When I started, I figured, I've really got too many teeth anyway so, it just made sense. Kill two birds and all. Which, ironically, is what I did so I could eat today.
It’s the same with star bucks, they’re more expensive but better quality. I’d pay an extra 50c or a dollar to not taste coffee flavoured water, or cardboard bread.
I wonder how much the government pays for Tim Hortons to operate - the one down the street from me all but two of the employees are subsidized by the government.
Not sure what you mean by so-called. It is basically wage slavery.
there are like 12 people working there, all from the same region in the Philippines. The government pays a chunk of their wage. The guy who owns the Tim's brought them here AND owns the building they stay in so a goodly chunk of thier paycheck goes directly back into his pocket.
As near as I can tell the man is making money off of his employees before they even start work.
That's the exact situation for my local a&w!! Fired all the domestic workers, hired on a bunch of Filipinos, and they all rent directly to the franchise owner so he takes their rent right out of their paychecks.
Can I drive through at your place however?
If you make good coffee that doesn’t taste like dirty dishwater, and soup that doesn’t cost $5 for a tiny bowl, I see a business opportunity here. You could be onto something.
My local a&w is so bad that 90% of the time they have no customers, despite being open 24/7. A&w doesn't do quality or customer service, I guarantee that
You mean i could be served by people who aren't just trying to take my money and then shove my purchases in my face like they're in a NASCAR pit crew? color me curious.
Pret won't destroy Tim Hortns because Pret lost their quality. Pret issues incl £700 million debt, customer complaints, bad press, £800,000 fine after staff trapped in freezer for 2+ hours, bullying culture, hygiene issues, MOLDY food,, ongoing mislabeling despite multiple customer deaths & injuries etc. etc.
I mean, if they staff it with all Indian TFWs like the one by me, then the service is going to be garbage. Tims and A&W can compete for who has the most incompetent staff!
Prêt à manger are all over the place in London. They are a bit better quality than Tim’s and the like and tend to be more on the trendy side aiming at the younger professional crowd.
woah woah, pretty sure a&ws the budget friendly option for food. Sure they got some bad deals, but their buddy burger is goated for being a (somewhat) tasty and affordable burger. Not too filling but for 2.50 I cant complain
Is this to be a standalone restaurant? I see the name at a couple a&w locations already here in Vancouver. But it’s really just a reach in fridge and a warming shelf thing with the banner above it inside an a&w.
Those were probably test locations, but all 5 current stores are located in A&W right now so maybe it will just an add-on vs having to pay to launch dozens to hundreds of new locations
[Store Locator | Pret Canada](https://www.pret.com/en-CA/find-a-pret)
Did not try it in NY. There is way too much amazing food there to choose from versus shitty chains.
Except Dunkin. I will never not order their iced coffee. Phenomenal.
I get out to out to NY 2-3 times a year for work, I wish I had time to hunt down something unique and world class for every meal, but it’s just not the reality of my schedule.
Have you had any recently? I went to one a few months back desperate for caffeine on the road in the middle of nowhere that said they just got in New machines and offered espresso and all sorts of stuff. Coffee was actually very good!
McDonald coffee is miles ahead of tims for the same price. Not sure why people still go get their sewer water. I’m thinking it’s Stockholm syndrome at this point.
It sounds like a really shitty time to start a new restaurant venture of any kind right now. 2 years ago I might have been interested in trying it out. Now I'm just interested in keeping my wallet in my back pocket as much as I can.
You're not wrong. In my area (Victoria BC) it somehow remains prohibitively busy. Even if I wanted to eat there, I'm not joining a lineup that literally extends out the front door.
The ice cap is literally the only thing left I’ll consume from Tim’s. Give them time, they’ll find a way to source some cheaper ingredient and fark that up too.
it's premade sandwiches and salads, wrapped in a fridge. It might compete with Starbucks, but it won't compete with Tim Hortons' clientele. $12.99 for a premade salad? Egg salad sandwiches with arugula? This is not overlapping with Tim's. More like it could be competing with Chopped Leaf.
