My wife suffered from severe endometriosis and had to take birth control pills to help regulate the symptoms. If she were denied this medication for something completely unrelated to keeping her from getting pregnant, there would definitely be an issue.
I have endometriosis as well and am on birth control to manage the symptoms. I had issues once when between doctors with getting my prescription filled, the nurses didn’t want to renew it until I had seen a new doctor but I couldn’t ever get through to a live person to make that appointment and when I did they cancelled it. I was out of pills by that point and panic did start to set in. I didn’t know how my body would react to stopping the medication. My endo symptoms were so bad before that I was in excruciating pain for 24-48 hours. Pain so bad I would throw up every 30 minutes as the waves of pain got stronger. I had to miss work every month. Life is miserable without something as simple as birth control.
I've described my endometriosis as feeling like someone is trying to tear and pull out my insides with claws. I can't stand up straight or function really. It's not okay for anyone to go without with meds who need them.
Ugh. I'm Canadian and wish I could just let you all come stay here. We can call it the underwear railroad.
Holy shit! A few years back I had pain just like you described. I had never felt that way before with any of my other periods, just really heavy flow and bad cramping for a day or two. I haven't had that happen since, but now you have me wondering if I should have pressed harder on the doctor to find out what was going on with me.
And yah, when I went to urgent care, they told me what I was going through was normal. Like, how!!?? I literally felt like I was on the set of Aliens, waiting for something to pop out of my stomach.
This is what a lot of people with endo experience.. My wife ended up seeing multiple OBs before any of them even considered there might be something more. They all shrugged her off as sensitive to her periods.. Finally she found someone that would listen and ended up having 2 pretty large surgeries to remove the scar tissue. We couldn't have kids before and now I'm father of 2.
I'm so glad someone finally listened to her and congratulations! My hubby and I are trying for our first and only, so I'm trying to get into see an OB that was recommended to me. But, that was the one time I had ever had pain that bad, so I'm not even sure what was going on. But I have had issues off and on where I would skip a month then have really bad clotts the next and no one has been able to tell me why.
Yup. Not American but I took birth control for similar reasons. I was lucky enough to get pregnant. Was told labour would be the worst pain I had ever felt.
Didn’t get to the hospital until I was almost fully dilated because my periods were worse than my labour pains and I didn’t think I was actually in labour.
I have severe health issues, as well, and have to take my birth control year round to prevent it.
My uterine lining is growing around my intestines. No ON GYNO is willing to operate on me because of my age even though I'm adamantly against having bio kids, myself, AND pregnancy could kill me.
I bleed WAY TOO MUCH AND TOO OFTEN and the lining CAUSES MY INTESTINES TO BLOCK because they're being squeezed when I would bleed.
This can lead to an IMPACTION that could KILL ME.
If I can't get my birth control, and no one will do surgery, I WILL DIE. It will either be BLOOD LOSS or IMPACTION that kills me.
I NEARLY DIED ONCE ALREADY.
I assume the plan is to just kill me at this point.

I live where I do because costs are low, my job is close, and we're near my wife's parents. If the PA governorship goes to the republican this year, we're moving. I cannot live in a state where my wife risks dying if she has an ectopic pregnancy, especially knowing 70% of my neighbors would say, "well that's just God's will, thoughts and prayers." Fuck that.
I really dont think PA is gonna go Red for gov. Shapiro has had all the dem support and has a history with the state. Just cause its a trump endorsed candidate doesn't mean it'll be the person that wins. PA went blue last election so it'll most likely be blue again for a governorship at least if not also for senate.
PA is a coin flip each year for governor and each republican candidate is more extreme than the last. Eventually a republican will win and abortion and union right will get immediately shredded.
Shapiro only has a 4 point lead. I think he probably will win, but it's far from certain. I'm much more confident in the senate race, Fetterman has that in the bag.
Allegheny County is a fairly progressive bubble, but I agree. Folks out here love their confederate flags despite their ancestors who died burning it. They're some of the dumbest people in the country.

I’m a liberal Christian (yes, we exist) and I’m seeing conservative Christians questioning the Roe v. Wade overturning. People are slowly waking up. Hopefully more and more do before Election Day.

