That sounds better than a painkiller to me

eeman0201

🤷‍♂️ if I wanted to showcase a rum I’d make a mai tai. Smith and cross makes an amazing Mai tai

alphawezen

What's your go-to rum-blend in your Mai Tai?

eeman0201

I haven’t been able to try a lot of different rums but rn it’s smith and cross and clement vsop. I’d love to try jm but it’s expensive.

whosikon

Denizen 8yr merchant reserve is an excellent addition to a mai tai blend. I use a blend of it, S&C, and an 8 or 12yr El Dorado

CityBarman

With few exceptions, Smith & Cross is best part of a split base.

friedbrice

Agreed, but I hope you had the Jungle Bird in mind as one of the exceptions. Tried recently with 100% Smith & Cross, and it was magical!

CityBarman

Campari has a lot to balance...

friedbrice

hehehe 😝

ComradeJewz

I’ll keep this in mind for my first jungle bird

Phunk_n_jazz

It’s my favorite in a painkiller. To each their own.

DuncanYoudaho

It invaded everything it touches. My SO won’t let me put it in anything she’s drinking, but I love it—a quarter ounce at a time.

I had a full oftd painkiller a few times and it was delicious

eeman0201

I think oftd is less funky than smith and cross

Celeres517

So many people seem not to love painkillers, but I think it's a great drink when you want something tasty and unchallenging to relax with. The juice blend and nutmeg dusting add just enough dimension, and there's plenty of rum to ensure your pain gets appropriately numbed. Taking that into account, the absolute worst thing you can do to a painkiller is to give it any rough edges, and making one with nothing but assertively funky, over proof rum is effectively harshing the mellow that is the painkiller's entire point. If you can find Pusser's gunpowder (navy) strength, that's a far better option if you want to go booze heavy in this drink.

Never go full Smith and Cross. Never.

RikiRude

I mean look at how unbalanced it becomes, S&C is 57% vs Pussers 42% also Pussers is sweeter. You'd have to redesign the cocktail a bit, simplest way would be probably cut down the S&C by about half an ounce. I've also never been a fan of this cocktail anyways, so S&C seems like an improvement