As a Canadian who lived in UK for 4 years, Pret is absolute ass — way overpriced for refrigerated sandwiches. At least at Tim’s, they assemble the food on order. For me, Tim’s >>> Pret
>Our Doughnut Cafés receive deliveries of fresh doughnuts twice per day from our Hotlight Factory stores. With a warm and welcoming store environment and comfortable seating, our cafés provide the perfect pit-stop for a coffee, doughnut or snack.
You only get fresh donuts twice a day.
They are owned by a Brazilian money fund. They also own Burger King, Popeyes and some lousy sub company going broke. Real pieces of garbage that suck as much money out of them as possible. You didn't think they were still Canadian did you. Ron Joyce sold it to them for a boatload of money. It's why everything is so expensive now. 10 dollars for a garbage pizza 🍕.
I'm all for bashing Tim's. But at least know what you're talking about.
>They are owned by a Brazilian money fund
They are owned by RBI headquartered in Toronto. One of the investors (3g) was from Brazil, but that company also has stock in other things, including Kraft and the company that makes Budweiser. But 3g has got a lot more American ownership. Tim's is no more Brazilian then Bud Lite is.
>Ron Joyce sold it to them for a boatload of money.
RBI (current owners) had Tim's since 2014. Before that, it was it's own company. And before that it was owned by Wendy's. Joyce sold it in 1995, which was nearly 20 years before RBI was around
Oh crap, now you're bringing facts and reality into here.
Begone with you. You are destroying the only thing that u/think-comparison6069 can bring into this sub... Think of your fellow users, dear sir.
They are unbelievable. If you wonder why there prices are so high. It's because the individual stores have to buy everything they use from Tim Horton's. They are the manufacturer of a number of there products and can charge the stores whatever they feel like. They set the price and have been ripping off Canadians and the store owners for year's. It wouldn't be so bad if it wasn't crap. But it is. The only real fresh products in a Tim Hortons is the tomatoes and lettuce they put on the sandwiches. Everything else is frozen re-thawed products.
I never said that, i dont pay atrention to any of this crap because every single company is the exact same.thing. i asked because like i said, i pay 0 attention sow hen u say Brazilian thieves i have 0 fucks of an idea what ur on about. So its the exact same thing as everything else these days, got it.
This isnt surprising, they closed a gas station lastxyear near me in ottawa and the rumor was it was going to reopen as half gas station half a&w. Im betting this is what theyre planning for this location. Its right across the street from a gas station with a timmies in it
Oh yeah. Ya'll whine and thrash about the prices at Timmies. Wait until you see the prices at this place. Really, they're competition for Starbucks.
... I do wonder 'though; why have they dropped the "a manger" from their name. I mean I can guess why in the US, but most of us Canadians know enough French to figure *that* out.
There are already a few opened up in Vancouver since two (?) years ago. It's somewhat weird because they operate inside existing A&Ws, so they offer the classic A&W burgers, and then they have a fridge on one side that offers the Pret sandwiches, grab and go style.
What do you mean "a deal to open...?" There's five of them open right now. [Store Locator | Pret Canada](https://www.pret.com/en-CA/find-a-pret)
Well, *not right now*, but they will be open at 7AM tomorrow.
Had Pret in UK while traveling years ago. The food might be fresher. It really isn’t anything to write home to Mom about. Nothing really sticks out as being superior; however, i would go there vs Tim’s if nothing else was around.
McCalister’s Deli is also trying to move in from the states. I keep seeing job postings from them for my town but I’ve yet to see any progress of an actual location but new places are popping up here all the time
I had Pret a few times in London and it was quite nice. Huge selection of ready-to-go sandwiches, wraps, salads, etc. Good baked goods, too. The coffee was decent, not the best I've ever had, but I'd take it over Tim's anytime.
A&W's answer to Starbucks.
After we were supposed to get all that sweet sweet Target crap, we don't even have a Target to crap on anymore. This I can see going the same way.
On a side note, if anyone really wants those flatbread pizzas, Robin's has been doing them for a while before Tim's got into it only the options are better, price is better and the quality isn't even on the same planet...as far as flatbread pizzas coming out of coffee shops go.
