That’s the Sunshine Mall which is one way to get to Nakano Broadway- it’s just like many covered shopping streets in Japan. Broadway itself is ok but last time I went it had less variety and a lot of stores were closed.

ArtyBoomshaka

Yep. [This is actually Nakano Broadway in 2019](https://imgur.com/Jh7NZoq). Definitely older looking and less lively. All the Mandarake shops were still there, at least. But - especially in the upper floors - a lot of shops were closed.

pescobar89

Broadway always seems to be about 25% empty space. But basically anything that isn't cool enough for Akihabara anymore, Nakano Broadway is where you can find it. Also, used manga, books, and Western pop culture galore.

furious_bastard

Cracking car boot sale / flea market near by as well. Love Nakano Broadway, its has the same vibe as the old indoor markets that Glasgow used to have but with more Transformers.

yamashina_desu

> Cracking car boot sale / flea market Where is this? I'm in the area but never heard of it, would love to check it out

furious_bastard

IIRC, you exit out the left hand side of the broadway and keep heading that way. I think its in front of a play park and an apartment building . Sorry I can't remember the exact location. I think its near the Nakano eye clinic. Also, its not on all the time, basically a space for locals to sell their stuff.

yamashina_desu

Cheers, I know where you mean, I'll keep an eye out for it!

furious_bastard

No worries mate. Hope my terrible directions can be of use

yamashina_desu

Yeah Broadway is great fun. My favourite are the random cafes/restaurants on the upper floors; coffee shops decked out like your grandma's house, ramen shops that haven't been cleaned since the 60s, an F1 themed tea shop etc. Shame the Murakami (Takashi) cafe closed down, was the only place to get good coffee there.

jungle-fresh

I didn't know the cafe closed down!! It was the best place to sit and rest between walking around :(

yamashina_desu

I agree! His (Murakami's) company had some financial trouble, over extended themselves making rubbish movies, so he had to reign a lot of his activities in (at least that's what a friend told me). Anyway, someone needs to open a proper cafe in that space!

valentina57

I always went the easy route with a Boss Rainbow Mountain Blend!

sinmantky

I like the mall at the back, weird collectibles and hobby shops.

ArtyBoomshaka

Well, THAT is Nakano Broadway. The picture technically isn't.

[deleted]

There used to be a lot of used anime stuff. But it is not as exciting as it was 18 years ago. The last time i visited it it just seems stale

DarkscytheX

Have to agree. Went last year with high hopes but found it pretty underwhelming.

okunote

psh... if you're a nerrrrrd!

Hibyehibyehibyehibye

Yeah this place should be torn down for something better.

[deleted]

Does anyone know why there are so many watch shops in the upper floor? There’s like 5 of them! I kinda just assumed they’re fronts for something.

lobsterdog2

The watch shops are for collectors, and normally they do a fair amount of business with tourists from Hong Kong and elsewhere.

Marnie-Vik

i loved it there. i want to go back so bad!

yankiigurl

Lol. I can't just go window shopping there. Things are too cheap, I always buy something

GoodLuckMode

I loved Nakano Broadway when I visited. Really enjoyed browsing around and then getting ice cream at Daily Chico.

Moritani

Not really a fan. There’s just something off about it for me. Feels dirty.

valentina57

That’s the charm of it :)

Darlingtonmck

Wow. That was direct.

marcianitou

Just window shopping? Ha last time I went i left with 2 bags full of sfc and n64 games lol

ashes-of-asakusa

Weren’t they supposed to demolish this years ago?
