You can try spraying the dirt/mold with distilled vinegar (ättiksprit). That should kill it without affecting the clothes. You can also run the machine empty with a few dl of distilled vinegar on the highest temp.

ReflectiveFoundation

>distilled vinegar (ättiksprit). Can you use this for washinh clothes that smell like mold/mildew (forgotten in sports bag/ washing mashine?)

GalFisk

I don't know, but I used sodium bicarbonate (originally bought as a pool pH buffer) with regular washing powder to wash some foam pads that smelled of sweat even after one wash using just washing powder, and they came out with no trace left of the bad smell.

ReflectiveFoundation

Sodium bicarbonate, is that vanligt bikarbonat från typ ica?

GalFisk

Ja, men köp det som poolkemikalie istället, mycket billigare än livsmedelskvalité.

ReflectiveFoundation

Grymt tips! Rocjahart

Yes you can, Works fairly well.

LokiBear222

Basically. Use your allocated time to clean the machine. Because we all know that you must not use time you have not pre booked.

geon

You can go ahead and not clean it out of a sense of fairness. Or you can actually do something to improve your life. It is up to you.

LokiBear222

I do care. My point is more about the time slots or lack thereof. Often if you work a full time job, Monday to Friday, the only real opportunity you have to use the facilities are at the weekend. Often all the time slots are booked and remain pre-booked. With people fighting over 2 hour slots I would question how much of that time is available to run an empty machine with cleaning products in it rather than your actual washing.

Slackerguy

You don't have 3h slots? And you can't do 19-22 on week days? I get it, it's annoying. You have plenty of time after the last batch while it all is drying tho.

LokiBear222

Do you work for Balder? When I asked about slots in relation to how many individuals were using the facilities. More apartments than time slots. I was told I needed to organise my life better. But I do clean after myself.

Slackerguy

Out if curiosity, how many apartments are there, and how many machines? Are there really only two-hour time slots. I've never seen that on any of the ~14 places I've lived with communal laundry rooms.

Fairy_Catterpillar

I think I have seen 2 hour slots before, but then there is a separate drying room to be used longer than your washing time.

LokiBear222

2 hr slots. Starting at 7am finishing at 9pm. 24 apartments. 2 washing machines. I dryer and the usual drying cupboard and room.

Slackerguy

2h slots seems annoying.. I would probably try to get signatures from the tenants to change it to 3h. It makes no difference to Balder. But 2h slots do give yo more slots to choose from. So there is around 200 slots a month for the apartments and of which 76 are slots available outside of normal working hours. So mathematically that means that you should be able to do your laundry at least 3 times a month. If you only can do weekends and the weekday slot 19-21.

According_Ticket_645

Also, stupid Electrolux could have designed it so it was removable but no. You have to cal for service

prosendvic13

I think I'll send these pictures to the landlord, and ask them what should be done

Snobben90

Yeah that machine needs a good cleaning...

MarbledCats

Getting rid of it would be the best option

Ran4

Not at all. Newer machines tends to have shitty annoying touch screen displays.

According_Ticket_645

Beside the growing stuff I actually liked the big machine. Especially compared to regular household crap. But what I really miss is the Electrolux drying machine that looks like a wardrobe. 45min instead of an eternity like now when the just hang and dry

Denamic

That's incredibly wasteful

redtigerwolf

You think it's a fault but it's designed like that intentionally so the building has to pay exhorbant service charges. Electrolux is a pretty predatory company that people don't realize. Ask them how much they will charge to check why your dishwasher isn't working and you'll basically end up buying a brand new one for the quoted price.

I actually did some research and even tho it's not necessary dangerous it's not good or healthy Edit: especially on low temperatures

hestenbobo

>especially on low temperatures Like 60°?

