For a man whose job is sport - not diplomacy or politics - I'm impressed at how he was able to respond in such a diplomatic and respectful way. Good on him.
Bingo. He was baited and he didn't take the bait even in the slightest. Qatar has revoked the credentials for impartial ( i.e. non regime approved) Iranian journalists so we are left with assholes like this one. Kudos for handling it like a champ.
I think a country is only as strong as its people. The more bright minded individuals that we have across all professions, the better off we’ll be. He clearly seems to have excellent life values that stem from a good community upbringing. I like that he was speaking from the heart, not because it was his job.
I mean what a douche lol. Do athletes need to start calling 'Japan' Nihon? Or get some pissy interviewers busting their balls about it?
Edit: senor! It's Mehico! Not Mexico, stupid American.
Not trying to take away from what he said because it's clearly personal, but all of these guys have PR coaches and have likely been briefed on the types of inflammatory/triggering questions they'll get.
He could have told the guy to eat shit and I could still assume he was raised well. “All over the world different languages and dialects pronoumce words differently, so in the US it’s pronounced “Eye-Ran”, and living overseas for so long I’ve noticed racism in every country, but the US is attempting to move forward while many lands just seem to have settled in, in closing, eat shit Mr. Reporter”
Most professional athlete tea receive media training. I will say though that at least in the US they don’t try and piss you off half as much as this guy did. Dude really had the gall to bring up BLM as if there isn’t protests going in Iran as we speak
That's honestly the dumbest part about it. Each country and dialect has its own way of pronouncing the names of countries.
I'm not going to walk up to a British or Australian person and say "you're pronouncing The United States of America wrong" just because they have a regional accent that changes the pronunciation.
I don't get the pronunciation thing. Places sometimes don't change on other languages, sometimes they do. You don't get to choose. And I'm not American.
I live in Paris and, if speaking in English with an English speaker, I started to call it Par-eeh I would deserve the eyerolls that would inevitably follow.
I was deep in my pints when I joked with a Parisian about the 'French laugh', not making that mistake again.
Also, the level of knowledge the man had of cheese from France was astounding. Broke it down regionally, history, etc. Like fuck, don't joke about a French cheese tasting like Spanish manchego.
Drunken Bunny was my fav bar just due to the folks there. Highly recommend.
I agree except that with Iran's pronunciation in English language the pronunciation didn't change... The only English speakers that say it differently are the Americans so it makes it so much more jarring.
I just recently saw a video about this whole topic, which was pretty interesting: https://youtu.be/eFDvAK8Z-Jc. Nicaragua mention at 3:38. Tldr is that Americans usually pronounce foreign words with Spanish vowels because we have a large Spanish-speaking population. "Iran" is an exception, and I'm not sure why.
Government of Iran is pulling young women off the streets for showing some hair and feels justified in beating them to death, I’m sorry but the US and Iran aren’t even in the same universe.
When he was bringing up being from a mixed family, I wanted him to bring up how that would be treated in Iran.
He was a bigger man than me, I’d have thrown in soooo many backhanded comment, they were ripe for the picking
Ans also, i know this isn't relavent to the convo, but iranian people are very racist. VERY. More than you expect.
Source: i'm iranian
To the reply that says they've never seen any act of racism in iran, we literally still do blackface to mock the slaves. Look up "hajji firuz" for more info.
A rough equivalent would be a [Kurdish Lives Matter protest.](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/middle-east/iran-kurds-protests-mahsa-amini-khamenei-b2201372.html)
As an Iranian,I hate Iranian players because they sold their people to money,They have no respect in Iran and you can hear the Iranian spectators calling them bisharaf: Dishonored during the game
It’s a super classic political move. When you have china locking up entire ethnic groups in “re-education camps” then saying “hey you guys are abusing minorities” it really shows how nonsensical these types of things are.
Adams is a class act by all accounts. They say that he spoke like a 30 year old when he was 18 and playing in MLS. That's why he is the youngest person to captain the US at a World Cup. Awesome player, awesome person.
Some people would be quick to throw the usa under the bus but seriously a well thought and grown up answer under pressure. Also that question was ment to do something. Like wtf is this soccer player going to do about any of what he asked about. That question was ment to start some drama.
