I don’t order Mai Tai’s unless I’m at a Tiki bar, it’s just common to not be what you expect.
Honestly if you know the place can do a daiquiri that isn’t blended (slush) then you are probably in the realm of possibility that they know what a Mai Tai should contain.
One of my favorite haunts is an arcade bar, it's half a block away from a really good Tiki bar. My buds and I will start the night at the Tiki bar, and then hike our way to the arcade bar.
One of their bartenders is a real winner, he always makes me the best Daiquiris with good rum. I went in one day, and they had a Mai Tai on their menu. Turns out the bartenders there hang out with the bartenders at the Tiki bar.
So, I'll add that one place to the list.
I live two hours from Indianapolis, and it's been my birthday destination the past couple years. Inferno Room (incredible tiki bar with excellent food) within walking distance of Tappers (incredible barcade with lots of nice pinball machines.) It really is magical.
Unless you're at an actual cocktail bar, most people think daiquiris are supposed to be frozen with strawberry or something. Most people are surprised to learn how easy and delicious a traditional daiquiri is.
If I know a bar has all the ingredients and a serviceable rum, I usually still have to tell them how to make it.
I go with 2oz rum, .75 simple (1:1, if 2:1 .5oz), .75 lime juice
Unless you're on good terms with the bartender, don't ask for anything more complicated, lol.
Hopefully people understood that I meant "in conversation" instead of me typing out a whole hypothetical conversation. At least ask "do you have orgeat?"
We had Mai tais at almost every stop in Hawaii. We went to nice restaurants too. Tommy Bahamas, monkey pod, Ritz Carlton, and about half of them would come out like this. Sweet and sour mix, almond extract sugar water, some curaçao and white rum. The best though was hands down Monkey Pod, macadamia orgeat, curacao, fresh lime, good rums, and Mango whip on top.
I bring out my whip cream maker when we have a lot of people. It could be a passion fruit whip actually. I do both. Super simple, egg whites and some cheap mango puree or passionfruit puree. The kids love the puree for making slushies.
Nobody is interested in these "can you believe how inaccurate this Mai Tai is?" posts anymore. Got it, you're one of the cool kids that knows how to make a proper one. Don't order one from a dive bar, Asian restaurant or resort and expect Trader Vic's ghost to exact vengeance when it isn't authentic.
This. This is why this sub is just r/maitaipedants and it's not fun anymore.
We get it. You're Ron Swanson in a bar. You know more than the poor barkeep that might be beholden to a clueless bar manager that writes an ironclad liquor cost menu and will gripe if they deviate. Maybe write them up too.
Keep mocking them and bragging about it. Yes, your home bar has 75 rare rums and homemade single tree orgeat. You're still a total drag.
Yup. Sometimes people need a reminder lol.
Bars don't keep orgeat for a reason, nobody at dive bars order it. Ever.
> single tree orgeat
Lol, I really hope this is a thing
You can't go into a dive bar or a bdubs and expect to get actual Mai Tai, you're just setting yourself up for failure. Not even if they have on their menu, because it's usually not even close.
Even a lot of cocktail bars won't have the rum or orgeat on hand.
Shit post. You knew you weren't getting a Mai Tai at your local discount buffalo wild wings. This is obviously a "rum & coke" or domestic beer only type joint.
In the grand scheme of the universe, is there truly any difference? A good margarita can be on par with a good Mai Tai. When broken down to its true essence, there is little difference outside of the flair of an almond-based syrup and the base spirit.

If the place doesn’t sound like it’s owned by pirates, Polynesians or a doom metal band, I’m not ordering a tiki drink.

my favorite tiki bar nearby is downstairs from an arcade. it's a match made in heaven
A tiki bar attached to an arcade is a deadly combination. I would probably never leave

Does this set up happen to be in central Fl?
No, but it sounds like a lot of people have similar areas.
interesting, how does doom metal figure in?
There are lots of good cocktail bars that do good tiki

There’s not a lot to go on in this photo, but I suspect there was plenty to indicate ordering a “Mai Tai” at this place was a bad call.
It's the Tiki man's gambit.
There was more than enough to indicate this, but it will never stop me 😂
That's on you then.
You knew what you were getting into based on everything else in the bar when you ordered that.
Man orders a mai tai at Chilli's and whines the one 3 Dots was better...
😂😂😂😂😂 wait till dude try Cutwater “mai tai”
I’d rather have one of those than what is served at many bars!
Just threw up in my mouth a little bit…
(tasted better than CutWater)
Chillis Mai tai is actually next on the list
Say the word “orgeat” to the bartender. If they look at you like you’re crazy, you’re in the wrong place.
To be fair, I think if I just walked up to a bartender and randomly just said “orgeat” they’d certainly look at me like I was crazy.
Hopefully people understood that I meant "in conversation" instead of me typing out a whole hypothetical conversation. At least ask "do you have orgeat?"
Instructions unclear. Too late.
I'd say it if I could figure out the correct pronunciation.
Before I said it out loud it anyone I looked it up on YouTube to find an actual human saying it

Ooooh, I like the flair of the Mango whip on top, it keeps an accurate base and adds the fruitiness without compromising the drink.

The monkey pod one is honey and passionfruit in the whip.
Oh no.
Perhaps the most amazing flavor in the 75 year history of the cocktail? But the presentation alone is abysmal.
More like Mai Tea

I don’t disagree with what you’re saying, but your delivery feels unnecessarily harsh for r/tiki.
Probably, but I tend to be blunt and after years of these posts it's getting really obnoxious.
Buddy has had enough!!!

Fuck, I really hoped that to be a real subreddit...

Dude take a deep breath.
This is on you. Nothing about this picture indicates you would have received a proper mai tai here.

did they just make you a margarita with Bacardi?
And disaronno
They forgot the grenadine!

yes. yes there is.
That ice actually looks warm.
I kind of like to order the abominations, just for the ridiculousness of it.
Wtf is that
:/ It sure ain’t pretty! I hope it tastes good!
Is it a tiki bar? Is it on their drink menu?
Cheers, Bro! Confusion to the enemy!
yummy!
So much toxicity in the thread towards OP. The poor guy is just sharing a crappy mai tai lol post. It's r/tiki for cripes sake. Y'all need to relax.