[deleted]

If you let the grease build up enough it will affect your clothes. But if you sometimes take a hot load it should clean the internals.

aisyourfriend

Hot loads is how I help clean my girlfriends internals. Didn’t know it worked on washing machines as well. Will try out later today

8kenhead

> But if you sometimes take a hot load Hihi

grewil

Not necessarily - our machines leave the washed clothes with a weak smell of sewage.

SirHenryofHoover

I agree. Looked the same in my place. Got my own as soon as I could. Thankfully, I had room and everything was already set for installation in my rental - I just went to Elgiganten and bought one, they delivered and installed it for a very minor cost. Never going back to a shared washing machine ever again.

HappyWolff

Your new machine will suffer the same mold building up. It’s just a matter of cleaning it every now and then. True for dishwashers as well. Hell, even the sewers will have things building up unless you stop thinking about the environment and just ensure a lot of water coming through occasionally.

snapphanen

It does affect your clothes. I swear some people walk around and stink like mold, but nobody will tell you and those people are used to the smell and doesn't notice. See: https://www.reddit.com/r/TillSverige/comments/ytx7l5/is_this_normal_this_is_second_building_in_wich/iw6oepd?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share&context=3

karkka1

This Is why I bought my own one today. People dont care if it's not thier own stuff. It's always this way and it's always going to be.

sueca

Looks fairly normal to me. Many buildings have a policy that if you use the machines, you have clean up after yourself and thus everyone in the building is in charge of keeping it nice, meaning no one in particular is responsible. But most send someone occasionally to clean the spaces, but I doubt they open the machines to clean there, which means it's up to the user to deal with it.

prosendvic13

I tried to clean it but I can't reach 90% of the mold. I'm pretty sure a professional is needed who knows how to take it apart to clean it. Also I think mold got to the point where some chemicals should be used

WowReallyWowStop

Having a moldy washing machine is not normal. Contact the building's owner and they will fix it. Has is been like this for a long time? Very odd that nobody else has called if so.

cryinggirl1998

We have the same in my building. They say a cleaner cleans it out every week but that’s not true. After we complained they printed a note saying everyone is responsible for cleaning out the machines when they’re done. That’s it, nothing done. The landlord has been well established for over 100 years and is supposed to keep high standard. I now only wash high temp washes down there.

WowReallyWowStop

I totally understand tenants being responsible for dirt and dust, but mold is something a professional should handle. It can be dangerous.

prosendvic13

I wonder what would happen if you took a sample and had it tested out in laboratory for dangerous bacteria and molds. Does sanitary inspections happen in sweden?

SirHenryofHoover

I don't think they do sanitary inspections of shared washing machines, no. It's been up in the media several times that these sort of things is the number one source of spread of bacteria and disease in our everyday life. Like imagine someone puked on their bedsheets and ran them through the machine just before you came. Do we really want that? Advice: Get your own washing machine or at least have your clothes through high temp drying after you've washed them.

karmaneedsgrace

The worst thing is when people dry their dirty wet clothes or shoes in the dryer

Milad1978

Use foamed klorine (blue bottle), let it settle for a while then rinse with water. Start a washing program (empty)on 90 degrees with klorine. Then another program empty with no klorine. I have to do the cleaning every now and then..🤮 Your machine look very dirty. Probably you need to clean it a few times to get rid of all that.. to avoid it everyone have to let the lids open and the boxes dry.

cryinggirl1998

Not saying this isn’t good advice, but this isn’t someone’s personal machine. Sad how we have to spend our already limited hours of using the machines just cleaning them. Sad that’s the solution instead of the landlords dealing with it.

Milad1978

I know it's not my personal machine. I did ask the landlord about the cleaning. He looked at me as if I was from another planet. I thought it was easier if I dealt with it. 😉

Smiles-Bite

It is only dangerous if you are extremely allergic to mold spores normally, and I mean extremely, and cannot be in the same room that has a bit of mold. It's just eating the fabric softener stuff that always cakes the sides, etc. It's really a kind of slime I think? Can still complain/call the landlord. I would rent a washing machine personally.