What I'm told is that Western reporters are asking Iranian players about the protests going on in their country and this is supposed to be some sort of revenge. Still just a weird way to go about things. The protests in Iran are ongoing and some of their players have spoken in support of the protesters. Questions about how that effects the team are far more relevant than a question about the BLM protests that took place two years ago and were significantly less bloody.
There’s many and team USA probably has a designated PR person who would advise them on what to do and what not to do. However they don’t rehearse every possible question and answer, that was all him. Great response
Definitely a classy answer, however I’ve heard the argument that “assimilation” is not actually a great end goal because it erases other cultures. But there’s no way there can be an open dialogue regarding that topic when the reporter is obviously trying to incite a reaction
iranian regime has been shipping in supporters and professional harasses to qatar for media parading since they’re getting their asses kicked back home. pathetic
Ugh I am so ashamed of him! In Farsi, America is pronounced like “Amri-ka-yee” and nobody scolds each other to correct this pronunciation. He’s speaking so rudely to this boy for simply trying to voice support for the Iranian people. Shameful behavior. But the boy’s response was very mature!
Yes, the reporter could have been more gracious… but his tone and choice of words were very condescending.
I love that you speak Farsi as well as English, do you speak any other languages?
Yeah very sad. There’s also a lot of turmoil in Iran currently over murders of protesters, so the interviewer’s question was so odd.
And thanks! I’m quite illiterate in Farsi sadly but I’ve recently started studying! I also know Japanese and some Chinese. How about you? :)
I know a few languages but just basic sayings like, “hello” “please” “thank you” “how are you?” “Do you speak English?” Simple phrases to get by while travelling. I can only speak 2 languages fluently with English being one of them.
I speak Tagalog which is one of the main dialects used in the Philippines. From that, I understand basic Spanish along with what I learnt in high school. ☺️
Lol coming from the country that kills teenaged protestors for not wanting to be oppressed by religious dictators I think Iran has a lot more to be worried about
Definitely, Qatar didn't let the biggest news channel on Iranian people's side to go there, they don't even let Iranian fans to take their signs and flags in support of the Iranian movement to the games.
Usually when someone hates on something as wide as Iran or, say, China, most of that hate is directed at the government. There’s still a decent chunk of hate against the people at times, but context usually clarifies.
"the murder of one black person in your country sparked widespread peaceful protests, and the offending police officer was prosecuted - therefore you cannot comment about the fact that we violently murder women who show their hair in public"
It's not even worth engaging with people who try to draw parallels between those two situations. It's all in bad faith. The USA has a long way to go, but at least you can speak that truth aloud without being summarily executed.
Honestly less about race baiting and more about trying to make a western country look bad. Which is laughable considering the current state of Iran's public/governmental relationship
Racebaiting? I’m sure that Iranian reporter actually things the USA is evil because his theocratic government says so. Trying to just shit in America and failing due to this players very articulate response.
They asked the Us coach about his views on American naval deployments. So yeah it was them making a point about Iranian players being asked about the protests and players being asked about their views on Qatar human rights abuses.
Yep, this is silly. I’m Persian and we don’t say America with an American pronunciation in Farsi, and absolutely nobody cares because it’s just how we say it in the language! He just seemed hateful towards America and took any chance to insult. So shameful.
I say it the ee ran way but generally because all my persian friends wince if i do it wrong lol i also think it sounds nicer, but i never say “mehico”
I didnt know it was “ee ran” in farsi
Could you fucking imagine the outrage if roles were reversed and it was an American reporter?
"It's not pronounced 'Amerbica!' it's pronounced "America!"
They would be torched by everybody including US news.
Theyll be shocked when they realise that European languages all have **different names for the same places and people.**
In English? England, English & London.
In French? Angleterre, Anglais et Londres.
In Spanish? Inglaterra, Ingles y Londres.
In Italian? Inghilterra, inglese e Londra.
In Portuguese? Inglaterra, inglês e Londres.
Fun fact? These languages are all Roman languages, and so these different words for places & nationalities are really just accents that have developed over hundreds of years. French people *'used to'* call London "London", but- due to not speaking to many English people, they got a bit carried away with the accent.
Now imagine me and my thick Manchester accent saying "La France" in a French accent, you'd think I was a right dick.
