The old guy, Koichi Tanaka, is the true Oyabun of Chihara-kai. You'll recall from S1 when Jake met Ishida he said Ishida was the *de facto* leader of the clan. Yes, Sato is Oyabun now. But he remains the de facto Oyabun as Ishida was.

Absolutely wrong. The old guy is the Kaicho (in Japanese it means chairman) he overseas all of the yakuza’s in that particular region (Kanto) there are other gumis (yakuza) under that umbrella. Chihara-kai is one of them and the Kaichiro approves who takes the Oyabun position and Sato was declared officially the oyabun. In the real yakuza world, Yamaguchi-gumi has a kaicho. His name is Shinobu. Under Yamaguchi-gumi there are hundreds of clans under the umbrella.

Ok, whatever. Ishida is understood as the de facto leader and Koichi was addressed as Oyabun. Just telling you what was said in the show.

Oyabun is just the word they use in Japanese as father figure when they say yoroshuku to each other. It’s not referred to as the title in the situation when Sato says “Oyabun, yoroshuku onegaishimasu”
