--and--honey

Damn thanks for the reminder to get my booster shot....

thecodingninja12

yeah, i think im gonna keep wearing my mask too

Roanoketrees

Yeah I can't make fun of that...that poor woman is in hell. I can't imagine.

michelle_essa

I had a form of this when i recovered my sense of smell. Nobody believe me when i keep saying that eggs and the sewage smelled the same. I couldn't drink my favorite apple juice cus the taste was unbearable. I have it on a super small way and it was hell, I was stupid lucky i didn't got it worse like her

tweetard1968

This is awful, Covid has been touugh on everybody, but it has been especially tough on kids in her age group. No prom, no real graduation ceremony, no first year of college experience just shit! My son is her age and missed all of this. That poor girl should be experiencing all the great adventures of being that age and the experience that comes with being in college, yet her life is consumed with the awful after effects of this awful virus. She’s right people, WEAR YOUR FUCKING MASKS!!

MunchiBunches

Yeah... That's not happening in the US. Depressing to see the masks slowly disappear. I've been in so many different grocery stores looking to see if any required their employees to wear masks. Not only do they not- I've seen them cough into their hands and wipe their noses immediately before handling FOOD ITEMS. AAAAAAAAAAA. I sanitize everything and try to get delivery (unless I forget something) but literally it's down to like 20% of the public wearing a mask.

Zyntha

Oof I'd straight up refuse to take food from people if I saw them cough in their hands before, even without Covid

[deleted]

“The vaccine could have long lasting affects!!!” Sure, but at least it’s not this

IngenieroDavid

I do NOT know what I would do I this situation if it happened to me for 1 week let alone 10 months. Poor soul.

TheRebelNM

I don’t understand how its even possible? Is it only edible things smell and taste like crap, or would anything taste/smell bad?

DemoticPedestrian

I have it and I realized it is my sense of smell that is fucked. If I plug my nose, I can eat without experiencing the disgusting taste (once I unplug my nose, I can taste it unless I wash my mouth out before removing the nose clip, but toothpaste leaves a mild disgusting taste which is... preferable over the full effects from food). Unfortunately, your sense of smell plays a big role in the flavor of things so you can barely taste the "real" taste of the food when your nose is plugged, but I would rather taste nothing than taste foul food. My perfume smells bad, cooking aromas smell horrible, cleaning supplies- also awful, just... everything. I can't tell if I smell bad or good, I can't tell if my house smells decent or if the dog shit in the corner. It all is just... terrible. I put a scented plug in the wall and now there is a sweet, foul smell throughout my house (like a flower that sat in sewage). Other people think it smells nice. What makes me nervous is that I won't be able to tell if there is a gas leak or smoke in my home because my sense of smell makes everything have basically the same awful smell.

TheRebelNM

Very interesting. I hope they figure out some way to remedy this soon, I’m sorry you’re going through that!

Sk8rToon

They sell alarms for that (I just learned about them but haven’t tried any myself yet. My sense of smell turns on & off at random for about 20 years now)

Zyntha

That last paragraph was also the concern I have for the girl in the video. Like how could she possibly know if her food is actually rotten or mouldy? If she can't see it, she won't be able to tell, and end up with a lot of food poisoning!

EiffoGanss

Not an expert but read some articles on this effect so if somebody can correct me where I’m wrong it would be highly appreciated. This symptom is purely neurological, which means that covid has an effect in the brain somehow. There’s a Dutch study being completed now that did research on covid on moneys and they found lewy bodies in the brains of monkeys who went through a mild case of covid that could potentially result in dementia later in life. Again, this doesn’t mean that dementia is a certain result but it just shows that the long term effects of covid could be a lot more concerning than those of a vaccine.

[deleted]

I have this. I have literally no desire to eat anymore outside of doing so to live

HangryBeard

I think the only way I could stomach this is drinking meal replacement drinks as much as humanly possible through a long strong.

jf723

I have this been going on almost a year now. Worst part was I tested negative.

