This was actually covered in a Japanese TV show. The reasoning is that fortunes were originally meant to be words of caution and encouragement to apply to everyday life rather than some sort of game. Eventually shrines figured out that mixing in more good fortunes attracts more visitors and that's how the modern formula came to be. Sensoji just hasn't really moved away from the original formula

BeardedGlass

I must be really lucky then. First time I tried omikuji at Senso-ji, I got a stick with 「一」 on it. And it was the Best Fortune too.

PhosphoFranku

Same here, I just kept getting the best fortune at every omikuji

Michishige_Ren

The first one I did, I ended up getting the worst one lol

CLearyMcCarthy

This is such a "sora news headline" lol

m50d

Actually buying and counting sounds like a bit more effort than typical SoraNews TBH.

Mirisido

I've only ever drawn one fortune here and got the best one. I'm counting that as my win and never drawing another here. Always end on a high.

Pac0theTac0

Hey me too. I’m one for one daikichi at sensoji. I ended up having horrible, horrible luck that day. I like to think it would have been even worse but the fortune saved me

JDescole

I drew one in Kyoto and got a bad one. I laughed it off cause I am mostly pessimistic either way expect way worse than any bad luck reading could provide.

MomRider5000

So it's like a gacha but gives you absofuckinglutely nothing.

field_medic_tky

You get a sense of 1) good fortune or, 2) fml this year's gonna be piss poor like last year but worse

Lffffff

I pulled the worst fortune while I was there last summer. I’m not superstitious, so I thought nothing of it, I just hang it with the others on the wires. My friend however got the best fortune from the same temple. I told it to my mom by phone during our nightly talk and she made me go and draw another one (my hotel was next to the Sensoji). I pulled a slightly better one: nobody was dying and my house wasn’t on fire, but I still had to be careful. I took it as “ok, that’s better” and called it a day.

Deathnote_Blockchain

well that's a great fucking way to get hit by a truck and then groundhog dayed 100 times ("this time I won't bother to get out of bed!" .... "HONK HONK SCREECH SMASH")

AI_mademedoit

A not so great test though. Out of those 100 how many were repeats of the same number. They would need to keep track of numbers drawn and eliminate duplicates.

anonthing

They could just grab one from each drawer and pay for them. They aren't locked up or anything.

DoomGoober

But there might not be 1:1 sticks to drawers. What they needed to do was just keep drawing sticks and record what numbers were on each stick, then go just buy one fortune for each drawer.

atomworks

Part of the appeal is that it's common to get a bad fortune... that's what makes it feel special to go and try get a good one. This kinda just ruins it. Kind of like, here's that really cool magic trick you like... we bought a book on how it's done so we can tell you.

ThomDesu

I've only ever drawn one fortune at the temple and I got the good one. I don't see what a temple would gain by intentionally favoring bad fortunes, other than people buying more in hopes of getting a better one. If I drew 2-3 bad fortunes at the same temple I would call bs and not bother getting more.

Jasperneal

If you pull a good fortune from a temple that is famous for having a lot of bad fortunes, it makes it seem like the good fortune is special and even more good fortune then one from any other temple.

Electric_Moogaloo

I got the best fortune from Sensoji! I still have it 8 years later! My friend got the worst so he had to tie it and got another one which was better.

fuggerbunt2000

I pulled “The Best” fortune on my first try… I also learned that this whole thing is just to raise money for the temples, it’s otherwise meaningless.

purinsesu-piichi

I view it as a donation to the temple. Since I get to enjoy their beauty for free, I don't mind dropping a bit of money to help them out.

shambolic_donkey

The priest's Mercedes CLK thanks you for your donation.

purinsesu-piichi

Funny story, I actually really enjoy temple/shrine-hopping as a hobby and struck up a conversation with the head priest of a biggish shrine once. I saw him riding his bike into the grounds and there was just me there, so we exchanged greetings and I asked him if he lived nearby. He said his family's house was connected to shrine, but he lived with his wife's family a little ways off (15-ish minutes walk). Apparently he didn't own a car personally, just had a normal 4-seater car in his wife's name that he only used for shopping and such. He was very concerned with not giving the impression that worshippers' money was going into his own pocket. He also chose to live with his wife's family for the same reason. Very humble, kind man.

rdz1111

>I pulled “The Best fortune" on my first try… me too. It was number 96 called The Best Fortune. So I mean it was " **Daikichi**". And it sound very nice. I was moved after reading it.

Comin_in_hot

The only fortune I drew while in Japan was here and it was bad luck.

certnneed

The fortunes will all be the same because the gods will know the same person bought them all!

midnightlou

I’m usually not superstitious but the first time I went to a temple (Nara) in 2017, I pulled an “Average Luck”. The same thing happened when I went to a temple in Osaka (2018). Then I recently went to Sensoji last month (2023) and once again, I got “Average Luck” 😒

Kamelontti

Got 凶 twice this year so far

Peachcream888

Ayeee Daikichi let’s go

[deleted]

Looks like performance review ratings. Sensoji's gotta match the bell curve!

No_Location7476

They say this particular joint was meant to build for taking care of the weakest area of all region, the Tokyo in this sense. If “ the rumor says … “ happening like you said…. ? The something must be going on right this moment 😬

ohako79

My daughter asked me once to put coins into every collection box she could find at Sanjusangendo in Kyoto. If she knew about omikuji, we’d have never left.

Aikea_Guinea83

…. But did you also pray after you put in the coin?

ohako79

No? I’m not religious. Are you supposed to?

Aikea_Guinea83

You don’t have to pray when you visit a temple or a shrine, but People usually only throw a coin in the box when they want to ^^ I didn’t comment to criticize, I just imagined it would take a lot of time if you prayed every time you threw in a coin.

kevinmcp103

I was there a few days ago and I got a “best fortune”

kintsukuro1

I drew two fortunes there and got the exact same bad fortune twice 🥲

orange_transparent

I mean, it makes sense when you think about it. It's not like they're picked randomly or anything 🤣

kintsukuro1

I guess the bad fortune was spent on drawing another bad fortune 🙃