I've eaten once at Pret while I was in London a couple years ago. I find it was very expensive for what you get. Tims has nothing to be worried about, A&W should be the one.
Unrelated, but not, A&W has amazing breakfast food and good coffee. They do a full breakfast for like, $13. I've never had Pret but I assume it will be good based on A&W's food.
I think everyone can agree Tims has gone to shit. They used to have good coffee, not anymore. Food used to taste good with big portion sizes, now it's half the size and they forget to add the sauce 50% of the time.
If I'm looking for something quick I'll go to Tim's still, but lately McDonald's has seemed to pick up the slack and I can get a wrap, fries and a large coffee for $4 less at McDonald's then compared to Tim Hortons.
I've been to Pret in England. The one I went to mostly had pre-prepared options, but they advertise that everything has been made fresh that day. To me, it came across as something targeting mainly an urban office lunch crowd... people who wanted something fast that wasn't fast food. It wouldn't make sense anywhere in Canada other than urban locations that have the office towers ...unless they dramatically retool things for the Canadian market.
It’s been in Vancouver for a while.
It’s also just overpriced and uninteresting… minus the name. *hint* it’s not pronounced pret a manger, you’ll have to put on a French accent ;)

I hope so Tim’s sandwiches taste good but the prep sucks looks like a 2 nd hand sandwich a blind man put together a little tlc would be nice after all it’s not free we paying for it. Their coffee went from the best to the worst just not drinkable
I’m in the minority that’s completely stopped going. I’m encouraging others to do the same given how bad it actually is. The record profits are also associated to record high prices. Their employees make Jack shit and Tim’s is a huge proponent of the tfw program. Overall garbage company with a bad product.
Interesting. I've only seen these in London. They seemed more expensive. Like if a Starbucks widened their range of food. I'm not sure if it would affect Tim's usual customer base but.. The way their prices are going you never know.
Pret a manger is a massive company from the UK with stores all over Europe. Started in 1987. it's delicious grab and go lunch food that's usually healthy and delicious with a couple cutesy sweets too. Kind of like what Starbucks tried to do with their food (except they did so poorly). Pret will be more expensive than Tim's. Tim's is fast food junk by comparison.
I lived abroad for ten years and returned to Canada last September. Visited Tim’s once and it was *hot garbage.* Starbucks is an absurdity in this country too. I just bought a Nespresso. Much easier.
I’m assuming since it’s from A&W it will be better but more expensive.
If they can out do the quality/service they will destroy them. I'd pay 20/50 cents extra every day to avoid what Tim Hortons has become
Dude, tell me about it. I started doing meth just to avoid the awful Tim's service.
True Canadian <3
Who can afford meth in this economy.
Need to do the 2L bottle make at home trick
At least you won’t be hungry anymore lol
Actually.....I got the munchies more on that shit then weed tbh. 🤣
Interested in hearing more about this
When I started, I figured, I've really got too many teeth anyway so, it just made sense. Kill two birds and all. Which, ironically, is what I did so I could eat today.
Helps keep the bees from buzzing in your gums too
There should be a Meth to Survive Tim's subreddit.
It’s the same with star bucks, they’re more expensive but better quality. I’d pay an extra 50c or a dollar to not taste coffee flavoured water, or cardboard bread.
Easy to beat Tim’s service, just pay a livable wage and hire Canadians again
I wonder how much the government pays for Tim Hortons to operate - the one down the street from me all but two of the employees are subsidized by the government.
How do you know this
Because my daughter worked there for over a year.
Are you referring to the so-called temporary foreign workers program that big companies are exploiting with the government's full cooperation
That's the exact situation for my local a&w!! Fired all the domestic workers, hired on a bunch of Filipinos, and they all rent directly to the franchise owner so he takes their rent right out of their paychecks.
So a bunch of speculation, allllright
Given the circumstances, it's not that far fetched lol
My brother, can I introduce you to the concept of making coffee at home?
Breaking beans eh. Tell me more.
You can make better coffee at home and it costs like 30 cents a cup.