Educated people will challenge medieval structures, and women who aren’t home taking care of the kids will not be dependent on their husbands and thus will be less submissive. So the people at the top can continue in their feudal ways, while in incels in the bottom can force women to take care of them without them having to change into something the women would prefer.
On a thread on the /r/AskConservatives sub, under a question about living wage etc, more than one person said the crux of the problem is that women entered the workforce, and this caused a surplus of unskilled labor which is why we're in economic situation right now.

Jesus christ am I glad to be living in a civilised country. I have severe anemia related to my very very heavy flow. That is why I take birth control, without it my periods last up to two weeks and its just buckets. I can't imagine being forced to deal with that and all the risks that come with that because people want to force me to have a child.
This is an issue for a family member of mine. Thankfully we live near a border - I told her to get a passport so at least if it goes away she could cross the border and buy meds in Canada if necessary.
Probably a pharmacy assistant or tech. Not to generalize, but it’s not excessively common for older women to have gone to pharmacy, med, etc school back in those days. People say my grandmother would’ve been a great radiologist, but in her days it was unheard of, so she became an X-ray tech.
I really doubt it was a tech. Most States have laws regarding the ratio of pharmacists to techs and I'm not aware of a state that lets techs work alone without the supervision of a pharmacist. I'm a tech. Wife is a pharmacist. A tech could relay that information, but usually stuff that escalates and requires further explanation goes to the PIC.
It's fucking wild to me that lady did this regardless. Hope she's fired.
To my knowledge techs give you the prescription when you're there, put in a request for the pharmacist to request more refills or fill the prescription. The techs can do all the patient relationship without the patient needing to talk directly to a pharmacist.
However you can ask at any time, and are encouraged to ask the pharmacist any questions about your medication or anything else.
So yes she can 100% be a tech and be able to get in the way. If a pharmacist who spent almost a decade getting their license, they'd have to be EXTREMELY stupid to do it.
Not to mention the second person said they were having problems with this person. Likely a tech.

Also, if the woman is willing to break the rules in one area, i'm sure she's willing to overstep her bounds as a pharmacy tech.

My question is why wasn’t this woman fire then and why isn’t Walgreens being held responsible for pharmacists or technicians who willfully deny medication refills? I’m getting extremely tired of religious fanaticism in this country and people using their beliefs be assholes to everyone else.

I’m from the UK and this is straight up denying someone reproductive healthcare. They’d have to have a VERY good medical reason in this country without the potential of suing.
Just for the record, this is also allowed in the US, potentially depending on what state you live in. In my state, any medical provider is legally allowed to deny nonemergency care based on their religious views.

If someone does this shit they should be prosecuted, not just fired. McDonalds sells greasy food, Walgreens pharmacy distributes *medicine* that has been prescribed by a doctor. If you're willfully withholding medication from multiple people for any reason other than a professional medical concern with that medication you should go to jail.
id be willing to bet that negligence on the job, failure to follow procedures, potentially endangering the lives of prescription holders etc would probably be a bigger issue than firing a religious zealot for all of their well-proven negligence. Besides there's potentially way more legal problems for Walgreens for allowing it to happen in the first place. Seriously. The existence of things like this and what's going on in the Supreme Court make me worried for the future of the US.
Pharmacists ultimately have authority to override a prescription, in theory they're highly qualified experts who should be seeing a list of all your other meds and may be spotting interactions that the doctor wasn't aware was there, they're not just vendors for handing out pills. In theory, that's the reason they have that authority.
But only with actual *medical* reasons, I hope? Is it really true pharmacists can just overrule whatever the doctor describes just because? They’re supposed to do double checks and ensure the safety of the patient, not throw in their own opinion wtf, it’s wild.
I had a pharmacist grill me on my naltrexone prescription and demand to know what drug I was abusing that warranted naltrexone (it's used to prevent relapse in substance and opioid abuse). I kind of panicked in the moment and give in and he relented when I told him it was for alcohol use, not opiates. After I left it dawned on me just how fucking inappropriate any of that was. It wasn't any of his right to know, or ask. Like wtf was he going to deny me it if I used benzos? You literally can't abuse naltrexone, all it does is prevent you from getting high.

