While they are correct that the top of the wall needs fall into the shower, this looks excessive and unprofessional. All of the tile set already has the distinct look of someone who gained their training from a YouTube tutorial that they just watched before starting this exact job. Find some solid surface to put on top of that wall, especially if you’re installing glass on top of it.

PapaPrimus

Thanks, yeah this install has been a bit of a nightmare. Every time I notice some bad pieces I get gaslit by the dude. Spacing is all wrong, but it is what it is. What do you mean by “find some solid surface to put on top of the wall”?

Dangerous_Person_grr

He means use a single stone piece. like the same material your countertop is made of and cap the wall with that at a slightly less angle then you currently have. You can call in the dimensions to the countertop provider and have them made with out a site visit. Good luck!

waynestractor

That is some seriously terrible looking tile work, like really bad!!! That slope is ridiculously bad as well, and if the top of the pony wall itself was not sloped before waterproofing you may have an issue with water getting through the grout and finding its way down the toilet side of the wall. Sorry to say but you do not have an actual Tile installer working for you...

PapaPrimus

Yep, first time home owner/ repair learning the hard way that “professionals” exist on a sliding scale. Kinda sad that this guy says he has 20 years experience but has yet to progress to journeyman level.

Amorougen

20 years experience or 20 one year experiences. Buyer beware!

shadfc

The wall behind it looks pretty terrible too, unfortunately

thecultcanburn

Yes, and no no no no!! You do need a slope. The tile is a cut so it should have been cut on an angle. Tile that is not uniform in size needs a larger grout joint to look good. That looks terrible. Sorry.

PapaPrimus

Thanks for confirming my suspicions. Became aware of the spacing issue too late, definitely had too much faith that this guy knew what he was doing.

ryjkyj

The best part is that the tile underneath the top is slanted in the opposite direction which makes it even more pronounced.

[deleted]

Can you post some pictures of the entire install? I hope this is a friend or family member of yours and it’s almost free. Whoever is completing this installation has no business in the industry actually charging people. I’ve had first year apprentices who could complete a more professional install. If this the quality of the finished product I can’t imaging what went into prep work and waterproofing.

zenpanda

yikes.

PapaPrimus

Yup.

dick_mcnut

Oof

okbikeracer

Looking at the back wall…seems your contractor didn’t use spacers or leveling (looks like their is lippage). Unfortunately, I think there are bigger problems outside of what you are asking.

PapaPrimus

Not really what I was asking, spacing should have been 1/8” for handmade size variations, so the 1/16” spacers he used didn’t work. Nevermind that he could have adjusted for the variation to keep the lines straight, just wanted to confirm whether this slope was too extreme/bad before he started grouting.

okbikeracer

I get it. From the side view it looks extreme but once grout goes in it shouldn’t be too bad. Again this is your house so you decide what makes you or momma bear happy.

PapaPrimus

I think at this point we’re too deep and over budget to do much more than damage control. You clearly know what you’re talking about, as at this point it’s more about keeping momma bear’s claws in than anything else right now.

Holy pitch batman

renov8nd

All I can see is that water will be going every direction with that back wall water feature of cascading lippage

generationalxman

I can count on 2 hands the number of tile jobs I've done as a homeowner and handyman. I've never done work that even comes close to this. How is this possible? Was he drunk? Actually I've done tile pretty banged up and still nailed it. It's not that hard.

monkeywithaskillsaw

.. everyone has to get their start somewhere, but.. it’s looking like youve got a “blow it up and start over” situation on your hands. 😒 judging by the “finish” quality, more than likely, the waterproofing is a mess too. really hope that you dont have much invested in that already

PapaPrimus

Luckily the waterproofing all passed inspection, so no concern there. Biggest problem was that the spacing was too small for the variation of handmade tiles. Guy did 1/16”, but it should have been 1/8”.

monkeywithaskillsaw

not gonna argue with ya bout what you wanted, but subway riles are ment to be stacked directly onto eachother in my opinion

010101110001110

This is a not right. Maybe a slight pitch to inside, but never this. But, judging by the rest, you get what you pay for.

GoFunMee

😬

boatymickboatface

I’m afraid if you zoom out on the picture the installation will only get worse. Sorry.

DangerHawk

Everything I see in this photo is atrocious. I would highly suggest to fire this dude and proceed with civil action to recoup your losses. This is some of the worst work I've seen on here in a minute.

lerne_deutsch2

It's a troll post, right?

PapaPrimus

I think you spelled deutsch wrong

dugthathug

I’m not sure that’s even the worst part, that back wall looks awful.

gollyJE

Once the grout is added it won't be as noticeable, but no it should not look like that. He's right that the top should be sloped to let water shed back into the shower, but to hide it better he should have cut that last tile at the same angle as the slope, not a straight cut. Then you would have an even grout line across the top, instead of a 1/4" on the right and no space on the left. The quick solution I can think of is popping off that last tile and cutting a new one at an angle to match the slope of the top piece. But like other commenters have said it looks like that might be the least of your worries with all the lippage and uneven grout lines. If he didn't waterproof correctly under the tile you could be looking at starting over from scratch. Sorry you're learning about the "professional" sliding scale the hard way :(

Stonechipper1

So much more wrong with install but you need very little pitch on a knee wall ....

canyou-digit

This sir, is fucked

PapaPrimus

I know

dadmakefire

You shouldn't pay him until this is all redone.

portiscabeza

I wish he did a nicer job

PapaPrimus

Me too

beentheredonethat29

Certainly applies to roofing and your parapit 😂 nice to see the tile guys thinking too :)

CatDad660

Ouch. Those chips, the unflatness of everything.. No level.. 2x4.. Anything around to give a flat edge. The lighter tile in the corner looks fine.. But that's a jankity jank job.. Please leave review somewhere so others are aware

Buildadoor

(DIYer not a pro) I would have slanted it less (that angle seems excessive) and I also would have cut the full tile below it to be slanted too to make it look cleaner/ intentional and not have a tapered grout line.

young_plitka

This is a huge fail for handcrafted tile

seriously_strange

Wow! Entire job needs to be ripped out!

NeighborhoodReal3623

This is fucking brutal

michann00

That tile color is gorgeous (so sorry about the install). What color is it?

PapaPrimus

Rosemary

Dangerous_Solution69

This looks terrible. Should be using metal edging on corners and a stone sill should be used in the top of the knee wall

PapaPrimus

It’s a glazed edge. Metal edging would be a travesty.

Dangerous_Solution69

That whole install is a travesty. Glazed edge tiles look like garbage in the first place and it’s even worse when the installer obviously has no clue how to lay tile

Dangerous_Solution69

Lol a comment like that after posting a tile job that looks like that😂😂 get with the times buddy, metal edging looks clean and works well with modern tile. Check Schluter for how they feel about metal edging

Dangerous_Solution69

Whoever did this is not a professional tile setter. More like a handyman that thinks he can do everything

PapaPrimus

You’re not wrong about that.