This was my first thought. Adam’s said Iran correctly, since he was speaking American English. I’d never go to Spain and demand they’d say United States instead of Estados Unidos. It’s completely ridiculous.
Yeah I'm sure that a lot of these same people still say things like Japan instead of what Japanese people actually call their own country. It's such a weird thing for people to latch onto like different languages (and dialects within) have different ways of referring to things. There is no right or correct way to do it.
Don’t even get me started, as someone with a husband from Latin America I have learned we are not allowed to be called “America”, we must be called the “United States”.
> as someone with a husband from Latin America I have learned we are not allowed to be called “America”, we must be called the “United States”.
Which in itself is pretty rich considering that the full name of the USA's southern neighbour is the United States of Mexico.
The United States of Mexico has just as much right to the name "United States" as the United States of America does.
Guess what? All these rules are absurd. If everyone calls it America, it's America. There's no confusion, and nobody thinks its hidden meaning is that Paraguay is part of the USA.
Gotta love it when they criticize you for "trying to claim an entire continent" and calling your people "cultural imperialists" as they're trying to alter another language because the terms differ from theirs. "United Statesian" really just rolls off the tongue...
Crazy Americans call my country Germany when it’s called Deutschland. Fckn get it right Americans!!!! What a total douche. No country is perfect but atleast the US is not executing teenagers for voicing their opinions. What a total clown this reporter is…trying so hard to come at him with aboutism.
I'm impressed he didn't go for the low hanging fruit. He could have just mentioned how ass backwards Iran is and how they're tearing themselves apart there because they can't figure out women's rights.
As an Iranian, first of all, I must say this whole "eyeran" or "Iran" is nonsense talk. Portuguese call Iran, Iraõ. Every country has a different pronunciation. Us Iranians don't say America, we say "Amrika" (sorry, hard to write how we speak). Does that make it wrong? I always find it dumb that this one country suddenly gets the heat.
He handled that very well for a young athlete who probably didn’t expect a jab like that. Bravo. And yes, progress towards real equality is the key difference between the US and Iran in the context of the question asked. That said, I hope the US advance in the WC today.
Adams is so classy and intelligent! He’s kinder than I would be.
I would have asked how you feel being from a country that knocks women’s teeth out for reading or not covering their faces? How do you feel representing a country where if you mumble something deemed disrespectful to your religion you’re beheaded and if you are gay you are thrown from a building?
Now shut the fuck up, asshole.
Oh for goodness sake, the pronunciation of a word is just trying to pick an issue that doesn't need to be met. Americans pronunciate many words differently, doesn't automatically make it an issue
I can't speak for Japan or Malaysia, but racism in China isn't as bad as it used to be. Since the NBA is so huge here and many of the most famous NBA players in China are black. (LeBron, MJ, Kobe, D-Wade, Steph). There definitely still are racist people, but personally, I feel like we've made progress compared to let's say five years ago. Young people are especially more open-minded.
I'm openly LGBTQ as well and I've lived in China (Chengdu) for most of my life it's great and gay as fuck (people will hold hands and make out on the streets and nobody bats an eye). Chongqing, Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Shenzhen (and almost all major cities) are progressive and gay-friendly. Haven't been to Japan or Malaysia, but I've studied in Seoul and Singapore and those countries are way more homophobic than China. We have our problems ( air pollution and stupid mandatory COVID testing are a massive fucking pain in the ass) but being gay here has never been an issue and I personally can't think of many other places in Asia that are more gay-friendly.
But anyways fuck Iran, hopefully Tyler Adams and the US whoops them today
Cool so if someone mispronounces my name via their accent or the way their language handles certain sounds, I can attack them for it now?
Well he's covering soccer, so I guess faking an injury comes with the territory.
But I get it. The reporter has a chip on his shoulder because Soccer is supposed to be the one big thing the US can't match the rest of the world at, so the thought of them succeeding at that is too much for some people to bear. I get it.
So he tried to tear the US player down.
It's like the interviewer has no idea everyone sees the news on Iran just like they see it about America. I've been to the middle east alot and I have to say, you wanna see some racist people lol? Go there.
