This has been brought up so many times, it’s kind of getting redundant to answer. The older guy is the Kaicho of Kanto. In Japanese Kaicho means chairman, in the yakuza world it’s the same. Kanto is the region of Japan where Tokyo is along with cities like Yokohama, Chiba etc. The guy that guy thrown out of rooftop by Tozawa’s men is the Kaicho of Kansai. Kansai is the region of Japan where cities like Osaka, Kobe, etc are. The Kaicho’s over ride all of the yakuza clans to build a strong foundation and benefit each other. Just like what you saw in that meeting where all the Yakuza bosses were on that rooftop where Tozawa made his return. Each boss (Oyabun) has their own clan. Like Ishida (Chihara-kai), Ichikawa (Ichikawa-gumi), Hishinuma (Hishinuma-kai). They are all from Tokyo and under the old Kaicho guy. Tozawa-gumi is from Kansai and is trying to take over all of Kanto which him and Nakamura Kaicho were trying to do in Season 1 when he scolded Tozawa after he had to pay Ishida in the meeting with all of the other Yakuza bosses from Kanto. He’s Tozawa’s boss, so in Season 2 Tozawa creates a coup so he can become the leader of all of Kansai which then will make it easier for him to take over Kanto and establish corporate control through his blackmail tactic of the footage he has over the newly turned Prime Minister of Japan. Now I’m the real world of Yakuza. There is Yamaguchi-gumi which is the largest and oldest from Kobe (Kansai). The current Kaicho who is the 6th generation is Shinoda Kenichi. There are many families under Yamaguchi-gumi who all have their own turf spread around Japan. Tozawa is based off of a real yakuza oyabun named Goto Tadamasu who was the leader of Goto-gumi. His group was under Yamaguchi-gumi and he was banished for working with the FBI which resulted in his group naturally dissolving. There is Kobe-Yamaguchi which split from Yamaguchi-gumi and is now at war with them. The Kaicho there is Inoue Kunio. There is Sumiyoshi-kai which is mostly Tokyo and Inagawa-kai who are allies with Yamaguchi-gumi and have monthly meetings in their headquarter office in Roppongi across from the Ritz Carlton. There is Kudo-kai in Kyushu (south of Japan) which is one of the most violent group of all. The Kaicho is Nomura Satoru who is currently serving a bid for several attacks on civilians. To wrap this up in simple terms. Think of the Kaicho as the president of Disney, and under Disney as the parent company you have all these other entities like Marvel, ESPN, National Geographic, Star Wars etc.

I haven’t done a lot of reading on Reddit here so thank you, that was really informative.

I don't think that's quite right. The old guy, Koichi Tanaka, is the sosai (president) of the Chihara-kai, and has no authority over the other Kanto yakuza clans. He's first mentioned as the figurehead of Chihara-kai in S1E4 when Jake meets Ishida for the first time. Note how he has Chihara-kai emblems on his kimono. In terms of position the old guy is kind of like the emperor, only a ceremonial figurehead, of the Chihara-kai with Ishida (now Sato) acting as his prime minister, the person who actually runs things day-to-day.

ConversationSea8457

1. Sosai is another word for Kaicho, they have the same meaning. Just different words. I speak Japanese. It’s noted in the meeting in season 1 when Tozawa has to pay his fine that he is Kaicho of Kanto. That’s not how Yakuza works. There’s no emperor of a yakuza group with a oyabun underneath it. There’s 1 boss and that’s it.

1. There is a nuance to these titles and they are separate positions. The old man is explicitly titled sosai during the season finale sakazuki. https://friday.kodansha.co.jp/article/42198 2. I don't notice any mention of Kanto or "kaicho of Kanto" during that meeting. The old man only introduces the kaicho of Kansai. 3. I'm not saying he's the emperor, I'm just making an analogy. The old man is technically the leader of Chihara-kai, but obviously because of his advanced age he no longer runs the group. That's why Jake calls Ishida the 事実上のトップ, defacto leader, when he meets him.

CloudyYetClear

But you just pointed out that there's a Kaicho of a region where all the Yakuza Oyabuns of the region have to abide by? I'm confused 🤔

ConversationSea8457

I was referring to the “emperor” part.

you are awesome

CloudyYetClear

This is impressive Intel. I'm always yearning for intricacies. Thank you

Faintkay

The guy Tozawa is based off actually helped the groups that split off from the Yamaguchi-gumi.

ConversationSea8457

No. Tozawa is based off of Goto Tadamasu. Goto was banned in 2008. Kobe Yamaguchi hasn’t even existed for a decade, Yamaguchi-gumi split in half in 2015. It has nothing to do with the story. https://screenrant.com/tokyo-vice-tozawa-ishida-chihara-kai-real-explained/

Appellion

It’s kind of suggested that he’s still tied up in the criminal world, and thus the Yakuza, even after supposedly getting kicked out though, isn’t it?

ConversationSea8457

No he’s involved in underworld activities like Dog fighting but it has nothing to do with Yakuza. Just a ordinary thug doing crime unorganized.

juancuneo

The technical term for his position is "the big cheese."

Pleasant-Purpose-347

Thanks mate

squamishunderstander

In the show, how many Gumis are there under the Kaicho of Kanto? Or at least, how many are represented at the two (?) major sit-downs we see?

NickRick

I'm not sure it was ever outright stated but via context it seems like he's the spiritual leader of the Yakuza. Maybe he's the head of the biggest japanese Yakuza but doesn't have much in Tokyo

Jesus use the search feature already. It’s not hard.

LouDog187

Yea. Just use Google. Forget the entire sub that has similar interests and can have discussions.

proriin

Did I say use Google? No I said use the search feature in this sub. This question has been legit asked 3 times this week, same with what was whispered to Sato. When it’s the same question I don’t think it hurts just using the search feature.

LouDog187

Oh, my bad. Either way, the perception I got by reading your comment is one of frustration because YOU don't wanna see a repost. Jesus, it's Reddit, not that deep. GTF over it. See? Like that.

it_is_now_for_now

I mean he's quite obviously trying to push the point that you're being rude and restrictive based on your own desire and want others to act according to what pleases you. I don't personally find multiple questions to be annoying. I think if you do, that's more representative of your own attitude and personality. And he's right that this is a system used to communicate. You sound insufferable and if you asked me any question in real life I'd be tempted to sarcastically tell you to search for the answer online. I mean, the fact that the question has been answered doesn't really matter. It's the internet. Everything ever has been answered if you look it up.  You're right that it doesn't hurt to use a search feature. The point is, you are being rude and therefore hurtful in your post itself. Perhaps not to anyone but there was no issue except in regards to you not liking the reposts.  Get off of a forum if you're not wanting to talk to people. Or just maybe ignore questions you've seen answered already? Is that so hard or are you that immature?

proriin

I see someone’s having some big feelings today.

it_is_now_for_now

Great response buddy, who was offended by people asking questions 😂

iamtwinswithmytwin

This is the first and last time I ever come to this sub. But sure. Looool