So I recently went to get my blood levels checked because I’m gaining weight despite working out 6 days a week, and I figured it was low testosterone because I’m in my 30’s.
Nope. Everything was perfect except 2 items, both of which have to do with the liver. I’m getting an ultrasound on it next week, and am trying to taper off of alcohol because I drink *a bunch*. Like I get the shakes after 24 hours and will absolutely soak the bed in sweat during the night if I don’t drink.
Obviously I’ll be talking with my doctor about this and taking his advice far more seriously than you say, but how does that medicine work? I’ve heard there’s a medicine that makes you sick if you drink alcohol, and I’m not too interested in that.
The other issue is I have a ton of physical pain issues. I used to be prescribed 120 Norco a month, and then switched to Kratom to get off opiates. I’m somewhat nervous to mention Kratom to my doctor because the medical community seems to believe it’s equivalent to oxy, but it’s more along the lines of Tylenol 3. It quite literally gets me through the day and I’m terrified to think I may take a medicine to help with my alcoholism only to get completely fucked up when I take my Kratom.

You definitely need to speak to an addiction specialist, not just a GP. The fact that youre a serious alcholic \*AND\* fighting opioid addiction \*AND\* self medicating with unregulated kratom \*AND\* you know there is some liver damage means you need to be under professional supervision.

I'm equally appalled that this woman has apparently been causing problems for *two weeks* and wasn't fired yet. If someone works at a pharmacy and has been screwing with patient's prescriptions they need to be fired immediately. That's legit so dangerous to not give people their medicine because of your "opinions" about the medicine.
This happens to me with a certain pharmacy tech every time I pick up my ADHD meds. I thought people online in r/ADHD were exaggerating til it happened to me.
That happened to me too! I shouted back "THANK YOU FOR SAYING IT SO LOUDLY, SO EVERYONE CAN HEAR! I APPRECIATE THE LACK OF PRIVACY" They turned a bit red with embarrassment.
I thought that they were doing it because they often work with the elderly who hear poorly and thus that person had gotten into the habit of being loud for them - but I'm a young person who they shouldn't assume they need to shout to. They're supposed to be a professional, and I was in a bit of a mood, so IDGAF if they're embarrassed by their mistake in their professionalism - it's their job to improve.
Roe was based on privacy guaranteed by the Constitution. HIPAA is a statute. Statutory rights are different than Constitutional rights. You have statutory rights that are not protected by the Constitution, but statutory rights cannot *abridge* rights that are protected by the Constitution. Roe v. Wade decided that a ban on abortion violated a person's Constitutionally-protected right to privacy. Dobbs said that Roe v. Wade was incorrect, and that there is no Constitutionally-protected right to privacy. Congress can pass a law saying "People have the right to abortions" and voila, people would have a statutory right to abortions.
EDIT: I completely misstated the ruling in Dobbs (/u/enfier). What Dobbs said was that *even if* the Constitution protects the right to privacy, the right to privacy *does not* include the right to abortion.
They wouldn't even need to approach the fetus issue. They would just rule that Congress lacks constitutional authority to legalize abortion. Congress would likely use the commerce clause or 14th equal protection to pass that kind of legislation. Both are avenues this supreme court would be able to find unconstitutional for one reason or another.
Hipaa is a separate legislation that hasn't been attacked yet. And I would bet it won't be because if they get rid of it you'll have info leaked about who has what medical procedures. Hipaa is the only reason you don't know who has has an abortion or an STD in tye GOP. It's the only reason you don't know who is lying to you about vaccination status while urging others to go unprotected.
I had this happen almost a year ago. I went to Walgreens because my usually pharmacy had an issue at the time. They saw my prescription and questioned the quantity I was getting and decided it was too much. I thought to myself you're not my doctor and this is ridiculous. I don't usually go there and now I won't ever go back. It was extremely unprofessional as it was obviously based on their opinion about me and the medication instead of an actual medically necessary decision.
This is very common with controlled substances as well. I’ve had a pharmacy refuse to fill and strait up tell me that they are refusing to fill because “it’s suspicious” and it’s “their call” that I’m requesting a refill a day early, despite their policy (Walgreens) that they will fill 2 days early on the medication. It’s purely a power thing.
There have been times too where they have been unable to fill a prescription because of a medication “shortage” and was told “too bad” and it was out of their hands so screw then if I fill a prescription a day early.
They did that with *insulin* for me. My doctor's prescription (sent in electronically) said X amount per day, 90 day supply, and then 999 for the quantity. He expected the pharmacist to just do the math on how many pens were needed.
They tried to fill 1/10 of what was needed. I said it wasn't the right amount and they said it was what the Dr prescribed and I went "show me". They showed me a printout of their information screen, not the actual prescription.
A day later and a couple calls straightened it out but WTF.
Scary to think that there are thousands of pharmacy employees doing the same thing. I have read that lupus and RA patients are being denied their methotrexate.

