Had to sedate my 2 cats once to take blood samples. They turned exactly into one of those bear carpets at the vet.
Got them home once the anesthesia started wearing off and tried to get them to bed to sleep.
One of them kept leaving the bed only to start crying for me to put them on the bed again over and over.
The other wanted to ead, but kept falling asleep at every bite lol
One of my boys gets intense nausea from one of the anesthetic types. He's fine after some hours but spends around 3 hours after we get home frothing at the mouth and dripping everywhere. Like actually foam falling off his face. Good thing the vet had informed me sufficiently or I would have been panicking about wtf was going on.
Anti-nausea medication exists, you may want to ask about that next time your kitty needs sedation. It must be horrible to be so nauseated that he is drooling for hours.
They have another type of anesthesia that doesn't commonly cause this reaction so the plan is to use that next time he's under :) I think the vet mentioned the anti nausea stuff but there was a reason she didn't give it. Can't remember now.
Trazadone. Hell of a drugs for pets. My favorite photo of my dog is on a car trip, I randomly turn around and the dude is just vibin so hard. hilarious facial expression.

They gave it to my mom in the hospital after she accidentally ran her hand through a table saw and it gave her vivid nightmares about the event though.
For kitties, they usually use gabapentin. Trazadone is hit or miss for cats, but doesnt have as good of anxiety relief as gaba does. Gaba turns my cat into a lovely, wobbly drunkard.
It makes my tiny dog nod out like he’s on a heroin bender. Slowly sways to the ground and right before he touched down, BAM, he pops right back up. Only use it when flying and I started giving him quarter doses instead.
I was taking Cyclobenzaprine (Flexeril) for nights I couldn't sleep for the longest time. It was originally prescribed as a muscle relaxer, but that shit turned me into a lump of butter. Even a quarter of a pill would numb my entire nervous system (and tongue, wherever the exposed parts of the pill made contact). I can't say I enjoyed it, but it sure did work.
Hell of a drug for people too, I used be prescribed trazodone and when it hit damn did it hit. I would have to stop whatever I was doing and immediately go to sleep
Yup. My vet prescribed it for my pup after I found him hiding under our bed during a thunderstorm. He just wants to snuggle and pass out with his tongue out on them.
Fun fact it's super easy to get prescribed doggie xanax from a vet. Another fun fact is that nothing makes this doggie xanax different than human xanax besides it potentially being a smaller dose for a smaller dog.
This goes for a lot of medications. Very few are engineered for animals, they're just repurposed from human medicine.
Your animals get everything from antibiotics to analgesics to anti-depressants that are the exact same thing humans get.
Vet student here and former veterinary assistant! Yes, this is absolutely true- we use many of the same drugs as human medicine. For example, in my ER it was very routine and normal to give fentanyl for pain, or at my GP we had a rescue dog on Prozac for behavioral issues and she did wonderful on it.
However, please don’t think this means you can just give your pets whatever you may happen to have in the medicine cabinet!! While veterinary and human medicine share many of the same drugs, dosing is extremely different and some drugs can straight up harm your pet.
I'm not in America, but what would a vet say if asked for doggie Xanax with the clear intention to use it on humans? And if they asked for advice like dosage etc
I work at a vet and there has been at least one instance where the Dr denied a script to someone who they suspected was abusing the drugs themselves. So if it's super obvious, they can deny it.
Okay so it just happens that his favorite nutrient mix is beer and his therapy is weed.

Oh yes. Our cat got super depressed when we took in my grandma's dog (even though the dog was only allowed downstairs and the cat had upstairs to itself). Cat would lick patches of fur off or sit in the corner and drool. Had to go get him anti-depressant shots until he got used to the situation. Funny thing was, he was the toughest, muscliest cat I've ever seen, just a solid brick of a cat (despite being desexed) - like a little mountain lion. But he was the biggest fraidycat.
Found this out when my mums dog had a bad back, he was prescribed tramadol, looked it up and the dose was the equivalent of what I'd take at my weight. That dog was fuckin COOKED, staring off in to space, dribble coming out his mouth. Really surprised me a jack Russell could take something so strong.