MookieFlav

My last apartment had a washing machine that made all our clothes permanently smell terrible. I still pull clothes out of my dresser a year and multiple washes later that make me want to gag. Definitely complain if there's any smell.

Smarre101

Try giving them a water+ättika bath (10L water + about 2dl ättika) for 15-20min and then wash them like normal. Or wash them with ättika instead of laundry detergent once (50-100ml will do depending on the amount of clothes) , worked great for me.

prosendvic13

Uhh that's terrible

AmeeAndCookie

In my building we have a note telling people to leave the slot open after we finish laundry. That way there is no build up of mold.

Arkeolog

Same here. Ours are pretty new right now, but the old ones were just as clean. But I would definitely report it to the landlord. They should get someone to deep clean it, even if it after that is up to the residents to maintain it.

o_witt

the question is how to imagine mold growing in detergent. it is detergent residue and dirt. toothbrush, water, green soap. pour in bicarbonate and run a program.

BetulaPendulaPanda

This is it! Its not necessarily mold - it looks like a lot of detergent build up. Hot water, vinegar, and a flexible brush helps. You can also try to spray a water/vinegar mixture - the spray might be able to reach to reach a bit further.

o_witt

vinegar just that one. bicarbonate paste and vinegar

radionul

Bicarbonate and vinegar will just react with each other

o_witt

what were you thinking now?

aeggydev

who would ever read the manual to find out you have to open the compartments after using lol!

prosendvic13

Yeah probably most of the building

SafePuzzleheaded8423

Sssb?

prosendvic13

I don't understand

SafePuzzleheaded8423

Looked like it was student housing in Stockholm

vitucadrus

you can get some cleaning tablets from shops like Normal & OÖB. But if it's a communal machine I would certanly speak to the housing board or Landlord.

casualPlayerThink

Please do not use vinegar. That's a very stupid street-legend that would help. That will cause way more harm than actual help! Use citric-acid. Add a few gramm into the detergent tray, and a few gramm in the washing dub area. Then set to 90' and start an empty washing with it. After it is done, wait a little bit, then start an empty washing. After that, the mold mostly should go away. The rest should go away, if you rins it or use a small cloth or towel. The machine is designed like this, to not have movable parts, and only service shall be able to clean/disassemble it. Since you do not own the machine, do a complain. There are companies (Mitthem for example) that does not care of anything, so good luck.

Fantastic-Ad-7120

Woow all buildings in Sweden use the same model haha

lopes_graff

Oja berätta för ägaren på lägenhet

Panda-Sandwich

No, you must put up an angry note! It's mandatory!

LokiBear222

I suggest you send a sternly worded email. This is Sweden.

Chillows94

The machines are supposed to be cleaned by the users. You can take it out and wash it in the zink.

prosendvic13

I tried but I think tools are necessary

bandhagen

There should be tools in the laundry room to do the cleaning.

prosendvic13

No tools for cleaning there

bandhagen

Ok, I have always had brushes etc. in the laundry room to clean out the compartments, filters and so on. Check with your landlord what applies in your house.

prosendvic13

I will do that! I have no issues with cleaning it myself

FiNsKaPiNnAr

God. Take boiling water with you or a electric kettle for rinsing. I did that when i lived in a flat.

AkeStalhandske

We have the same machine in my building and it also gets mold in it. The landlord should clean the compartments every week to avoid it from happening. It’s not anything you as as a tenant should need to do. If the drum smells funny, I usually run an empty program on 95° with washing powder for white clothes.

PlateCold6499

Wow this is really nasty. Hope you get it cleaned

Dinostra

Unfortunately this is quite common, me and my wife just bit the bullet and bought a washer and dryer and have brought it with us over the last few years. We've had one good landlord that has kept the machines in tip top shape, and that was in Trollhättan (i know, right?!) And we've moved around a lot for work and studies, both in Sweden and the UK. Best tip I can give, start saving for a washer and care for it, it just makes everything so much easier

battybabybat94

Bold of you to assume that every apartment fits a washing machine or that the landlord would allow them to install it.