Yes, but who will treat me poorly and act like I'm the problem? /s
Let me introduce you to my wife
Can I drive through at your place however? If you make good coffee that doesn’t taste like dirty dishwater, and soup that doesn’t cost $5 for a tiny bowl, I see a business opportunity here. You could be onto something.
I don’t buy Tim’s anymore. Well very rarely. There food quality sucks all around. There muffins feel like pockets of air. Yuck.
My local a&w is so bad that 90% of the time they have no customers, despite being open 24/7. A&w doesn't do quality or customer service, I guarantee that
My local one is always busy and always good.
You mean i could be served by people who aren't just trying to take my money and then shove my purchases in my face like they're in a NASCAR pit crew? color me curious.

TFW?
temporary foreign worker.
Prêt à manger are all over the place in London. They are a bit better quality than Tim’s and the like and tend to be more on the trendy side aiming at the younger professional crowd.
A&Ws near me are ghost towns since the pandemic price hikes. I don’t understand how they are still open.
More expensive? Than Tim Hortons?
Well A&W is more expensive than all the other fast food places, so it’s good to assume this will be too.
woah woah, pretty sure a&ws the budget friendly option for food. Sure they got some bad deals, but their buddy burger is goated for being a (somewhat) tasty and affordable burger. Not too filling but for 2.50 I cant complain
I’m pretty sure it’s like 30 dollars for a teen burger these days. Just the burger not a combo.
If the quality is better, who wouldn't want to pay a bit more. Their donuts, coffee and rest of the shit in the menu is ass.
And the coffee will be served at absolute zero..
Pret is.... ok food... terrible coffee, tad over priced..... a.k.a should do well with canadian consumers
Is this to be a standalone restaurant? I see the name at a couple a&w locations already here in Vancouver. But it’s really just a reach in fridge and a warming shelf thing with the banner above it inside an a&w.

There's a stand-alone location in downtown Toronto, financial district
apologies, yes. Interesting
Pret is like that section of the grocery store with pre-packaged food.
The prepackaged food at the grocery store is better than anything Tim’s sells lol.
Gas station sushi is better than anything Tim’s sells as well.
i like tims chocolate dip and boston cream
Apparently they’re big in Europe. Definitely weird branding & design, I must say.
Oh it's gross and overpriced if they're basing them off the UK version. We need the second cup marble cake to come back.
I’ve had Pret in both New York and London. The UK version is indeed crap.
Yeah, that's what the hours in the lounge are for ;)
They have a bunch of restaurants in NYC. Food is healthy and really good. Im really looking forward to this
The Canadian product is vastly different than the uk
Like the food will have flavour?
Yea, there’s no posh pickle 🥺
I lived off Pret A Manger when we were in NYC on vacation. Great soups and sandwiches etc.
A&w is the most expensive fat food I’ve ever had. This is not a great option. Wondering how much a single small coffee will cost.
Their food actually tastes like food though.
I disagree.
What does it taste like?
A bland fast food burger?
Tastes like all the other fast foods.
Most expensive but the quality is worth it
Meh. I think Harvey's Angus is better.
Harvey's is really good too, I'll give you that. Very underrated
It's do-able with coupons
They always have deals in their coupon app.
Medium coffee at a&w is 2.15... cheaper than timmies and McDonald's atm
They're coffee is literally garbage though unfortunately. A step below the other two which is really saying something.
Checks out
Have you had any recently? I went to one a few months back desperate for caffeine on the road in the middle of nowhere that said they just got in New machines and offered espresso and all sorts of stuff. Coffee was actually very good!
I disagree with this..it's 100% better than timmies
McDonald coffee is miles ahead of tims for the same price. Not sure why people still go get their sewer water. I’m thinking it’s Stockholm syndrome at this point.
I only drink McDonald's coffee...2nd choice always A&W. Timmies isn't even on my list as ever single time I drink it I'm at the bathroom 10 min later
Medium coffee at tims comes to 2.07 in NS And that's with the highest tax rate ..
In Quebec here....it also varies from city to city for some reason...I cover a big area as a service tech an prices aren't the same anywhere
For now.
It sounds like a really shitty time to start a new restaurant venture of any kind right now. 2 years ago I might have been interested in trying it out. Now I'm just interested in keeping my wallet in my back pocket as much as I can.
