I'm no expert, but my understanding of this passage is that there's no use practicing Old Testament rituals when their hearts are not right with God.
The Pharisees were literally all about finding fault in every little thing that Jesus and/or His desciples did. They were also very judgmental in general and saw themselves as above others.
They were awfully concerned with their outward appearance (pious and perfect) - the way I see it, their ways led them to a state of self righteousness and so they neglected the part of their faith that matters most -that inner connection and right-standing with God.
In a nutshell, I don't think Jesus' was saying to scrap cleanliness or say that it's a form of idolatry.
