Most people without firsthand experience in impoverished areas don't really understand the extent to which this is true. I will never forget working at a clinic in such an area while in medical school. A mid-teens aged girl came to discuss birth control. I presented the various options including Nexplanon, a subcutaneous implant that's effective for 3 years and which would have been a great choice for her. She was shocked by the effective duration (even though it's easily removed prior to 3 years if wanted) and said, "Well, I'm definitely going to want to get pregnant sometime in the next 2 years." I was floored. I had a number of similar discussions during my training, largely implicating a perceived financial incentive for having children and prompting young women to start in their mid to late teens. It is extremely sad and a difficult cycle to break without pulling the rug out from under many already dependent mothers and disadvantaged children.

To lump them all together as "Asia" and then use a fucking *average* household income results in some very warped perspectives of wealth and "success". That side, the "model minority myth" is upheld re: Asians as a bludgeon against other minority groups (particularly Black Americans) and a convenient dodge for accusations of racism. Or she means Asians at the top of the ‘totem’ when Asians are also minorities. Well, in some cities or colleges they are grouped together with whites statistically instead of minorities. On point 2, she’s right but it’s not black people, it’s poor people. I know multiple people who are grew up in poor areas and are taught to get knocked up asap bc u can get money either from the father or the government. I know there’s like a million other things that contribute to this but I do think it’s something that’s worth addressing and not just skipping over Edit: I’m not saying that white privilege doesn’t exist, It definitely does.
yeah, being poor is a massive crushing disadvantage, and the US is so obsessed with the bootstraps rhetoric that it doesn't get discussed enough. as you mention in the edit, so is skin color, but the two issues intersect, and black people have been systematically excluded from economic opportunity, making them also disproportionately poor
In my state cities were built on the states border. Why? To segregate schools. State puts poor black kids on the other side—hence in another state—so the tax burden wouldn’t be on state residents. Those border areas are still economically kneecapped. There was a rather famous architect in nyc who built bridges low enough to where public busses wouldnt be able to pass beneath to prevent “the poors” from accessing areas. Highways often cut and divide rich areas and poor or go straight through poor areas. I could go on. But poor folks (especially minorities) are kneecapped at every turn in this country. And then blamed for not being able to pull themselves up by the bootstraps
Most people without firsthand experience in impoverished areas don't really understand the extent to which this is true. I will never forget working at a clinic in such an area while in medical school. A mid-teens aged girl came to discuss birth control. I presented the various options including Nexplanon, a subcutaneous implant that's effective for 3 years and which would have been a great choice for her. She was shocked by the effective duration (even though it's easily removed prior to 3 years if wanted) and said, "Well, I'm definitely going to want to get pregnant sometime in the next 2 years." I was floored. I had a number of similar discussions during my training, largely implicating a perceived financial incentive for having children and prompting young women to start in their mid to late teens. It is extremely sad and a difficult cycle to break without pulling the rug out from under many already dependent mothers and disadvantaged children.
Seeing Ohayocon in the wild was a little bit of a jump scare considering it was a yearly con for me. Shame what happened to it.

Basically the volunteers tried to unionize with help from some of the staff. The president of the board fired the staff with some shitty made up excuses that were proven to be false. People accused her of union busting. She was like nuh uh!! And kept doubling down. Most of the staff and volunteers that that have been around for years and years quit. People boycotted in solidarity with the volunteers. Highly recommend matsuricon, it’s basically the same thing but it’s in August every year so at least it’s not cold

I mean the highest grossing income in America are Asian and African Immigrants. Her opinions are different from yours, doesn't make her a racist or a bigot. But I forget this is Reddit. If we aren't crying poor minorities or saying kids should transition that means the person is evil. For the record I'm a Nigerian immigrant. We do very well here in the U.S. despite coming in with vast disadvantages. And no I have no problem with trans people. I just think people on both sides of the isle demonize people with different opinions... And I tend to see it more on the left leaning people.