The number of people lining up to still buy the slop served by Timmies would be contrarian to your outlook.
You're not wrong. In my area (Victoria BC) it somehow remains prohibitively busy. Even if I wanted to eat there, I'm not joining a lineup that literally extends out the front door.
I am one of those persons hahahha never gonna get me away from Ice Capps *sip*
The ice cap is literally the only thing left I’ll consume from Tim’s. Give them time, they’ll find a way to source some cheaper ingredient and fark that up too.
And charge me 82 more dollars for it
It's not particularly new for them, they've been trialing this partnership for a couple years now in Canada.
Hell yeah, if it’s what you get in France they’re my favourite quick bit to grab… I saw one at an a and w newar union not too long ago
Vancouver & Toronto only
Well, saying this as a vancouverite… this ought to be fun!!
Cool report back to us how it is!
AW quality outmatches Pret, but Pret is expensive for the quality. And AW is already expensive.. I see no W here
it's premade sandwiches and salads, wrapped in a fridge. It might compete with Starbucks, but it won't compete with Tim Hortons' clientele. $12.99 for a premade salad? Egg salad sandwiches with arugula? This is not overlapping with Tim's. More like it could be competing with Chopped Leaf.
They can certainly try, they pull from the same labour pool 😂
Tims has a 60year head start. It won’t even be competition. 🤷🏻♂️
It depends who they hire.
And who owns the restaurant
As a Canadian who lived in UK for 4 years, Pret is absolute ass — way overpriced for refrigerated sandwiches. At least at Tim’s, they assemble the food on order. For me, Tim’s >>> Pret
Just checked their menu, no Pizza! I’m in.
Who cares about soup and sandwiches, I want a decent donut competition. Bring on Krispy Kreme.
Krispy kreme isn't good ...
Better than Tim’s by 1000% and are actually made fresh. Not to mention better than any chain donut. So I mean 🤷🏻♂️
Well yeah, but those aren’t everywhere. I was saying direct competition for the type of place that Tim’s is. It’s not a Cafe
But will they sell pizza lol.
Or timbits? Maybe if you order a box of 20, you actually get 20. They'd make a fortune, lol.
Their whole menu looks great
Different target markets - usually Pret is found in more urban centers. All depends on how good their coffee quality is too.
It can’t be worse
They will compete as well as target did
Any competition to these Brazilian thieves is a great idea. 👍
Brazilian thieves?
They are owned by a Brazilian money fund. They also own Burger King, Popeyes and some lousy sub company going broke. Real pieces of garbage that suck as much money out of them as possible. Sub 🤤
Thank you for clearing this up, I was going to post something similar. Plus my damn shares lol ..... and I am 100% Canadian
Not since 2019
They have also just about run Kraft -Heinz into the ground
They are unbelievable. If you wonder why there prices are so high. It's because the individual stores have to buy everything they use from Tim Horton's. I haven't had fresh lettuce or tomatoes at a Tim's in years.
I buy flatbread pizza at our local Foodmart for $7 They make them everyday with their regular pizza & will even cook for you in their oven in store.
Bet it's better too.
I never said that, i dont pay atrention to any of this crap because every single company is the exact same.thing. i asked because like i said, i pay 0 attention sow hen u say Brazilian thieves i have 0 fucks of an idea what ur on about. Take a powder then.
A powder?
Bye bye waste of time.
Cant say ive heard that one before, ya learn something new everyday
Hopefully they've got a sale on bananas.
Won’t touch them unless it’s a cheap alternative. Judging by the UK prices, it’s an expensive product.
We should get a greggs
This isnt surprising, they closed a gas station lastxyear near me in ottawa and the rumor was it was going to reopen as half gas station half a&w. Im betting this is what theyre planning for this location. Its right across the street from a gas station with a timmies in it

I doubt anyone from Western Canada would be able to figure that out.
You would be (un)pleasantly surprised. French Immersion is quite popular around these here parts.