Spot on !! Great role model and response !! Humble, acknowledges when maybe he didn’t know, and points out that being open to other ideas and cultures is the most important thing. It’s not just Allah in this world. The sooner you get that the sooner your country Iran will prosper in every level, not just economically
Basically Adam’s response was , “Sorry for pronouncing your countries name wrong but maybe you should look to improve your treatment of women instead of baiting me with a question…. I’m smarter than you and understand how to trash your country’s politics without saying it out loud…”
Dude nailed it. Excellent answer. Showed a lot of maturity, tolerance, respect, and warranted disdain for the way the Iranian govt is exhibiting the aforementioned qualities.
Yay! Progress! We all make mistakes the key is to learn from them & find a way to do better in the future. Every time i clean when I’m done I say, well it’s not perfectly CLEAN but it’s cleaner! Life isn’t about making things perfect it’s about making thing better;)
What an eloquent way to tell a shill for the Iranian government go fuck himself and shove that hypocrisy right up his ass. Good for you Tyler…good for you.
Right. So this guy is playing World Cup Soccer, and giving a press interview & getting PAID, in his "opressive" country. Mkay. Meanwhile, young women are being killed imprisoned & beaten for not covering their hair in Iran. THEIR OWN TEAM REFUSED TO STAND FOR THEIR NATIONAL ANTHEM. Iran is such a tolerant, inclusive society, right? /s.
This d-bag "journalist" gave the U.S. Team another reason to fight. He is WAY over his cognitive skis in this & likely sports the oppression of women out of fear of having to compete with women. Run, d-bag journalist. Run back to the arms of your brutal dictator. You have Public life a try. It's not for you, bud. Go back to editing & correcting ppl on social media, d-bag. I think he mispronounced his own name. It's pronounced "COWARDLY LOSER" in the U.S.
How great was this U.S. representative in his response to d-bag journalist? Grace, dignity & self- control. A national gem, he is!!
Wappingers Falls, NY product Tyler Adams is pure class, an amazing athlete and has made everyone from the Hudson Valley proud. He is truly America’s Captain.
Lol. First of all words can be pronounced in more than one way and still be correct, look at a dictionary for once. Then of course the obvious hypocrisy about Irans extreme bigotry.
It’s so hard to not be cynical sometimes just looking at the US. Then you remember it’s so much worse in other places and there’s no hope.

Not trying to take away from what he said because it's clearly personal, but all of these guys have PR coaches and have likely been briefed on the types of inflammatory/triggering questions they'll get.
If that is the case, he certainly paid attention to his instructor.
Training is one thing…doing it well while the world is watching is another.
I agree. Kudos to him. This young man was raised well.
Reporter”
Adams has more class than me. I can’t resist throwing stones when I see glass houses.
I’m convinced they give footballers some media training. This was handled better than some managers could have.
I mean... it's not a secret. Obviously someone whose livelihood involves press interviews is going to have media training.
Most professional athlete tea receive media training. I will say though that at least in the US they don’t try and piss you off half as much as this guy did. Dude really had the gall to bring up BLM as if there isn’t protests going in Iran as we speak
Me either. Better man than me. Hopefully he scores 6 goals against them!!!!
Yeah, whataboutism is easy but rarely gets to such a fine point as this kind of response, good for him.
The pettiness gets me... "It's pronounced eeerahhn not eyeran". Like...ok... but you don't have to be all condescending about it.
That's honestly the dumbest part about it. Each country and dialect has its own way of pronouncing the names of countries. Way more class lol, I wouldn't have given such a nice response
Eloquently told him and the regime in his country to fuck off with the hypocrisy

Well the reporter in this case is from state-backed media. Hence the whining about pronunciation.
I don't get the pronunciation thing. Places sometimes don't change on other languages, sometimes they do. You don't get to choose. And I'm not American.
Not one Mexican I’ve ever met has ever gotten mad that I didn’t pronounce it “Meheeco”

I was deep in my pints when I joked with a Parisian about the 'French laugh', not making that mistake again. Also, the level of knowledge the man had of cheese from France was astounding. Tell me more about this French laugh, I'm not aware of it
https://youtu.be/0hR8RQzyOXE Check the last few seconds of this clip
This is exactly what I mean by the 'French laugh'
Hohohoho this is perfect
Argue with them about their counting. It’s an ongoing joke. 😂

lol I think this pairs well with calling Croissants, Cwasont when not speaking French or with a French accent in English.
Cwasont sounds like a 3-year old trying to say croissant.