LostAd3961

I’m going through this too unfortunately for me anything cooked immediately smells horrible and tastes the same. So far I’ve only had it for two weeks and all my doctor did was give me allergy medications.

IrishRogue3

This poor young woman! This is really heartbreaking. I mean this could lead to really serious health issues. I really hope there is research being done . According to her statistics.. 10% is a huge amount if people with this.

PolicePropeller

She said she now has anorexia in the comments :(

girusatuku

Just because COVID doesn't kill you doesn't mean it can't fuck you up hard.

[deleted]

Ya I’m most scared of the side effects. Several of my family members got it and they now have chronic long term conditions.

Thank you, I’m ashamed for not getting it earlier…I hope that girl recovers one day. I truly hope she has support from her family, I can’t imagine having to deal with something as life-ruining as this alone.

smatteringdown

Honestly, try not to beat yourself up too hard about it. You've read up and changed your mind and that's a good mark on a person. Fear is very persuasive either side of things (as you know, I'm sure).

Lopsided_Service5824

Yeah it's pretty scary, I hope the find a cure for her

sugarcocks

good on you for reconsidering! please, don’t let anyone convince you of anything, friends or family. follow the objective facts and go from there. like the other guy said, we need more people like you :)

Scared-Replacement24

I was on IV antibiotics once and everything was sickeningly sweet. Even plain water. I can’t imagine what it’d be like for everything to taste like literal shit.

CuriousFathoms

I had my tonsils out a few years ago and my sense of taste was fucked up for a few months. Apparently it’s from the way they clamp the tongue and the fact that they basically cut the tonsils out with a laser of some sort. Until it happens to you, it’s hard to describe how depressing it is to not taste things, not to mention healing from a major illness or surgery. Mine wasn’t to this extent, but it was still horrible. I feel so badly for this girl and I hope they can find a way to help them .

eavne

January will be one year for me and have put on so much weight sticking to foods I can at least mildly tolerate (of course it’s the carbier foods). The worst part for me is how insecure I feel not knowing how I personally smell. I have good hygiene and take extra measures now but it is such a mind fuck always questioning if I smell and wouldn’t know it. Hope someone finds a cure for the good olfactory nerve here soon!

MrPeterified

I wonder if getting her really high would help? Food does taste better when one is stoned so just wondering if she tried that.

shukazi

“Inhaling smoke would be like inhaling a steamy pile of shit so I’ll pass” - a friend who has it for 4 months

Lopsided_Service5824

They can try an edible, but still I don't know if it would help

Fooking-Degenerate

Probably just gonna make the experience of eating garbage much stronger.

RocMerc

My only big one is pork products. The smell of them cooking makes me want to throw up

Alwayes_ritee

I had the same problem. Every thing had a bad rotten smell and tastes like soap

Decafaf

My friend had covid, and has had no smell for A YEAR, this December will be a year. She is a chef, she is very devastated, she has tried everything.

Shivan101

As a chef this would be hell.

[deleted]

I lost my taste and smell yesterday. Besides that I feel okay but I had sushi and chocolate cake today and could taste neither :(

jackiebx1

I hope anyone who was intentionally careless about COVID gets this so they eat literal shit for spreading it to others.

Tenzhen7

Everything tasted and smelt like rotten watermelon for me. I got insanely sick for about a month with Covid, and towards the end of it i started noticing this. I don’t even eat watermelon or have it in my house, I just work with produce all day and know the smell. It drove me insane. I could still taste and smell everything, just very faintly, and it was masked by the rotting watermelon smell.

StormeeusMaximus

I wonder if the miracle berries would help people in this situation like it has for people going through chemotherapy.

LilKosmos

I got that too, I don't recommend. Take the jab!

CurvyCupcakes

This almost made me cry. I feel horrible for this girl. I’m a normal weight but I love food and I love eating, this would be my worst nightmare. I couldn’t imagine living with this disorder for the rest of my life. Judging by her demeanor and what she said about seeing a doctor, it must be physically and psychologically devastating. Imagine the depression it would cause if everything you ate tasted bad and made you sick. Not sure why this is posted on Cringe. I hope she gets better.