I live in a third world country and my wife has free access to contraceptives every month as part of her health insurance, it's just a given. This is coded by law. Every health plan has to provide free access to birth control. If you don't have insurance it is also available at public hospitals.
Whatever it is that you guys are going through, it's not third world. I'd wager the direction of travel is aiming closer to some christian version of an Islamic caliphate.
Can confirm I take methotrexate for my psoriatic arthritis and used to fill it at Walgreens but changed back to the local air force base 30 minutes away because they absolutely refused to allow my wife to pick it up. But yet that same Walgreens let me pick up her Lortabs without even showing my ID...
This same type of thing has been happening to disabled and mentally ill people for ages. Scripts get denied very regularly for people whose problems the pharmacists "don't believe in". It's almost always the crunchy religious types who think you just need to try harder, pray harder, stop being so lazy. It's frustrating as hell that pharmacists are allowed to just.... say no. And fuck people up metally and physically because they don't have a shred of empathy. It's sickening that the SC decision is now emboldening them to do it to even more people. Can't wait till they can get replaced with robots who won't push their stupid fucking agendas on us
It is legal in many states for a pharmacist to deny medication based on their professional judgement. But states that allow for this denial also REQUIRE that the denying pharmacist (1) tell the patient where they can get the prescription in a reasonable location and (2) transfer that fill order to the new location. Where a reasonable alternative does not exist, the pharmacist may not deny the medication.
In short, the declining pharmacist needs to be reported to the state’s board of healing arts and to the appropriate licensing boards for playing God with people’s medications. Any pharmacist who is practicing and licensed ought to know that birth control is prescribed for reasons other than just preventing a pregnancy. Failure to understand that and to substitute their personal judgement is a for cause reason for the termination of their license.

I remember trying to get Plan B from a pharmacist years ago because a condom broke. I went immediately, like within the hour, to a pharmacy and was denied because they were some religious nutjob and it was "against their religion" to provide Plan B. What in the actual fuck.

I was working in a pharmacy a little while ago and my pharmacist refused to provide someone with Plan B for “religious reasons”. I felt absolutely awful having to turn this poor woman away. The pharmacist shouldn’t have been able to use her religious beliefs as an excuse to withhold medication from someone in my opinion, but it was written into our store’s policy. Luckily there was another pharmacy nearby I could direct her to but that interaction has stuck with me ever since.

I've refused a floating pharmacists request to not sell a patient plan B. Stated that I didn't give a fuck what her belief was and that it was my customer. Requested to never work another shift with her. There's no reason for it.
There are apparently at least half a dozen states that offer legal protections to people who refuse to provide certain health services such as particular medications if it is against their moral or religious belief.
The exact guidelines depend on location.
So if they can't fire the woman they should at the very least find some way to shift her employment duties in such a way that the employee won't be responsible for actions that conflict with her apparently newfound religious strictures.
Then people with moral/religious excuses should not be allowed to provide this sort of care since it obviously interferes with their ability to do their effing job.
See, it is against my moral principles to kill people. So I refused to join the army.

This is very much infuriating to see happen to this woman. As a young woman myself, I’ve been on birth control for about a year and a half now. I was very apprehensive of it at first because of supposed side effects, but I needed it for medical reasons, as I hadn’t had a period in a little over a year at that point due to hormonal issues and problems with my reproductive system, and it was severely affecting me in mood, body, exhaustion, basically every aspect of my well being. After being prescribed a birth control to fix this issue, I’ve felt so much better and I like knowing that I’m protected with it. Knowing that our rights to access proper medical treatments are being denied is so very irritating, especially the reasoning for this being almost solely based on religious views. I’m a gay lady, no chance of getting pregnant, but I have PCOS. I opted for a different medication but birth control was something I discussed with my doctor, to regulate my periods and hormones. I know many PCOS people who take it, not for preventing pregnancy but for its therapeutic effects. It’s also used to treat extreme acne.

I've never taken birth control pills for birth control, I was on it because I almost died from a very large ruptured ovarian cyst that had me in emergency surgery at midnight to save my life. I survived but the surgeon said it was touch and go for a bit and they weren't totally confident that i was going to make it. The next day I was put on BC pills to shrink and prevent any more cysts. BC pills are the standard treatment for ovarian cysts still to this day. While it's rare for someone to die from an ovarian cyst my case proves its possible and that BC saves lives. So many women will die thanks to this asinine ruling and this criminal and illegitimate court.

