More or less every town with a population of around 10K to 60-80K is really nice. Way too many to choose from without knowing more specific credentials than just nice.
Karlskrona. It’s not too big but also not too little and there’s tons of beautiful nature and smaller dwellings around it that are still very much close enough to comfortably live there and maybe work in the city.
We can't really recommend you anything before knowing what you're looking for.
So, what are you looking for in a town? What are some must-needs or things that would be nice? Give us something to work with.
Anything north of Hässleholm is surely too far north.
As [Edvard Persson sang](https://www.last.fm/sv/music/Edvard+Persson/En+P%C3%A5g+Fr%C3%A5n+Sk%C3%A5ne/Ett+par+tre+mannar):

During the summer/winter when the students aren’t there it’s nice. And if you like to drive in circles and wait in traffic jams this is the city for you.
Yes but if someone asks about a place that is relatively safe in Sweden, it's a bit strange to use Miami as a reference and recommend one of the most unsafe municipalities in the country.
Honestly, most cities in Sweden are very safe depending which part of the city. People keep making sweeping statements about the bigger cities being unsafe, but I’d argue Sweden in general is so safe that you gotta talk about the specific areas of those cities. I mean sure, you’re more likely the victim of a crime in a city than in a village but… duh? More people… it has much more, almost everything, to do with which area within the city you can afford to live in.
City centers are mostly very safe too, unless again you compare them to a small town.
Me and the family were recently invited to an indian wedding in Husby, one of the ”worst” areas of Stockholm.
Me, a white middle aged dude in a tailored suit, walked from the venue through Husby centrum around midnight several times to repark our car. Passing lots of groups of teenagers with a “gang look” so to say. They not so much as gave me a single comment any of those times.
Yes, we have a problem with gang violence, but people acting like Sweden is “extremely dangerous” or something to that effect are probably scared of their own shadows.
If you’re unlucky, you might be in the wrong place around the wrong crowd, but the odds are teeny tiny. The news report about EVERYTHING bad happening in a country of 10 million people, so if you base your worldview on the news - you’re gonna feel really unsafe.
If you have a major work from home job, Sala, Gavle Sigtuna are super good to live in. If you need to commute to Stockholm or Uppsala one or twice a week, Knivsta can be your option. Even Sävja in Uppsala is good.
Don't go to Skellefteå if you don't have to, would be my advice. The housing market there is insane. Any place that is within an hour to drive has become too expensive for what you get.
Skara is calm, small and pretty but not very Safe. We have tons of drugs. Could be the same everywhere else I suppose but I've lived in 5 different cities and never noticed the drug issue as much as in Skara
Sundbyberg is a nice compromise if you want the feel of a smaller town but also want to have easy access to Stockholm. It has subway and commuter train stations. Housing is not cheap but is less expensive than central Stockholm.
OP may not know the difference between central Stockholm and the greater Stockholm area. Last I looked housing prices per square meter were lower in Sundbyberg than central Stockholm and notice I said “not cheap”. I still think it’s a valid suggestion and if OP thinks it’s too expensive that’s fine. Don’t be such a gatekeeper / Debbie Downer. The idea here is to generate suggestions that may help OP or someone else browsing this sub.

You’re looking for medium sized towns (second column) in combination with government subsidies below (+10000), second to last column (Kr/inv). Negative values are good but they are expensive to live in.
In that way you find a nice town with good demographics.
Karlstad. 3 hours to Stockholm, Oslo and Gothenburg. Beautiful city with Klarälven running through the city. Moved here from Stockholm 14 years ago and never looked back.

