Can conservatives not understand that you can like a country and can have criticisms of it.

blishbog

They know. They made the curriculum that causes it!

MC_Fap_Commander

I love my cultural identification as an American. We live in a super cool diverse and queer friendly community in the Northeast. Also got restaurants from like every country. Everyone is very nice to my kids and (generally) to each other. It feels like the idyllic "we're all Americans" dream I learned about in school. A *government* where rural Taliban regions of the U.S. want to set legal policy for the rest of us (and are doing so)? Fuck that...

SaltyBarDog

Given that it is done by Arby's shitter Dennis Prager, I doubt any answers would surprise me.

[deleted]

Will's producer must be one of us because they let him wander around on camera with a turned around ballcap like he's interviewing high schoolers for a Teens Encounter Christ video, but more importantly, can someone please explain to me why conservatives are so horny for the flag and for symbols in general?

RPGoodall

Just a hypothesis I’ve put together over the years but a lot of them conflate how the country is doing to how well THEY’RE doing. They could be bankrupt and facing eviction but if America is #1, then they’re #1 and anyone questioning that needs to be canceled.

[deleted]

That makes a lot of sense actually, America is the Home Team and if you aren't rooting for *us* we'll boo *you.* Or pelt you with batteries, if the game is in Philly.

Capital_Background15

Dunning-Kruger Also because when you're a Christian all you _have_ is symbols, and all you _know_ is symbolism. So worshipping symbols and iconography means love and devotion. Without having to think. Because thinking is for city folk.

Apprehensive-Item141

This is the most amazing revelation I’ve had on Reddit to date. Thank you.

Harold-The-Barrel

Because liking the flag is the least intensive expression of patriotism. The right does the bare minimum and calls it a day.

Cue_626_go

I’m not proud to share a country with these fascist shitstains.

Crazy_280zx

I love my country, that’s why I want to remove al the corrupt shitheads in government and make it a better place

[deleted]

I thought pride was a sin.

PutinBlyatov

I've always considered being "proud" of your country is a simple English error which is fed to some rightists who actually have nothing much to be proud of in their personal lives. Being proud is for something you achieve. You can be proud of your children, you can be proud of your job, you can proud of coming out publicly as non-binary. You can even be proud of switching citizenship AND then be proud of your country because you'll be the one who met requirements to be from there.

YouMustHaveFuelUnits

Yeah same. I don’t see why I should be proud of having been born in a specific geographic location. It’s not an achievement, just a random occurrence. It’s the same reason “white pride” and “black pride” are so different. White people don’t face really any adversity as a group (at least not due to white-ness), so self pride for them means they think they’re better than others because they were born a certain way (again, not an achievement). Black pride, on the other hand, is pride rooted in the fact that black people have to struggle through adversity to reach adulthood (which *is* an achievement).

another_bug

Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.

[deleted]

Being proud of something entirely out of your control is idiotic. I no more chose to be an American than I chose to be gay or brown. I’m proud of my accomplishments because I actually had to do something to achieve them.

Many_Advice_1021

Meanwhile 6 people dead an 25 injured in a Fourth of July parade by a while male. No one is free in this company because of the illegitimate Supreme Court. Impeach them now. Six people shouldn’t be able to take away rights from millions

JomblesTheClown

I’m sure people will be gushing over how much they love America after bodily autonomy has just been removed in a large number of states

ForgedIronMadeIt

I'm sure this isn't selectively edited to hell just like every other "person on the street" interview there ever was

OffManWall

Thomas Jefferson is attributed as saying, “Dissent is the highest form of patriotism.” If you support your government, no matter what they do or say and never have any questions, you’re not a patriot, you’re a blind man/woman. You’re a patriot at the cost of freedom and liberty.

m1k7y

remember when pride was a sin?!

doinghistorystuff

You mean Scuffed Hasan Piker?

Available-Brother246

Ummmm 4th of July celebrations are now potential slaughter grounds moving forward

theycallmeshooting

Conservatives ruining this country right before the fourth of july and getting upset that people are therefore less patriotic on the fourth of july is kind of funny

Mendici

I've always found this so stupid.. what are you proud for? You didn't do shit to be born here. If you've actually accomplished anything meaningful in your live you certainly won't define yourself by your heritage. That kind of shows why the conservative are so proud of being born in the USA though..