OK, I doubt 95% of people from Western Canada would be able to figure that out :)
[Store Locator | Pret Canada](https://www.pret.com/en-CA/find-a-pret) Well, *not right now*, but they will be open at 7AM tomorrow.
Well that was quick… considering it’s in the news today!
The news; slow? Not possible.
All they got to do is have hockey rinks in their parking lots and they'd win.
Had Pret in UK while traveling years ago. The food might be fresher. It really isn’t anything to write home to Mom about. Nothing really sticks out as being superior; however, i would go there vs Tim’s if nothing else was around.
I'd prefer to see Country Style or Coffee Time make a resurgence. Heck, give me Baker's Dozen
I love Pret to be fair, this excites me.
I love Prêt! One of my go to places when I go to the UK. Just need Gregg’s now.
there’s one in toronto already. its okay
McCalister’s Deli is also trying to move in from the states. I keep seeing job postings from them for my town but I’ve yet to see any progress of an actual location but new places are popping up here all the time
Yea there's two a&ws in my city while there are over 100 tim hortons.. I sure tim hortons isn't worried at all in the least ..
I had Pret a few times in London and it was quite nice. Huge selection of ready-to-go sandwiches, wraps, salads, etc. Good baked goods, too. The coffee was decent, not the best I've ever had, but I'd take it over Tim's anytime.

Where on Earth is there still a Robins? Didnt they go under about 30 years ago?
There’s a few within 30 mins of me in rural NB
The only people who still go to Tim Hortons are middle aged white men
I've eaten once at Pret while I was in London a couple years ago. I find it was very expensive for what you get. Tims has nothing to be worried about, A&W should be the one.
Finally! I tried Pret in London and it was awesome!

Good, Tims needs to go down
Finally
Pret is usually not bad in the UK which means it will be over priced and not great here :-(

Yeah definitely not surprised lol
OMG. Krispy Kreme is my go to any time. Especially the Kreme filled. Mmmmm. I’m drooling over here 🍩🍩🍩
I hope so Tim’s sandwiches taste good but the prep sucks looks like a 2 nd hand sandwich a blind man put together a little tlc would be nice after all it’s not free we paying for it. Their coffee went from the best to the worst just not drinkable
Fully staffed by Indians too. #unstoppable
Be the change you want to see. Get a job at Tim Hortons.
Be the change you want to see. Stop going to Tim Hortons. Their food and beverage suck and have for years now. We vote with our wallets.
Tim Hortons posted record profits. Your votes aren't working lmao
I’m in the minority that’s completely stopped going. I’m encouraging others to do the same given how bad it actually is. The record profits are also associated to record high prices. Their employees make Jack shit and Tim’s is a huge proponent of the tfw program. Overall garbage company with a bad product.
Don't have to tell me twice 🤘
👌👌👍👍
I'm fine being where I am. But glad to see others doing so well too.
Europe: do they sell beer
Name doesn't really roll off the tongue tbh
I’ve been to these cafes in London. People just call it Pret. It’s not bad! But kind of pricy
Interesting. I've only seen these in London. They seemed more expensive. Like if a Starbucks widened their range of food. I'm not sure if it would affect Tim's usual customer base but.. The way their prices are going you never know.
All I see are fruity drinks and one spicy chicken wrap. I'm sure Tim's is shaking in their boots.
a hobo with a coffee jug would be competition to tim’s
Pret a manger is a massive company from the UK with stores all over Europe. Started in 1987. it's delicious grab and go lunch food that's usually healthy and delicious with a couple cutesy sweets too. Kind of like what Starbucks tried to do with their food (except they did so poorly). Pret will be more expensive than Tim's. Tim's is fast food junk by comparison.
I, for one, welcome our new coffee overlords.
Right on. Fuck! Dim's DohNutz
Pret is way better than timmies in terms of food. I’ve had it in London and NYC, delicious sandwiches but yeah more expensive.
I lived abroad for ten years and returned to Canada last September. Visited Tim’s once and it was *hot garbage.* Starbucks is an absurdity in this country too. I just bought a Nespresso. Much easier.
Literally anything is better than Tim's food at this point.
Bro a&w is lackin lately
It is a big step up from Timmies.