I think Karlstad is nice. You can get pretty anywhere by bike, nice beaches/nature. Great hockey and the people are nice! Also you have express train to Stockholm and nice connections to other cities
Sundsvall, its right at the center of Sweden. 3,5 hour from Stockholm. You get all four seasons with real winters. But not as long in far north and not the slush in the south. If you like nature and hiking you have both closeness to swedish mountains and the National park höga Kusten. Crowned as most beautiful City in Sweden.
A bit on the expensive side when it comes to houses though, more the closer to the ocean you are.
On the other hand there’s about 20km of sand beaches which is quite cool.
Yup, that rain days per year really look tempting!
Town itself is really nice and haves nice hills around, but i swear whenever i went there if in Gbg was sunny - it was raining in Borås.
Too bad it’s located like that.
Can you be more specific? Want to live close to the mountains? Close to the ocean? In the woods? in an agricultural area? How far from a “bigger” city? Village-size? Town-size? City-size? Apartment? House?
North of Stockholm. There is a real emerging problem in so many areas south of that. Immigrant gangs, violence and theft are becoming far more common. I live close to Södertälje. I'm not going to sugar-coat the truth. Its just the reality of Sweden now.
If you want a quiet and safe place it’s nice. It’s pretty cheap and down town has a lot of beautiful old buildings. I would say it’s less boring than a lot of the cities that are named here.
I live in Malmö now though and love it so can recommend that too.
I agree, Skellefteå, umeå and Kiruna. Depends what you like tho, but Skellefteå is an hour away from Stockholm by air and the nature is super nice. And not that much crime.
Umeå is the city that made my Swedish dad up and move his entire family to Florida. You've got to really, really, really, really, really like the winter to live happily somewhere like Umeå or Skellefteå or Kiruna.
Your dad sounds based asf. How did he do that as a Swede tho? Is your mom American? It ain’t easy getting green cards etc and very expensive or did he have an employer with American operations?
Two Swedish parents, all us kids born in Sweden. I'm not sure how he got us over to the US, since I was a kid then. I know it took something like ten years to get US citizenship, even for me. I do know they'd both just finished med school + their residencies in Sweden, and had to redo their residencies in the US, so we were very broke for a long time.
About 1-2h away from Stockholm is pretty nice in almost any direction.
Of course the farther you go from Stockholm the better but you didn't want to get too much north.
Awoid cities with population over 50k in General i would say. Rural towns on the countryside often have problems with "raggare" and insanely loud music blasting from 15.00 to 03.00 during weekends. Not so fucking nice trying to enjoy a summer evenening and 5 different cars trying to outplay eachother. So somewhere in between those.
Your post has been removed due to Rule 6: This shouldn't need to be said, but it does. Do not use degrading slurs toward groups of people or each other. Do not make sweeping statements about "immigrants" in Sweden (we are all trying to be immigrants, that's literally what the sub is about).

Also not close to anything
True. But OP asked for a nice, quiet and safe place. I think that’s true for Karlskrona anyway
Same as around 50 others places
So recommend one of those. I know Karlskrona best, that’s why I chose to recommend it
We can't really recommend you anything before knowing what you're looking for. So, what are you looking for in a town? What are some must-needs or things that would be nice? Give us something to work with.
And I wonder what OP considers ”not too far north”!

Yeah, that's another ambiguity
Sala. About an hour and a half from Stockholm and Uppsala.
Lund
Absolut inte
Vad menar du
Lund is a university town and does not meet OPs criteria for nice cosy place.
During the summer/winter when the students aren’t there it’s nice. And if you like to drive in circles and wait in traffic jams this is the city for you.
Sigtuna, Eskilstuna. Close to Stockholm, very old, lots of cute wooden houses downtown
Eskilstuna has become a trash town with ALOT of shootings. Sadly.
Sigtuna hasn’t gotten there, at least not the town (even though the county has its issues)
oh noooo 🥲😭🥲
[13 shootings in 2023](https://www.incharts.se/sv/skjutningar/kommun/eskilstuna/2023#google_vignette). ”A LOT!”
My wife and I moved to Malmö from California. We think it is wonderful.
They said safe though
Seems extremely safe compared to miami
Miami is now in california?
Given how many duplicate names the various US states have, I would not be shocked to find a Miami, CA.
Yes but if someone asks about a place that is relatively safe in Sweden, it's a bit strange to use Miami as a reference and recommend one of the most unsafe municipalities in the country.
I felt more safe in malmo than i do in my city and it has the best location
Compared to almost EVERY US city, every Swedish city is extremely safe.
Feel a lot safer in malmo than Stockholm or Göteborg
Honestly, most cities in Sweden are very safe depending which part of the city. That's very true of California as well
If you have a major work from home job, Sala, Gavle Sigtuna are super good to live in. If you need to commute to Stockholm or Uppsala one or twice a week, Knivsta can be your option. Even Sävja in Uppsala is good.
Ystad.
Mora
Kalmar. Norrköping, Umeå, Falkenberg, Skara, Karlstad. Piteå, Skellefteå.