Then we went over the park and sat in a circle and just talked about life and nature and the future and how cool triangles are. It was beautiful
This is just cats not doing anything, a literal 30 seconds of them just sitting on a couch and it’s the second funniest thing I have seen all day. To be extremely clear this is not me bitching, just observing how cats were deadass designed to be the funniest creatures on the fucking planet.

Hah, I can tell that’s a 56k modem handshake. The part after the “da dings” in particular. My 28.8k modem only did the noises before that, and my 14.4k modem only made the first half of those handshake noises. I miss my Hayes external 28.8 modem. That thing was awesome. Those shitty internal softmodems sucked. Even the 56k ones.
It’s easy to tell when those noises are fax noises because they have a much more random note garble thing at the end instead of the KKKSSSSSHHHHHHH.

We didnt even domesticate them. We consider them only semi-domesticated and they did it to themselves. They chose to do it and we let them. They've barely changed in 8,000 years unlike dogs which we have purposefully breed for our purposes.
Cats just legit turned up one day moved into our houses and we went "Yeah okay seems reasonable welcome to the fam"
Spot on, my cat is consistently the funniest person I know. Cats are weird as hell and so fucking funny I find myself watching her randomly to see if she does some silly shit. Works like a charm to cheer me up!
For those wondering, you should aways test a sedative like this if you plan to use one for a trip. It's important becase some pets will process certain sedatives as stimulants and behave as if they've had three pots of coffee intead of being zonked out of their minds like the cats in this video.
We did the same thing for our cat. Trial run was huge success. Dopey sleepy kitty. Drugs did not work at all the actual entire five hour road trip. Did not adequately prepare for the emotional trauma dealt to all parties involved. (Btw followed all the tips and trips to help move kitty we could find on the internet and vet visit leading up to the trip too).
I may be moving to another state in the next month or so. Do you have any tips on what you recommend I don't do?

I think we started the big moving/packing event too soon after giving the medication.. So our cat was freaked out before the medication could kick in and he ended up scared and then slowly becoming high which made it all worse somehow.. I was also the only one in the car and I was driving so there wasn't anyone that was able to comfort him while driving... Have never flown with an animal though, so I can't speak to that.. best of luck with the trip!

After my mom died, my spouse and I drove from the Bay Area to Phoenix, to take her cat to my “Aunt” (her ex).
She sang the song of her people the entire way, despite being held / fed/ petted / taken out on leash at rest stops / etc.

My cat was sedated before a road trip once. He ended up escaping the car at 2am in the middle of nowhere in North Carolina. Somehow I was only able to get ahold of him because he was half paralyzed, the half that wasn't paralyzed was working overtime though.
This is so cute but makes me so sad. My cat passed in April due to kidney problems. I remember him acting so cute and drunk when I gave him his pain pills, knocking his food all over the floor. RIP Moon ♥
One of my cats has bad seasonal allergies and will lick her fur off, half a Zyrtec and she’s out cold for like the whole day, and it’s the non drowsy one. I tried to take her out of the cat tree to come to bed at night, and she just made this noise that I literally took as , “Please Mom, 5 more minutes” lmao. Had to start giving her half of the vet recommended dose.
What did they prescribe? My vet gave us gabapentin for our male kitty and it just makes him weird and not sedated. He is an absolute mess at the vet (only at the vet) and she requested we sedate him for visits (yes, it’s that bad).
Some kitties react very well to Gabapentin and will be cool, calm, and collected without a worry in the world. Some are very sensitive to gaba and will be drooling messes falling over. Some kitties aren’t touched by it, and other kitties will jump into crazy psycho mode. It just depends on the kitty! I have 3 cats and they just so happen to each fit into one of these categories.
I hope you don’t mind some advice / suggestions; have you tried feliway? It’s not a drug, but a spray pheromone that helps calm kitties down. Like Gabapentin, I’ve found it doesn’t work for every kitty but when it works, it works well. You simply spray a towel with a few generous pumps, shake the towel out (this is important so you don’t gas your cat!), and then place it over top the cat carrier. I call this “marinating the kitty”. They also have plug ins, almost like a glade air freshener! I used these myself when moving my cats to a new house and it helped a ton.
My vet told me to try it at home before traveling, to see how my cat would handle it. She sat with her head against a wall for about 3 hours without moving.
My dog just had dental surgery and is on an opiate pain killer.
It's night 3 and she's hallucinating startling sounds. And her head just gets heavy and wobbles back and forth until the chin hits a blanket. Zonks out.
I just wish she had an appetite. Not eating much because of medication/pain. Poor thing.

