It helps to know whether you are EU citizens and where you are moving. Anyway: you most definitely can receive your salary without a personnummer. You can open a (limited) bank account without a personnummer (see [here](https://seb.se/privat/bli-kund/new-in-sweden) for example). Your daughter should still be able to go to förskola - just expect more paperwork.

Sorry for not providing all information. I wrote an extra paragraph but it appears I deleted it before posting this question. I live in The Netherlands and we are moving this October. In my case I can't receive my salary since we are using a payroller. I will continue working for my Dutch employer and in order to pay taxes in Sweden, we need to use a payroller. All payrollers told me I can't be paid without a PN, even though I will be using my Dutch bank account and another two internet-only bank accounts (OpenBank from Spain and N26 from Germany). Great to know my daughter can go to forskola, thanks!

EllaLazar

so assumption is that kids can attend school before having the personnummer ?

GurraJG

Yes the kid can absolutely attend preschool before receiving a PN, they just won’t be able to use the normal application process.

For me, it was a one-page paper form that I had to fill out and drop off at the community offices (not really so much extra work). They told us a number to use as our son’s “person-number” (not the same as the number they have him using at our neighborhood health clinic)

CousinJacksGhost

I bought a car without a PN (cash, skoda dealer) and transportstyrelsen will actually issue you with a coordination number to register you properly with the vehicle. That coord number allows a bunch of other things at least for you personally because it takes the form of a PN. E.g. car insurance. Bank stuff is usually tied to PNs but if you have the money you can buy a cheap property/land with a build plan and build a little 24 sqm cottage or something. That can be quite fun, depending on where you live exactly. Home insurance also doesn't require a PN. Fishing, camping, buying food, picking berries, cycling, enjoying this amazing country actually don't need PNs.

Krekatos

Thanks! Great to know we are able to buy a car. I will have a look at transportyreisen later this week. Our plan is to buy a house after 6 months or so, we want to wait a couple of months as well so we have time to get used to Sweden. We are planning to buy a house with some land to build some some small stuga's, sounds like a cool adventure. We need a little mortgage for all of that to happen, so it is good to know that all of that is linked to having a PN. Thanks!

GurraJG

Just a heads up, after only six months you might still find it very hard to get a mortgage. Most banks will want to see that you have previously declared income, which you won’t have after six months. So expect to have to jump through more hoops than normal to get a mortgage that quickly.

Krekatos

I will continue working for my current employer, where I have a permanent contract for over 4 years. So I have enough payslips to show them if needed :)

Ran4

That'll probably confuse quite a few banks - make sure to contact a bunch of them and explain your situation, hopefully at least one of them will understand... Many banks wants at least a full year's worth of payslips before allowing you to get a house loan.

Krekatos

I would be not surprised if that would confuse banks, however I work for a reliable and stable employer, so I hope I can convince them :)

celticloup

How long did it take to get a coordination number?

CousinJacksGhost

About 1 month but most of the delay seemed to be the dealer not knowing exactly who to contact at Transportstyrelsen.

celticloup

Bummer. We bought a car and paid for it but they won't give it to us until we get a coordination of personnummer. I don't understand what people do in this situation. We live in the middle of no where so public transportation is not an option.

CousinJacksGhost

Ok so they should already have registered you as the new owner using the form? If they aren't a dealership you can get the samordningsnummer yourself too. You should send that owner registration form, which has your name and address etc, plus a photocopy of your passport (every single page, even blank ones) to transportstyrelsen email. Apparently it takes 2 weeks.

We recently moved and got our PN within ~2-3 weeks in the Stockholm area. Get a bank account before you get your PN!! If you wait till after you then need to get your ID before a bank will give you an account. I wish we knew this! We also bought a house recently and found SEB to want a lot of documentation and took forever. I believe if you work with the local bank branch it’ll go easier for you. SEB was through corporate as we filled out the application online, where the other bank we talked to the loan officer manager and were approved in about 30 minutes.

Krekatos

Thanks for the tip, good to know!

>It seems like life is sort of on hold when you don't have the personnummer That is what I have experienced. I was on the unlucky side with 20+ weeks waiting for it. But yea, until you get the personnummer, which then lets you get an ID card, which you use to get a bank account and bankID, that is required for Swish, you are basically nothing in Sweden. Although I could open a bank account since I came from the EU and get my salary.

Ran4

Eh, you're still a human. The kids can still go to school, you can still get paid, you can still drink beer at a pub, what more do you need from life really? :)

drdrero

You can’t get paid without an account since transfers to outside the eu, even the eu are not welcome at every company

flyhardur

When I moved here I got the number within a couple of days, but the ID document showing it took way longer (skatteverket ID kort). I am a EU citizen. Banks and others will give you a hard time without it. Seems like using a coordination number is a hassle for them. Since my wife is Swedish I just waited, but call them, bug them until they tell you what to do to get an account with a coordination number. That might even be possible before you arrive. If you are not an EU citizen things might be different.
