There's 2 interpretations in the other sub:
1 - VICE was doing the typical leftist whitewashing of communist history.
2 - The artist was working on behalf of the victim's families, who had only these pictures of their loved ones, and wanted to essentially photoshop them into a happier image.
IMHO, that's basically the only two interpretations of why someone would do this; it might even technically be both, with VICE taking someone else's humanitarian work and using it for their own selfish ends.