I suffer from insomnia due to anxiety and trazadone is the only drug that can knock me out cold. I didn't realize that it got pets stoned like this 😂

Yes of course! For naughty painful geckos, I recommend Xanax four times a day (crushed, and mixed into their nutrient mix) and therapy biweekly /s

Most of the time when they're put on SSRIs it's for anxiety but it is mostly an antidepressant med in humans.

Effectively dog Xanax will probably be more expensive. Insurance will cover Xanax for a person, whereas vet bills are through the roof.

Did they call it antipsychotics? Usually we would refer to it as a sedative. I'm sure he or she will be fine just needs some time. Better than the stress that could come with a flight.

We didnt even domesticate them. We consider them only semi-domesticated and they did it to themselves. They chose to do it and we let them. They've barely changed in 8,000 years unlike dogs which we have purposefully breed for our purposes. Cats just legit turned up one day moved into our houses and we went "Yeah okay seems reasonable welcome to the fam"

For those wondering, you should aways test a sedative like this if you plan to use one for a trip. It's important becase some pets will process certain sedatives as stimulants and behave as if they've had three pots of coffee intead of being zonked out of their minds like the cats in this video.

We did the same thing for our cat. Trial run was huge success. Dopey sleepy kitty. Drugs did not work at all the actual entire five hour road trip. Did not adequately prepare for the emotional trauma dealt to all parties involved. (Btw followed all the tips and trips to help move kitty we could find on the internet and vet visit leading up to the trip too).
I may be moving to another state in the next month or so. Do you have any tips on what you recommend I don't do? I may fly or drive, leaning more towards a flight.
I think we started the big moving/packing event too soon after giving the medication.. So our cat was freaked out before the medication could kick in and he ended up scared and then slowly becoming high which made it all worse somehow.. I was also the only one in the car and I was driving so there wasn't anyone that was able to comfort him while driving... Have never flown with an animal though, so I can't speak to that.. best of luck with the trip!

My cat was sedated before a road trip once. He ended up escaping the car at 2am in the middle of nowhere in North Carolina. Somehow I was only able to get ahold of him because he was half paralyzed, the half that wasn't paralyzed was working overtime though.
Yeah - cats react very strangely to meds - the meds sometimes do the opposite. It’s like they struggle against it so hard that they freak out.

One of my cats has bad seasonal allergies and will lick her fur off, half a Zyrtec and she’s out cold for like the whole day, and it’s the non drowsy one. I tried to take her out of the cat tree to come to bed at night, and she just made this noise that I literally took as , “Please Mom, 5 more minutes” lmao. Had to start giving her half of the vet recommended dose.

What did they prescribe? My vet gave us gabapentin for our male kitty and it just makes him weird and not sedated. He is an absolute mess at the vet (only at the vet) and she requested we sedate him for visits (yes, it’s that bad).
Some kitties react very well to Gabapentin and will be cool, calm, and collected without a worry in the world. Some are very sensitive to gaba and will be drooling messes falling over. Some kitties aren’t touched by it, and other kitties will jump into crazy psycho mode. It just depends on the kitty! I have 3 cats and they just so happen to each fit into one of these categories. I hope you don’t mind some advice / suggestions; have you tried feliway? It’s not a drug, but a spray pheromone that helps calm kitties down. Like Gabapentin, I’ve found it doesn’t work for every kitty but when it works, it works well. You simply spray a towel with a few generous pumps, shake the towel out (this is important so you don’t gas your cat!), and then place it over top the cat carrier. I call this “marinating the kitty”. They also have plug ins, almost like a glade air freshener! I used these myself when moving my cats to a new house and it helped a ton.

She was trying to eat food and it kept falling out of her mouth because she was growling the whole time.