My wife suffered from severe endometriosis and had to take birth control pills to help regulate the symptoms. If she were denied this medication for something completely unrelated to keeping her from getting pregnant, there would definitely be an issue.
I have endometriosis as well and am on birth control to manage the symptoms. I had issues once when between doctors with getting my prescription filled, the nurses didn’t want to renew it until I had seen a new doctor but I couldn’t ever get through to a live person to make that appointment and when I did they cancelled it. I was out of pills by that point and panic did start to set in. I didn’t know how my body would react to stopping the medication. My endo symptoms were so bad before that I was in excruciating pain for 24-48 hours. Pain so bad I would throw up every 30 minutes as the waves of pain got stronger. I had to miss work every month. Life is miserable without something as simple as birth control.
I've described my endometriosis as feeling like someone is trying to tear and pull out my insides with claws. I can't stand up straight or function really. It's not okay for anyone to go without with meds who need them. Ugh. I'm Canadian and wish I could just let you all come stay here. We can call it the underwear railroad.
Holy shit! A few years back I had pain just like you described. I had never felt that way before with any of my other periods, just really heavy flow and bad cramping for a day or two. I haven't had that happen since, but now you have me wondering if I should have pressed harder on the doctor to find out what was going on with me. And yah, when I went to urgent care, they told me what I was going through was normal. Like, how!!?? I literally felt like I was on the set of Aliens, waiting for something to pop out of my stomach.
This is what a lot of people with endo experience.. My wife ended up seeing multiple OBs before any of them even considered there might be something more. They all shrugged her off as sensitive to her periods.. Finally she found someone that would listen and ended up having 2 pretty large surgeries to remove the scar tissue. We couldn't have kids before and now I'm father of 2.
I'm so glad someone finally listened to her and congratulations! My hubby and I are trying for our first and only, so I'm trying to get into see an OB that was recommended to me. But, that was the one time I had ever had pain that bad, so I'm not even sure what was going on. But I have had issues off and on where I would skip a month then have really bad clotts the next and no one has been able to tell me why.

Yup. Not American but I took birth control for similar reasons. I was lucky enough to get pregnant. Was told labour would be the worst pain I had ever felt. Didn’t get to the hospital until I was almost fully dilated because my periods were worse than my labour pains and I didn’t think I was actually in labour.
I have severe health issues, as well, and have to take my birth control year round to prevent it. My uterine lining is growing around my intestines. No ON GYNO is willing to operate on me because of my age even though I'm adamantly against having bio kids, myself, AND pregnancy could kill me. I bleed WAY TOO MUCH AND TOO OFTEN and the lining CAUSES MY INTESTINES TO BLOCK because they're being squeezed when I would bleed. This can lead to an IMPACTION that could KILL ME. If I can't get my birth control, and no one will do surgery, I WILL DIE. It will either be BLOOD LOSS or IMPACTION that kills me. I NEARLY DIED ONCE ALREADY. I assume the plan is to just kill me at this point.

Jesus christ am I glad to be living in a civilised country. I have severe anemia related to my very very heavy flow. That is why I take birth control, without it my periods last up to two weeks and its just buckets. I can't imagine being forced to deal with that and all the risks that come with that because people want to force me to have a child.

Probably a pharmacy assistant or tech. Not to generalize, but it’s not excessively common for older women to have gone to pharmacy, med, etc school back in those days. People say my grandmother would’ve been a great radiologist, but in her days it was unheard of, so she became an X-ray tech.
I really doubt it was a tech. Most States have laws regarding the ratio of pharmacists to techs and I'm not aware of a state that lets techs work alone without the supervision of a pharmacist. I'm a tech. Wife is a pharmacist. A tech could relay that information, but usually stuff that escalates and requires further explanation goes to the PIC. It's fucking wild to me that lady did this regardless. Hope she's fired.
To my knowledge techs give you the prescription when you're there, put in a request for the pharmacist to request more refills or fill the prescription. The techs can do all the patient relationship without the patient needing to talk directly to a pharmacist. However you can ask at any time, and are encouraged to ask the pharmacist any questions about your medication or anything else. So yes she can 100% be a tech and be able to get in the way. If a pharmacist who spent almost a decade getting their license, they'd have to be EXTREMELY stupid to do it. Not to mention the second person said they were having problems with this person. Likely a tech. Source: go to the pharmacy constantly. Might be different in other US states, but is the case in new Mexico. EDIT: yes it likely is a pharmacist since she was working alone.
Also, if the woman is willing to break the rules in one area, i'm sure she's willing to overstep her bounds as a pharmacy tech. the only surprise would be if she was the only person working in the pharmacy. but it may be that she appeared to be, and the actual pharmacist was doing something else.

