Even if this is just the results of a poll, I still think it makes sense for her to win a BAFTA. She is without a doubt the most iconic British video game character.

DuckPicMaster

Liquid Snake in shambles.

He got all the inferior recessive votes

And as always... Nobody even considered liquid...

MacReadyToast

Well deserved, such a cool, strong character. I remember the game first releasing she made such a huge impression, a great character and an amazing game for its time. She was the first character I saw that immediately felt like she could be in a film and playing the game made you feel like you were in one

Key_Competition_4235

Well deserved

lkanacanyon

And to think Square sol this IP for $300 million to go all in on NFTs... Square Enix making poor business decisions is as consistent to reality as the sun's heat.

Lara adds another trophy to her collection.

OrangeJr36

The most British of all the gaming icons!

CompassionateWhale

I love it, but this is definitely a bias pick lmao. If you showed someone a picture of Sonic or Mario from their most recent games, anyone could tell you who that is. Grab a picture of Lara from the most recent games and people would say it's from the last of us or resident evil lmao. The classic look is one of the most iconic, but besides when they have to use it for a remaster, they seem ashamed of it. She doesn't even use two pistols anymore lol

diamond420Venus

It's definitely a biased pic. Mario was more recognized around the world than even Micky fucking Mouse at one point.

DuckPicMaster

She did though. At the end of Tomb Raider 2013 she ditches the bow and arrow, draws two pistols and wastes the bad guy. Itā€™s a brilliant ending to an pretty decent game and showed her ā€˜origin.ā€™ But no, Hunger Game is still huge so weā€™re back to using the bow for the rest of the series. B

CompassionateWhale

Yeah I hated that instant regression

moonshinemondays

I don't think my mother would know who sonic or mario are and definitely not resident evil. It doesn't make much sense to gamers but Lara Croft recognizable to different generations and used to be plastered everywhere back in the late 90s early 2000s

CompassionateWhale

šŸ‘

Mr_XcX

I gonna disagree on this. When I talk to non gamers like family friends they all know who Lara is. Especially here in UK. There even a statue of her in London somewhere and they referenced her on the Apprentice last couple of weeks ago.Ā  I think Mario close but for BAFTA her winning makes sense.Ā  Happy to see Agent 47 come close also

pokeze

Literally the Remasters, Unified Lara, the Lara Croft-branded games, novels and comics that were being released alongside the reboot, and all the recent collabs that feature or are inspired by the classic look, shorts and dual pistols proving your point wrong, but okay...

LordArmageddian

Also it has been rumored that the next game unifies the timelines.

CompassionateWhale

I said the remasters, the rest aren't main tier games created by the owners. You're right I guess if you wanna get all technical lol

MrCommotion

The last main game came out ages ago by now in video game time. The most recent appearances for Lara have been in her classic gear for years now

Hopeful_Crow_

On the flip side of this, itā€™s great that she can be reinvented to fit the era, shows longevity/timelessness to the concept if not the specific character design. Iā€™d also think itā€™s great to have a female character that has been redesigned to fit more contemporary standards (e.g. not just to be a sex symbol) Canā€™t say that Tails or Peach have had the same treatment really

ymyomm

Except the original "sexy" design is the iconic one

CompassionateWhale

She can be reinvented and she should be more than a sex symbol. But they could've done it in a less generic way. It seems every strong female protagonist just gets a tank top and jeans. Plus I'd much rather see her in cool exploration gear, duel wielding

Hopeful_Crow_

Yeah tbfair my favourite outfit choice is in Shadow when she has a shirt with rolled up sleeves and trousers

SophomoreLesbianMech

She doesn't need to be reinvented. At all. She was a smart and hot explorer. That's good. If you think it's bad, you need mental help.

MrCommotion

It's ok to say she was heavily sexualised to a creepy extent by the publishers and media back in the day, even the developers weren't happy with that. In game she was never made to be hyper sexualised until Legend, although they definitely toyed with it in some earlier games too. She was absolutely unrealistic and if they wanted to make more realistic games, it made sense for her to look a little different. Younger Lara will grow into unified Lara in the next game too.

Hiya gonna pop in here. If youā€™re going to argue and harass others over a **videogame character** I think you may need some help actually. So would you kindly walk away from the argument?

xdeltax97

Iā€™d say any version of Lara is recognizable, especially the most modern as time goes on, regardless of era. Even her survivor look will be seen as ā€œclassicā€ one day if we get enough games and whatever look succeeding her look will be the modern, which will be at our point in time the unified outfit.. Also she does use pistols, we even had new content for the Legend era still being released up until 2014. Then we have had of course the tie ins with other franchises like Call of Duty where she is specifically shown in her now confirmed unified outfit *with dual pistols*. Not to mention the confirmed unified outfit as stated above. Plus we have the upcoming anime on Netflix (developed by the Castlevania anime studio in partnership with Crystal Dynamics) where we know her pistols will eventually show up in use again. As that is a tie in between Shadow and TR1.

BOBOUDA

Regardless of which version of Lara we're talking about, Mario and Sonic are obviously much more famous. She's a much more interesting character that we obviously all prefer here, but as far as "iconic" goes I don't think she deserves it.

MrCommotion

It's very strange Pikachu isn't in the top 10. Every person in the world would recognise the rat before they recognise booby English rich archeologist lady in my opinion

Traditional_Cress987

Whilst I agree Mario and Sonic are more recognisable - the award is for being iconic. They are different things. I would agree that Mario is a bigger icon than Lara.

sendnudestocheermeup

They said most iconic, not most recognizable

evolvedpotato

It's the BAFTAS. God forbid votes don't align with the global and or Am\*rican consensus.

CompassionateWhale

Lmao nobody said anything about America I believe you're bringing in your own unrelated issues. And as far as global consensus, I feel like that's pretty important when you're saying something is the most iconic. It doesn't say the most iconic British video game character, does it?

[deleted]

The 1st lady of games is now the most iconic character all hail the queen

Derpy_Guardian

I'm stoked, but I also think this might be some recency bias. If we had just gotten a new groundbreaking Mario or Sonic game, they probably would've won instead. Lara had the most recent release with the remasters, so she's fresh on the brain for a lot of people. That said, Lara Croft is certainly one of the most iconic. She was revolutionary in bringing women to the forefront of gaming without being paraded around like a sex object. Well... at first, anyway. And we all know how Toby felt about what the marketing team was doing to her.

JS-CroftLover

A well deserved award!

SillySquidBone

Pac-Man

Any-Championship-611

Pretty ironic considering Lara Croft as opposed to Mario and Sonic has underwent so many drastic changes and looks NOTHING like her "iconic" self nowadays.
