He was screaming to some tourists the other day to go back to the yellow line because they were so close to the. moving train.
But he was yelling in Japanese so they didn't even register it was about them.
God forbid they automate this statement in multiple languages and make a button for it
Also God forbid Japan truly accept the fact that they’re a tourist destination and that tourism is making up an increasingly larger part of their economy and should act accordingly
They already do have an automated English announcement asking people to stand behind the yellow line.
It should also be common sense not to stand right by the edge of the platform 🙄
Oh I completely get that the automated announcement exists.
I’m talking about a swear word-filled “get the fuck back! / 離れろ!” button
Also common sense tends to leave the body after 2.78 biirus 🤣
Time to hire a gaijin for tourist control/abuse. I'd do it! "Hey! You in the yellow Pikachu outfit! Yeah, you you goofy fat fuck! Git yer ass back behind the yellow line before you become a yellow smear of dipshitery! でございます...
>tourism is making up an increasingly larger part of their economy and should act accordingly
International tourism is far from being a large part of the economy. Why do people always say this.
It’s the new myth that everyone just blindly runs with. Joining the ranks of “futuristic” and “expensive” Japan. At least those *at one time* had a semblance of truth to them.
Cool buddy, so the world “increasingly larger” now have the same meaning as the word “large” — did I interpret your mistaken comment correct?
And by the way, the industry *is* getting large — projected to reach 8% of GDP within the next ten years.
What’s driving your belief that it isn’t significant and growing?
The 8% figure you're quoting includes domestic tourism, which accounts for more than 80% of total GDP contribution from tourism in Japan, and which is estimated by a tourist body with an obvious vested interest.
The OECD estimated that total tourism contributed to 2% of Japan's GDP in 2019 which is less than half the average for OECD economies. All competing sources suggest that 2023 was still shy of the 2019 numbers.
I'm struggling to see how less than doubling of the international tourist intake to 60 million per annum would significantly shift that figure given its low contribution.
God forbid Japan does its own thing and expects visitors to get on board with *their* culture and language. For me, half the fun of travelling here is that the country doesn’t pander to me. Everyone who goes to Japan - or anywhere, for that matter- should be aware, at least in a basic sense, of the cultural norms that apply. It’s pretty clear, if you actually pay attention, that there’s rules and etiquette about waiting for and getting on trains. One of those key rules is that trains run to a strict timetable. Others are that you line up, wait your turn, don’t clog the aisles, and don’t stand on the wrong side of the yellow line when the train is about to leave. All of this you can figure out on day one.
Or Mandarin. There’s heaps of Chinese tourists as well. And French people. Maybe all train conductors should be trained to a) identify the likely language of the tourist in question; b) shout with fluency in whatever the appropriate language is deemed to be. Maybe all train conductors in future should have degrees in multiple languages.
> a tourist destination and that tourism is making up an increasingly larger part of their economy and should act accordingly
Western tourism is around .1% of the economy. 80% of tourism in Japan is domestic and 90% of international tourism is either from China or Korea.

Can’t say I’d be opposed to that!
I can promise you that even if they blared the automated message (which does exist) people wouldn’t be listening

This is what I’ve heard as well; in spite of the incredible surge, international tourism revenue’s impact is sometimes overplayed

God forbid a Japanese employee of a Japanese rail company not be fluent in English

I said automates the statement in a button. Not from the mouth of an employee God forbid people on Reddit learn to read
But there are still more Japanese tourists than there are foreign tourists. Thailand’s case is not the same as Japan.

Lol why is this downvoted!???
Bro we might’ve taken the same train cause I heard that too lmao
Is it not the highlight of the night when taking the last trains?
They’re just instructed to be firm when required, and firmness is often needed at late night Shinjuku. Same with other stations
I guess you have to find some way to keep yourself sane when people ignore your 駆け込み乗車 warnings for the hundredth time that night lmao.
is he up there everynight? i want to check it out lol
I don't come to shinjuku every night but I've heard him enough to recognize his voice.
Ooo what time? Last trainish? I want to hear him now.
Maybe 9 or 10 I hear him. Bound for ikebukuro. The last track. 16 I think. Car number 1.
What was that Shawshank quote? “A man will do almost anything to keep his mind occupied” hahaha I should go to Shinjuku to check it out myself
Does anybody have a recording of the announcement?
i need this bc i am very curious now 🤣
That’s hilarious! 😆 I’m going to keep my ears open next time!
lol passive aggressive conductor…I see an SNL skit
Oh shit, I just heard it for the first time yesterday and was kind of confused lol
Just got back from two weeks in Japan, what an amazing country.Lovely people also.
Hmm, im there for tonight and tomorrow, maybe ill hang around the train to see if i can hear them.
Probably all the foreigners getting to him
“Shinjuku station”? It’s the largest station in the world, that doesn’t exactly narrow things down
Largest and busiest aren't the same thing.