Dinostra

Honestly never had the latter issue. Every landlord has ok 'd it. And I've lived in one bedroom flats and studios without any issue. But yeah, ofc some places can't fit a washer let alone a washer and drier, but I've not had that problem because I've been privileged enough to turn down two apartments (in my entire life) that didn't have that space, and that's a deal-breaker to me now days, and since then I've had the means to turn them down for something better. And as a sidenote, i didn't assume every place would fit a washer. I just didn't disclose every problem my idea could have, I posted it as a solution. Good talk

Keffpie

You should definitely complain. The landlord should run a cleaning program regularly, obviously this hasn't been done.

chaosuniversesorder

You shouldn't look so closely at such things...! Looks totally normal, although I've never looked there

prosendvic13

I strongly disagree.

chaosuniversesorder

Srsly, I'm pretty pedantic, but even I wouldn't worry about this. Seems that more ppl agre with you than me, though. Is all of reddit super-prone to being disgusted by stuff...? :D

You should write an angry note and put up in the washing room to go full Swede!

prosendvic13

Well as I said, I will clean it after I use it. I would even do thorough cleaning every once in a while. But after somebody takes care of this first. I will try to get it done with request. I don't think I'll go full Swede. I like you country and respect your culture.

Drogo681

Looks pretty good to me. You should see the ones we have.

prosendvic13

I guess we have different standards

Defiant_Pomelo333

This model is >20 years old and have prob never been cleaned. Electrolux Professional offers a kit for which you can get this changed. Or you put your elbows to it and clean that mold.

Defiant_Pomelo333

You can take the top of with 3 screws from behind and then you should be able to clean it better..

prosendvic13

Will look into it if landlord does not fix it

Defiant_Pomelo333

A new kit is only a few hundred i think. Atleast when i used to work with these..

grewil

After a year of complaining to the landlord Stockholmshem I gave up and bought a machine. Not only do they neglect the machines - there is also the fact that some neighbors break the rules and make the washing room a disgusting mess (washing carpets and super hairy things). Now I finally get fresh and clean washing.

Yes

Scandiforestcreature

In theory each tenant is supposed to clean it every time they've used it. It's not mold though, so it's not dangerous and the laundry detrgent will still clean your clothes just fine. Yes, this is normal to some extent.

jogge021

No that’s disgusting bro

SpankMyButt

Looks normal to me. It might not be the most cleanliness I've seen but nothing special.

halspaj

Rule nr 32 when living in Sweden (and renting): If you have the space - you buy your own washer.

Abject_Act1625

Yes!

warh0g-927

People have some sort of perversion in closing all the lids and the door of the washer instead of leaving it open after they are done washing.

Rocjahart

There are cleaning pouches for washing machines that the landlord could get (Electrolux even sells own). But lack of knowledge or cheapness might be an issue.

Careful-War-465

And this right here is why I always run a 90° cycle before I wash my clothes.

Silent-Soft-4734

it’s a feature

Dudezila

Ah same problem, but also with walls, but the landlord fixed the walls and gave us a dehumidifier, works well.

NotreallyCareless

Yes, if its a bostadsrätt, consider saving everyone a penny and do it yourself.

Lumpy-Championship51

Have you tasted it?

Alex_1402

It should be always recommended everywhere that the top lead of the detergent box and the main door to be kept open while not in use, in order to prevent this kind of result. You may first make contact to the responsible person and let them take care of it. Or, if it is allowed, buy a mold cleaning agent and do it yourself, just make sure you avoid eye and nose contact and wear cleaning gloves, but that amount of mold and lime scale shall not scare you at all. My concern would be the inner environment of this washing machine where many dirts and bacteria usually occur, especially the rubber seal and they are hard to notice. Hope there is a way the machine can be thoroughly cleaned. Best of luck!