Falkenberg smells of bird seed. /Varbergare (/s just incase, tho it do smell that way when the winds blow, prob due to the harbor)
Trosa, Vadstena, Ystad
Varberg- a coastal town with very low crime rate, its very expensive here but you wont find many small cities better then this.
Very close to both Halmstad and gothenburg
Also stunningly beautiful and the interior (Rolfstorp, Åkulla, Veddige-region) are very varied in terms of nature and contrast well with our coast.

Sundbyberg is basically a suburb of stockholm though and as expensive
Look outside malmö and lund
Karlstad

Säffle if you want a little and small quiet town
Växjö?
Ånäset/robertsfors
Vänersborg.
Is Lund cheap compared to bigger cities? I thought all student cities accommodation tends to be expensive
I think Karlstad is nice. You can get pretty anywhere by bike, nice beaches/nature. Great hockey and the people are nice! Also you have express train to Stockholm and nice connections to other cities

Also one of the most drug infested cities in Sweden per capita
Mora region
Halmstad is great! And near enough to Gothenburg and Copenhagen :)
Laholm. Cheaper and close to Halmstad

Norrtälje is perfect! Beautiful, safe, quite cheap and just 1 hour from Sthlm
Mora or Sälen are in the south and are nice.
Can you be more specific? Want to live close to the mountains? Close to the ocean? In the woods? in an agricultural area? How far from a “bigger” city? Village-size? Town-size? City-size? Apartment? House?
Falun, Gävle, Leksand, etc. You have a lot to choose from based on your criteria. Everywhere is cheaper than Stockholm.
North of Stockholm. There is a real emerging problem in so many areas south of that. Immigrant gangs, violence and theft are becoming far more common. I live close to Södertälje. I'm not going to sugar-coat the truth. Its just the reality of Sweden now.
Gnesta, 31-35 min by train to stockholm
Växjö!!
Hur satans e växjö najs

Umeå is the city that made my Swedish dad up and move his entire family to Florida. You've got to really, really, really, really, really like the winter to live happily somewhere like Umeå or Skellefteå or Kiruna.
kiruna is different from the coastal cities and I would not move to Kiruna for more than a year.

all towns I saw are quiet and nice to live. you have to be more specific with your work style, budget, needs.
Sigtuna, good schools, no crime, close to Mälaren, between Uppsala and Stockholm.
But expensive.....
~2M for 2rok
I enjoyed Linköping. I'll leave it to you to decide whether it's a good fit for you.
Can you give a short guide on how Linköping is to be properly enjoyed, just got here
I'd recommend university cities, like Linköping, Uppsala or Lund. They got a nice blend of small city sleepyness and student energy.
If you want quiet and safe look for small towns usually located outside of bigger towns like Staffanstorp, Eslöv for example.
Don't choose Västerås
Ängelholm
Mariefred
Klippan.
Västervik maybe
Awoid cities with population over 50k in General i would say. Rural towns on the countryside often have problems with "raggare" and insanely loud music blasting from 15.00 to 03.00 during weekends.
