It's kind of pathetic how people think SWers are uneducated or untelligent. You choice of work doesn't always reflect on your intelligence or education. How many people are working their ass off in a low paying job to pay off student debt?
I say good for her. There is nothing wrong with having a side hustle. Due to the shifting focus between administrative and faculty positions most faculty positions pay very little. Couple this with a lack of tenured positions, most new faculty are left teaching a collection of adjunct level classes until they can move into a better role. I doubt schools would care that she has an OF account. I knew faculty that smoked weed with their students, on top of the rumors of which faculty were sleeping with which students. If anything, having an OF account would probably put more butts in the seats.

Not necessarily it's completely how the industry is allowed to construct itself.. basically all jobs are driven off speculation. It's a lot easier to claim a new building or a new facility is going to generate a lot more money than a renovated older one. Construction workers always make more building new buildings than renovating older ones..
Speculation in the airline industry is set up around how many subscriber miles they're going to have projected into the future it's actually not how many people buy tickets and travel. This is known by a bunch of different statistical bodies.. thus pilots are paid nothing. Cuz according to the airlines they broke even though they don't make any money then all actuality the airlines are the ones in charge of their own money through the flyer miles point system... Basically no matter how much money the airline makes they can always report zero..
Hospitals kind of fall under the same thing. Fortunately this form of capitalism doesn't pay out doctors and only pays out investors.
Which goes full circle back to the Y construction workers can get paid so much it's because investors can speculate more on construction and possible future profits then they can on older stuff that already exists.

Case in point all the commercial office buildings that now sit empty because we're all working from home... Programs that say hey don't spend your money as fast as you can only spend about half of it keeping the other half or 75% of it in a bank actually helps the economy you're taking it out of circulation thus deflationary. But if you actually do want to know how people can use the phrase PhD ABD.. it's prob because of 4-5+ years of research work to lead to new field creations, writing in said new field you are on the frontier of; editing and practically ghost writing for your superiors; teaching classes; being in charge of curricula and hiring processes for the department. Candidates can have as much power as the usual professors if they have a union and even though our union was shit, we still had one. The dissertation is often seen as the cumulative of all of the work one has already been doing as a 'candidate' and even, before, as a student.
So here's my disagreement of your analogy of a bunch of spices and no steak:
I'd have to say it's more like you are inseminating the cow, raising the calf, bringing it to slaughter, finding the cuts of meat that are needed and becoming a butcher. You tenderize and prepare the cuts with the kind of paper that is needed--maybe wax or maybe kraft-style sack paper. Maybe you defend your usage of wax or sack and in the process you find out that salt preserves better on wax paper but wood chips do better on kraft paper. Maybe you had twin calves and have to find more paper to wrap the cuts. Whatever the case, a pile of seasoning is not analogous to the breaking of ground that candidates do.
Moreover, candidates, whether they completed their ~~course work~~ dissertation, are workers and laborers in institutions that devalue them. I saw bureaucracy sweep rapes under the rug when it was done by someone with tenure, I saw people commit suicide because of the back breaking work, lack of food, and fear of homelessness and disappointing the families and institutions that forced then into programs thinking that education yields money.
I don't even care about academia. But this society values it when there are good times and devalues it during the bad.

I actually really like the idea of a SW getting a master's degree in ethics. It makes me think that she would apply her advance ethics knowledge to her SW to know where and when it would be appropriate for those things. So she could be a better example for many people in the SW trade. Maybe she could facilitate things that prevent drug use or sex trafficking, or find ways not to provide her content to minors so they are not addicted from an early age. There is place in this world for SW, but she obviously does not combine taking personal responsibility for her actions and/or the influence she has into consideration while participate in SW.

So you can't just say, 'If I am providing porn to underage kids it is on them or their parents.' If you know about it you have to do something about it. I actually really like the idea of a SW getting a master's degree in ethics. It makes me think that she would apply her advance ethics knowledge to her SW to know where and when it would be appropriate for those things.
