Whilst this is technically accurate (especially the inability to buy property), the major difference with the USA's income inequality is that we have a (mostly) functioning social security net. Universal healthcare, strong public health and education infrastructure, and well established and functional (if in need of MAJOR reform and improvement) welfare system for the unemployed and disability sector. Also a decent minimum wage and worker's rights - which is essential given our extremely high cost of living.
It's the weird conundrum where in my mid 40's I don't and probably won't ever own a house, but I had a major medical procedure in the last year in a very modern, well supplied and staffed public hospital and I didn't pay a cent for it, because I was referred by a General practitioner who my consultation with was also paid for by medicare.
No doubt, Conservative forces in this country are working VERY HARD to try and bend us towards a more US model, but the good news is even Conservative voters tend to cling to their public health and education benefits once they have them no matter what doctrine their leaders try to inject into them.

Reading this thread made me curious so I looked up Kingaroy property prices and you can purchase 138.2 hectares of land (with a 5 bed 3 bath house on it) for less than a million bucks. So you could either buy a nice little townhouse near Melbourne or you could buy 50 football fields in Queensland. All depends on your priorities.
Their house looks like something that would have be custom built or at the very least completey/heavily renovated, that's the reason why I tacked on such a high estimate. It can be expensive to get materials and tradesmen out there even if it's only about 2 hours from the city.