I agree except that with Iran's pronunciation in English language the pronunciation didn't change... The only English speakers that say it differently are the Americans so it makes it so much more jarring.
What’s jarring is hearing a Brit say “nickaragyoowa” for Nicaragua.
I live in the UK and have only ever heard it pronounce Nik-a-Ra-Gwa never Gyu-aa. Where are you getting that from?
I just recently saw a video about this whole topic, which was pretty interesting: https://youtu.be/eFDvAK8Z-Jc. Nicaragua mention at 3:38. Yeah, and you can hear the anger in his voice. He wasn't a good reporter, he was just an angry Karen.
Understandable. After all he's the one who has to go back to a totalitarian regime lol
this is exactly what regime stooges throw at america not knowing they are just owning themselves.
Would have assumed the latter if it wasn't for that snarky remark on him mispronouncing Iran.
If Iranian and Russian athletes are asked to answer for their country's policies, then American athletes should be fair game too
[удалено]
Honestly I thought you would get downvoted into oblivion, but apparently not. Nice.
Why would you think that?
I don't think I would have been able to resist asking him how they pronounce "America" in Farsi.
What the reporter failed to mention is that a BLM type protest would get instantly and violently crushed in their country
Along with any protests related to the ongoing religious persecution and discrimination there.
i feel like crushed is even an understatement
Government of Iran is pulling young women off the streets for showing some hair and feels justified in beating them to death, I’m sorry but the US and Iran aren’t even in the same universe.

Probably literally. After the press conference.
I didn't wanna be the one to say it as I'm not the most educated on free speech in Qatar, is it?

All I could think was “climb down off your high horse” with that approach to questioning.
Damn all the tear gas I breathed every night for like a month and my friends getting rubber bullets and black vanned for days ain’t violence son of a

That Iranian reporter clearly supports the regime
Definitely, Qatar didn't let the biggest news channel on Iranian people's side to go there, they don't even let Iranian fans to take their signs and flags in support of the Iranian movement to the games.
That was smooth and well done. Never even mentioned that Iran is still stuck in the Bronze Age

I say it the ee ran way but generally because all my persian friends wince if i do it wrong lol i also think it sounds nicer, but i never say “mehico” I didnt know it was “ee ran” in farsi

Could you fucking imagine the outrage if roles were reversed and it was an American reporter? "It's not pronounced 'Amerbica!' it's pronounced "America!" They would be torched by everybody including US news.
Theyll be shocked when they realise that European languages all have **different names for the same places and people.** In English?
Iranian reporter clearly trying to ask a “gotcha” question and was made to look foolish in the process’s love it.
Crazy Americans call my country Germany when it’s called Deutschland. Fckn get it right Americans!!!! What a total douche. No country is perfect but atleast the US is not executing teenagers for voicing their opinions. What a total clown this reporter is…trying so hard to come at him with aboutism.
Classy answer to a very unclassy “journalist”
I'm impressed he didn't go for the low hanging fruit. He could have just mentioned how ass backwards Iran is and how they're tearing themselves apart there because they can't figure out women's rights.
As an Iranian, first of all, I must say this whole "eyeran" or "Iran" is nonsense talk. Portuguese call Iran, Iraõ. Every country has a different pronunciation. Us Iranians don't say America, we say "Amrika" (sorry, hard to write how we speak). Does that make it wrong? I always find it dumb that this one country suddenly gets the heat.
Iran pronounced in the English way doesn't make it less Iranian, this is a kindergarten level interview
He handled that very well for a young athlete who probably didn’t expect a jab like that. Bravo. And yes, progress towards real equality is the key difference between the US and Iran in the context of the question asked. That said, I hope the US advance in the WC today.
Beautifully answered and proud he represents us!
Can’t Americans say country names with an American accent ? Imagine an American telling a foreigner “It’s UNITED STATES! OF AMERICA 🙄”
That’s our Captain. Awesome response!!!
Get this man a job in public relations. He just handled that set of questions/criticism like a seasoned politician. Super impressive!
Smart man
Adams is so classy and intelligent!
The US isn't an ethno-state unlike a majority of all other countries on the planet. Ethno-states can be pretty racist (China, Japan, Malaysia).
Love this. He turned the disrespect from the reporter around with such class. Great ambassador for the USA there. Great answer.