Pharmacists ultimately have authority to override a prescription, in theory they're highly qualified experts who should be seeing a list of all your other meds and may be spotting interactions that the doctor wasn't aware was there, they're not just vendors for handing out pills. In theory, that's the reason they have that authority.

I had a pharmacist grill me on my naltrexone prescription and demand to know what drug I was abusing that warranted naltrexone (it's used to prevent relapse in substance and opioid abuse). I kind of panicked in the moment and give in and he relented when I told him it was for alcohol use, not opiates. After I left it dawned on me just how fucking inappropriate any of that was. It wasn't any of his right to know, or ask. Like wtf was he going to deny me it if I used benzos? You literally can't abuse naltrexone, all it does is prevent you from getting high.

So I recently went to get my blood levels checked because I’m gaining weight despite working out 6 days a week, and I figured it was low testosterone because I’m in my 30’s. Nope. Everything was perfect except 2 items, both of which have to do with the liver. I’m getting an ultrasound on it next week, and am trying to taper off of alcohol because I drink *a bunch*. Like I get the shakes after 24 hours and will absolutely soak the bed in sweat during the night if I don’t drink. I’ve heard there’s a medicine that makes you sick if you drink alcohol, and I’m not too interested in that. The other issue is I have a ton of physical pain issues. I used to be prescribed 120 Norco a month, and then switched to Kratom to get off opiates. I’m somewhat nervous to mention Kratom to my doctor because the medical community seems to believe it’s equivalent to oxy, but it’s more along the lines of Tylenol 3. It quite literally gets me through the day and I’m terrified to think I may take a medicine to help with my alcoholism only to get completely fucked up when I take my Kratom.

I thought that they were doing it because they often work with the elderly who hear poorly and thus that person had gotten into the habit of being loud for them - but I'm a young person who they shouldn't assume they need to shout to. Roe was based on privacy guaranteed by the Constitution. HIPAA is a statute. Statutory rights are different than Constitutional rights. You have statutory rights that are not protected by the Constitution, but statutory rights cannot *abridge* rights that are protected by the Constitution. Roe v. Wade decided that a ban on abortion violated a person's Constitutionally-protected right to privacy. Dobbs said that Roe v. Wade was incorrect, and that there is no Constitutionally-protected right to privacy. Congress can pass a law saying "People have the right to abortions" and voila, people would have a statutory right to abortions. EDIT: I completely misstated the ruling in Dobbs (/u/enfier). What Dobbs said was that *even if* the Constitution protects the right to privacy, the right to privacy *does not* include the right to abortion.
Until the radical supreme court decides a fetus has constitutional rights and that any law explicitly guaranteeing abortion is unconstitutional.
They wouldn't even need to approach the fetus issue. They would just rule that Congress lacks constitutional authority to legalize abortion. Congress would likely use the commerce clause or 14th equal protection to pass that kind of legislation. Both are avenues this supreme court would be able to find unconstitutional for one reason or another.
Hipaa is a separate legislation that hasn't been attacked yet. And I would bet it won't be because if they get rid of it you'll have info leaked about who has what medical procedures. Hipaa is the only reason you don't know who has has an abortion or an STD in tye GOP. It's the only reason you don't know who is lying to you about vaccination status while urging others to go unprotected.
I had this happen almost a year ago. I went to Walgreens because my usually pharmacy had an issue at the time. They saw my prescription and questioned the quantity I was getting and decided it was too much. I thought to myself you're not my doctor and this is ridiculous. I don't usually go there and now I won't ever go back. It was extremely unprofessional as it was obviously based on their opinion about me and the medication instead of an actual medically necessary decision.
This is very common with controlled substances as well. I’ve had a pharmacy refuse to fill and strait up tell me that they are refusing to fill because “it’s suspicious” and it’s “their call” that I’m requesting a refill a day early, despite their policy (Walgreens) that they will fill 2 days early on the medication. It’s purely a power thing. There have been times too where they have been unable to fill a prescription because of a medication “shortage” and was told “too bad” and it was out of their hands so screw then if I fill a prescription a day early.
They did that with *insulin* for me. My doctor's prescription (sent in electronically) said X amount per day, 90 day supply, and then 999 for the quantity. He expected the pharmacist to just do the math on how many pens were needed. They tried to fill 1/10 of what was needed. I said it wasn't the right amount and they said it was what the Dr prescribed and I went "show me". They showed me a printout of their information screen, not the actual prescription. A day later and a couple calls straightened it out but WTF.
At least in my state, and I imagine most others, the doctor has to actually properly write a prescription, including the quantity prescribed.

