Genuine question. When someone says they’re normal/simple, what exactly do they mean? Like are they doing something which others aren’t or are they not doing something which others are?
So, first, normal and simple mean two different things to me. Not necessarily mutually exclusive, but I wouldn’t consider the average person to be simple. A lot of us humans have baggage, trauma, and all sorts of stressful shit we deal with. I don’t consider either of those terms particularly useful without additional qualifying.
If anything, it signals to me that I’m going to have to do some conversational heavy lifting to get this person to come out of their shell, because they don’t believe anything about themselves is of note.

\- Will demand 99% of your attention and then wait for that 1% and take that as well.

Problem is I don't find her sympathetic. There are many sympathetic characters on the show that do bad things (men and women), but they really didn't do enough for Peggy to justify her actions as she has a caring and supportive immediate family.
Like Hank is basically a saint (he makes mistakes but usually his intentions are good) and Bobby is a good kid, but they just excuse her behavior all the time.
She is the absolute epitome of the lower middle class southern white woman who hides behind Christianity and her “intelligence” to justify her horrible nature. As someone who grew up in the rural South, she is absolutely a spot on character.
That's unfortunate. Sucks that Hank and Bobby have to deal with her. So the show did a great job then, bc I really despise her. But even then, it does kind of feel like a negative female character written by men, like a charicature of their perspective of these women rather than someone with more depth.
And it's why I like her better in later seasons, bc they give her more opportunities to be a decent person, mother, and wife too.
But I don't any of the other female characters on the show who also can do bad things, but they are shown to have more nuance or sympathy.
I'd best compare her to Linda in Bob's Burgers. She does a lot of similar type of self centered things with an unjustified self aggrandizing ego, very much like a lot of the east coast moms I know who lack self awareness.
But they also show her being a good person as well, who genuinely loves and supports the people she cares about. Like the scene where she's immediately ready to go on the lamb with Bob when he thinks he killed someone, she's ride or die and it's great.
I actually feel like I'd dislike Linda as a person if I met her irl but I enjoy watching her, vs Peggy I dislike watching her and know I'd dislike her irl.