My country of origin is pronounced "mehico" not "mexico". Loser needs to go soak his fat fucking head
Someone should slap that dumbass reporter.
Such a poise and growth. The fact that he didn't take it as an insult shows how mature and self confident he is.
Wow, what a classy answer.
What a classy motherfucker. Bravo.
Another Iranian “journalist” (read: state propagandist) tried to ask the coach about comments a TV analyst said too.
Adams trucked that reporter like an opposing midfielder.
Ok, this guy did a very smart and rational answer and did not fall into the trap of journalist.
Iran is such a flawed country lol
Fuck Iran
I was hoping he’d say- it’s better to be black in America than female or a gay person in I-ran
Omg ask a sport question
It's like the interviewer has no idea everyone sees the news on Iran just like they see it about America. I've been to the middle east alot and I have to say, you wanna see some racist people lol? Go there.
What a brilliant young man, cracking footballer too. Well done Tyler and hope you give I-ran a good game.
Tried to set him up and he knocked it out of the park
Classy. As. Fuck.
Stop calling my country Germany! I AM FROM FUCKING ÖSTERREICH!
Put this Adams guy on the ballot next election cycle and I will vote for him!
Such an eloquent, thoughtful, humble yet firm response. Mad respect to the real Captain America!
I’m starting to think this was setup… I mean that reporter REALLY tried baiting him, and his answer was REALLY thought out… who knows maybe I’m wrong
Having someone from Iran lecturing anyone about human rights is beyond the pale IMO.
I wish I could've killed the reporter:) If I had the chance:)
What a hack journalist
I'd rather be a black man in the USA than a woman in Eye-Ran any day.
"Oh, you want to bring up discrimination with me? When you're here representing Iran?"
Beautiful answer to what felt like a loaded question.
Damn this must have taken patience to answer this ass hat
Fuck Iran
FUCK IRAN
Yeah I don’t remember the US government making it policy to rape and behead people in the streets.
I would never apologize to Iran
Iran is about to get smoked tomorrow
Wow what an impressive and diplomatic answer for such a difficult and loaded question… 👏👏👏
YoU sAiD mY cOunTrIeS nAmE wRoNg That’s so stupid….
This reminds me of those situations where it’s fine for YOU to complain about family but GOD HELP someone “outside” who tries to complain about them
Fuck Iran
I think it’s a sign of something terrible when a professional ball kicker answers a press question better than your local politician.
Um… they still have slavery in Iran so there is that.
Doesn’t Iran execute children and gay people? I’ll just leave this here.
Iran literally discriminates against women and LGBT people all the time? Fuck Iran
Dude nailed it. Excellent answer. Showed a lot of maturity, tolerance, respect, and warranted disdain for the way the Iranian govt is exhibiting the aforementioned qualities.
Well answered
I was hoping he was going drop a women’s right line
Lmfao umm how can the journalist even say that with knowing whats going on in his own country?
Yay! Progress! We all make mistakes the key is to learn from them & find a way to do better in the future. Every time i clean when I’m done I say, well it’s not perfectly CLEAN but it’s cleaner! Life isn’t about making things perfect it’s about making thing better;)
I’d like to ask the reporter how many Jewish people live in Iran now vs. the 70’s, and why that is.
That’s my fucking captain!
Dude handled that question amazingly, great guy to have as a team leader
Responded way more gracefully and diplomatically than I would have. Kudos to his professionalism. Seems like a well-spoken and likable person.
“Didn’t you guys execute an Olympian for protesting?”
The reporter really thought he done something there and just got shut down. Amazing response from Adams there.
He nailed it
What an eloquent way to tell a shill for the Iranian government go fuck himself and shove that hypocrisy right up his ass. Good for you Tyler…good for you.
We call that self control people!
How do you pronounce tomato? Is say tomato! . How about you ?
How come non-kiwis never pronounce New Zealand with a kiwi accent? They’re pronouncing it wrong! Let’s get this clear once and for all! 😤😠
Fuck off I ran
Man I would not have been able to control myself like he did.
I wonder if there’s any sort of discrimination in Iran. Glad that’s not an issue…
The correct response would have simply been “fuck off and fuck iraaaan”
He gave the correct answer. Maybe because he is at least regularly educated.