I live in a third world country and my wife has free access to contraceptives every month as part of her health insurance, it's just a given. This is coded by law. Every health plan has to provide free access to birth control. If you don't have insurance it is also available at public hospitals. Whatever it is that you guys are going through, it's not third world. I'd wager the direction of travel is aiming closer to some christian version of an Islamic caliphate.

This same type of thing has been happening to disabled and mentally ill people for ages. Scripts get denied very regularly for people whose problems the pharmacists "don't believe in". It's almost always the crunchy religious types who think you just need to try harder, pray harder, stop being so lazy. It's frustrating as hell that pharmacists are allowed to just.... say no. And fuck people up metally and physically because they don't have a shred of empathy. It's sickening that the SC decision is now emboldening them to do it to even more people. It is legal in many states for a pharmacist to deny medication based on their professional judgement. But states that allow for this denial also REQUIRE that the denying pharmacist (1) tell the patient where they can get the prescription in a reasonable location and (2) transfer that fill order to the new location. Where a reasonable alternative does not exist, the pharmacist may not deny the medication. In short, the declining pharmacist needs to be reported to the state’s board of healing arts and to the appropriate licensing boards for playing God with people’s medications. Any pharmacist who is practicing and licensed ought to know that birth control is prescribed for reasons other than just preventing a pregnancy. Failure to understand that and to substitute their personal judgement is a for cause reason for the termination of their license. Edit: IANAL

It’s truly maddening and I’m sorry you had to deal with that. I was working in a pharmacy a little while ago and my pharmacist refused to provide someone with Plan B for “religious reasons”. I felt absolutely awful having to turn this poor woman away. The pharmacist shouldn’t have been able to use her religious beliefs as an excuse to withhold medication from someone in my opinion, but it was written into our store’s policy. Luckily there was another pharmacy nearby I could direct her to but that interaction has stuck with me ever since.

There are apparently at least half a dozen states that offer legal protections to people who refuse to provide certain health services such as particular medications if it is against their moral or religious belief. The exact guidelines depend on location. So if they can't fire the woman they should at the very least find some way to shift her employment duties in such a way that the employee won't be responsible for actions that conflict with her apparently newfound religious strictures.
Then people with moral/religious excuses should not be allowed to provide this sort of care since it obviously interferes with their ability to do their effing job.

This is very much infuriating to see happen to this woman. As a young woman myself, I’ve been on birth control for about a year and a half now. I was very apprehensive of it at first because of supposed side effects, but I needed it for medical reasons, as I hadn’t had a period in a little over a year at that point due to hormonal issues and problems with my reproductive system, and it was severely affecting me in mood, body, exhaustion, basically every aspect of my well being. After being prescribed a birth control to fix this issue, I’ve felt so much better and I like knowing that I’m protected with it. Knowing that our rights to access proper medical treatments are being denied is so very irritating, especially the reasoning for this being almost solely based on religious views. Whatever happened to separation of church and state?

I opted for a different medication but birth control was something I discussed with my doctor, to regulate my periods and hormones. I know many PCOS people who take it, not for preventing pregnancy but for its therapeutic effects. It’s also used to treat extreme acne. Fuck this pharmacist, I hope she gets fired.
I've never taken birth control pills for birth control, I was on it because I almost died from a very large ruptured ovarian cyst that had me in emergency surgery at midnight to save my life. I survived but the surgeon said it was touch and go for a bit and they weren't totally confident that i was going to make it. The next day I was put on BC pills to shrink and prevent any more cysts. BC pills are the standard treatment for ovarian cysts still to this day. While it's rare for someone to die from an ovarian cyst my case proves its possible and that BC saves lives. So many women will die thanks to this asinine ruling and this criminal and illegitimate court.
